Claremont is exemplary in its charitable efforts. Claremont's chapter of the Children's Foundation of America is among the most enduring and effective of our charity organizations. In this informative and uplifting interview, CFA's Volunteer Coordinator, Christina Garcia, highlights some of their many community-based programs that help children in need so that they may lead healthy, productive lives.
Many events that residents and visitors attend each year are put on by Claremont's CFA, with the invaluable help of Christina's many dedicated volunteers. The events are all aimed at filling the gap between the children's true needs and what public funding is able to provide. In this episode, Christina describes how these events - the Toy Drive, The Beer and Wine Walks, Holiday Heroes gift drives and the popular CFA Charity Golf Classic, as examples - have become anticipated, well-attended annual traditions enjoyed by Claremont residents and visitors while providing opportunities to measurably improve children's lives. Everyone in Claremont is affected by the growing homelessness population in one way or another. At a recent Claremont meeting with representatives from Claremont PD and the City Staff, one key question was "What can be done - right now?" to solve the homeless problem in the Village business district. Anne Miskey, President and CEO of Union Station Homeless Services and a nationally recognized expert on ending homelessness, took a turn at the microphone to help answer this and other important, related questions. Spend an hour with Anne to understand how the right temporary and permanent housing programs really can work; truly be the catalyst to changing the lives of the unhoused and improve the quality of the community as a whole. As objective proof that these programs perform so well, she invites those who would like a tour of other successful programs, or just to ask questions, to contact her directly. The US, and Claremont specifically, has experienced an increase in reported instances of antisemitic and other hate crimes recently. Most Claremont residents condemn such actions, but there are still those who cling to the mistaken and irrational beliefs that have been around for thousands of years. The Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, led by their Executive Director, Jason Moss, firmly believe that antisemitism and all forms of hate and "othering", can be overcome.
Jason and his dedicated staff are taking a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to stopping antisemitism and defending, supporting and improving the lives of the Jewish communities in our area, The Jewish Federation's efforts are paying off, however he cautions that success will be found in playing "the long game" - tenacious and consistent efforts over time -if they are truly to educate and change the hearts and minds of those who don't understand that everyone is more similar than different.
In this candid and forthright interview, Jason details the many creative and effective ways their dedicated staff pursues in helping their members live the best Jewish life they can and combat antisemitism (and all forms of "othering" hate) where it arises. They seek to build relationships, educate and and work towards forming a coalition of groups to counter those who commit the damaging and atrocious acts that make the news all to often lately, and invite listeners to join their fight on whatever level they can.

Dr. Evagellos Vallianatos, one of Claremont's many authors and resident authority on broad spectrum of topics, including zoology and the history of science, has worked on Capitol Hill and at the US Environmental Protection Agency for almost three decades. Dr, Vallianatos took a break from his research and writing to give Claremont Speaks some insight into how the EPA started and what the early days were like, and the corruption and duplicitous research that has happened since, including how President Biden might best make the most on his pledge to rebuild and restore the EPA to being honest, transparent and effective - in short, fulfilling its original purpose.

In the ongoing evolution of the housing project slated for the site of the former La Puerta school, many aspects have changed, some several times. Eric Nelson, Vice President of Community Development at Trumark Homes, has been collaborating with Claremont's schools, city staff, residents and other stakeholders for over three years, aiming to get a project most everyone will like and approve to construct. Eric was previously a guest on Claremont Speaks (April of 2021, Click here to listen)Eric has returned to Claremont Speaks to provide updates on the project's evolution, clarify the current status (May, 2023) and de-bunk some of the misinformation surrounding the project. He then provides a look at the different directions the project may take in the future, given Trumark's stated intent to file a supplemental building application under a provision of Senate Bill 330, which guarantees expedited approval if the developer sets aside 20% of the new units for low income buyers. Although Mr. Nelson describes this as a "bookmark", he elaborates on why it is not Trumark's preferred option.

