Dinero Done With Confidence

View Details

It’s official! Her Dinero Matter’s 10-year birthday is here and I still can’t believe it. This episode is all about celebration, and we’ll do just that with a thorough review of the most unexpected truths I’ve learned about money, identity and what it really takes to feel financially confident, especially when you’re carrying cultura, family and dreams on your shoulders. Are you ready to dig deep into these money lessons? Although this podcast has evolved over the years, the original vision still remains: the conversations we’ve had so far reflect the financial journeys of many, with a focus on how money intersects with language, culture, and upbringing, especially for Latinas. Today’s convo is all about highlighting something so many of us have already suspected: how money is deeply emotional and our decisions are often shaped by our upbringing, and this emotion is valid. It also emphasizes that every financial journey is unique and valid, progress is personal, and cultural expectations greatly influence money management.

In this episode, I’m sharing the most unexpected truths I’ve learned about money, identity and what it really takes to feel financially confident, especially when you’re carrying cultura, family and dreams on your shoulders. Some of these lessons were beautiful, some were uncomfortable, but all of them were life changing. You might think this is just a celebration episode, but it’s really a turning point. Let’s get to it.

What you’ll learn in this episode:* Why money is deeply emotional and how financial decisions are significantly shaped by our upbringing and cultural expectations. * The importance of having open money conversations with your community. * Why money confidence doesn’t come in a one-size-fits-all envelope.

Have you ever hoped you could respond to financial stress in a more constructive, less anxiety-ridden way? Well, here is some good news: it is possible to use the wisdom of your bodily sensations to regulate your nervous system and get out of money stress mode. In this week’s episode, Sandra Hinojosa dives into big stuff like how money can be used as a weapon in relationships and what it really takes to feel safe and confident making financial decisions. Ready to be inspired? If you’ve experienced a financial setback and had your mind spiraling out of control because of it (even when, deep down inside, you know that life happening is to be expected and no big deal), you know there are times when our bodies just seem to have a mind of their own: no matter how much we try to think “positively” or intellectualize the situation, our typical anxious response is always there, waiting to jump on us.

Ever wondered why this happens? The short response to this is that our money experiences are deeply connected to how the body stores memories and traumas, particularly those related to early experiences with money. These experiences can create automatic responses that bypass logical thinking, especially in moments of perceived financial threat.

The good news is that there is a way out of this patterned “response” and this is exactly what Sandra Hinojosa, this week’s HDM guest will share with us. In today’s episode, Sandra emphasizes the importance of recognizing and tuning into the body’s signals or “cues” to distinguish between a genuine, current threat and a past trauma response.

Sandra Hinojosa Ludwig is a somatic experience and practitioner, ICF train certified coach, award winning, best selling author of Chica, Why Not?

What you’ll learn in this episode:* What’s the impact of early money experiences on the nervous system and why understanding this matters. * How to tune into your body’s signals and cues to deal with financial stress. * The 3 things you can start doing today to live an aligned life.

Have you ever had that weird moment where you realize your money habits aren’t entirely yours? That maybe, just maybe, you’re playing out a script written long before you were born? That’s the exact realization this week’s HDM guest had a few years ago. In this episode, I have a vulnerable and insightful conversation with Antuanett Lopez, where we talk about money stress, her journey from Peru to the US, and the impact this has had on her financial decisions. Let’s jump right in!More often than not, money stories have nothing to do with factual, very much in-your-face numbers; it’s about the emotions, the unspoken fears, and the silent lessons we carry. Those first impressions, the ones we often don’t even realize are there, can shape our financial lives in ways we never imagined (yes, money stress is a thing). A simple phrase overheard, a look of stress on a parent’s face, these tiny moments become the foundation of our relationship with wealth. They whisper stories of scarcity or security, fear or freedom, long before we ever balance a checkbook. It’s this undercurrent, the emotional weight behind the numbers, that truly drives our decisions.

Understanding how our money stories came to be and how they have shaped our decisions is something that is crucial to reshape our financial futures. This is why, in this week’s HDM episode, we delve into the intricate connections between our upbringing, cultural influences, and the money stress that, more often than not, brings unconscious narratives into our financial lives.

Antuanett Lopez is a bilingual mental health therapist dedicated to providing culturally competent care that supports personal development and healing through connection, education, and self-awareness. Antoinett has a private practice with a mission to create healthier generations and focuses.

What you’ll learn in this episode:* The connection between money, survival, sacrifice, and silence in many Latino families. * Antoinett Lopez’s journey from Peru to the US and the financial challenges she and her mom faced. * The weight of generational expectations and the role of therapy in healing money wounds.

