Walking away from a career that's intertwined with your heartstrings feels like an act of betrayal—yet here I am, stepping back from my pediatric palliative care pharmacy role. I've poured everything into our little warriors at Evelina and Kings, but the whispers of family life have become roars I can't ignore. In our latest episode, I bare my soul about the guilt-laced decision to resign, the tug-of-war between professional fulfillment and the magnetic pull of family needs. It's a conversation that delves into the complexities of adjusting to life as a family of four and the stark realities sleepless nights bring to our daily rhythms.

Striking a work-life balance isn't just about carving out time; it's about recalibrating your entire career to the tune of your personal life. That's precisely the journey I'm embarking on—refining my multifaceted role in pharmacy to hold onto the joy of teaching and connecting with students, while letting go of the administrative burdens that eat into precious family moments. We talk about the difficulty of unplugging from a career that often doesn't have an off switch and share the strategies I'm adopting to ensure that the moments with my little ones aren't just fleeting memories.

Finally, we turn our gaze toward the horizon, where the exciting world of self-employment in pharmacy beckons.

Join us as I step into a future where professional growth and family life are no longer at odds, but harmoniously aligned.

Whilst forging a successful career, Nick turned into a version of himself that he thought he needed to be. He projected a persona that was bigger and better, suggesting life was even more awesome and more successful than it really was. And whilst to the outside world, he was successful materialistically, he wore a mask for years becoming a version of himself that he grew to dislike.

Sound familiar?

In this episode Nick shares his story from how he lost literally everything and rebuilt his life by taking responsibility for who he was and who he wanted to become.

In 10 years he has gone from burnt out to being on fire!

Nick is an Internationally Accredited Life Coach and Mentor and now uses life experiences, learnings and skills to help men with a midlife reset so they can avoid their own midlife crisis.

It's that time of year again. The time that many parents look forward to, after a long summer with the children. But how do your children feel? I know how I felt after 6 weeks at home and then having to go back to school. For many this can bring up some big feelings and emotions which they probably do not know how to handle.

That's where Natalie Costa comes in. With over ten years experience in teaching and education, Natalie is all too familiar with the struggles, pressures and demands that both teachers and children face. She has observed how easily children become disengaged when they are faced with a difficult task; how quickly they feel they CAN’T do something, simply because it’s more challenging to achieve; how anxious and overwhelmed they feel with the ever increasing demands from the curriculum and from society as a whole, feeling the pressure to conform to what everyone else is doing, the pressure to ‘fit in’.

Natalie is the founder of Power Thoughts, which is a teaching, coaching and mindfulness based service which is aimed at empowering children to tap into the ‘power’ of their minds. Through our sessions they are taught how to become confident, resilient and robust, developing a ‘can-do’ attitude that allows them to flourish both in and out of the classroom setting.

In this episode I sit down in person with Natalie to talk about:

  • Natalie’s background and upbringing
  • How self doubt and imposter syndrome has impacted her
  • Positive framing and growth mindset
  • How she carved out a career through her curiosities
  • Benefits of coaching for kids
  • How to help children manage big feelings

Have you ever been told by a doctor that it would help if you lost weight, did some exercise or eat a healthier diet? Usually that advice is not followed up with any practical advice on how to do those things.

Well thankfully that is about to change.

Nutritank was founded by two medical students Dr Ally Jaffee and Dr Iain Broadley who believed that nutrition and lifestyle medicine education in medical training was not adequate. They believed that they had a responsibility to their generation and future generations of doctors to make a change and that young people are in the ideal position to make that difference.

By working with medical schools, nutrition and dietetic organisations around the UK, Nutritank has evolved into an innovative information hub of food, nutrition and lifestyle medicine.

In this episode we discuss Dr Broadley's background and how he got into medicine. He shares openly about how he didn't have a great self care routine during his first time at university (he has two degrees!). This led to a breakdown due to stress prior to his finals in the 3rd year. He bounced back through dedicating time to self-care This experience got him through medical school. It highlighted to him the importance of self-care and lifestyle, and as a medical student he asked himself the obvious question: "Why are we not teaching this to our doctors?"

He shares his experience of how Nutritank has been influential in changing the curriculum at medical school across the UK to include nutrition and lifestyle education.

I cannot stress how significant this is! Thanks to Nutritank our future generations will be provided with the tools and education of how to look after our physical and mental health which you cannot put a price on.

Dr Devika Patel is an NHS junior doctor completing her specialty training in Psychiatry. Outside of work, her passions lie in reducing mental health stigma and developing her knowledge of personal development. She has crafted these passions into a podcast, where guest shares their life stories of mental illness to human flourishing, and has also recently launched an intentional living membership programme.

