Here we are with another 'Summerween' episode. this time we are digging into musicians who supposedly made deals with the devil for their skill and fame. We start with the Mississippi Delta's favorite crossroads legend, Robert Johnson. We tell both the legendary version of his tale and then we dig down to what is likely the truth behind his life. Then we jump back to Europe in the 1700's where we meet a slightly strange man named Niccolo Paganini and hear about his deal with the devil. Then we dispense with the legend and tell the truth of his life, at least as much as we know, Finally, we tell the legend of Petey Wheatstraw, the Devil's Son-In-Law and then again, contrast that with the real life of Blues musician William Bunch, who used the name to perform and leaned into the legend hard. We examine the legacy of these tales and even discuss how their represented on the modern internet where, under their videos, you can read comments of people openly accusing people like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift of having sold their souls for fame and fortune in this don't look now but the devil's watchin' episode of the Family Plot Podcast!

Well, this week we head to what would eventually become the state of Connecticut in the 1600's where we discover that the people of Hartford and multiple other Connecticut villages had their own witch trials complete with Minister's weighing in, a code that included witchcraft as a capital crime and spectral evidence and these trials, in the days before America was a thing, in the days before Salem had quite the body count. The sad thing is that so little information survives in regards to the actual events. No recorded conversations, or recorded trials. We have scattered incomplete records whereas the people in Salem wrote down EVERYTHING. So we dive as deep as we are able in this exhaustive search of fragmentary evidence as we look into the Connecticut witch trials.

Man, what an episode! We are joined by our spooky Friend Brenda from Horrifying History to dig into the life of liar, cheater and serial killer (meaning he killed more than one person for a similar reason, he was not a pattern killer) known as HH Holmes. He was born Herman Webster Mudgett and as a child he was quiet, smart and studious. He tried to claim a legacy as a devil or a fiend who murdered unfortunate souls in turn of the 20th Century Chicago and all across the country. The truth is he started as a con man, using cadavers to cheat insurance companies out of money. He had training as both a doctor and a pharmacist and could have easily built a lucrative career out of those two things but instead, he hatched scheme after scheme, took out loans under fraudulent names and just did as much as he could to make himself wealthy while doing the least amount of work. He only began to kill people to cover up his lies and support his scams and we cover it all in this special episode discussing the life and crimes of HH Holmes!

One of four children, she was raised by parents who loved her and insisted on education, so much so that when school started, she was jumped to the second grade. She eventually graduated college at 19 with a triple major and a minor in history. We dig deep into this lady who became famous as the leader of the 6888 Central Postal Batallion that cleared three warehouses full of backlogged mail getting letters to troops who desperately needed a connection to home during World War II. So, as June 2026 draws to a close, we present the life and times of Barbara Gittings, a woman who refused to let the world define her as insane or a degenerate just because she was a lesbian. She set out to change things, curating museum collections so not everything about the LGBT+ was written by doctors, moralists or police. She made libraries a safe space for queer people trying to discover who they were. She lobbied the American Psychiatric Association and the DSM to remove the mental health stigma from a judgement of homosexuality and to get homosexuality removed from the DSM. She, and her longtime partner Kay Lahusen engaged in activist protests right up until her eventuaal death. We celebrate her life, accomplishemnts and death in this episode and Arthur covers Artfight and Empire Records in his corner.