Have you ever caught yourself reflecting on a past event, only to realize how much your current life situation has changed? Not only that: in hindsight, you can now see how this experience has fundamentally altered the way you understand yourself and your life. If you find yourself nodding along, this episode’s journey on resilience and reinvention might just resonate with you. Join me as I welcome back Jackie Velez for a conversation about navigating life-altering shifts and discovering true abundance through adversity. We tend to map out our lives with certain assumptions, believing we know how we’ll face major challenges. We imagine ourselves responding with grace, logic, and strength. However, life rarely unfolds according to these plans. Reality often presents circumstances that are much more intricate and transformative than we could have predicted. These events can challenge the core of who we think we are and how we view the world.

So, let me ask you this: can you truly picture yourself handling the aftermath of a completely unexpected event? An event that throws your routines into disarray and forces you to question everything you believed to be true about yourself? Can you imagine your relationships, values, and even your definition of what it means to be successful undergoing a fundamental shift after such a disruption?

If the thought feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. Life’s unexpected turns are a universal experience, and the path to navigating them is rarely straightforward —the insights and lessons often unfold along the way.

To truly bring this point home, in this week’s HDM episode, Jackie Velez is back on the podcast to share how her life took an unexpected turn following a significant car accident. In this convo, she shares her journey from scarcity to abundance unfolds through music, community, and raw vulnerability.

Jackie Velez is a wellness and music practitioner blending music, movement, and neuroscience to guide people into aligned, intentional living. Through a mix of sound journeys, custom meditations, and workshops, she helps others reconnect with their truth.

What you’ll learn in this episode:* The unforeseen obstacles of dealing with medical systems and financial concerns in a foreign country in the wake of a traumatic event. * A powerful transformation from a mindset of scarcity to recognizing the true riches of community and support. * How embracing spirituality, music, and deep-seated passions became instrumental in Jacqueline’s healing and metamorphosis.

If you’ve ever browsed your library’s psychology/self-help section, you know that boundaries are everywhere. No matter where you turn or who you ask, the topic always resurfaces, claiming its spot at the top of your list of good habits to acquire. However, one thing is talking about boundaries and another is actively setting them up. If you still struggle with this (FYI, you’re not alone!), maybe it’s time for a lil’refresher. In this week’s episode, I’m sharing a quick primer on boundaries, why they matter, and how having a couple of them firmly set can (and will!) enhance your holiday experience. If you are anything like me, you know actively setting up boundaries sounds way, way simpler in theory than in practice. The problem is that no one teaches how to do this, or even what types of boundaries to set and when. This lack of actionable insights becomes a glaring issue around the seasons when social interactions and demands for your time increase, such as the holiday season.

This is why, this week I decided to put together a quick reminder of why setting boundaries during busy seasons is so important and how would those boundaries look like.

What you’ll learn in this episode:* Why boundaries are important. * The types of boundaries you can set, especially during the holiday season. * Why setting solid boundaries is one of the best ways to preserve your mental health.

When was the last time that things didn’t go according to plan? If you’re anything like me, “quite often” is probably your answer (and there’s nothing wrong with that). The reason is simple: even the best thought and carefully weighted plans cannot keep life from happening, sometimes in the most random ways. In fact, although eliminating the unexpected from your life is almost impossible, no one ever teaches you how to react to life when things massively deviate from your original plan. This is why, in today’s episode, I’ll share with you five things you have to practice if you want to make your peace with the unexpected. We’ve all had a moment (or two) when we swore a plan or project would turn out alright. Maybe the whole thing was a low-stakes, low-pressure project where virtually nothing could go wrong, or maybe this plan was just replicating something you had already done in the past with a decent amount of success. In any case, the expectations were low, and your confidence soared.

This is why, when things didn’t turn out as expected, all you could do was stare at the facts in disbelief. Did you forget an important point? Were you not prepared enough? It may sound a tad irritating, but the answer is far simpler: unexpected circumstances usually happen… well, when you least expect it! And in no other sector is this as true as in finance.

In this HDM episode, I’ll be sharing a personal story that shows how life’s curveballs don’t have to derail you from your path.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* What does the unexpected have to do with your financial life? * Reasons why unexpected situations can be so overwhelming. * The 5 key lessons that you can take away from unexpected life disruptions.