In this episode we go through her journey from what it was like growing up as a British gujarati, why she chose medicine as a career, how she met her husband, what the future holds and a lot lot more.

She provides us with an excellent account what a psychiatrist does and how this differs from a psychologist and we discuss how we can stop the stigma attached around mental health.

Devika was a delight to talk to and I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds for her.

Making her second appearance on the podcast is my best friend Lakshmi Patel. Lakshmi and I sat down for a long overdue chat about her life post breast cancer. This is a deep conversation. We discuss everything from childhood trauma's that have shaped us both, Lakshmi talks about her spiritual journey through cancer and how it has lead her to find her true purpose. Lakshmi and I have known each other since we were 8 years old (that's 35 years - you do the math and work out our age!). There isn't another person alive that knows me as well as she does and I can say confidently that it's the same the other way around. Her story is incredible! If you haven't checked out our first conversation then the links are below! You're in for a real treat. A fly on the wall view of a long form conversation between two souls that have a deep connection. I am extremely grateful to have Lakshmi in my life.

To mark the 50th episode of the podcast I decided to step into the hot seat! It was during a casual conversation with my good friend Dr. Nilesh Satguru that the idea for this episode came about. After talking about my past he asked why I've never shared the story on the podcast! I could not think of a good reason why not so here we are!

Luckily he agreed to take the role of interview for which I am very grateful. In this episode we go deep. Into my story, my journey, big life decisions and my path in happiness.

I had an absolute blast recording the episode, nothing was scripted, we had no real agenda so what you hear is a fly on the wall documentary of a conversation between two friends.

Thank you to all my previous guests for helping me get this far. I'm only scratching the surface and the evolution of the podcast has been amazing to experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far and I intend to continue that way!

I hope you enjoy the episode!

Dr Indika is a devoted mother of 3, wife, functional medicine doctor, and dancer! She is on a mission to help 100 million people embed dancing into their own lives as a life enhancing self care practice!

In April 2021, Indika re-ignited her life-long passion for dancing, by training to facilitate Transcendance™, which is a fun, free-form dance experience accessible to all no matter what the age, fitness or mobility level.

She believes that every single person has the ability to dance their own way to feel good, and is here to guide, encourage and help people to infuse fun into their own health and wellbeing.

Recently, Indika has been sharing her own quick dance practice, or as she puts it her ‘movement meditation’! This has totally transformed her own life and wellbeing such that she feels more connected and joyful, and for the first time in her life, is showing up as her best self!

Indika is based in the UK, and runs her own private virtual clinic helping clients who seek to work with a health professional with a strong focus on the mind-body-spiritual approach, who has extensive experience in both conventional General Practice and Functional Medicine.

In this episode she discusses her journey to an alcohol free life and the benefits that has brought. We talk about her new book, Eurphoric, which is designed for casual drinkers to show them how much happiness, well-being and self love an be found in an alcohol-free lifestyle.

We ran into some technical issues during the recording of this episode. The intro is missing hence it goes straight into our conversation. Apologies!

Phil is a person. Like any of us, he is susceptible to challenges with his health, including his mental health. However when you put the title Doctor in front of that person it changes the dynamic and perception, which of course it should not.

In this episode Phil talks about his struggles with mental ill health and how he put himself on to the road to recovery.

Thank you Phil for being so open and honest in this conversation.

Dr. Orlena Kerek worked as a doctor in the UK and witnessed so many sick people in hospital dying of “lifestyle disease” that could have been prevented with a healthy lifestyle.

Later she began her training in paediatrics. She saw so many children coming into her clinic with tummy ache because they were constipated and not eating a healthy diet.

This opened her eyes to the fact that children develop eating and lifestyle habits at an early age. Once she became a mother she realised how difficult it can be to help our kids develop healthy eating habits.

She moved away from clinical practice to help families establish healthy habits.

In this episode we discuss habit change and Dr. Orlena reveals some easy tips that will help you with long term behaviour change.

Never has the time been right to start increasing your physical activity levels. The warmer days and longer evenings make it the perfect time to take long walks or go out for a run or a cycle. We all know that physical activity is good for us. But do we know why? How much do we need to do in order for it to be effective? Personal trainers and gyms are not everyone's cup of tea, but what else can we do if that's the case? This week's guest is the perfect person to answer those plus many other questions!

Dr. Joeseph Godden is a Foundation Year 2 Doctor who holds a BSc in Sports & Exercise Medicine, is a qualified Level 3 Personal Trainer and the founder of The Fit Life Doctor.