There is a lot in this show. Arthur discusses some of Dad's health problems in his corner leading to discussions about movies he's been watching with Dad, including most recently Big Fish. (It's arguably Tim Burton's best movie) then we get into talking about the celebration that is Jineteenth which leads us to discussing how Abraham Lincoln wound up in the Wrestling Hall of Fame as the inventor of the choke slam and how a guy with a variety store sold souvenir fake confederate bills that helped crash the southern economy. After that we talk about Juneteenth, how it was the celebration of the moment that General George Granger and the Union troops arrived in Galveston on June 19th, 1865; the most remote part of America at that point and announced among other things General Order number 3 which told the people of color in Galveston that they were free. That they had been free since the Emancipation Proclamation. It became a celebrated holiday in Texas and from there grew out to the rest of the country where it was made a national holiday in 2021. . Have you heard of 'Tail-Gunner Joe' McCarthy and the Red Scare? What about Roy Cohn? These two not only kicked off the Red Scare where they pursued supposed communists in Government and later the military, but also went aafter gays under the theory that they were 'moral perverts susceptible to blackmail.'. Despite no evidence appearing that even one of these people were blackmailed outside the movie Clue (which is complete fiction), thousands of employees were fired between 1953 and the 90's when gay employees were forced out of government positions or fotced to live lives undercover simply because of who they loved. We cover the history of the lavender scare, people who were targeted because of it, a similar case in England where Alan Turing, the father of Artificial Intelligence was convicted of gross perversion for his relationship with another man and was chemically castrated which led to the unraveling of his brilliant mind. When his wife joined him in San Francisco, he had become a railroad baron. Eventually they had a child and Jane doted on the boy. This episode, we go deep into the life, heroism and spectacle that was Audie Murphy. Audie Murphy was a sharecropper's son from Hunt County Texas, small, skinny, barely fed and full of work. When his dad would disappear, he worked, when his mom died, he worked. When his family came apart, he tried military service. He was rejected by the marines, the paratroopers, only the Army would eventually accept the skinny kid from Texas because in the 1940's they needed manpower. We discuss Audie's training and how he went from being an unlikely soldier to the most decorated Combat Infantryman of World War II. He had over twenty medals and barely enough chest to pin them on. He would come home suffering from what we would today call PTSD and tried to build a life. He was invited to LA by actor James Cagney where he worked Westerns and military pictures before being chosen to play himself in the movie To Hell And Back.based on Audie's memoirs. He would marry twice, and become a songwriter with hits like Shutters and Boards. All this and more in this special, All American Episode of the Family Plot Podcast.

Well, in this episode we dig into our Kansas City Roots. We go to Kansas City in the 1920's where under 'Boss' Pendergast the city was a machine that kept clubs open all night and the liquor flowing. It was a town famous for being a little naive, jazz, good barbecue and something called the Kansas City Stomp. Kansas City had heard rumors of Prohibition and wanted no truck with it. It was into this world that a young man named Charlie Parker, a man who would be nicknamed 'Bird' began to play an alto sax and he would get humiliated and come back stronger. He became a good musician, and then he was in a car accident that broke his ribs and twisted his spine. He was given morphine for the pain and this would start a second addiction, the first was to music. He studied and practiced all he could in recovery and when he emerged he was a different player, he took the town by storm and he would go on to become one of the greats of Jazz and he'd become a big part of a muisc called bebop. We cover the Jewel Box Revue, the drag show that originated in the thirties and toured through the seventies creating a space for drag, female impersonators and gender bent comics in a show that advertised itself as 25 men and 1 girl. We also cover anti-crossdressing laws, the police's informal three article rule and how newspapers at the time published the names of those arrested for cross dressing, performing drag, or even just being openly gay. We talk about how drag shows came up from French cabarets like the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergere and morphed into something different and special in America. We also discuss Club 82, the New York nightspot run by the Gallo crime family that made a safe place in New York for drag long before Pride Marches and rainbow flags. We even discuss how movies like La Cage Au Folles, The Rocky Horror Picture Show,,The Birdcage, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo, Thanks forEverything, Julie Newmar owe a lot of their DNA to these early expressions of queer joy and drag glamour. Here we go! Another little bit of history that really matters. In 1942, following Pearl Harbor, Franklin Roosevelt signed executive order 9066 which allowed the military designated Military zones and control who lived in them in the United States. The order did not mention Japanese American citizens or concentration camps by name, but effectively that'w who was targeted and what was created in this executive order. Japanese Citizens were rounded up, sent to camps and forced to live in old horse stalls or worse before being transferred to some of the worst hellholes in the country. We have quite the episode for you here. This time we head back to 1942 to meet a small Jewish family, the Frank family. They are a mom a dad and two daughters living in Germany watching the country become a nightmare for Jews like themselves. Otto, the father, led them over to the Netherlands where he had business contacts. However, soon the Nazis occupied and controlled the Netherlands and the Franks were facing the same persecution they had before. So with great reluctance, they and another Jewish family went into hiding in a secret annex hidden behind a bookcase in Otto's business. Within a few months they were joined by a single dentist. For over a year they hid in the Secret Annex, staying quiet while employees did their thing, only running heat when the employees were gone and terrified at the sounds of frequent break-ins. However, it all came to an end when someone (history has no solid answers for who) reported them, the business was searched, the Annex found,and those hiding were taken away to labor resettlement camps, and from there to concentration camps where all but one were eventually killed. Otto Frank survivved and when he came into possession of his daughter's diary he published it. This is the best record we have for the atmosphere in Germany and Netherlands in 1942 and '43. In this episode we set the Elevator of History back to 1835 where we witness the ;'penny paperss' papers sold for one cent instead of six that featured stories people WANTED to read, rather than news by and for a political party. These papers brought us separate sections on news, finance, sports and featured on the scene reporting and lurid true crime details. But it was the New York Sun that launched into a six day report of what a famous mathematician, chemist and learned individual was looking at the moon through a legendary telescope and reporting the discovery of the most amazing things including: albino moon-bison, miniature zebras, one horned goats, unicorns and the fascinating bat people of the moon who dwelt in massive temples carved from giant rubies. The public was fascinated by this series of articles until the report, six days later that the telescope had caught a stray sunbeam, magnified it's intensity and set the observatory alight causing it to burn to the ground. In the days and weeks that followed it slowly came out that none of this was true, however, the Sun never printed a retraction and their readership had grown significantly despite the scandal, most new readers stayed. We discuss all this, the Blue Fugates, touch on Orson Welles War of the Worlds and discuss Terry Gilliam's the Adventures of Baron Munchausen in this it can't get weirder than this episode of the Family Plot Podcast!