Imagine waking up one regular Monday morning as you usually do… only to find out that all your income, close support network, and, in general, your regular financial support sources are forever gone, and now you’re back to square one (which, by the way, probably feels like square -1000). It may sound like a hard stretch, but for so many women, this nightmarish scenario highlights a common and real fear: the possibility of losing their stability in life because they don’t have their own money. And while this might sound scary, this week’s guests and dear friends will share how this lingering sense of insecurity pushed them to seek financial independence and, simultaneously, turned them into an inspiration to us all. Some people say the biggest lessons in life come whenever you least expect them, and today I’ll have to agree with the popular lore. In today’s episode, I’m having a conversation with two friends and fellow Accredited Financial Counselors®, Weslia Echols and Willa Williams who learned through their lived experiences why being financially independent is so important.

Weslia and Willa’s unique mission is to assist Christian women in embracing their STEWARD Identity. They aim to help women discover their unique path to creating wealth and achieving financial fulfillment. Through their company, Trinity Financial Coaching, and their weekly podcast, Wealth and Wisdom Together, they have created a safe space for women to learn and discuss money while trusting God, trusting themselves, and trusting the process.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Why financial independence should be a top priority in everyone’s life list. * A core characteristic of financial fulfillment that everyone should be aiming to have. * Willa and Weslia’s take on what’s the biggest financial barrier that most people face.

Intuitively, we all know that leaving your home country for good is a challenging experience. Adapting to a new place, language, culture, job market, AND financial system is anything but an easy feat. However, knowing that it’s hard and listening to the first-person account of someone who not only survived the experience but also managed to thrive and build a meaningful career is truly inspiring. In today’s episode, we are having an empowering conversation with Jhoanna Astudillo, the Hispanic segment leader in BOK Financial’s Consumer Division. Jhoanna will share with us her biggest money realizations and how they came to be. When was the last time you had a hard time cashing a check at your local bank? Or the last time you had to wait one hour for someone to help you do a simple money transfer? If the answer to those questions is some variation of “I’m not sure”, today’s episode will surely surprise you.

Like many immigrants, today’s guest had to re-start from scratch. From having to learn the language to figure out the U.S. financial system and, while on it, uncovering her limiting money story, Jhoanna’s journey will inspire you as much as it has inspired me.

Jhoanna Astudillo is the Hispanic segment leader in BOK Financial’s Consumer Division, and the first Hispanic person to serve in this position. She has worked in the financial industry since 2007. Previously, she served in the U.S. Army and has a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business and Marketing from Illinois State University.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Jhoanna’s story and why she was referred to as a “ghost”. * The steps Jhoanna has taken to improve her relationship with money. * How the financial industry is adapting to better service the Latino community and Jhoanna’s role in that.

Have you ever walked into a bank to request information about a product or service only to hear a long-winded and hard-to-understand explanation that, instead of providing answers, only creates more questions? This is an experience that almost everyone in the Latino community has experienced at least once in their lives. Not because financial concepts, in and by themselves, are too complex or impossible to understand. Not at all. Sometimes, it’s just because the ones giving all the explanations lack a foundational core element that, in an ideal world, every financial educator should have: cultural humility. In this week’s episode, Dr. Melinda Jimenez Perez will share with us what cultural humility is and why this not-so-obvious concept is essential when teaching (and learning!) about all things money.

Let’s be honest: money and finances may not be as complex or abstract of a topic as calculus or some good old geometry, but still, that doesn’t mean everyone will be able to understand the basic tenets at once. The way you think and interact with money can be completely different from the way I see it, and that doesn’t make any of us right or wrong. It’s just different.

According to Dr. Melinda Jimenez, understanding how our own culture impacts the way we see finances and what we can do to improve our situation (even when we might lack “basic” financial knowledge) is the essential working definition of cultural humility. In today’s episode, we will learn why cultural humility is essential for improving financial literacy in the Latino community.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* What cultural humility is and why it’s essential in financial education. * The power of representation in financial education. * The rise of financial resource centers and why they matter.

Having honest and open conversations about real topics with our close friends is an essential part of life. And sometimes, knowing what other people are chatting with their pals can be truly eye-opening. If you’ve ever wondered how a conversation between two GenX women who are going through similar life experiences sounds like, you’re in for a true reveal. In this week’s episode, I’m having an informal chat with my good friend Librada Estrada about our kids stepping into adulthood, our health, and, of course, preparing financially for our future. Have you ever found yourself going through challenges or circumstances that no one else seems to be relating to? It’s not that your issues are uncommon or only specific to you, not at all. It’s more that you would prefer to have an open conversation with someone who not only is close to you but is also going through the same life stage as you are. Someone who relates to your lived experience in the way only a close friend can.