He has a strong interest in physical activity, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine and its importance in the primary prevention of illness.". Very rarely do you come across a doctor who is also a qualified personal trainer so I was delighted when Joe agreed to come onto the podcast.

It's great to see a new generation of medical professionals broadening their understanding of health, it will only strengthen the medical care we all receive.

Dr. Joe was a pleasure to interview. Hope you enjoy the conversation.

We are designed to move. We are designed to move freely, roam, walk, run, climb. The human body can move in so many different ways (just think of all the different events in the Olympics!). Many of us however have lost that connection with movement. Our modern sedentary lives have made us a slave to technology and convenience.

One person who has not lost this connection is coach, personal trainer and friend, Phillip Elder. I met Phillip when I first entered into the fitness industry during my time in Dubai. The self confessed "careful trainer", Phil has always paid a great attention to detail when it comes to technique inside and outside the gym. In this episode we talk about his journey into fitness and the environment that helped him to create the identity.

Now a father of two toddlers we go on to talk about how important it is to put the fun back into movement, particularly for the younger generation. He goes on to share some excellent ideas to keep children active and how he survived a strict lockdown in Dubai whilst suffering from COVID-19.

It was great catching up with Phil after so long. We left so much more on the table to discuss so I am sure there will be a part two around the corner....

It's the start of Mens Health Week which is about raising awareness about health issues that impact the male population.

  • In the UK over 3 out of 4 suicides are by men and suicide is the biggest cause of death for men under 35
  • 12.5% of men in the UK are suffering from mental health disorders.
  • Men are nearly three times more likely than women to become alcohol dependent and are more likely to die from illegal drug use.

Our social evolution has brought about terms like "man up" and "boys don't cry" which has made it difficult for men to open up about mental health issues.

In this episode I talk with Alex Manzi who is an author, coach, podcaster but above all a human soul, (who happens to be male!) who has experienced mental health ups and downs like the rest of us. He was kind enough to share his story of how he battled with depression in his 20's and his journey to a better state of being.

Lifestyle medicine has become increasingly popular within the last 10 years. But what exactly is it? And what does a Lifestyle Doctor do?

In this episode I had the privilege of talking to not one, but two lifestyle doctors, Raj Karsandas and Chang-Sun Park to answer those questions plus many more.

Raj (along with his wife) founded the Lifestyle Doctors which is a private practice that aims to deliver holistic, whole person care that helps to reverse or treat patients conditions. Raj has been a General Practitioner (GP) and more recently completed a diploma in Lifestyle Medicine with the British Society for Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM). Raj is passionate about supporting patients in overcoming psychological factors and stressors which lead to ill health.

Chang has been in general practice since 2009 and in that time she has witnessed the impact that stress and lifestyle has on patients. Her passionate belief is that finding health in every sense requires dedicated and generous attention to the whole of our being – physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual.

She has also been practicing yoga for over 10 years and is a qualified yoga teacher. Chang uses yoga as a lifestyle intervention to help patients improve their overall wellbeing. She too has completed her diploma in Lifestyle Medicine from the BSLM.

We discuss lifestyle medicine, some of the obstacles facing this movement, as well as their top tips on how we can all improve our own wellbeing through 5 simple practices.

To find out more please check the links in the episode description or the show notes page on my website.

Every 2 minutes someone is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. 4.7 million people in the UK have diabetes and there are a further 12.3 million people at increased risk. By 2030 more than 5.5million people will have diabetes. 10,350 people in the UK have kidney failure because of their diabetes. Every week diabetes leads to 169 lower leg amputations, 680 strokes, 530 heart attacks, nearly 2000 cases of heart failure and 500 premature deaths. (Source: Diabetes.org.uk)

There is good news. Type 2 diabetes is preventable. Even better news is that it is preventable without taking any medication. Following a balanced healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, managing stress and improving your sleep can be the road away from type 2 diabetes. Good things come in 3's: help is at hand and you no longer have to navigate the the world of living a healthy lifestyle on your own. The NHS Diabetes Prevention Prevention Programme (NDPP) is a free service to anyone living in the UK who is at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is a lifestyle change programme that will raise your awareness of what impacts your health and provide you with the tools to you need to successfully reduce your risk and live a happier and healthier life.

You no longer need a GP referral or blood test to qualify for the programme. You can simply go online and fill in the Know Your Risk tool which will ask you a few basic questions about you and your health. If your risk is high enough you will be able to self refer to the programme.

You can also self refer if you have previously had gestational diabetes (a type of diabetes that some women get during pregnancy).

