A sunrise wedding in Banff, Rae & Jake

Shooting this Banff Wedding at Lake Moraine during Sunrise was a dream. Lake Moraine, in Banff National Park, is such a popular place to visit and photograph. The huge blue lake and mountain views are stunning. What a magical place for a sunrise elopement!
Rae and Jake flew in from Seattle WA and spent the weekend with some of their closest friends in a cute cabin in the mountains near Banff. I joined them the night before, and together we drove to Moraine Lake the next morning. We got there way before sunrise to make it there in time for morning light — when the mountains would start to show behind the clouds. Rae had always dreamed of eloping at Moraine Lake because of the stunning blue lake, that is surrounded by mountains.
Their ceremony… When we got there, it was still pretty cloudy and foggy and you could hardly see the mountains! We were all so sad and anxious, hoping some of the fog would roll away and the view would clear up a bit. We waited in our warm vehicles for a while and soon started seeing mountains pop from behind the fog.
Then we walked up the trails and were all breath taken by the beautiful views. Rae and Jake exchanged their private vows in the presence of lots of mist, mountains, a huge blue lake (Moraine Lake is SO blue), and dear friends who had flown all the way to Banff to be there with them on this special day. And it was beautiful. They ended their day by grabbing brunch together in Banff city and then went bowling together afterward!
Thank you Rae + Jake for letting me be a part of your story and this sweet day of yours. So so happy for you guys! Lake Moraine looked good on you two. Of course, it was an absolute honor to shoot such a beautiful Elopement during Sunrise at Lake Moraine. The perfect spot for a Banff wedding.

Kananaskis Wedding – Danny & Ryan
Documented by Havilah Heger
Danny + Ryan had a Kananaskis wedding and it was absolutely beautiful. They tied the knot in front of a beautiful lake and had the Elopement ceremony at Upper Kananaskis Lake here in Alberta (close to Banff National Park). It was a rainy day with 30 of their nearest and dearest people there to celebrate with them. Their ceremony was relaxed and in the mountains, and then they had an evening celebrating with ALL their friends and family (reception style) in Calgary.
I love that they chose a way to celebrate their new marriage in a way that felt perfect for them. They started their elopement day by getting ready at home and then drove to the mountains in a big bus with all their favorite people. Danny slipped into her dress once we got to Upper Kananaskis Lake, and everyone else started walking down to the ceremony spot! They began the ceremony with Danny hiding around the corner behind some trees as Ryan waited for her at the ceremony spot with the majestic lake + mountains as their backdrop. Danny walked down the path with her dad by her side and joined everyone by the lake. They exchanged vows with Danny’s brother officiating the ceremony, shared their first kiss as husband and wife, and walked down the aisle as everyone threw confetti their way to celebrate!
After the ceremony… After the ceremony, once everyone was done hugging and congratulating them, we took all the family + group photos. Then I headed into the forest area to capture portraits of just Danny and Ryan. AHHHH. This part was SO much fun. Shooting with these two was just the best because they were so in love. After we shot in the forest area, we headed back down to the Lake (where they had their ceremony). And it started raining like crazy! It was pouring and we realized there was no way we were gonna get “dry photos”. So…. Danny and Ryan decided to embrace the rain and we took the most magical photos of them. I was under an umbrella trying to keep my two cameras as dry as I could lol.
Danny & Ryan were COMPLETELY drenched by the end of our shoot and so so in love. I made sure they stopped focusing on what they looked like (cause I got that part under control) or even the fact that they were being photographed, and started focusing on each other and their love and admiration for the other person. It was beautiful.

We did an elopement-style ceremony with our immediate family and friends and wanted someone who would capture the intimacy of the day. Havi truly exceeded our expectations! She made us so comfortable and was able to capture who we are in the photos. The process felt relaxed and natural and it shows in Havi’s work. She made it feel like we were hanging out with a friend and that we could just be ourselves. We both don’t love having our picture taken, but we both agreed that the time we spent in the woods and in the rain with Havi was one of the highlights of our day. She was so accommodating and up for exploring the area to find beautiful places to shoot. We are absolutely in love with our photos and have received so many compliments on them. We cannot recommend Havilah enough! She is amazing and you will be so happy you booked with her.”

Kananaskis elopement photographer – the Canadian rockies Katelyn is a Photographer herself and shooting this elopement-styled shoot with them in Kananaskis was so much fun. Barrier Lake was absolutely gorgeous during sunset! It was so windy and dreamy and we shot until it got really dark. I absolutely love shooting during blue hour, as the sun starts to hide behind the mountains and the sky changes color. It’s so so beautiful.
Kananaskis is dead gorgeous. It sorta feels like a hidden gem when it comes to the mountains in Alberta. People seem to visit Canmore + Banff National Park when they’re in the area, whereas Kananaskis is a little less touristy. It’s a lot less crowded, has beautiful scenery and some great hikes if you’re into hiking! I’m super excited to explore more areas in Kananaskis with my couples for their photoshoots. If you’ve been wanting to plan an eloping/wedding/any kids of photos in the Kananaskis area, do it. You won’t regret shooting there.
This styled shoot at Barrier Lake was so dreamy + beautiful and I loved how happy these two were the whole afternoon/evening.