Well, this week’s episode is a great opportunity to sneak peek into how such a conversation unfolds! This week I’m having an informal chat with my long-time friend Librada Estrada on all things money, planning, and, of course, health.

In this episode, you’ll get to be a fly on the wall while two GenX women going through similar experiences talk about life, money, and health.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Thoughts on helping your kids transition into adulthood (plot twist: it ain’t simple!) * Why always keeping in mind your future needs is the best mindset to have when thinking about retirement. * The importance of having (and holding to) a vision when setting up your goals.

If you are among the millions of people who rely on Google Maps to get to places, use Task Rabbit to find contractors, or have groceries delivered almost anywhere through Instacart, you are not alone. These services may feel like separate entities, but at the end of the day they all have one major thing in common: they are extremely convenient and, as such, most of them come with a hefty price tag. Does this mean you shouldn’t use them? The goal of this week’s episode is to answer that eternal question. Today, I’ll share my thoughts on the price of convenience and how you can use this bonus to your advantage.Picture the following scenario. It’s mid-week, and instead of decreasing, your workload is at an all-time high. You leave the office exhausted and in a daze, only to realize a few minutes into your commute that, yet again, you forgot about dinner. It seems that your brain just can’t plan a proper grocery haul so, just like you did last week, you decide to take the convenient approach. With just two or three flips through your phone screen, your problem is solved. Dinner will be served at your door in less than half an hour, courtesy of Uber Eats. Convenience may be just a noun, but on a busy Wednesday evening, when you have no mental space left available, it becomes a life-saver. The glue that holds together your packed schedule.

The only problem? Just like any luxury item, choosing the most convenient option usually has an extra fee. Yes, your meal delivery, house cleaning, and transportation services may be extra handy, but they ain’t cheap.

This is why in today’s episode we are going to have an in-depth discussion about the price of convenience. Why is it that the United States consumer loves convenience so much and what is the true price you are paying for getting some time back in your calendar?

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Snap history: how did these convenient services come to be? * One risk of relying too much on handy solutions. * Key things you need to know before signing up for these services.

Although no one likes to think about financial bumps, the harsh reality is that, as long as you have money in this game, financial loss will always be part of the spectrum of possible outcomes, and while I’m all about positive thinking, I also want to stress the importance of being prepared for even the worst case scenario. This is why, in this week’s episode I’ll share with you five reasons why you should have a backup plan to protect you when the possibility of total financial loss starts to loom over the horizon. We all have our own version of the worst nightmare ever. For some, that no-go scenario is filled with creepy crawlers (shudder), crazy heights, or bad news. For others horrible traffic jams, crowded places, and unfortunate circumstances are all that it takes to qualify something as a seriously bad dream. However, if we leave the specifics aside, we can all agree that most of us consider total financial loss as one of the most accurate definitions of nightmarish scenarios.

In today’s day and age, it’s hard to imagine a more anxiety-generating situation than the loss of all our material wealth. In fact, for some people, the possibility of experiencing total financial loss is such an unthinkable scenario that the act of simply considering the possibility is enough to trigger a mini-panic attack.

While I always strive to remain positive and uplifting, I have to recognize that sometimes being prepared for our worst-case scenarios does pay off. When it comes to total financial loss having a plan in place (aka, your emergency protocol) will always be a savvy choice.

This is why in this week’s episode, I’ll share with you five reasons why you should have a backup plan to protect you when the possibility of total financial loss starts to loom over the horizon.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Five key reasons why you should always be prepared, both for the good and the bad. * My insights on how I answered the “What would I do if…?” question. * How others have responded to this question and their big takeaways.

Splurging or saving? That is the question. And if you have a financial goal that requires you to save big and consistently, you probably know firsthand how stressful and frustrating spending decisions can feel. You see an item that catches your eye big time and, while former you would have proceeded to buy it without any additional thoughts, the new you is running a full forecasting projection the minute you gaze upon the price tag. If this scenario sounds familiar, you’re in good company! In this week’s episode, I’ll share with you a set of guiding questions that will help you navigate the delicate art of figuring out when it’s better to save and when it’s safe to splurge. No adult life is fully complete without a full set of (deceptively) crucial decisions. Whole wheat or white bread? Cats or dogs? A relaxing staycation or an adventurous one-week vacation? Green juice or salad? All of these will give you a few guaranteed harsh minutes.

However, when it comes to deceptively simple decisions, saying yay or nay to a specific purchase stands in its own category… especially when you’re committed to reducing your spending to the minimum (hello, Great Financial Goals!). What’s more, this mini-mental ordeal becomes even more challenging when you perceive said expense as something with the potential to transform your life (think high-end organic foods, hot and in-demand kitchen appliances, or home & garden items that just feel right).