In this episode I speak with Lauren Munnelly who is a Regional Manager for the NDPP with Xyla Health and Wellbeing (formerly ICS Health and Wellbeing). We talk about why it is important for all of us to know our risk, what the programme is all about and how you can refer yourself.

To find out more please check the links in the episode description or the show notes page on my website.

Energy medicine is a branch of complementary and alternative medicine which draws its knowledge from the ancient wisdom of an ever-present, all-encompassing life force. It is this energy that interacts continuously with our bodies to bring back homeostasis - a state of healthful balance. The field of energy medicine synergistically unites this invaluable knowledge with the emerging science of quantum physics. This has given rise to a new branch known as bioenergetics.

Maximilian is a Certified Bioenergetic Practitioner, Accredited Meditation and Mindfulness Teacher as well as a Certified Wholistic Guide for Health and Wellness. He joined me for a fascinating discussion into the world of energy medicine and bioenergetics. Grab your notepad and a hot drink and enjoy the conversation!

Christmas is over. January is here. However it feels a bit different this year. Perhaps there isn't the same level of optimism that usually arrives with the new year. For some it is also a stressful time. Lockdown 3.0 means more of us working from home again, kids homeschooling, worrying about new strains of the virus. All of this can impact the levels of stress in our life.

In this episode I sit down with the lovely wife, Anisha Patel to talk about what we have been doing to help us deal with the stresses that this new way of life has brought about.

Thank you for choosing to listen, I hope you enjoy the content as much as I enjoy creating it.

Over half a million adults were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the last 5 years (source: NHS). The long term impact on health is severe; stroke, heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, limb amputation and early death.

To combat this the NHS is delivering a new programme which provides a low calorie diet as treatment for those who are overweight and Type 2 diabetic. This programme has been born from two clinical trials (DiRECT and DROPLET) which showed that those individuals can reduce diabetes related medication and in some cases put their Type 2 diabetes into remission (no longer have diabetes).

In the DiRECT trial 25% of participants achieved a weight loss of 15kg or more and of these 86% put their diabetes into remission (after 12 months).

In this episode I talk with Tara Abi-Chahine who is a dietician at ICS Health & Wellbeing. She has been responsible for replicating these trials through ICS's own pilot programme which is being rolled out in a number of locations in the UK. We talk at length about her findings, what the programme consists of and how it is works practically for participants.

It is a fascinating area of research which is helping so many live happier and healthier lives. To find out more about the programme and to see the research check the links in the show notes.

In this episode I am joined by GP, lifestyle medicine physician, podcaster, author and mother Dr. Alka Patel! Alka has been a medical doctor for over 20 years. Her own experience with burnout led her to a hospital bed. It was at this time that she realised that prioritising her own health was the most important thing she could do to help her career flourish. She also came to the conclusion that the medical profession was heading in the wrong direction. There was an over reliance of medication, and often this would not be the answer to our health problems. She discovered lifestyle medicine and has used in a practical and sustainable way.

Through her own research she created the Lifestyle First Method ÂŽ which is a scientifically proven approach to optimal health.

In this episode we talk about her definition of lifestyle medicine, finding our purpose in life and the key components of behaviour change. It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Dr. Patel and I am grateful she found the time in her busy schedule to speak with me. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did.

Thank you for choosing to listen, I hope you enjoy the content as much as I enjoy creating it.

Sam and Julia are the co-founders of TeachStrong. Having worked as teachers they know first hand the challenges that the teaching profession involves. Their mission is to empower teaching staff to prioritise themselves in order to take care of others. Looking after the wellbeing of those who are there to inspire the future generation is no small task. I for one as a parent value the role teaching staff play in shaping the lives of our children. The role of a teacher is so much more than teaching children academics. They are role models, councillors, friends and so much more. Teachers give so much of their energy to the children and often forget to look after number one.

That’s where TeachStrong come in. They offer online and in person courses and workshops that focus on nutrition, movement, inner growth, sleep and community. In this episode we discuss what motivated them to start TeachStrong, the challenges facing teaching staff and they expand on their 5 pillars and explain why these are so important.

In this episode I am joined by Dr. Nilesh Satguru. Dr. Satguru is a coach, speaker and GP (medical doctor). He is certified in Occupational Medicine, internationally certified in Lifestyle Medicine and a regional director for the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM). His mission is to inspire the community to believe in growth.

I reached out to Dr. Satguru via an e-mail. What struck me immediately was that he wanted to speak to me on the phone! He wanted to see beyond the words written in the e-mail and really get to know me. Right away I knew we were aligned on so many values. Since our first conversation, we have kept in regular contact. I consider Nilesh as a friend and someone who provides me with inspiration in my personal and professional life. The conversations we have had offline have been rewarding, more so given the lack of connection we have all faced in 2020.

