On the eve of the United Nations' International Day of the Remembrance of the Transatlantic Slave Trade (March 25, 2024) historian and afrofeminist Nneka Dennie and I shared space to reflect on the continuing afterlives of American slavery and how this not-so-distant history continues to inform radical activism, storytelling, and liberation efforts today.

Today we are stepping into a space of liminality with doula-in-training and community bridge builder, Shayla, founder of Malawi's House! Birthwork has always existed as a pillar of family, community bonding, and resistance in Black spaces. As mortality rates among Black and brown mothers remain alarmingly high, many are  amplifying the work of Black doulas, birthworkers, and post-partum caregivers who are on the frontlines of advocacy work and accessibility to health services and family planning for Black parents and their communities.

As we celebrate International Mother Earth Day, I wanted to share a conversation I had earlier this month with the farmers behind at Smarter by Nature to talk about the importance of Black farming in the 21st century and reclaiming land not only preserves ancestral traditions, but also helps us reimagine our relationship with food and gardening.

This season, I am sitting down [virtually] with Black storytellers, community bridge builders, entrepreneurs, activists, and womenstorians (women historians) who are upRooting white supremacy and decolonizing their respective fields and communities.

This session featured Kentucky historian and decolonizer, Takeia Anthony who talked about her journey as a Black historian in the midst of revolution and racial reckoning.

Padawan historian Sidney Rose and basketball coach (& Jedi Knight//Khaleesi) Kevin Grayer trek through a space of liminality. In the inaugural episode of the podracing series Man, We Need to Talk, these two discuss how black athletes found themselves at the center of the Long Civil Rights Movement and BLM. Also, Sidney history-splains white supremacy and Kevin takes on toxic masculinity in the black community (that's black with a capital B by the way).