If you are on a tight spending budget, but also feel compelled to just go and get that item now, the framework I will share in today’s episode might be just what you need. From navigating the complicated emotions that arise when spending decisions show their bizarre face, to actually understanding the thinking that takes place the minute you see that lush patio furniture, this episode has it all!

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* The I-Needed-This-Yesterday mentality sometimes plays tricks on you, and here’s why. * Why the road to Big Financial Goals is not always paved with sacrifices. * The five questions you need to ask yourself before making that spending decision.

Have you ever been through a phase in your life when all you want is a serious reset? If you suspect this need to overhaul everything won’t just go away with a few days off or even a short trip to the beach, you’ve landed in the right space. In this week’s episode, I’m sharing a few exciting updates on the direction this podcast will be taking in this new season. And, spoiler alert, it all boils down to one single thing: balance. How does life look like when we are so busy that we can’t even see properly what’s standing right in front of us? I’m sure that, like most women I know, at some point, you too have been overwhelmed and swamped by life’s circumstances. Whether it’s because you have a demanding job, are in charge of small children with multiple activities and conflicting schedules, or just happen to be the unlucky victim of a complicated commute, sometimes functioning without a good dose of overwhelm is just not an option. When that happens, all we need (all we crave, in fact) is a big, massive break.

Which is exactly what this podcast did over the summer since, just like you, I’ve also been through one of the busiest seasons ever.

Now that we are back, it is time to share some exciting (and much-needed) updates on what’s going on over the other side of the mic.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* A quick update on the format (hint: we are going back to our roots). * Two exciting business updates (did anyone say better resources?) * A quick recap of what’s happening on the personal side.

If you have a budget, I’m sure you know why keeping track of your expenses is important. What you probably don’t know is that daily ins and outs are not the only numbers worth tracking. In fact, if you want to truly stay on top of your finances there are four numbers you should keep an eye on. In this episode, I’ll share what these numbers are, how to keep up with them, and why tracking them will make a difference in the long run.Keeping track of your expenses is an essential part of budgeting: there’s just no way around it. However, I get why you might find this whole expense tracking thing a little bit tedious (or just plain boring!), especially if you are new-ish to budgeting and you’re still working on creating a system that works for you.

If that sounds all too familiar, this week’s episode might be just what you need. Today, we’ll start with a quick review of the basics of expense tracking (a lil’ refresher is always welcome!) and why it’s important to keep up with those numbers. Then, we’ll move on to the nitty-gritty of this week’s topic: four not-so-common numbers that you should keep in mind when evaluating your finances.

Most people don’t usually see big, drastic changes in these numbers month over month, but that doesn’t make them less important. Keeping a close eye on them will not only give you valuable info on your current financial situation, it will also help you find all sorts of growth opportunities.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Why expense tracking doesn’t have to be tedious. * 3 expense types to keep up with (and why they matter). * 4 numbers that are not that common, but are worth keeping in your tracker.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear “money rules”? If you’re anything like me, you probably think about complicated must-dos, or old-as-time financial practices that, by now, are pretty much set in stone. But, what if I told you that money rules don’t have to be inflexible (or even tied to money per se) to be effective and life-changing? Would you believe me? Well, let’s put that to the test! In today’s episode, I’ll share with you 8 money rules that have helped me take my money management to a whole new level. If every time you hear the words “money rules” you hear the distant echo of Scrooge McDuck rigidly screaming “I made my money by being tougher than the toughies and smarter than the smarties!”, maybe it’s time to reconsider your approach to the concept of “rules” (plot twist: being inflexible is not part a money rule job description! #notreally).

Here’s the deal: when it comes to money management & finances, having rules that work is crucial. Not only they will help you make better decisions (and in less time), but they can also reduce the mental load that usually comes with money management. However, just because rules are important it doesn’t mean they have to be rigid or set in stone. In fact. It’s quite the opposite!

My experience has taught me that the best money rules are those that are tailored to my situation and thus resonate deeply with my personal money story. And you know what? You can also have rules like these. This is why, in this episode, I’ll share with you 8 money rules that have helped me take my money management to a whole new level.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* The reason why not all money rules have to be about money (#gasp!) * How to set up money rules that work for you… when you are rule-averse. * Why creating your own money rules is 100% possible.