Sometimes the catalyst that drives an epiphany is almost accidental, yet can bring out the very best in people, and puts them on the course to what they are sure is their true purpose. For Dr. Wen Chen, her awakening happened after a conversation with one of her colleagues regarding the events of Tiananmen Square, in 1989. Until that conversation, she believed the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) line; that nothing much had happened, and the students and people were the ones who attacked the soldiers. After seeing the videos, she realized all she had been told had been a lie, investigated further and discovered the limitless deceit and corruption of the CCP.
She simply could not do nothing. After learning the truth - experiencing a kind of "awakening" - Dr. Chen is now actively educating people about the real conditions and practices in today's China. Claremont Speaks was fortunate to have Dr. Chen tell her story to this point, then discuss the state of the situation in China today and the CCP's goals for the future. Anyone who believes communism is, somehow, the better system, owes it to themselves to listen to Dr. Chen's recounting of the unbridled evil - murder for profit - which is conducted daily by the CCP. Conservative estimates are that upward of 80 million lives have been taken by harvesting organs, which are then provided to the CCP's elite or sold to wealthy transplant patients in China, the US and around the world.

There is a direct relationship between the value of living in Claremont and the quality of Claremont's schools. In an effort to maintain and strengthen that link, Alex McDonald MD is running for Claremont Unified School District (CUSD) in the Special Election for Trustee, District 4 to be held on July 25, 2023. Alex was able to take a short break from his busy schedule as a CUSD parent and his practice as a family and sports medicine specialist to answer some of the most pressing questions about his perspectives, plans and strategies should he be elected.
In this very personal and forthright interview, Alex reveals that he, by personal experience, knows what it is like to be a patient with critical needs and a student with special educational requirements. As a physician, more than most, he sees the direct and collateral results and benefits of a good education , as well as the disadvantages and damage that poor education can cause. As a result, as CUSD's D4 Trustee, he can focus on solving the many crucial issues facing the students, faculty, administration and board. Alex openly and honestly takes on a variety of very direct questions about the toughest current topics, such as critical race theory, gender identification, gun control and shooter/lock-down drills, childhood obesity and diabetes due to today's diet and exercise habits, drugs in the schools, and the immediate, if not crisis-level need for increasing the physical, emotional and mental health of our students.
As a physician who has made a career of healing others, he believes that his education, experience and his many successes bring an extra layer of unique qualifications that he can apply directly to improving the quality and effectiveness of the education which CUSD students receive. For anyone who has or, actually is, a student in the CUSD system, and especially if you are in District 4, this interview should be considered required listening before meeting him at a public meeting or Candidate Forum, and certainly before casting your vote.

Political activist/Grass Roots advocate Mike Netter joins Claremont Speaks to discuss key topics, including the recall efforts of Governor Gavin Newsom and District Attorney George Gascón. Energetic, informed and interesting, his passion is to create a better political landscape for California and the "ordinary" people in it. Mike is one of the driving forces behind the recent recall efforts of Gavin Newsome and George Gascon. Mike, along with others, decided to launch a recall of Gavin Newsom when they noticed California was going downhill.

Three members of the activist group Claremont Streets for People - Ross Pringle, Buff Brown, and Nic Lucio - took the opportunity to introduce themselves and the Streets for People group, then explain their strategy to reach their goal of making the city and its streets safer and more enjoyable. As strong advocates for bike and pedestrian safety, they put forth how residents have a proven pent-up demand for cycling in Claremont, and that safer streets would help achieve that, along with a multitude of collateral upsides, including the benefits of exercise, lowering congestion, reducing transportation and living costs, and increasing the amount of economic activity in the city.
As long-time cyclists and Claremont residents, they are stakeholders - as are most residents and visitors to the city - in increasing bike ridership, much as has been done in Culver City, for example, The progress and improvements are directly attributable to many factors, including smart, focused leadership and bike-conscious street and thoroughfare engineering. Streets for People hopes to help change Claremont by breaking California's long-time focus on moving cars at the expense of cyclists and pedestrians.
The group invites everyone to join them, in any capacity, to help elevate Claremont to becoming and inspiration and aspirational standard in this regard. There is conclusive and convincing evidence that this can be done, and is well worth the efforts. Nutritious, healthy plants surround us--in our neighborhoods, where we work, and where we call home. For Claremont's Earth Day Celebration on April 23, expert forager Douglas Kent is leading a foraging tour of Claremont, hosted by Sustainable Claremont as part of its continuing effort to make Claremont a more sustainable community.
Doug started eating weeds in 1979 and has never looked back. Since 2008, he has been teaching the techniques of foraging and wildcrafting at Cal Poly Pomona. In this episode - somewhat of a preview to the workshop - Doug highlights several plants - weeds to some - that grow just about everywhere, and are seldom recognized as the healthy foods they really are. Plants people walk past every day, and usually try to destroy or prevent, are actually better for eating than much of what is found in the produce section of your grocery store. In Doug's workshop/tour, he will showcase ways to protect yourself, the most common foraged foods, and delicious treats that are often missed in the San Gabriel Valley.
Along with six other books, he is the author of “Foraging Southern California: 118 Nutritious, Tasty Edibles to Harvest in Bulk,” Doug is one of the nation's leading authorities on this topic, and received both his masters degrees from Cal Poly Pomona; one in Regenerative Studies and the other in Landscape Architecture. He is the principal of Douglas Kent & Associates in Orange, and is an adjunct professor at the John Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona.

