As geeks, we enjoy all kinds of entertainment. But at Geeks Represent, we especially value stories told from the perspectives of people of all kinds of races and cultures. We feel it’s incredibly important to not only have these stories told with sincerity but to tell them well through accurate portrayals of people of color. This is why it’s especially disheartening when instead of taking the opportunity to portray these characters as they were meant to be portrayed, they’re instead miscast with white actors. You knew this was coming. We love it, you love it. There was no way we were not going to talk about the global phenomenon that is anime. For the last half century, anime has gone far beyond the borders of Japan to reach audiences all around the world. That includes black people, so much so that anime has become a valid part of black American culture. And as anime stories evolve and diversify, so have anime characters. However, some portrayals are obviously better than others. Today we’re going to talk about how anime has portrayed black people and the ever-changing relationship between black viewers and anime.

As actresses of color from across the DC universe, these women discussed their personal experiences, the impact of their characters and what it means to be a boss.

The world has gotten so much smaller thanks to high speed internet and social media. Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, said “Nothing travels faster than the speed of light, with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own laws.” Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Reddit have made it easier than ever to form communities, but they’ve also made it easier for society to collectively pass judgment and publicly shame someone for allegedly doing something wrong. And if the internet dictates it, that could mean the cancelling of someone’s image and even their career. And that is what we’ll be talking about today: cancel culture.

A long time ago (in 2019), four not so young men of color congregated for the first time. Fun was had, and they parted with the promise that they would soon see one another again. But it was not to be, for a pandemic had swept the nation and they were forced to stay apart for the foreseeable future. These four men did not give up, and with the aid of modern technology and a sense of duty to the world, these four formed a plot to commune every week and discuss the things that matter to them: racial injustice, anime, representation in media, comic book shows and movies, cultural appropriation, sci fi and fantasy, the fight for equality, and so much more.