It’s happening! With this episode, Her Dinero Matters is officially hitting the 400-episode mark! To celebrate, I’ve put together a special episode that will break our traditional format but in a fun way! This week I’m sharing Her Dinero Matters Origin Story with you and the lessons I’ve taken home after recording 400 weekly episodes (#wild!). For most people (myself included), 400 may not feel like a huge number, but whenever I say out loud that I’ve spent almost nine years recording weekly podcast episodes to help women improve their relationships with money, I always get a shocked stare. NINE YEARS! That’s a lifetime. And I’m sure that lifetime magic is what contributes to making this episode feel extra special.

It all started in 2015 when podcasts that talked to women about money were not a very common sight. Yes, podcasting and financial advice in general existed, but the offer available back in the day did not match the specific vision I had in my head: a space where we could come together as women to talk about money, our money stories, and how those have impacted the way we lead our financial lives. Her Dinero Matters was born from that vision.

Over the years, the podcast has evolved and shifted directions in various ways. Not only that: recording hundreds of interviews with all sorts of amazing guests has also taught me precious lessons that I wouldn’t have learned otherwise.

This special episode aims to celebrate all that!

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* A deep-dive into Her Dinero Matters Origin Story. * Lessons learned after recording 400 episodes. * Featured feedback from listeners!

We all know about the importance of getting better at managing our finances, but many people come face to face with a giant wall when it comes to the practical side of things. Is there a specific routine or a way of doing things that facilitates everything? And if there is, how can you start implementing those best practices in your financial management? In this week’s episode, I’m going to share how I manage our household finances, the systems I use, and the things that could be improved. I don’t know if it’s just me, but with the boom of AI, I feel nowadays everyone is talking about systems and automation. Financial conversations are not the exception. While I am a huge fan of saving precious time by automating tasks, I also recognize that building effective systems to better manage your finances takes time and a good chunk of trial and error.

This is why in this week’s episode I’ve decided to share how I manage our household finances. I’ll talk about the systems that work for us, how I’ve built them, and some things that are still a work in progress (because, let’s be honest, when it comes to managing finances. there’s no such thing as perfection. Believe me, building this system as taken years and loads of trial and error). The goal of this episode is to inspire you to try something new in your current money management routine.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* The nitty gritty aspects of how I manage our household finances. * The importance of having a sound plan (aka, a budget!) as your starting point. * Why this system works for us now and what are some aspects that still need improvement.

If you are a regular consumer of financial content (hello podcasts!) and someone asked you for a quick recap of the five, most valuable lessons you’ve uncovered so far, what would your answer be? Well, I know for sure that my list wouldn’t include things like budgeting, savvy retirement planning, or only spending on stuff I need! Curious to know why? In this week’s episode, I’m sharing five underrated money lessons that have completely changed the way I relate to money. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about all the money advice that just exists out there in the world. I’ve been working in this industry for more than ten years now (!) and despite the massive amount of financial content that is poured every day into the internet, there are foundational topics that, to this day, still don’t get much attention.

Yes, we all “know” about the importance of having a budget, planning our expenses, thinking about retirement early on, and, in general, all those financial how-to’s that, once mastered, make your life easier. And yet, despite already having that information, so many of us still struggle with keeping up with the “basics”. Have you ever wondered why?

In today’s episode, I will share with you five underrated money lessons that, to this day, not that many people speak about. These are lessons I’ve acquired through my 10+ years of experience in the financial industry and, boy, understanding them has been an absolute game-changer!

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* The 3 keys to adaptability with your money. * The importance of having mindful indulgences. * Why debt is not (always) the devil’s cousin.

You might have learned that not spending money on things you don’t really need is the best (and, quite possibly, the only) way to save money in the long run. But, what if I told you that buying things that you want can lead to saving some extra money? In this week’s episode, I’ll share with you four purchases that improved my life (and added some extra joy!). If you got most of your financial education from old-school financial advisors, you might be all too familiar with the most important “spending” rule ever: don’t waste your money buying things that you don’t need. This includes stuff like clothing, fancy trips, expensive gadgets, a second car, and, in general, anything that is not an essential need (think food and shelter).

While there’s nothing wrong with this advice, the harsh truth is that, in real life, Needs and Wants are rarely two well-defined and distinct categories. In fact, both are quite subjective: your Needs and Wants will vary depending on your circumstances, the place where you live, your cultural context and the season of life you’re currently moving through (among other things).

So, how can you learn to distinguish between them?

In this episode, I’ll share with you four purchases that ended up improving my life in so many ways. My goal is to give you some food for thought and inspire you to consider your spending habits with a new perspective.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Why well-intentioned advice, such as “just splurge less”, often falls flat. * The reason why “Needs” and “Wants” are not set in stone. * Four purchases that initially felt like splurges, but ended up giving me joy (and saving me some money!)