Assembly Bill 1482 (“TENANT PROTECTION ACT OF 2019″) and Claremont's proposed ordinances, which could further enhance the level of tenant protection provided, have presented Claremont's City Council with some unique opportunities and some difficult decisions. Katie Wand, the city's Assistant to the City Manager, is one of the key researchers on this topic and chief organizer of Claremont's public outreach efforts on this matter. Katie and the City's staff have made every effort to reach out to those most affected by these ordinances, all to support fact-based, fair and reasonable recommendations to the council. Katie was able to bring the benefit of her exhaustive efforts to Claremont Speaks to break down and explain the many issues and collateral effects surrounding the ordinances, should they be enacted in the last council meeting of April 2023.
Landlords, tenants and, really, any residents who are directly or indirectly affected by these ordinances owes it to themselves to listen to Katie's unbiased and straightforward discussion of the bill, ordinances and their many possible affects to all involved. The issues that come before the City Council in Claremont are often complex, nuanced with underlying rules, considerations and trade-offs of which most citizens are unaware. Whether to keep Claremont's parklets is no exception.
Katie Wand, Claremont Staff's Assistant to the City Manager, offers up the results of her research, highlighting the many facets involved in whether Claremont keeps their Parklets - the outdoor dining areas permitted and built as a measure to allow restaurants to continue operation during the COVID pandemic.
Many of the patrons of Claremont's Village have come to like the outdoor dining experience they provide, but not everyone is looking to keep the parklets in perpetuity. Now that regulations regarding emergency measures due to COVID are sunsetting, the decision to keep, remove or construct a compromise regarding the parklets comes before the City Council.
Ms. Wand does an expert and detailed deep-dive into the subject, revealing the many considerations, rules and regulations which will affect the parklets ongoing presence, versus returning to pre-pandemic form.

After a COVID-related hiatus, the festival is returning , better than ever. Dr. Deepak Shimkhada, PhD, returns to Claremont Speaks to provide some insight into four new books he has either written or been a chief collaborator. As way of recording the highlights of his nearly eight decades of extraordinary experiences, Dr. Shimkhada chronicles many of his best memories in Nepal to California: A Life of Adventure and Memories. He recounts growing up in a small village near Mt. Everest, his transition to Kathmandu, Chicago and then Los Angeles, Dr. Shimkhada takes the reader on a ride of discovery and adventure that few are privileged to experience.
Dr. Shimkhada recently completed one of his long-term projects, the translation to English of Sylvain Lévi's monumental work Le Népal: Étude Historique d’un Royaume Hindou, published in French in the early 1900s. Published as Nepal: Historical Study of a Hindu Kingdom from the original French manuscript, it has stood the test of time as the standard for scholarly work on Nepal.
In addition to his own children's books, Deepak has assisted and guided his young family members in writing their first books.
The Boy from the Planet Zobur, by Sanjan Mahalingam, is a vivid and captivating cautionary tale about the consequences of mis-treating the environment.

The Antikythera Mechanism, an astronomical computer probably crafted in Rhodes in the second century BCE, is regarded as being the first precision, gear driven calculator and the forerunner of modern computers. Kathryn Mora - a popular writer for The Claremont Courier and one of the most favored by Claremont Speaks' listeners - returns to the microphone to relate a story about a recent outpatient visit in which the staff illustrated some of the all-too-common treatment of those who, as Kathryn delicately puts it, "have had a lot of birthdays." One warm evening, during the summer concert series, when most everyone else was not so interested, Claremont resident and experienced competitive cyclist Miguel Farer was kind enough to take the microphone and talk with Claremont Speaks' undaunted roving interviewer. As a very nice surprise, Miguel spoke about his long and interesting career as a top-rated cyclist - competing with Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMonde. He highlighted some of his experiences, interactions with the GoaTs, and talked about the incredible bikes he's ridden - all while relaxing and enjoying a root beer float out in front of Bert & Rocky's ice cream emporium.
MIguel's short interview - edited for sound quality improvement and filler-word reduction, but little else - is effortlessly entertaining, giving a little peek into a sport and a culture not everyone sees from the inside, as Miguel had done for decades. Miguel's discussion spotlights a career of cycling most only aspire to, and hints that in Claremont, you never really know who you might be sitting next to on a street corner bench.