There was so much I wanted to speak to him about. In this episode we talk about what Lifestyle Medicine is and we go deep on the subject of sleep. Why sleep is so important to our health, we talk about some of the common ,myths surrounding sleep and Dr. Satguru gives us some excellent guidance on how we can all improve the quality of our sleep. He rounds off the episode with a wonderful and personal sleep story that he wrote himself. Be sure to stick around for that!

I have no doubt that you will be hearing from Dr. Satguru again on this podcast.

Thank you for choosing to listen, I hope you enjoy the content as much as I enjoy creating it.

Sarika Shah is a registered dietitian and nutritionist (RD/RND) in the US. She has also taught nutrition courses at San Jose State University. She is now providing nutrition consoling to adults and children of all ages within her private practice.

I reached out to Sarika to specifically talk about nutrition advice for the Indian community. We are both Indian by ethnicity, more specifically Gujarati. In the UK and the US ethnic minority populations are at high risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Often the nutrition guidance provided by governments is too generic for these populations to understand or relate to. Sarika’s aim is to bridge that gap with the work that she does.

In this episode we discuss why ethnic minorities might be at higher risk of disease, where they might be going wrong with their food, what to put on your plate, portion sizes and much more.

Ever wondered why you crave food? Why you reach for food in a moment of stress? How about trying to go on a “diet”, losing some weight, to then only gain it all back again? How about counting calories and macros and finessing the art of nutrition in the hope to shed the fat? Joyce Diebels has gone through all of that and more! Not only that but she has suffered from hypothyroidism, PCOS and a multitude of gastrointestinal issues. Joyce had been emotionally eating since she was 4 years old. It took her 20 years of experimenting, becoming aware and learning how to break this viscous cycle.

She did this by first becoming aware of her mind. Focusing on personal development and mindset and eventually immersing herself into the world of personal coaching. Not long after she witness a huge transformation within and feeling happy and accepting of herself.

Joyce is now a personal development and health coach helping other women from enduring the same vicious cycle that she went through.

In this episode she reveals her personal story of suffering and how she eventually arrived at the solution. We talk about overeating and cravings, where they come from, mental conditioning and much more.

Thank you for choosing to listen, I hope you enjoy the content as much as I enjoy creating it.

Mental health awareness is on the rise in 2020. Even before COVID-19 it was a topic that has been discussed openly and I for one welcome it. This is why I reached out to Matteo. He is a business development professional working within the digital industry. He has steadily gained a passion for organisational design. This however is not why I invited him on to the podcast. Matteo and his partner Dora founded the podcast Stepsero. The aim was to spread awareness of the topic of mental health within the modern workplace. Having worked within the corporate world and gaining an insight into the taboo that mental health has there, I feel very strongly about modern work places removing the taboo and making it something that is openly discussed.

Matteo has suffered his own share of burnout and depression and this has led him on to this path to engage employers to think about employee motivation, work stressors, management styles to ensure workers are protected against threats to their mental well-being.

In this episode we talk about his journey, why mental health awareness within the workplace is important, what organisations are doing well and where they can make improvements.

Thank you for choosing to listen, I hope you enjoy the content as much as I enjoy creating it.

Dr. Charlotte Huntley has over 18 years of experience as an accomplished epidemiologist, microbiologist, consultant, career coach and podcaster. She holds a PhD in Public Health and a Masters of Public Health as well as a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research Administration. Needless to say, when it comes to public health, Dr. Huntley is a fountain of knowledge as I have discovered in my conversations with her.

She is the host and producer of the Public Health Epidemiology Careers Podcast and the For My Health Today Podcast, which demonstrate her unique communication style and her ability to inspire individuals and communities to take positive action and drive positive outcomes.

In this episode Dr. Huntley and I talk about the importance of lifestyle changes in helping us avoid disease. In particular we discuss the prevalence of type 2 diabetes amongst the ethnic minorities in both the US and UK.

She is a big advocate of using walking as medicine. Having gone through her own battles with health, Dr. Huntley used walking as a way to help improve her health both physically and mentally.

Dr. Huntley gives us a run down of the benefits of engaging in more physical activity before finally leaving us with some great take away tips to improve our health that we can all start to incorporate into our lives.

The new normal that we are all facing has blurred the lines between work, school, family and health. This is has left many women suffering from burnout which manifests itself in many ways, whether it’s added stress, increasing feelings of anxiety or fatigue.