If you want to achieve financial success, building solid money habits is a non-negotiable. Intellectually, almost everyone knows and agrees with that statement. But, how do you choose which habits to build? That’s the million-dollar question. In this week’s episode, I’ll share with you the four money habits that can have the biggest impact on your money confidence journey. Every self-help book or personal development coach seems to agree on one thing: if you are trying to transform one area of your life, the first thing you gotta do is build good habits. But, what is exactly a good habit? And who decides which ones fall into this category? That is the quintessential question.

When it comes to improving your finances, habits such as saving consistently and spending less will almost always pop up in any finance-related conversation. However, how can you know if building these will help you move the needle of your plan forward? Because let’s be honest: there

is such a thing as picking the wrong habit (#gasp). And since building these behavioral patterns is not that easy (plot twist: gaining real momentum usually takes more than 21 days), you want to be sure the time and energy you’ll be investing in acquiring a new habit will eventually pay off.

In this episode, I’ll share with you some insights on the importance of picking (and building!) money habits that bring in a genuine bang.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Why so many financial habits are not worth your energy and time and what you can do instead. * Two habits that seem crucial to have, but actually can be automated. * Four key money habits that will bring you more bang for your time.

Did you know that, despite the challenges of the current housing market, most Americans still consider homeownership an essential part of the American Dream? And yet sometimes a quick run of your numbers can reveal that owning property may not be as financially advantageous as you initially thought. In this episode, we’ll talk about the real cost of owning a home. According to a survey conducted by the online platform Lending Tree in July 2023, 94% of respondents still see homeownership as an essential part of the American Dream. However, as the days and months pass by, the realities of the current housing market, with its ever-changing ups and downs, have created a sense of hopelessness in so many people, particularly the younger crowd: no matter what they do, it’s unlikely they will ever be able to afford a house.

But, what if this sense of hopelessness was simply a by-product of believing that owning a house is better than renting because it’s cheaper? What if this belief were simply not true? While no one can deny that owning the house you live in can be a rewarding, and even fulfilling experience, the numbers don’t lie: there are so many scenarios where owning property can cost you more (way, way more, in fact) than renting out.

In this episode, I’ll share with you my story (and insights) on things you have to consider before buying a home and the importance of running your numbers before committing to homeownership.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Some of the things to consider when buying a home * The numbers you need to compare for calculating the true cost of owning vs renting a home * Why my family is choosing not to buy a home and what we are doing instead.

If someone approached you at a family party and asked you to share your biggest money mistake, what would you say? To be completely honest, I’d probably freeze on the spot. Not because I don’t know how to answer, but because a voice in my head tells me that, as a financial counselor, I should know better. Well, that’s not exactly true. And in this week’s episode, I’m going to walk you through the details of my biggest money mistake ever: buying a timeshare. If you’ve ever vacationed in a resort, you’ve probably heard about timeshares. The concept is very straightforward: in exchange for a fee, you “purchase” the right to use a resort room for one week of a given year. The “advantage” of this system is that your contract allows you to enjoy the resort room at the same fixed price, which over time amounts to considerable savings on vacation costs.

While on paper the idea sounds interesting enough, in my case reality didn’t really live up to the expectations. And yet, acknowledging this in real-time was almost impossible –a fact that made the whole experience very painful.

Today I’m sharing this experience hoping that it can inspire you to better understand why sometimes is hard to see big money mistakes coming.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* The reason why investing in this didn’t feel like a mistake (at first). * Some annoying realizations that added up to the pain of this experience. * How we managed to get rid of it and why it was the best decision.

When it comes to money talk, do you know what your family is expecting from you? While there’s nothing wrong with freely offering financial help to your loved ones when things get tough, doing so at the expense of your financial well-being is a recipe for future problems. So, how do you navigate financial expectations with your family? How do you get ready to have these potentially triggering conversations? This is exactly what Gigi González, author of the bestselling book, Cultura and Cash, will be talking about in today’s episode.Have you ever been in a situation where a loved one expects you to contribute financially to something just because you have a close relationship? It can either be an emergency expense (think sudden hospital bills or the cost of a specific medication) or a common, everyday expense (the cost of a meal, gas, or even a plane ticket).

If you have, you know there’s nothing more complicated than navigating such a scenario because, let’s face it, it seems there’s no real way to win. You either say no and get a disappointed (and potentially shocked) response, or you say yes and end up resenting the person who asked. Either way, someone will always end up upset.