During the year, the hardworking staff at Claremont Speaks sometimes ventures into the wilds of Claremont, armed only with a field recorder and a couple of microphones, in hopes of speaking to everyday people about everyday stuff.

Claremont-ers lovetheir dogs; they go everywhere with them, and during a trip through the village, not seeing one being walked would be odd. Claremont is rich in many resources, not the least of which are the smart, active and involved residents. One of the most prominent is Evaggelos Vallianatos, Ph.D , an ecopolitical theorist and environmental strategist, historian and outspoken activist in the fight against global warming. He describes this struggle as a matter of life-and-death for us all. In the first of what is planned to be a series of forthright and pointed interviews, Dr. Vallianatos posits that Claremont could, should - must - be a leader in this fight, and how Claremont could lead by example. Claremont's leadership in this regard - if the city leaders, businesses and residents so choose to accept the challenge - would benefit Claremont environmentally, financially, and by increasing the value of living in the city, all while making valuable and effective local contributions against global warming. One may not be able to change the world, but the measures to change things locally are well within reach.

During a vocal civil demonstration in late September, a group of Iranian-American women sought to raise awareness of the fate of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year old Iranian woman that was beaten into a coma, and later death, by the Iranian government's "Morality Police." The ironically named enforcement group took exception to how Amini was wearing a head scarf...with tragic results.
Mandana Mojaverian, a Claremont resident, student and activist, took a few minutes out to talk to Claremont Speaks and explain what exactly happened, how things really are in Iran, what should be done about it, where NOT to find the truth and who should - and should not - get involved. She also recounts her journey to Claremont and some of the unexpected cultural differences she encountered along the way.
Mandana's group's protest in September, along with many, many across the US and the world, recently appear to have been quite effective. The Wall Street Journal reported on December 4, 2022, that Iran’s Attorney General, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, stated that Iran had "disbanded its so-called morality police and is considering altering the requirement that women cover their heads in public." Mandana cautioned against too readily accepting that said by US news sources, but this seems to be generally corroborated by other sources.
To Mandana and all those who voiced their opposition to Iran's actions, this shows that the combination of free speech - and the willingness to "say something" - can contribute to real change.

As a final cap to the day, a small group of local professors were kind enough to take a few minutes to get acquainted and provide their insight and impressions of the race, the value of a dog as a co-runner, and being in the Turkey Trot every year since the beginning. These learned folks touched on what they thought was the real value of higher education and considered creating a special classification for the participating population that have a "canine co-racer" - for that special class of runners that take their dog(s) everywhere...as well they should.

Claremont is a destination for many who seek to appreciate a variety of art forms, and among the most valued are independent films. Movie theaters were severely impacted by the pandemic, most vulnerable among them has been independent films.
Vince Turner, however, is working to revive the movie-going experience by providing unique and interesting short-form, independent films in his weekly Claremont Film Festival. Showing first-rate, curated films selected from hundreds each week, Vince provides Claremont a movie experience in keeping with and befitting the city's tacit theme "Claremont, for what you just won't find anywhere else." Among the recent and upcoming selections are films about the cultural hurdles encountered when a Chinese auto parts company opens a factory in Ohio, sending a rocket/space probe to retrieve samples from an asteroid, and a documentary on the conflict in Ukraine in 2014 - the predecessor of the situation today.
Vince offers his broad and ambitious perspectives on the social importance of the in-theater movie experience - postulating that one crafted "from Claremont, by Claremont, for Claremont...might be able to sustain itself simply because it would have the community effect." This and other insights, coupled with his anecdotes on starting the film festival and what it takes to produce it each week, make this episode one for all of Claremont. Anil, Kunjin and 3 yr-old Cairo, were cooling off after the 5K, and were amenable to talking briefly bout their first-ever Turkey trot. They discuss their livelihood, Claremont, the race and how pushing a 3-year old in a stroller the whole way should get some points for "degree of difficulty." Perspiration or not, Anil, Kunjin and his family intend to make the Turkey Trot an annual family tradition; one of the Sunrise Rotary Club's main objectives.