What a show! WWe dive deep into the life of Shirley Temple Black, from her young life as a precocious little girl with a smile, to her mother's enrolling her in the Meglin Kiddies Dance School at the age of three, to her subsequent discovery a few months later, hiding behind the piano when Educational Pictures director Charles Lamont came to the school looking for talent. She at first joined the Baby Burlesks, a somewhat uncomfortable series in which toddlers, clad in costumes above the waist and diapers below recreated onscreen moments from more famous pictures...this led to many unclomfortable moments among viewers. But her performance in Stand Up and Cheer! impressed the directors at Fox who signed her to a simple contract and proceeded to make movies like The Littlest Rebel, Curly Top, Dimples, amd The Littlest Princess where she played an adorable moppet with an unforgettable smile who became the single most bankable star of the 1930's. Not one performer in that era made as much as this singing and tap-dancing little starlet. When she aged out of that kind of role both Fox and MGM tried to repackage heer and she made a handful of films that ranged from watchable to deeply forgettable. MGM released her from her contract and she married her first husband, who was unable to handle the pressure of BEING her husband leading to his drinking and their divorce. Eventually she would marry Charles Alden Black who would be her husband till his death in 2004. She would also become a politician and candidate for congress, a stateswoman and a diplomat during the 70's and 80;s. She would move from this role to a quite life at home, only turning up occasionally in interviews or to collect an honor, though when she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and eventually got a mastectomy she was very public with her diagnosis, treatment and an advocacy for testing early and frequently, Otherwise she lived a quiet life until she would eventually pass away in the early 2010's. She would be mourned on morning news programs across the country and we dive deep into her amazing life in this Women's History Month special episode.

In this episode , we look into the life of Emma aka Grandma Gatewood. Born in rural Ohio at the tail end of the 19th Century, she was the 7th of 15 children raised in a one room cabin, sleeping four to a bed, her only moments of peace were walks from her family home. At 19, she met PC
Gatewood, an Elementary school teacher who also treated her with unkindness and violence. Her only escape was to get away, talking walks to escape the violence. She had 11 children with Gatewood until she was divorced from him. Then she raised them as best she could working any job she could get to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. By the time she was in her sixties, she had a goal...to walk the length of the Appalachian Trail. In this episode, we set the Elevator of History to the Kentucky portion of the Appalachians where we check out the Packhorse Librarians. Women, funded by the WPA, who brought books into the hoots and hollers of Kentucky, providing reading and kinship in rural communities who otherwise would have no access to books. They traveled on mules and horses carrying books in saddlebags and pillowcases to needy communities and while they only lasted a short time, they helped change rural Kentucky and make it part of the modern world and helped raise the rate of illiteracy from 31 percent to just 5 percent in the 1940s. We cover the history, notable packhorse librarians and do our best to honor the history of these 'book women'.

