Hello and welcome back to 'Learn English with Teachify' for another episode of English expressions from our Instagram page, there are 4 of them with a little quiz at the end to finish off. Ready? Here you have a short transcript of the expressions, however not everything is included below, so make sure you listen till the end.

The first expression is to call the shots, which is a nice way to say to be in charge or to make the decisions. If you’re the boss then you call the shots, if you’re the manager of a sports team, you call the shots, if you’re my student in class then I call the shots.

Next up, we have the second expression which is fairly common at this time of the year as it’s all about being ill. The expression is to be under the weather, this week I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather, I’ve got a cold and I can’t stop coughing and sneezing…don’t worry, it’s not COVID but I think it’s because I went out for a run last week when it was raining so I got very wet.

The third expression is related to parties, in particular when speaking about someone who always ruins the mood and kills the fun. In Spanish you might say aguafiestas, while in English we have a couple of options…spoilsport and party pooper. Come on, don’t be a party pooper, come out with us, we’re going to a karaoke bar.

Following the third expression we have our fourth expression which is, each to their own, this is used to show that different people have different interests, hobbies or tastes. In Spanish you could translate it as, cada uno a lo suyo. You want to go hiking this weekend, but my other friend can’t stand hiking, well, each to their own.

Finally, the fifth expression is to run errands. Any guesses what it might mean? To run errands is like to go and do a few simple things that you have to do, such as going to the post office, buying some bread, going to the chemist and so on. Basically to do some little, necessary tasks. In Spanish, hacer unos recados. I’ll be back in about an hour, I’m just going to run some errands first.

In this episode 'Learn English with Teachify' Lewis goes through five of the finest phrasal verbs, tests you on them, gives you synonyms and here you have the transcript, more or less.

To begin let’s start with a phrasal verb which is used with books, in particular when you’re wondering whether to start reading the book or not, it means to quickly look through the pages, the phrasal verb is skim through / (hojear). E.G. I was skimming through the pages of my magazine but it looked a bit boring.

The next phrasal verb is all about the morning and your alarm clock. The phrasal verb is to go off, it can be used for many reasons like bombs which go off too, however, let’s focus on your alarm clock. My alarm clock goes off at 7 or 8 in the morning. (sonar)

The third phrasal verb is to mess around, it means to tell jokes or be silly really. (hacer tonterias) I used to mess around a lot at school, to be honest in class I mess around quite a bit too, that way I think it’s more fun for the teacher and the student.

Blend in is our next phrasal verb and to know the meaning I want you to think about being camouflaged. For example, I try to blend in here living in Spain because I pretend to speak like people here and dress like them so I try to blend in. (pasar desapercibido)

Given that blend in means to be the same as others, how about the opposite of that phrasal verb for our final one, this is to stand out. If you stand out you are different to others, easily noticed and eye-catching. Whenever I wear flip-flops here, I stand out, more so if I wear socks at the same time. Do you stand out at work?

I have two nephews, they’re really naughty and never really do homework or behave well, they’re always messing around.

If you wear sport’s clothes when you go to the gym, you should blend in.

I remember when I went to a football match a while ago, everyone was wearing white to support their team, but there was one guy wearing red, he stood out.

The last time I went to a bookshop, I couldn’t choose a book so I spent over an hour skimming through different books before picking the one I wanted to buy.

The first expression is break a leg and it doesn’t mean what it sounds like, don’t worry, I’m not telling you to break your leg. It’s just a little expression to wish someone good luck, in particular when they’re about to do a play or act. E.G. You’re going to be the star of the show, wow, break a leg! (mucha mierda)

Number two, keep me posted. This is a very nice expression which could be used in a business context at the end of a message or email. It means, let me know or keep communicating any updates or news with me. For example, I need to know what’s happening, so keep me posted. You’re going to apply for that job, in that case, keep me posted on how it goes. (mantenerme informado)

Next up, number three is to go swimmingly, this is quite an usual and funny one. It means to go well, without any complications. My new job is going swimmingly, I had a lot to do last week but everything went swimmingly. (ir viento en popa)

Related to the previous expression, here we have hit the ground running. It means to start really well, begin a task or project excellently. For example, she’s just started her new job, it’s amazing, she’s really hit the ground running. It’s always nice when you hit the ground running and adapt immediately. (arrancar a toda marcha)

Last but not least is to throw in the towel. This is related to boxing and giving up, you literally throw in the towel when you don’t want to continue. I would never throw in the towel, I think you should never give up, be brave and don’t throw in the towel. (tirar la toalla)
So, now you’ve heard these 5 expressions, how many did you already know? Have you ever actually used them in real life? If not, please challenge yourself to do it. Anyway, take a 15 second break to try to remember it then let’s do 5 examples to test you.