In the crisp Thanksgiving morning of 2022, Claremont Speaks went to the Sunrise Rotary Club's Annual Turkey Trot, seeking to talk to those involved with the event. Among the many, many traditional and iconic events in Claremont each year, The Claremont Sunrise Rotary Club's Annual Turkey Trot is consistently one of the most anticipated, fun and well-attended. Gabe Millar, a prominent Sunrise Rotary member and one of the folks you always see at just about every function in Claremont, was able to join Claremont Speaks to share the details of the 15th annual Claremont Sunrise Rotary Turkey Trot.
Besides being a fun event, Gabe recounts the benefits to the Claremont Community and the help that the national and international Rotary group provides to people truly in need; such as shelter in hurricane devastate areas and food and supplies to people in war-ravaged areas including Ukraine. The sense of community combined with knowing that the entry fee is going to make Claremont and elsewhere measurably better is part of why Claremont looks forward to "The Trot" each year. No longer constrained by the pandemic, this year's hybrid event allows runners to choose between the traditional in-person race on Thanksgiving morning or a virtual race on a course of their choosing. In the middle of the current race for the Claremont Unified School District's Board Seat for Area 4, experienced classroom educator and sixteen year CUSD School Board veteran Steven Llanusa took some time to respond to today's tough, complicated questions facing the Board, the staff and the students.
Given the importance of the issues at hand, Steven Llanusa took Claremont Speaks' challenge to eclipse the level of the popular group forums, Steven embraced the opportunity and took full advantage of this open and completely unrestricted platform to provide direct, cogent answers - straight from his decades of experience and his heart - on topics that parents, students, faculty and staff...and most of Claremont...would surely place at the pinnacle of importance. The value of his experience, empathy and abilities is evident as he discusses school funding, critical race theory being taught (or not) in the schools, banning of books in the library vs. required reading, the value and harm of different levels of active shooter drills, mental health programs for the students and the impact/value of the School Resource Officers on the students as a few examples.

In the November 2022 election, to Claremont and La Verne, the contest for Director, Division III, of the Three Valleys Municipal Water District may be one of the most important. Seeking to take the area into the future is Javier Aguilar, an experienced and highly educated Senior Regional Planner with the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Javi has analyzed the data surrounding our current water situation - declining supply and prices rising faster than incomes - and believes, for the future, there are changes that can and need to be made. In this very candid interview, Javi - self-described as non-political and practical - outlines his vision for innovation and taking new directions will provide the needed solutions to our dilemma. He brings to light remedies at the local and regional levels, looking at breaking away from the practices of the past and treating the water that we have like the valuable resource it inarguably is.

The Newcomers Access Center is a non-profit dedicated to assisting those who choose Claremont when coming to America, often from distressed areas of the globe. NAC continues to work tirelessly to improve the lives of the recent immigrants and help them get started properly in their new home. Anne Thorward, President of the Newcomers Access Center and one of the keys to their remarkable success, was able to join Claremont Speaks to share some NAC updates and news, and to introduce two of the many new folks the NAC is assisting in their journey to secure a better home and life here in Claremont.
Anne introduces Nabila, who left Afghanistan last August with her family; and Hannah, who was able to leave Ukraine just days ago with her two daughters. Each spends a few minutes to get acquainted, relate their experiences in coming here and their first impressions of Claremont. Claremont's Wendy Ramallo thought she had found "it" several times over - California's sun, law school, working at Los Angeles high-profile law firms, Washington DC, the Robert Kennedy Memorial, working with Father Greg Boyle (founder of Home Boy Industries) among other key positions. These all had both financial and spiritual rewards. However, she knew there was something...more. Her innate passion for doing something for someone else, combined with her skills as a lawyer and experience working on gun violence issues was catalyzed by the Uvalde, Texas shooting incident. She almost involuntarily reached out to Moms Demand Action to assist, knowing she had to do...something. So she founded the Pomona Valley Chapter as a way of exponentially increasing the local difference she could make.