Jump on the Elevator of History with us and ride it back to America's involvement in World War I. When the US brought over a segregated unit of Black Men that were mostly a labor batallion, then they were loaned to the French Infantry who gave them French helmets, equipment, weapons and rations and put them on the front lines. For 191 days, the longest of any unit in the war they stayed on the front lines, never giving up ground, always pushing forward and cementing their legacy and their strengths forcing the US Army to reconsider it's segregation and the idea that Black soldiers weren't capable or competent fighters. And while it would take another thirty years to desegregate the US Military, it might not have happened at all without the persistence, dedication and heroism of the Harlem Hellfighters!

TW - This episode we drop a few 'f' bombs, and a few other words we would not normally use. But we are dealing with an act of domestic terrorism that has been concealed by polite history. We discuss the rRise of Black Wall Street in the Greenwood District of Oklahoma. How discovering oil in the early twenties brought people of all colors to to the young state of Oklahoma unintentionally creating a community of Black entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors and other professionals,,This created a segregation and suspicion drove them into the community of Greenwood where they built black schools, black theaters, black hotels and black shops. Their community was so good and prosperous that even whites would shop there when they could get a product better or cheaper. However, one night, a young man named Dick Rowland who worked in Tulsa had to use the restroom. Being black, he couldn't go to the bathroom where he worked he had to go to one of the 'Black Only' bathrooms and the closest one was on the top floor of the nearby Drexler Building. The elevator was operated by one Sarah Page and as Dick rode the elevator, it shook briefly, causing Dick to wobble, he grabbed Sarah's arm to right himself, and Sarah, not expecting the contact, yelled as she was very startled. That's it...well Dick left the elebator a clerk saaw him and reported the incident to the police. Police arrested Roland and Black World War I veterans showed up armed, to prevent the vigilante lynch mob from attacking the jail and lynching Dick. It was this event that set off the Tulsa Race Massacre...an overnight series of assaults, unreasonable arrests, theft, arson and murder that devastated the district of Greenwood. It seems that, since 2002 when people in Montpelier on Valentine's day morning, they find their town covered in hearts, celebrating love, community and kindness. More than one person has served the role of the Phantom, like the Dread Pirate Roberts, it's a title that gets passed on from time to time. We cover the history of the tiny capital of Montpelier, the history of the Valentine Phantom and how even during a blizzard and the height of the pandemic, the Montpelier Valentine Phantom (or Bandit) was able to cover the town in hearts. One of three episodes for Black History Month this Month, we cover the amazing life of Frederick Douglass, born a slave, he managed to sneak an education which propelled him to Freedom and so much more. He learned letters and managed to improve his education by challenging white school children and allowing them to correct him, watching men in lumberyards and shipyards mark words on boxes and objects until he could copy their strokes perfectly. We discuss hiss first attempt to escape which got him arrested and his second which earned him Freedom. We discuss his life as a writer, an abolitionist, a public speaker and as a consciense for the country following the Civil War (which was a war about slavery not state's rights...don't be fooled by a racist narrative). We mention how he had the best hair of that era and his lifelong career as a speaker and statesman even touching on earlier mentions on our podcast (episode 232 and 242) and so much more in this, our first Black History Month epiosde of 2026 on the Family Plot Podcast. 2026 has been an interesting year for us and so far, all the episodes, we've done have had a real world echo to something happening in our world right now. This was unplanned and this week continues that trend as we discuss the Pruitt-Igoe Housing Project. An attempt in Saint Louis to create a new type of housing for the urban poor was met with removal of any communal or public space, to maximize efficiency, segregation, patrols to keep 'able bodied men' from getting free rent by living with their families, and no funding for maintenance which instead of lifting up the urban poor, just pointed them at a life of crime in this episode where we discuss the history of this Saint Louis housing project, what the idea or originally was versus what it becoame and then how instead of spending billions for corporate welfare, we could instead spend those same billions actually helping people and stimulating the economy. Then we dig into the Yuba County 5, a California cold case that ranks right up there with the Dyatlov Pass Incident for being unsolvable Maybe higher because a slab avalance seems the likely solution to that mystery...but there is no easy answer to the Yuba County 5. Why would five men drive miles out of their way into the Plumas County forest? Why would they get out of a car that had half a tank of gas, was mechanically sound, and not stuck. Why would they hike 19 miles to a forest service trailer where at least three men died along the way? Why was a fifth man discovered dead in a forest service trailer with several weeks growth of beard? Why did he die from exposure and malnutrition when the trailer had both food and heat? Why did he have another man's shoes with him what happened to the one man who was never found and who's gold watch was also found in the trailer? We ask all these questions but there aren't really any answers in this mysterious, historical, true crime deep dive into a cold case from all the way back in 1978.