So, here comes the million-dollar question: is there a way around this? Is there a way to navigate these tricky conversations without ending up feeling the full spectrum of negative emotions?

These are some questions that our (returning!) guest for this week’s episode, Giovanna “Gigi” González will be speaking about.

Gigi is a TikTok influencer, financial educator, and author of Cultura and Cash. During The Great Resignation, she quit her 10-year corporate career to pursue her true passion: teaching financial literacy to young adults. She teaches personal finance and career navigation for First Gen at various organizations and on her TikTok account @thefirstgenmentor.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* Insights on what it means to be a bicultural first-gen Latina (and why it matters). * A walkthrough of Gigi’s First Gen Five Framework. * A simple two-step framework for setting up money boundaries as a first-gen Latina.

Have you been searching and searching for personal finance books by Latino authors or Latina authors, but it feels like you are searching for a needle in a haystack? You are not alone which is why we have done the hard work for you and have compiled the best finance books by Latinx authors for you!

Before we share these books with you, let’s provide some background as to the lack of representation in the personal finance area.

The interest in personal finance has drastically increased over the years, and the bookshelves are overflowing with new titles. However, it’s hard not to notice the glaring lack of Latinx authors in this sea of finance wisdom (this finance wisdom= 500 books published annually). As the Latino community in the U.S. booms (I mean, over 111 million that’s 28% by 2060?!), it’s high time we hear their unique financial stories and address their specific needs.

Quick stats: Latinx authors make up only 7.6% of ALL authors – que locura (that is crazy)! This creates a gap in role models for financial success in our community. We need to address unique issues like cultural influences, language barriers, and challenges faced by immigrant families. Without enough relevant role models, nuestra comunidad might struggle to find financial freedom that caters to our distinct experiences. We seriously need Latino voices in the financial conversation, no te parece (don’t you think)?

Speaking of Latino voices, without further ado we present to you the compiled list of best finance books by Latinx authors (as well as some upcoming books to look out for). Of course, if you have others that we missed be sure to let us know in the comments section!

There was no data found that showed the number of personal finance books published for all the years we needed so instead we used the range of 400-600+ based on the research and the data Statista published in 2014. *Our team searched high and low for personal finance books written by Latinos and they were definitely scarce (and we may have missed some). The less than .01% number was calculated by the number of personal finance books we found written by Latino authors divided by the average of total personal finance books published annually (we used 500 to be conservative). How important do you think building credit is in achieving your goals? How much of an impact do you think learning from other people’s experiences will have on your goals? Do you believe becoming a professional requires getting into debt because of the additional education? Grab your popcorn and listen to this episode where our guest shares her experiences with all of this (and yes there is a reason why I’m saying you should grab your popcorn).Unfortunately, many of us became aware of the importance of good credit as adults, don’t get me wrong — it’s never too late! We also have beliefs that simply aren’t true, like debt is unavoidable when pursuing a profession needing higher education.

Jeniree Flores’s story shows that it is possible to alter negative beliefs, become successful without taking on debt, and stick to habits that will help establish credit, among other things.

Dr. Flores is a polymer chemist, author of a patent and of more than half a dozen peer-review publications. She became a podcaster with the launch of Latinx Can, a podcast highlighting the stories of Latinx professionals and the tips and tricks that helped them turn their dreams into reality.

What you’ll learn about in today’s episode:* The importance of having an emergency fund * Tips on how to build good credit * How you can benefit from scholarships for graduate studies

We can all agree that navigating the U.S. financial system as an immigrant is not easy. This can be due to two main reasons: because it is a completely different system from our origin countries and the lack of accessible resources in our native language. Fortunately for us and our community, there are people like Carolina Weber and Natalia Duarte who are working together to change this and helping our community navigate the financial system. In this episode, Natalia and Carolina share their money journey and also tell us about “Dyneri”, a useful platform for Latinos to become more financially literate in a way they can relate to.

Natalia Duarte was born in Colombia and holds a BA from Harvard College and MBA from Wharton. She currently manages strategy and operations for New Verticals at DoorDash and is building Dyneri alongside Carolina.

Carolina Weber is a first-generation Mexican American. She graduated from Harvard College and most recently, The Wharton School where she got her MBA. She is working in big tech as a Product Strategist and concurrently is co-building Dyneri with co-founder Natalia.

*You will also hear the following in today’s episode:** The two things that need to change when it comes to the student loan debt crisis. * What “Dyneri” is and what inspired the name * How we can change what we can control despite the challenges of the financial system.