She recounts the life-journey that brought her to Claremont and then become the spark and driving force...or local coordinator...of the PVMDA's effort to reduce gun violence. Clayton Becker has accomplished more than most in the 8 years since graduating from Claremont High School, but to some, locally, he may be best known for his thoughtful, strong and data-backed responses and letters in the Claremont Courier. Recently, a column by Pomona College Professor Stephen Marks regarding water conservation prompted Clayton to submit his own insightful, circumspect and somewhat pointed response.
Reading this, Claremont Speaks immediately invited Clayton to expand on his points to thoroughly explain and clarify his points, and really give Claremont, analogously, the rest of the story. Clayton provided his own fresh insights into Claremont's Housing/Water considerations, including recommendations for actions everyone can take, right now and in the future, to keep the water situation all of Southern California faces from unfavorably altering our city. Clayton delivers an educated, informative and yet entertaining interview - a "must-listen" for anyone living/owning in Claremont - now and for the foreseeable future, and is concerned with whether the limited water supply will affect the housing that's here now and yet to be built.
Clayton Becker graduated from Claremont High School in 2016 and went straight to Columbia University in NYC, where he earned his Bachelor's Degrees in Economics and Political Science in Columbia's Dual BA program, both in NYC and France, Graduating Magna Cum Laude. He is now pursuing his PhD in Political Science at UCLA. For this podcast, however, Clayton can truly be considered "a student of Claremont." He grew up here and attended CUSD schools, met his fiancé here, and still calls Claremont home even while living in LA. At Columbia, his papers focused on and/or used Claremont as the study subject, focusing on the effects of districting and other topics. The Concerts in the Park are a summer staple in Claremont, and The Happy Crowd has been one of the most beloved groups for over three decades. On August 11, 2022, The Happy Crowd - Hai, Smarty Marty, Collie and Kenny - graced the Memorial Park Bandshell for their final show, but were able to take a few minutes to talk to Claremont Speaks before commanding the stage and delighting the crowd...as always.
The Happy Crowd spoke on how they started, and what a great ride it's been ever since. Most appreciative of Claremont - which they regard as "home" - they've loved all the enthusiasm they've received over all the years, from their first show to the last - both in the Memorial Park Bandshell. People who saw The Happy Crowd when they were young brought their kids and grandkids for the privilege of seeing their final show.
The fans had their Happy Socks on and eagerly let the Happy Crowd whisk them away. Fans of all ages were singing along, dancing and spinning...enjoying their signature music, humor and overall upbeat and positive entertainment to the max. In the first of three interviews focusing on whether the objectives for more - and more affordable - housing in Claremont are a good idea, or even possible, in the face of the drought SoCal is now experiencing. In the first of thee interviews on this topic, LIam Dillon, a star staff writer for the Los Angeles Times and (fellow) podcaster on this topic, shares the results of his investigative research into whether Southern California can continue to build more homes without a matching increase in the available water. Liam's passion is trying to uncover and solve the big problems that affect daily life in neighborhoods, and adequate water supply being intuitively in opposition to building new homes is key among those problems.
Water supply has become one of the chief points of opposition to the construction of new homes in Claremont (and elsewhere). Liam expands on his LA Times article "Does California have enough water for lots of new homes? Yes, experts say, despite drought" where he takes the position that SoCal can add homes and residents without overtaxing the water supply. Liam explores the societal trade-offs, the measures everyone can take to help SoCal use water more efficiently and effectively, and the new technology available to cut wasteful consumption - saving residents money in the bargain.
For those concerned about new home construction - at every level - impacting available the available water supply to people at all levels, this series of interviews could not be more germane. During a recent City Council meeting's Public Comment, Megan Mbengue was a standout participant, and conveyed a concise and cogent argument regarding the decision to tax cannabis deliveries, sales and more in Claremont, and whether it really helps/ benefits those that truly need cannabis products for medicinal purposes.
Megan’s four minutes were so unusually well delivered, fact filled and straight to the point, Claremont Speaks instantly invited Megan Mbengue, RN and Trusted Cannanurse, to speak on an episode of her own - a chance to expand on the four minutes allowed in Public Comment. Megan immediately took the opportunity - we recorded in the cool of the morning in Memorial Park a few days later - and proceeded to inform and educate like few others. She knows her subject matter, bringing forward a wealth of surprising history and little-known facts and figures. She adeptly explains complex germane organic chemistry and biochemical concepts in a way that the lay person can understand, yet provides a refreshing level of humor to what might otherwise be a somewhat dry topic, making it relatable and clear.
Key amongst the topics Megan discusses is her opposition to the City of Claremont's proposal to place an additional tax on cannabis grown and sold in Claremont. On a medicine much needed by many and already heavily taxed (As of Jan. 1, cannabis is taxed at a flat rate of about $161 a pound, on top of a 15 percent excise tax), Claremont is considering adding several percent more, making it even less available through safe, tested and legal means for those who truly need it as a medicine - and further encouraging the illicit market.
In addition to being a Claremont resident for the last five years, Megan is a top rated hospice nurse, a cannabis nurse, a grad school student and an active cannabis advocate. As the afternoon cooled off and the Ravelers' music kept getting hotter and keeping the crowd energized, my luck held with three more random and extemporaneous conversations that turned out, as you'll hear, to have a common theme; how much people like and appreciate Claremont and thoroughly enjoyed the day's festivities. Each guest, in their own words, was quite effusive about the quality of the program for the day - the parade, the booths, the concert, the food...even not bemoaning the cancellation of the fireworks too much...as the Ravelers seemed to light up the area just as well, in their own inimitable way - with much less fire risk.