Lissette Gole is the founder of Sanctuary Wellness Collective which provides women with access to a “sanctuary” of experts, coaching and tools with the goal of simplifying their journey to alignment.

Lissette holds a degree in psychology, she is a Certified Meditation Instructor, Holistic Health Coach and is actively involved in public speaking engagement about self empowerment and self healing. On top of all that she is on the leadership team at Google, where she also continues to spread her message of holistic health to employees and clients alike.

Her passion for helping high-achieving women focus on mind and body integration (holistic health) began one decade ago when pregnant with her first child. Trying to be everything to everyone (except herself!) fuelled progressive autoimmune disease. Over the course of 10 years, her autoimmune issues became so severe, she was bound to weekly hospital visits, medication cocktails and severe pain that threatened every aspect of her career and family. To empower her own healing, she immersed herself in research literature, professional expertise and lifestyle changes which led her to the path of understanding deeply the power and science behind the mind and body connection.

As Lissette spoke with other high-achieving women giving themselves to work, family, friends, she discovered that many were struggling with some form of fatigue, anxiety, stress, or illness as they were giving more than personal capacity allowed. The curiosity for furthering her own health has evolved into a calling to help other women re-balance and simplify the path to reaching their unique potential so they can give the best they have to offer to the world without sacrificing themselves.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Her own personal journey,
  • Her three pillars of holistic health (growth mindset, equanimity and nutrition)
  • How the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our holistic health
  • And finally Lissette provides 3 easy to action tips that will help you to get started in your own journey to alignment.

The health and fitness industry is a confusing place. Too many mixed messages that just get recycled as the years pass. One of the aims of this podcast is to help simplify the journey and raise the awareness that it really doesn't need to be as complex as it may first seem. My guest on this episode is 100% aligned with this message.

Claire McNulty is the founder of Align and Thrive with the mission to create a space that promotes a holistic approach to wellness; a place for people to leave their troubles behind and begin to understand the greater connections between the body, the breath and the mind.

Having been a student of yoga for 20 years, she took the plunge and became a yoga teacher in 2019. She is also a Civil Servant for the UK government, a wife and a mother of 2 boys. She understands the pressure, stresses and strains that we are under in the modern world, whether that's as parents, carers or simply caught up in the corporate world.

In this episode we talk about her own journey into health and how what she thought was the picture of health was not what it turned out to be. Claire talks about the moment she realised that she wanted to follow her passion, what she has learnt along the way, how she overcame hormonal issues and how she incorporates staying well into her busy life. We discuss the band aid approach to health, which I'm glad to say is changing, but it is still ingrained in the mindset of the general population. Towards the end of the episode Claire shares some simple and effective ways that you can get started for yourself, so be sure to stick around till then!

She's back! I am of course talking about Anisha, the better half. A lot has changed in the short time since her last episode. Anisha has started her own podcast, The Pharmacist Diaries and she's been a guest on other podcasts. As a family we have upped our game in terms of creating helpful and healthy lifestyle habits, like waking up at 4.30am every weekday to make time for exercise, relaxation and some time for ourselves (this is usually reading).

She has been amazed at what a few weeks of consistently doing something can do for her mind and body, and how much focus and direction it has brought into her life.

Anisha puts her new found way of life down to the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. More surprisingly neither of us have finished reading the book! Yet the changes we have made have been profound. We talk in depth about some of these changes and how our a simple mindset shift has brought new focus and energy into our lives.

She also talks about her podcast, which as you will hear it is something she is very passionate about. In fact I have never seen her this passionate about anything that was not work or family related. She discusses the future for the podcast which has evolved at a rapid pace.

Finally we have a little announcement that we share for the first time in the episode (and no, it's not what you are thinking!).

This week I speak to Elaine Bellew who is a yoga instructor based in Dubai. I met Elaine while I was a group exercise instructor and she was one the regulars in my fitness classes. Her story is a great example of finding something that you are really passionate about and and making that an integral part of your life. Like all stories there is a pivotal turning point. And this for Elaine was when she suffered a cycling accident that led her to the world of corrective exercise and Pilates. Having witnessed the power of Pilates in her rehabilitation she found yoga and the love affair began. After a few years of practicing yoga along side her other fitness interests she took the leap of faith to leave her family and travel to India for a month to undergo her yoga teacher training. Her story will resonate with many as we have all been at that junction at some stage in our lives.

We talk about her international travel experiences, from backpacker through to living in corners of the world, meeting her husband in Australia and how they came to settle in Dubai. Her experience with physical activity and exercise and why yoga made a big impact on her life.