To fall for someone – this means to fall in love with someone, usually quickly. People sometimes speak about love at first sight, well you could definitely use this expression if you start to love someone. E.G. When I was younger, I fell for a girl when we were at school. To come up with – meaning to invent, create or imagine. It’s very similar to another phrasal verb, make up but also, think of. Commonly we say, come up with an example, come up with an idea or come up with a plan. Have you ever come up with an amazing idea? Are you normally a creative person who comes up with plenty of plans and ideas? Pensar en, crear, imaginar.

To piss someone off – this is quite British / Australian, maybe less common than in America. It means to make somebody angry or annoyed. E.G. I think I was quite an annoying kid, so I imagine I pissed my sister off quite a lot. Do you know anyone who pisses you off? Sometimes your colleagues, bosses or friends can piss you off. Enfadar a alguien.

To stick with something – this is quite commonly used with new year’s resolutions, diets, productivity goals and similar. Maybe if you’re trying to quit smoking, don’t give up, make sure you stick with it. E.G. I want to get fit so I’m going to the gym, but it’s quite a hard routine to stick with. Seguir con.

Get out of something – this means to free yourself from an obligation, in particular one that you don’t want to do. E.G. my friend has a presentation which he’s trying to get out of. I think he’s going to come up with an excuse. You might have a meeting which you want to get out of. Librarse de.

In this episode of Learn English with Teachify Lewis takes you through 5 different English expressions which have been 'taught' on our Instagram account before. He gives explanations, examples and finishes with a little test. Given that it's a short one, here you have the transcript, more or less.

The first expression is actually just an adjective, a lovely colloquial one – packed. Synonyms are busy, full or crowded. Most beaches in summer are packed, bars in Seville tend to be packed and my agenda is quite packed too.

Next, the second expression is a rule of thumb. This means a general rule, or a guideline. Think about English grammar, often there are exceptions but teachers can give you some useful rules of thumb to follow.

Thirdly, one of my favourites which we use a lot is off the top of my head. It means without preparation or thought, in class we ask students to give some examples off the top of their heads. E.G. The best city I’ve visited, hmmm, I’m not sure but off the top of my head I’d have to say that Rome is the best city I’ve visited but maybe just because I’m thinking about eating some carbonara right now.

Fourthly, bear in mind. Interestingly, bear as a verb is written exactly the same as the animal, a bear. However, in this case it means consider, take into account or keep in mind. E.G. You need to bear in mind that learning a language is never easy.

Last but not least, get the gist. This expression means to understand the main points or a general summary. If you listen to an audiobook you don’t need to understand everything but you must get the gist at least.

Yes there it is, the theme tune for the Simpsons, I’m sure it rings a bell and takes you back to when you were a child watching episode after episode of this popular cartoon all over the world. But have you ever watched The Simpsons in English or did you watch it dubbed, in Spanish?
You know what I’m going to tell you now, check it out in English, in the original version and I bet you’ll enjoy it much more.
It may take a while to get used to the different voices if you’re used to listening to all of the characters speakING in Spanish, but, give it a go, give it a chance, give it an opportunity and you’ll get used to it in no time.
Talking about characters…who’s your favourite Simpsons character?
I think my favourite character is ned Flanders, because, let’s be honest, everybody knows someone who reminds you of ned Flanders. Somebody who has a perfect life, never breaks the rules and is quite frankly, quite annoying, they get on your nerves a bit.
Moving on, let me tell you a few interesting facts and curiosities about the Simpsons that maybe you didn’t know.
- Initially the distinctive yellow color skin was chosen, in part, to make them stand out when flicking through channels and it worked
- The name Springfield was chosen because it’s very generic, there are in fact 30 different Springfields in the US
- TIME magazine voted the Simpsons as the best TV show of the 20th century, would you agree with that?
- Homer’s signature catchphrase, D’oh has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary and an expression he frequently uses has inspired a common toast “to alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.”
- There are countless facts I could list but I’ll let you do some research into other ones, so the final fact is that…there are only six main voice actors for the show who create the voices for practically all of the characters…in the early days they got paid just 30 thousand dollars per episode, whereas nowadays that figure has reached over ten times that amount. They’re rich! They’re minted! They’re loaded!
In recent years I have to admit that I haven’t actually been watching the Simpsons very much, maybe if it’s on tv when I’m having lunch but that’s it and even then, I don’t really watch normal TV anymore.
I have, on the other hand, been seeing lots of memes and articles which highlight the success of the Simpsons in predicting the future. For example…Did you know that The Simpsons foresaw that Donald trump would run for president? We know what happened in real life, unfortunately, thank god that’s over… Did you know that the Simpsons wrote a script about horsemeat back in 1994? Well, there have been similar scandals in the uk, us and Ireland since
What else?
They predicted smartwatches, Disney buying 20th century fox, the ebola outbreak, autocorrect and much, much more. Anyway, that’ll be enough for today…usually we focus on two case studies but I thought that the Simpsons deserved an episode all to itself, so I hope you enjoyed it and learned a thing or two…if you haven’t watched the Simpsons in English then maybe you can start doing it sometime soon.