In another Al Fresco edition, Claremont Speaks went to the corner of Indian Hill and Foothill (Claremont's Protest Grounds of Choice) during the "Indivisible Claremont/March for Our Lives" demonstration by many of Claremont's dedicated activist citizens - some are or were teachers - about solving gun violence, controlling/eliminating assault rifles, our ineffective gun laws and enforcement, and the country's politicians who seemingly sub-optimize everything around their own self-interests over those that elected them.

Bill Kaufman, a veteran of military service, running and launching several successful businesses and now a spokesperson for Red Workshop LLC, joined Claremont Speaks to discuss how Claremont could benefit considerably by allowing a limited number of cannabis dispensaries to do business in the city. Mr. Kaufman states his case, using real-world examples from surrounding cities, bringing to light a wealth of data, facts and figures regarding the very real and measurable upsides to allowing a few dispensaries to do business in Claremont.
Among Mr. Kaufman's points in his proposal, he outlines that with only a few business in the city, Claremont could add over 100 jobs to the community and improve the city's General Fund by millions of dollars per year. He cites evidence that "legit' dispensaries providing laboratory tested and sealed, proven additive-free product is both far safer for the user and better for the surrounding community than the random-grade, non-regulated, illegals sellers' products - many of which contain just about any additive they like. He outlines a myriad of other topics, including keys to vetting applicants, choosing the right location, how having only a few, but top-flight businesses is to the citizens and the city's advantage, and much more.
Bill Kaufman brings an absolute avalanche of information, facts. figures and projections to the interview, most based on personal experience with dispensaries in surrounding cities. For those who choose to consume, and equally for those who don't, his interview provides answers to many of the questions communities always have - and much more. Currently, one of the "Matters that Matter Most" in Claremont is the Larkin Place Project - Jamboree Housing Corporation's proposal to build a 32-unit Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) project on a property at Larkin Park, next to Pilgrim Place, at 731 Harrison Avenue in Claremont.
Jamboree's Michael Massie, Chief Development Officer and Danielle Latteri, Director of Supportive Services joined CS to answer some of the most pressing questions asked at outreach meetings and from CS listener feedback - about the Larkin Place project. One key to constructing a successful PSH - combining affordable housing with onsite services for vulnerable individuals and couples on very low, fixed income - is the support and inclusion of the surrounding community. Both Mr. Massie and Ms. Latteri provide detailed answers, historical data, facts and figures while combining, in equal measure, empathy and understanding aiming to build a long-term relationship with Claremont and the project's surrounding community. "Claremont is an amazing place to live...so many opportunities here to be involved in real and meaningful and impactful ways" is how Deborah Kekone, Claremont Educational Foundation's Immediate Past President, describes our vintage shire. In this interview, Deborah recounts her path from visiting Claremont as a teenager to moving here and then becoming deeply involved and contributing to the Claremont community in a variety of volunteer, community-improvement programs. Most notable among them is her leadership at the Claremont Educational Foundation, where she is currently one of the core team organizing and promoting the annual CEF Car Raffle event.
In the most recent years, the raffle has been a runaway success, selling out all 5000 tickets, and supporting CEF's mission "to protect and enrich quality public education in Claremont..." by donating the raffles' funds directly to the music, art and science programs in Claremont's public elementary, middle and high schools. CEF's funding makes many key programs possible that could not otherwise exist, and has kept Claremont's fine teachers on staff during times when extremely tight budgets would not have been able to support them. CEF's efforts have provided over $3.7 million to our schools over their three decades of service, maintaining the quality of the education Claremont's students receive, and adding measurably and directly to the value of living in Claremont.

