On the Ground’s very own contributor Lydia Curtis led a group of girls from Ward 8 on a cultural exchange trip to the nation of Colombia. And fresh back from reporting in Iran, Journalist Max Blumenthal spoke at Busboys and Poets about his trip, and about being detained at a U.S. airport and having his devices seized.

For this hour, we hear from two Muslim women who resigned from the Biden administration in reaction to the administration’s support for the genocide in Gaza. Maryam Hassanein, was a special assistant in land minerals and management at the Department of the Interior. Hala Rharrit is a former career diplomat with 18 years in the U.S. Foreign service. Her last assignment was as an Arabic language spokesperson for the State Department in the United Arab Emirates. In April 2024, Rharrit became the first American diplomat to publicly resign in protest of the Biden administration’s Gaza policy, condemning it as failed, illegal and inhumane. They were both interviewed in an online forum sponsored by CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

Meanwhile a group of activists protested at the U.S. mission to the U.N., urging them to take action to stop Israel’s attacks on Gaza. In Ohio, a police officer has been indicted on murder and other charges in the shooting of a 21-year-old pregnant Black mother. Comemmorations were held in Ferguson, Missouri, to mark the 10th anniversary of the 2014 murder of Michael Brown. After four byears of house arrest, a Houston man, Muzzamil Zaidi, was sentenced to time already served because he transferred funds for humanitarian relief in Yemen through religious leaders in Iran. On Friday August 16, the DC for Ceasefire Coalition staged a city-wide action called Not Another Bomb to call for an immediate ceasefire and arms embargo on Israel.

We spend the hour hearing from Black farmers and their advocates who traveled to DC on March 1 from 15 states to rally in front of the White House and demand that President Biden fire Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack for continuing more than a century of state-sponsored race discrimination, land theft, and economic deprivation of Black farmers.
The protest was also commemorating a March 2, 1999 fairness hearing when hundreds of Black farmers also descended on D.C. to protest the forced consent decree issued in Pigford v. Glickman, the landmark Black farmer discrimination case that was implemented so poorly that Black farmers lost 1.5 million acres of land as thousands were forced into foreclosure and lost everything they owned. According to the investigative report, How the Government Helped White Americans Steal Black Farmland, Nathan Rosenberg conservatively estimates that the theft of Black farmers land and generative income amounts to $326 billiion today.

Two weeks after Congress disgraced itself by denying freight railroad workers seven days of sick leave, rail workers and their supporters rallied on Capitol Hill and across the country for what they said is a basic human right. As the legislative calendar for Congress comes to a close, people are marching in DC to get the attention of lawmakers and the White House to pass the Build Back Better Act to meet the human needs of Americans families, fight climate catastrophe and keep fading promises made by Democrats to win the White House, House and Senate. We’ll hear voices on the rights of the undocumented and a call for Congress to keep a path to citizenship on its agenda. But first we go to the White House, where on Dec. 5th, there was the third of three mass “Hands Off Ethiopia” demonstrations by the Washington, DC-area Ethiopian community, the largest population of Ethiopians outside of their native country. They are protesting U.S. support of the terrorist organization the TPLF, the Tigrayan Peoples Liberation Front, which is waging war against the democratically elected government of Abiy Ahmed and is terrorizing the country.

As a far-right majority on the Supreme Court heard arguments this week in a case that could overturn the landmark abortion rights law, Roe v. Wade, reproductive justice activists spoke outside the court at the Abortion Is Essential Rally.