Most people would be shocked to know that around 22,000 people with diabetes die early every year. Type 2 diabetes is a leading cause of preventable sight loss in people of working age and is a major contributor to kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke.

There are currently 3.4 million people with Type 2 diabetes in England with around 200,000 new diagnoses every year. While Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented and is not linked to lifestyle, Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable through lifestyle changes.

Haya Murad is a clinical nutritionist and a diabetes prevention coach. She works on the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme as well as running her own private nutrition clinic. In this episode we talk all about diabetes. Covering the various types of diabetes, through to complications, symptoms and treatment. We focus mainly on type 2 diabetes as this is largely preventable through lifestyle changes.

Those changes are improving nutrition (EAT), increasing physical activity (MOVE), managing stress and improving sleep (LIVE).

Whether you are at risk of diabetes or not, the information in this episode applies to any of us out there living in the modern world. It was a pleasure to have Haya on the show and I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed recording it.

I really enjoyed this conversation, Nikhil and I have so much in common from our own journey through to the way we approach coaching. Nikhil is a personal trainer and coach who is passionate about behaviour and habit change.

Having gone through his own personal body transformation from being an overweight, body conscious and slightly shy student to someone who has the confidence and knowledge to coach others through a similar journey.

Nikhil started life as a pharmacist (and he still is) but soon realised that this was not stoking his fires when it came to his career. He felt that he could help more people make positive changes to their lives as a health and fitness professional.

In this episode we talk in depth about behaviour and habit change: how do you create healthy habits? Why exercise and nutrition is not the only aspects of your health you need to look, the steps you need to take in order to illicit change and how to create accountability in your own health journey.

It's full of some of my favourite analogies about health and habits as well as three great tips from Nikhil to get you started on your own path to wellness!

Reach out to Nikhil through his social channels (links below) for a consultation.

It will be well worth it, no matter where you are with your own health and wellness.

Sunil is a meditation coach and founder of Pause and Play. In this episode we talk about how he found his way to a daily meditation practice through a tiny habit of 1 minute per day as a teenager. We discuss how the human mind has evolved over millions of years but only very recently has it had to deal with the barrage of information that attacks us in our daily life which puts a strain on our mental energy.

Sunil goes on to explain how many thoughts we have in a day and how it can be difficult to have any clarity when our minds are so full. He talks about the benefits of a meditation practice, what is meditation (hint: it's not what you think!) and how you can start your very own practice with 3 easy techniques. It was a pleasure to speak to a young man who is so aware of mental fitness and its importance in our life.

If you've been interested in meditation but haven't been sure how to start then this episode will set you off in the right direction.

Ever since I decided to start a podcast, the first person I wanted a guest is Laxmi Patel. This is a friendship that spans 30 years, and a relationship that no matter the distance, the ups, the downs, or months of no communication, we just seem to carry on like nothing ever happened when we get together. It is to me what a “real” friendship means in todays society of virtual friends. Connections like this are few and far between and I am very grateful to have this one.

Her journey, like all of us, has been full of ups and downs. But it’s is the way she rebounds from all of these that is so fascinating. We talk about not understanding true purpose when we were younger, and how we thought differently to the cookie cutter approach to life. The journey she went on to discover this purpose, the obstacles along the way and how she has overcame them.

This journey includes transforming her life after the birth of her first child, becoming a personal trainer, discovering the love of Muay Thai, living a healthy lifestyle and the influence it has had on her children.

In late 2019 Laxmi was diagnosed with breast cancer. We go into how she dealt with this and how her mindset has been a huge anchor in helping her get through it. My hope is that her inspirational story can help others out there that may be going through the same.

It was one of those conversations that flew by and we didn’t realise we had been talking for so long. Stick around for the ride!

In this episode I sit down and speak to Ross Gilmour who is the co-founder of Better Body Collective in Dubai. They are a team of fitness and nutrition specialists that help people transform their bodies, optimise health and maximise living. What I really like about their approach is that it is tailor made according to the individual. Now you’ve probably heard that before. But it’s a lot more than one person wanting to gain muscle or another wanting to lose weight. They look at the lifestyle of the individual and the habits of this person and whether those habits enable them to successfully complete the programme. They also look at aspects like sleep and stress. If you’re a regular listener, you will know I have spoken about the importance of these in any balanced healthy lifestyle. Finally everything they do is backed by science. They will consider the facts when it comes to what approach works best. If a client a vegan then they will think about what the science says about living a healthy life omitting animal products from your diet (making sure the individual supplements with B12, vitamin D and considers a good omega 3 source), if someone doesn’t eat dairy then again they will consider the scientifically proven alternatives to being healthy.

