A casual reading of the parable of the widow and the judge might suggest that Jesus was saying if we go on asking God to do what we want, He will give in eventually and we will get our own way! A careful study of Luke 18:1-14 presents a very different picture.
Security comes with the confidence of knowing who you are and where you belong. In Ecclesiastes 4, we see Solomon mourning for the lost outside his palace gates as he watches them toil with the meaningless distractions of this world. Today, there are still millions of people walking around with the emptiness of not knowing God. And as this breaks the Lord's heart, it should move us to take action in sharing the Gospel.
If we are honest with ourselves, instant gratification is the driving force for many of our actions. But that pleasure soon fades. Jill brings us to Ecclesiastes 2 where Solomon puts this theory to the test in an effort to see what truly satisfies.

Daniel's great vision ended with him learning many astonishing things. He did not understand everything because the information concerned the near and distant future, but he was greatly encouraged. We, too, do not understand it all, but we can be encouraged.
Daniel's final visionary experience revealed to him something of the intensity of the spiritual conflict behind world events. But it also reminded him of the awesome power of the heavenly forces and the certainty of God's ultimate triumph. He wins "the great war."
Daniel was disciplined in prayer and dedicated to the study of "the Word of the Lord." He knew that in the Word, God speaks to His people, then in prayer we offer our response. The Word should stimulate prayer and prayer should reflect the Word.
Daniel was granted rare insights into the way God works out His purposes in the world. Occasionally, he was deeply distressed by what he learned but he carried on with the king's business nevertheless. Those to whom God reveals truth need to know what to do with it!
God came in Christ to offer us forgiveness through the cross. He rose again the third day and set about bringing the world back home. “Talk to me,” says the Father. “Prayer is the means; I have made a way.” But there is a problem—we don't know how.
A bewildered human race is like a man lost in a forest asking, “Father, are you there?” In 1945, at the end of World War 2, Helmut Thielicke, a brilliant theologian, preaching through the Lord's Prayer to what was left of his congregation in the ruins of his church in Stuttgart said, “Everything will be all right so long as we hear His good voice calling to us above the howling of the wolves, above the sound of branches snapping, above the ominous noises around us. God is always there.”

If we assume that we were created by an intentional God who had something in mind when He created us, then clearly we need to learn much about Him and His purposes. Peter said this would “keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:8).

One of the hardest things in life is facing rejection, especially when it comes from someone we love. We, like Leah, might keep striving, struggling, and manipulating to earn acceptance from our loved one. We may feel alone, but God sees and hears what we endure.

Everybody is growing old. Some are further along than others. But growing older does not necessarily mean growing wiser, more mature, or holier. It can mean becoming meaner, crabbier, and more selfish. We need to take care to grow old gracefully and gratefully!
Many of us struggle to live well when we experience difficulties in our relationships. We might even live in a state of denial—shrugging our shoulders and denying individual responsibility. How do we overcome the urge to ignore tough situations?

Life had taken some remarkable twists and turns for Joseph and his family, making considerable adjustments necessary. How they handled change is instructive, for we must handle change well if we are to live productively in a continually changing world.
The days in which Joseph lived were so full of challenge that there was a great need for someone to stand up, accept responsiblility, and give direction to troubled people. We live in similar days and God's people are called to live responsibly in them.
At the age of 30, after thirteen roller coaster years, Joseph was given great responsibility. Surprisingly, it was his spiritual qualities that led to his promotion in the secular world. Now he had to walk the tightrope of a spiritual man in a secular world.
By the time he was in his 20s, Joseph had suffered enough discouragement to last a lifetime. He was mistreated by his brothers, unjustly condemned by his employer, and forgotten by his friend.
But he didn't abandon his principles or his faith in God. How he coped is enlightening for all who are discouraged.
The Apostle Paul said, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances." Joseph apparently could have uttered similar sentiments because, despite being sold as a slave, we are told, "The Lord was with (him) and gave him success in whatever he did."
The story of Joseph starts with his betrayal at the tender age of seventeen. His handling of this traumatic situation speaks volumes of the qualities already rooted in his young life.

In the modern day church, our constant emphasis on our personal relationships with Christ has caused us to lose sight of the community of faith that we're a part of. Jesus commanded that His people gather as a church so that they would be reminded of their citizenship in this community—both the visible and the invisible. Fellowship is also the reason that Jesus first commanded His disciples to disciple others, so that more people could come to share the fellowship that Christians enjoy with the Father, Son, and Spirit.

Before the day of Pentecost, the disciples were in the middle of a faith crisis. They were broken after seeing Jesus crucified—they lost their purpose.
But part of God's divine plan was for the Holy Spirit to come and empower the disciples to go out into the world and launch the Great Commission.
What was this day like for the disciples and what does it mean for us?
We know it was spectacular and it forever changed the disciples. Peter, who couldn't even speak about Jesus to a servant girl one month earlier, was now emboldened to speak with authority to 3,000 listeners who came to believe in Christ.

Splinters, thorns, prickers. It doesn't matter what they are called, they hurt and get under your skin! Life in our world is filled with thorns: difficult relationships, illness, loss of loved ones, broken promises. The Bible tells us that even the Apostle Paul and God Himself in Jesus struggled under the bite of thorns. But God does not allow thorns in our lives without providing sufficient grace to live in the prickly mess. What Satan intends to push us down often results in pushing us to our knees in front of God's throne instead.

Why is a walk in a garden so relaxing? Because we were created to live in God's garden of perfection, forever. Unfortunately, as the story goes, Adam and Eve made a fatal error and were forced to make their home in the garden of sin instead, where nothing is perfect or peaceful.

Reading about the Israelites in the Old Testament can make us feel pretty superior. After all, these people, so cherished by God, often got it wrong. Cultural differences abound and have frequently led to pernicious points of conflict such as racism, ageism, generationalism, sexism. Modern culture places great emphasis on looking good and feeling good. Less concern is shown about doing good and being good. In fact “do good-ers” are often disliked and “being good” is sometimes dismissed as prudery. But Scripture says “Cling to what is good.” What is “the good” and how do we cling to it?
Opinions differ concerning the church. Some see it as an irrelevant relic to be ignored, others regard it as a respectable institution to be tolerated, while some see it as a powerful enemy to be opposed. But the person with the renewed mind sees it is the body of Christ. But what does that mean?
The renewed mind thinks clearly about “the self.” This is important because, as John Stott points out, “Our ‘self' is not a simple entity that is either wholly good or wholly evil, and therefore to be either totally valued or totally denied. Instead, our ‘self' is a complex entity of good and evil, glory and shame, which on that account requires that we develop more subtle attitudes to ourselves.”

Security comes with the confidence of knowing who you are and where you belong. In Ecclesiastes 4, we see Solomon mourning for the lost outside his palace gates as he watches them toil with the meaningless distractions of this world. Today, there are still millions of people walking around with the emptiness of not knowing God. And as this breaks the Lord's heart, it should move us to take action in sharing the Gospel.

Daniel's great vision ended with him learning many astonishing things. He did not understand everything because the information concerned the near and distant future, but he was greatly encouraged. We, too, do not understand it all, but we can be encouraged.
Daniel's final visionary experience revealed to him something of the intensity of the spiritual conflict behind world events. But it also reminded him of the awesome power of the heavenly forces and the certainty of God's ultimate triumph. He wins "the great war."

Daniel was granted rare insights into the way God works out His purposes in the world. Occasionally, he was deeply distressed by what he learned but he carried on with the king's business nevertheless. Those to whom God reveals truth need to know what to do with it!