Our latest episode goes hog wild as we talk about the heroic Ida B. Wells. From taking care of her brothers and sisters at the age of 16 after her parents and brother died of yellow fever to teaching in black schools to writing for local papers and taking on lynchings in the South. And this wasn't even forty years after the Brooks Sumner Affair where South Virginia's Senator Preston Brooks attacked Massachussets Senator Charles Sumner hitting him over the head many times after he gave a powerful Anti-Slavery speech. And this was a black woman born into slavery who told the truth about lynchings in a way the South was not ready to hear. A lynch mob would tear her newspaper asunder, force the papers owner to sign a retraction at gunpoint while she happened to be in New York...and in New York she stayed continuing to write the truth about lynchings in the South, even going to England where she spoke publicly about the issue, embarassing the US abroad. Even when she campaigned for women's suffrage, she refused to march in the back, jumping in the middle of the parade as it happened walking with white female suffragists. Largely forgotten by history, she was quoted by US. President Joe Biden when he signed the US first anti-lynching law in 2022. The child of a master butcher and one of thre girls born and raised in the South of England, she spent her pocket money on tools and penknives, deconstructed devices to see how they fit together and worked and played with Meccano sets, early construction toys allowing children to build working models of cars and cranes. She would even win a competition for building from these kits. By the age of 14, she bought her first motorcycle originally to beat her sisters in bike races. But she tuned, tinkered and replaced every single part remaking the machine and soon was speeding around on it everywhere. She began to study practical electronics and work in the field as young as 15, even going on to become an Engineer (in the 1930's when women just didn't do such things). We cover the life of this amazing woman and how she saved both the Spitfire and the Hurricane, earned an OBE and hit the ton at Brooklands as a motorcycle racer in this uplifting, girl powerm yes it's in Surrey but there's no fringe on top episode of the Family Plot Podcast!

We have so much to tell you about! In this episode, we dig into the life of Storme DeLarverie, a man who was born to a black mother and white father. Mom was a servant and Dad was wealthy. Because he was a child of black and white parents he was never issued a birth certificate and chose to celebrate his birthday on December 24th. His dad paid for his education but he was raised mostly by his grandfather. He joined the Ringling Brothers Circus as a show rider and began to get on stage at Jazz Clubs at only 15. He would travel Europe with a jazz ensemble before returning to the United States where he joined the Jewel Box Revue. The Jewel Box was at the time the only interracial drag show and it toured all over the country even to military bases. And Storme became the show's lone drag king and emcee. He was on hand at the Stonewall when the infamous uprising began in New York City aand may have been the one to kick off violence. He later went on to become the Guardian of Greenwich Village in this, wow this was a true American episode of the Family Plot Podcast.