The reason I was so keen to interview Ross is that in my time working in the fitness industry, the most dedicated individuals when it comes to nutrition were those comporting in bodybuilding, physique or other similar discipline. Whilst many of us struggle to find our way with our health journeys, this group of people know what really works and what it really takes. So when it comes to nutrition myths, these guys have heard them all and they know a red herring when they see one.

Ross talks about the following nutrition myths on this episode:

  • Low carb diet is the only way to lose weight
  • All fat is bad for you
  • Eggs are bad for you
  • Coconut oil healthy or not?
  • Vegan and vegetarian diets are healthier than the standard omnivorous diet
  • We talk about the importance of sleep and how the greatest athletes that have ever lived include sleep optimising as part of their training.

This week I sat down with Ali Asid, a friend and former work colleague, to talk all things reformer Pilates and injury prevention. Ali is a Sports Therapist specialising in treating injuries using a holistic solution. What does that mean? It means looking at injuries differently to how people traditionally look at them. Rather than focusing on the symptom, "my back hurts", and treating the back, he looks at what has a caused the back pain in the first place. This could be poor posture, sitting for too long, weak or inactive muscles elsewhere in the body. As I always say, you are what you do all the time not what you do some to the time. If you spend most of your time sitting, whether that be in front of a laptop, computer, TV or in a car, chances are you are not sitting with any awareness of posture. Over time, the body compensates and eventually this can manifest itself as pain, and it’s usually the back that has to take the punishment, through not fault of its own.

We talk about what reformer Pilates is, and why it is so good at helping those that want to rehabilitate from injuries but also how it can make you stronger and help your body move the way it is supposed to. Think of it like an M.O.T test for your car (for my friends outside the UK this is an annual inspection to any vehicle you own. It is mandatory by law).

Currently Ali is a reformer Pilates instructor at Chilli Pilates in Hertfordshire. He uses his deep understanding of anatomy to help people simply move better and a by-product of that is often the easing of pain.

Why not get in touch with Ali for a consultation, you can email him:

Get your pilates on!

This week I am joined by my friend Julie Avery. Not only is Julie a friend but she is one of the most knowledgable and experienced pilates instructors I have ever met. Julie and I met in Dubai whilst working for a small boutique gym called Optimal Fitness. She has a wealth of experience in the fitness industry and this is reflected by the loyal following she has in all her classes. Her pilates classes always had a waiting list and I would see the same people turn up each week without fail.

In this podcast we talk about what motivated her to get into the fitness industry, how she found her way to pilates, why pilates is good for the body and what she is doing now since moving back to the UK.

As fellow instructors we talk about group exercise instruction, why you need to be careful in choosing an instructor and what we look out for in other instructors. We discuss pilates technique and exercise technique in general. Here Julie speaks to the fact that pilates movement are very precise and controlled and how important it is to do them correctly. I want to stress that doing them correctly is very different from doing them perfectly. Not everyone (if anyone at all!) has perfect technique and this can be down to limitations in our muscles and joints. But just because you have these limitations doesn’t mean you can’t do the exercise correctly. This may mean taking a regression or breaking the movement down into smaller parts and working on each part separately. Making sure that your spine is in alignment and other joints and muscles are moving the way they are supposed to even if that means that the range of movement is limited. The goal is to do the movement SAFELY for your body.

Back by popular demand my wife Anisha joins me again. We discuss our thought process in trying to install the health values we believe in our daughter. From preparing for the pregnancy to post birth and current day. We talk about some of the things we have put in place to help her to come to her own realisation about the benefits of eating a whole food nutritious diet. My aim is to give parents some practical information that can be used to aid this process of health education.

Today I am joined by my first ever guest on the Stay Whole podcast, my wife! Anisha and I discuss her recent achievement of running 13.1 miles (a half marathon), how she went about it in a very short space of time, and what kept her motivated even when the official event was cancelled due to COVID-19. We go on to talk about motivation, parenting and setting small achievable goals.

With more and more of us staying at home due to the current restrictions, I'm concerned that it may lead us to over eat. My concerns are validated when I speak to friends and family who tell me they are finding it too easy to reach for the snacks. Add to that the fact that many of us are moving a lot less than we are used to, our body's need to energy will have gone down drastically.

We will beat COVID-19, I'm sure of it, however I'm more concerned about the state of our health after the pandemic is over. Obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease can all be as a result of excess energy intake and reduced energy output.

In this episode I talk about the mechanisms behind why we overeat and then go onto providing a few simple and effective things we can do to try and curb this over eating.