Business Case Studies: Heineken & RolexThe first one is Heineken, one of the leaders of the beer and alcohol industry as it is the second largest producer of beer in the world. So, simply put, that’s a whole lot of beer but did you know that Heineken has been around for over a century and a half?
Yep, it was founded in 1864 in Amsterdam when it began as a small brewery. Interestingly enough, it kept the same recipe for over a hundred years before experiencing innovation and starting to adapt to the modern, globalized world we live in today.
One of their tactics has been the mass purchasing of competitors to eliminate competition while cutting prices so the more beer you make worldwide, the cheaper it is. A great example of economies of scale.
Anyway, Heineken has an incredible variety of brands such as desperados, Amstel, tiger, and yes, the finest beer in the world…Cruzcampo! olé
Moving on from the business side of things, are you a beer lover? What kind of beer do you like most? I love beer, like many of us and I always get a horrible hangover, I’m so hungover and I actually really like Guiness, IPAs and the typical beer that’s served from a tap and it’s not ice cold, nor warm but you know, room temperature let’s say…I know Spanish people are picky about their beer and it must be freezing cold which is understandable in summer when it’s boiling outside.
Our next company case study is Rolex…the luxury Swiss wristwatch manufacturer. Now, unfortunately I don’t own a Rolex but one way, I will…hopefully haha
Well, despite the company being known as Swiss, the original founder was in fact German and he moved to Switzerland for work before moving again to London which is where Rolex became popular and profitable. This was in the early 20th century and back then, pocket watches were much more popular than wristwatches as they were sturdier and didn’t break easily, it wasn’t until decades later when they caught on and became trendy.
A curious thing to bear in mind with both companies, Heineken and Rolex is that they focussed their attention on sponsorship of events as a way of spreading the word about the companies, this was, at the time, an innovative marketing practice which bore fruit.
I mentioned that I aim to one day own a Rolex, but in truth, I couldn’t care less as my phone tells me the time and I’m always glued to it, besides that, I’m quite happy with my cheap Casios that I almost always have…these affordable battery-powered watches are good enough for me and many others.
It seems that the sustained success of Rolex is down to the fact that they’re so unique and expensive that they represent a kind of status symbol that only the rich and famous can afford. I’d say they’re wasting their money, but if you have the money then you might as well spend it I suppose.

Hello guys, welcome to the Teachify English podcast. My name is Lewis, I’m 27 years old, from Leeds in England and I live I Sevilla as, I’m sure, many of you will already know by now. But in case you’re new to the podcast, we’re a language learning start-up based in Sevilla and Madrid, but as a result of the coronavirus crisis we have decided to expand to and start classes online so wherever you are, you have no excuse, you can learn English.