Her body was discovered wearing no more than a black cloak and a blackened silver cross lying atop a mound with a dagger shape carved into it. The mound was what locals called a fairy hill and to this day, no one knows how her death came about. We study her life, her fascination with psychic research and how she eventually became a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In this episode, we jump to our second campaign, a Call of Cthulhu based campaign called Lore for the Pages. In this episode, our heroes inherit both a bookstore and a home from KH Hillman, a bookseller who for years has been selling Cthulhu Mythos and occult books and objets d'arts by mail to unscrupulous buyers. Now, our heroes have to reclaim these lost objects before they are used to cause more problems. The first adventure is set in the fictional town of Sargasso Springs Alabama, a coastal town that is suffering from a strange infestation of bugs and some unusually cold weather. Our heroes get notified of their inheritance and begin the investigation of their new home while realizing neither the weather or the bugs are natural. Billy the Kid! Born Henry McCarty in New York City, he eventually went west with his Mother and brother with stops in Indiana and Wichita before landing in Silver City New Mexico. His mom died when he was just 14 and his stepdad abandoned him to head to California to start mining. Henry's first criminal act was to steal food for which he served ten days in jail. Later he went on to become a horse thief and a Regulator and fought in a conflict called the Lincoln County War. He killed a corrupt Sheriff and his deputy and became fodder for tales of the Wild West and Newspapers, building a legend as a killer that it's possible he didn't earn. We talk about his life, his death and the mysteries and surprises he left behind, including a possible survival under the name 'Brushy' Bill Cody! In Arthur's Corner he talks Dandy's World, getting over illness and his return to school as well as his recent popularity as a young transman on Threads. The rest of the Laura suggested show we discuss Clara Barton, her life as a young, possibly neurodivergent woman, how she grew up with only one close friend and the love of her family leading to her first career as a school teacher and someone who created the public school system in Bordentown New Jersey. The people of Bordentown were so impressed, they made a brand new school building and gave the job of principal to a man from out of state whom they paid double her salary. She left and joined the US Patent Office in Washington DC which led to her becoming a battlefield nurse during the Civil War and founding the American Red Cross. After leaving the Red Cross, the founded the National First Aid Association of America and continued public speaking almost right up to her death at 90 years old. She was eventually caught and charged with horse thievery and even that didn't stop her. She served her time in Detroit before returning to a life of crime. Her brave enrollment in 1956 was court-ordered and historic… and it ignited the largest anti-integration riot in American history. Haschich Fudge (which anyone could whip up on a rainy day)This is the food of Paradise—of Baudelaire’s Artificial Paradises: it might provide an entertaining refreshment for a Ladies’ Bridge Club or a chapter meeting of the DAR. In Morocco it is thought to be good for warding off the common cold in damp winter weather and is, indeed, more effective if taken with large quantities of hot mint tea. Euphoria and brilliant storms of laughter; ecstatic reveries and extension of one’s personality on several simultaneous planes are to be complacently expected. Almost anything Saint Theresa did, you can do better if you can bear to be ravished by “un évanouissement reveillé.”Take 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, 1 whole nutmeg, 4 average sticks of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon coriander. These should all be pulverised in a mortar. About a handful each of stoned dates, dried figs, shelled almonds and peanuts: chop these and mix them together. A bunch of cannabis sativa can be pulverised. This along with the spices should be dusted over the mixed fruit and nuts, kneaded together. About a cup of sugar dissolved in a big pat of butter. Rolled into a cake and cut into pieces or made into balls about the size of a walnut, it should be eaten with care. Two pieces are quite sufficient.

So in the 17th Century, in Rome, Giulia Tofana led a group of women who made devotional oils, cosmetic liquids and of course, poison. This poison was a famed untraceable and undetectable poison for it's time and it was dubbed Aqua Tofana. 4 doses they said, could put any man in his grave. It was a way for women, who could not get a divorce to get out of some very bad situations and over 20 years, these women claimed to have killed over 600 men, We discuss the poison, the time, the place and famous folks who felt they were victims of this strange brew. So this episode is the first of our 2024 Spooky Season and we begin with a few haunting tales of phantom trains. We begin in Washington DC for a story about Lincoln's Funeral train and how it would reappear at night years afterwards chugging it's way down the tracks attended by skeletons and sepulcheral figures. Then we go to Maco Station in North Carolina to meet a signalman killed during a crash whose signal light would appear again and again forcing the company to put a signalman with two lanterns at Maco Station to stop trains from stopping for the phantom signalman. Then we go back to North Carolina and examine the Bostian Bridge train wreck, and it's phantom that still appears crossing the old bridge. Finally we go to Frenchtown Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and see a ghost train that is still seen to this day. However, the carnival-like atmosphere of his trial and even the judge publicly saying he was guilty eventually earn him a new trial and his freedom. After ten years in prison, wrongfully convicted of his wife's murder, he tried to make a new life for himself even wrestling and inventing the 'Mandibular Nerve Pinch' a move Mankind repackaged into 1996 into the Mandible Claw. Still, he eventually passed away from the effects of alcoholism in this special, man I wonder where they got the idea for the Fugitive movie and TV show episode of the Family Plot Podcast!

