Welcome to an interview with me and Vicki to discuss the process of de-escalating potentially violent situations and how we need to start by learning to de-escalate ourselves. Shelly explains how anger is a secondary emotion – the bodyguard to sadness and the protector to fear. They explore practical steps that can make a difference to calm both ourselves and others. Not only can we interrupt an escalation, but Shelly embodies a perspective that sees hope in these very situations toward possible deeper connection and healing.

This podcast episode we will talk about teen therapy and its importance for teens. It gives them a safe, private place to talk about their feelings, thoughts, and worries without being judged.

Let's be honest, the teenage years are a time of big emotional and mental changes, and therapy can help teens deal with these changes in a healthier way. Therapy can help teens learn useful ways to deal with stress, solve problems, and talk to each other along with providing them with a safe place to figure out who they are, build up their strength, and deal with any mental health problems they may be having.

Investing in their mental health at this important time can have a big, positive effect on their general growth and success in the future.

While counselling is often seen as a resource for individuals seeking support, it is still a topic that is surrounded by stigma and misconception, especially for men. In this episode, we will discuss the top issues for men in counselling, the stigma surrounding men seeking help.

Now, let's discuss the stigma surrounding men seeking help.  Despite the growing awareness of mental health issues, seeking help can still carry a stigma, particularly for men. Men are often expected to be strong and resilient, and admitting to struggles with mental health can be seen as a weakness, some men may worry about being judged or stigmatized by their peers or community if they seek help.

Teenagers frequently struggle with depression and self-harm.

Many youth in Canada suffer from depression, a mood condition. It can result in unhappiness, pessimism, and a lack of interest in activities once of interest to your teen.

Physical symptoms may include exhaustion, lack of appetite or overeating, and challenges with sleeping can also be brought on by depression. These signs can significantly affect a teen's capacity to carry out daily tasks, such as attending school and participating in social activities, seeing friends, and isolating themselves.

On the other side, self-harming is a habit that's frequently utilized as a way to deal with big and tricky emotionals that your teen may not have the tools and strategies to deal with. Cutting, burning, scraping, pinching,or hitting oneself are just a few ways teens may selfharm. It may lead to more serious issues and most often indicates underlying problems for your teen -  it may be time to find professional supports.

Guilt, as subtle as it may be, is a pervasive emotion that many of us experience daily.  We feel pressure to be doing something, always, especially things that show we’re progressing. When we’re not, we feel guilty.  We’re constantly comparing ourselves to others’ success stories. We believe that our successes and our failures are completely due to our own actions, or lack thereof. Guilt doesn’t necessarily stop you from doing things, but it can waste valuable energy.  It can slowly chip away at our self-esteem, making it more difficult to pursue goals or to move on after setbacks. Sitting down with Dave Hollis was like sitting down with an old friend.   After educating about emotions for so many years, I was surprised to learn from Dave about how much he understood about his own emotions.  Affectionately calling his  Anxiety - Clarke - because he agrees with me that you have to name your emotions and identify what they are telling you, embrace those message and adjust accordingly. Dave shares with us about his change in careers and his transition into a mainstream fatherhood and how he struggled with his identity once becoming an entrepreneur and not having he status of the Disney Corporation beside his name. While with Disney, Dave discovered that storytelling was his superpower.  That he could walk into a room, read it and know exactly what it was that they needed to hear.  He was a shape-shifter. And while you would figure that these qualities would be a gift, he found later that they actually didn't serve him.  That he wasn't connecting to the people who were struggling the way he was struggling and storytelling didn't afford him the opportunity to help people because of the way I was telling stories -- they didn't reflect what anyone was really needing. So he had to make a decision.  A difficult decision because of so much muscle memory around storytelling -- and that he was going to have to own his own stuff. There are so many lessons in Dave Hollis' story, this is an incredible episode.

Sometimes it takes experiences such as a house fire or evacuation, the pandemic, losing a family member, losing a job... to realize that we need to be vulnerable enough to ASK.  FOR.  HELP.

In order to grow as a person, we need to gather our tribe, find a confidant or a mentor, a support person, As Brene’ Brown tells us; too many of us equate being vulnerable with weakness however; as she so famously quotes, “vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage”.

Have you ever pulled into your driveway after work and wondered "how did I get here?"   You can't remember if you stopped at the red lights or even what music we were listening to.

Our minds can disengage from the present moment during routine tasks.  Our brains are hardwired to remember repetition so that we don't have to concentrate on every little thing.

It's a defense mechanism.  And a blessing.

But what happens when we spend too much time on autopilot?  Tune into this podcast and find out how to ensure we aren't missing the "Main Event".

Emotional resilience is not some thing we were all provided by our parents as children. When a negative thought enters our mind taking a moment to acknowledge it, and realize how it’s been impacting us can be one of the most powerful things we can do in order to hold onto positivity when all else seems lost. Building resilience is key to the power of positive thinking

Its been difficult keeping our family nourished with healthy foods and staying active and maintaining our fitness. What a joke 😬

I recently linked up with this gal Amanda King and she reached into my heart. This gorgeous soul has walked the walk. I recently interviewed Amanda where she shared her story about being overweight as a child and the challenges that came with it. It broke my heart. And I realized that only she had the power to change her own story... she turned her pain into a passion for helping others turn their life around.

If you have a child or teen struggling with body challenges and image take a listen 🎧!