Claremont is privileged to have an abundance of extremely talented, highly educated and extraordinarily interesting people. Few fit that description better than Dr. Deepak Shimkhada; a long-time Nepali-American Claremont resident, a top-rated educator, talented artist and art historian/authority, author of over 20 successful books and an active community leader. In this enlightening and enjoyable interview, Deepak describes his journey from his small, remote home town of Dharka , Nepal (under 1000 homes, no electricity), to schools in Kathmandu and Baroda, India. Earning a Fulbright Scholarship, he moved to Los Angeles, where he attended USC and earned a Masters Degree in the arts. Stephen Cooley - respected and renown District Attorney for Los Angeles County (2000 to 2012) - has since become an outspoken, experienced and respected activist and advocate in LA and California. He is at the forefront of change for a variety of key and crucial non-partisan issues - few more important and germane to recent events in Claremont than the challenge to public safety, fair and equitable justice, and fundamental accountability brought about by the significant and potentially dangerous changes in public policies of current LA DA George Gascón.
In between managing the myriad of responsibilities and requirements involved in leading the charge of the Committee to Support the Recall of District Attorney George Gascón", Steve was able to set aside an hour to explain what is driving him and the committee to remove DA Gascón and rescind his directives (20-06, -07, -08, -09 and -11), thus reversing his pro-criminal, anti-victim policies. This approach, Steve explains, is a very real and severe danger to the public - it diminishes the respect and effectiveness of the legal system and then will continue to "trample upon the dignity and rights of crime victims."
Steve's public career, first as a LAPD reserve officer and nearly three decades as one of Los Angeles' most successful and high-profile prosecutors, provided first-hand exposure and visibility into all levels of law enforcement. His record more than qualifies him to speak with authority about the immediate and long-range collateral damage that George Gascón and his execution of the duties of the office have caused Los Angeles and California.

The annual "Taste of Claremont" has been one of Claremont's main staples of community entertainment, fellowship and contribution to a number of good causes, which many have enjoyed for decades. The most recent years' events were cancelled due to COVID considerations. But, now, the "Taste of Claremont" is back, and is shaping up to be one of the best ever.
The Rotary Club of Claremont's Nona Tirre - the key organizer behind the ToC for 2022 - and Bob Hyde - the originator of the ToC and the visionary that drove it's early growth - joined Claremont Speaks to discuss the Rotary Club's pinnacle fundraising event, scheduled for April 23, 2022. John Frame, one of America's leading and most revered sculptors and alumni of Claremont Graduate University, took some time to talk to Claremont Speaks about his path to becoming a world respected artist, the foundation and inspiration for his works and his breathtaking exhibit which is currently on display at the Claremont Museum of Art. In between sculpting on a level to which most can only aspire, John set aside some time to give listener's a unique and deeply personal insight into his early career and foundations as an artist. He includes relating his "epiphany moment" and touches on the motivation for his art that drives him today. Along the way he intertwines some wonderful anecdotes from his life, career, shows and exhibits.
Mr. Frame is a two-time recipient of Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Talent Award from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as a J. His deeply inspired, moving and technically brilliant work has been exhibited extensively in the United States as well as in Europe, Japan, and China. Nancy Mintie, the founder of the Inner City Law Center and Uncommon Good , returns to Claremont Speaks to reveal her lifelong passion for writing poetry about her reflections on social justice and the nature of life and spirituality. In this second of two interviews with Mark Ralph, President of Claremont Tutors, one of their best tutors, Baili Zhong, joins the program to describe and discuss the next phase in pursuing his passion to help others improve their Financial Literacy. Upon graduating from Claremont's Pomona College with a BS in Chemistry, Baili chose to pivot and turn his penchant and passion for math, finance and using his and his family's money to their own advantage, rather than to that of others. In addition to being a CFO for a crypto-currency focused startup, Baili has written, created and produced a video course teaching the basics of financial literacy; how compound interest can work for and against one, creating and staying on a budget, and choosing the best credit cards and using them to build wealth rather than diminish it, as a few examples.
In his mid-teens, while living in Mississippi with his family who had recently come to the US from rural China, Baili recognized that fundamental financial literacy was not being taught in school, and observed it was absolutely essential to succeeding in America. He immediately took it as his mission to learn all he could. After doing so, and helping his family and college friends get better health care, reduce their debt and improve their credit scores, Baili saw the opportunity to help others and, at 22, is pursuing if full-force by creating, producing and offering this education in a virtual class, available to students of any age.

At the January 12, 2021, City Council Meeting, a proposal for a pilot program was made to evaluate the viability of collecting and delivering Claremont's Green Waste to Athens/American Organics and forking over $85/ton to get them to take it.