Today, Laura, Krysta and Dean visit the small farming town of Skidmore, Missouri. Picture this, you live in a small farming community and one of your neighbors is a thief and a known bully. This week Laura, Krysta and Dean discuss the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, but first Krysta gives us some weird facts about potatoes and other similar tubers. Once we get done digging into that topic (what I did there, did you see it?) we go into the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The building of this facility was initiated in 1851. However, with the Civil War, the Virginia legislature attempted to take the money for it's continued construction and put it into their defense as they seceded from the Union. However, those funds had already been withdrawn by Union Troops and taken to Wheeling, which led to the statehood of West Virginia. After this military start, the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum went on to become a place that under many names attempted to treat the mentally ill, though often the cures were worse than the disease. Once we cover the history of the place we discuss ghosts and paranormal entities that live on site. And we also discuss television showws that have reported on ghostly events there as well as a video game that has an entire area based on the hospital. In the early morning hours of August 8th 1963, 16 men stopped and robbed the Royal Mail Train from Glasgow to London. The men drove away with roughly 2.3 million Emglish Pounds (worth close to 30 million today). We get into all of that, but first Krysta has some facts in honor of International Woman's Day! Krysta gives us somewhere between six and seven facts and then off we go. First we look at the robbers themselves, then we look at their plan and in some ways, just how lucky they were. During those three months starting in December of 1957, whaling, floods, and storms added to a boom in resorts led to 9 shark attacks leading to several deaths. Because sharks were not well understood, their attempts to curb the problem only led to more problems. Young Booth had his fortune told by a Romani fortune teller who read his palm and told him he would have a grand life, but that he would die young and meet a bad end. Holding himself out as a business executive and philanthropist, Robinson first preyed on women who were down on their luck and later used the internet to find victims. The brainchild of William Banks Hanner, the Hotel Cecil started off as a place for business travellers and the social elite, but with the arrival of the Great Depression, so arrived hard times for the hotel and it's bloody history began. Innate Spellcasting. The siren’s innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 14). The siren can innately cast the following spells, requiring no components.

Luring Song. The siren sings a magical melody. Every humanoid and giant within 300 feet of the siren that can hear the song must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed until the song ends. The siren must take bonus action on its subsequent turns to continue singing. It can stop singing at any time. The song ends if the siren is incapacitated. While charmed by the siren, a target is incapacitated and ignores the songs of other sirens. If the charmed target is more than 5 feet away from the siren, the target must move on its turn towards the siren by the most direct route, trying to get within 5 feet. It doesn’t avoid opportunity attacks, but before moving into damaging terrain, such as lava or a pit, and whenever it takes damage from a source other than the siren, the target can repeat the saving throw. A charmed target can also repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If the saving throw is successful, the effect ends on it. A target that successfully saves is immune to this siren’s song for the next 24 hours.

Sailors will sometimes hear a beautiful song as they near rocky coastlines. This enchanting song is being sung by the siren. Its true form is part bird, part female humanoid creature. Hundreds of years ago, a jealous witch altered their beautiful form and banished these fey from the land.
Vengeful Vixens. Sirens are out for revenge and seek to lure those near the coast. Sailors have even been known to wreck their ships as they are drawn closer to rocky shores.
Forgotten Fey. Still angry about the curse that altered their form, sirens use their shapechange ability to return to land at times. Once on land, the siren attempts to use all its charms to lure more victims.)