Starting with the first question, I’m sure you’ve all heard and used the word feedback, but how could we define it? Feedback is a neutral term that describes a message we send, verbally or non-verbally about what is happening around us. Usually it is employed to give opinions or updates on work or tasks that have been carried out or performed, done basically. The majority of people tend to associate feedback with telling someone what they’ve done wrong so it’s almost always negative, but this is not the case. There are many different types of feedback and ways to give it.
Secondly, why is it important? Why does feedback matter? The bottom line, the most important thing is that, feedback is crucial to creating an environment of growth, development and success. In order for a team to be successful, team members have to embrace their expectations, objectives and the main goal and to achieve this, we need help. That’s why it’s key for colleagues, friends or partners to help us get closer to the goals we set. That way we can change our behaviour, adjust what we’re doing and approach the desired outcome.
Now then, thirdly, why are we always so uncomfortable and awkward with feedback? Perhaps, this depends on where people are from and some cultural differences. However, for most Brits, giving feedback is challenging because there is a fine line between feeling like your helping someone and criticising someone, being mean. Not only this, but also the fact that a lot of people get defensive and hostile…most of the time we just don’t know how to respond in that moment despite wanting to grow and develop as people and professionals and we know we NEED to receive feedback for us to be able to do so.
Next up, how can we make it more effective? Improve the way we give feedback? One thing to bear in mind here is that each case will differ and we’ll have to adapt our approach according to each person we speak to and what kind of feedback we plan on giving. That being said, here are some tips to make sure we’re on the right track, that we’re following the correct routine to succeed. If feedback takes place regularly with praise and criticism, people get used to it and expect to receive it, making it something they might even look forward to, thus eliminating the anxiety and stress that sometimes surrounds it. Another thing to remember is that when you provide feedback, it should be specific, objective and clear so that the one who receives the feedback can make the appropriate changes without confusion. Moreover, the importance of using multiple methods shouldn’t be underestimated. Nobody wants to be called into your boss’ office knowing that it’s ‘feedback time’, which can cause you to fear the place and get nervous every time you go. That’s why we should mix it up and send emails, talk to someone by having a walking meeting or even a group meeting.
Now, to finish off, what about me? How do I give and receive feedback? If you’ve listened to any of the previous podcasts, you might know that I can be a little bit shy, not all the time but from time to time I get a bit uncomfortable so as you’ll imagine, this can happen to me when giving and receiving feedback. As far as I’m concerned, you can only improve and overcome this sensation with practice and doing it over and over again. Therefore, I try to welcome feedback at every opportunity. Now you’ve listened to me talking, please, give us some feedback!

Welcome back to the official Teachify podcast, I’m delighted to be recording another episode because right now, this has become one of the most exciting things I do while stuck in quarantine. That’s to say that I actually look forward to recording these podcasts, however sad that might sound. For those of you who are listening to this episode before checking out the previous ones, I would like to invite you to go back to the first episode called ‘Teachify your life’ in which Mickey and I introduce ourselves, the podcast and our company. Once you’ve listened to the podcast you’ll be able to answer questions like the following; who’s Mickey? How long has Lewis lived in Seville? Where are they from and more. Let’s stop beating around the bush and get straight to the point of this episode. This week we’ve been teaching our lovely students whilst focussing on the way we work, both nowadays in quarantine and before this happened by analysing different aspects of work in the 21st century such as feedback, burnout, creativity and other intriguing facets of work. Besides that, we have found some fascinating TED Talks about the topic which provide some great vocabulary and grammar structures. Have you heard of TED Talks? What are TED Talks? What type of talks are you most interested in? Well, according to their website…TED is a non-profit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world. Honestly, I can’t praise TED enough for the work they do and I always recommend their videos, and podcasts to my students once they reach an intermediate level in order to consume authentic content on a range of topics so that they keep their motivation up by watching or listening to talks they’re curious about. Another one of the advantages of TED is that they have a team of translators that are volunteers who subtitle TED Talks to help disseminate knowledge, research and big ideas across languages and borders. What this means is that if you’re paying attention to one of these presentations you can do it without subtitles, with subtitles in English or in Spanish or plenty of other languages. Whilst I would always suggest subtitles in English, there are some benefits of subtitles in your language just in case you come across some strange words or expressions that are complicated to translate. Most of the time, I’d say that the translations are useful more than anything just to set your mind at ease to know what the equivalent of a word is in your language. I, for one, often find myself going a bit crazy if I hear or see a word in another language that I understand in the context but I can’t, for the life of me, think of the translation in my mother tongue. The bottom line is that TED Talks are a wonderful resource to have a look at and a listen to over the days, weeks, months and years to come. Now, to conclude this week’s episode of the podcast, did anyone tune in to take part in the live class that Will and I taught last Friday? If you did, you’ll know that we explained conditionals, had a general chitchat and before I left to have a much-needed nap, I told a joke. Do you remember it? Welcome back Teachifiers to another Official Teachify English Podcast, this time Lewis thought he would share some of his thoughts and reflections during this period of quarantine. Therefore, he decided to dedicate this episode of the pod to learning lessons from this time of difficulty.
