In a meeting not long ago, at the Chamber of Commerce in Carlsbad, I had the pleasure to hear Andria Taylor give a remarkable presentation. Her discourse, "Once Upon a Time... The Power of Storytelling for Your Business," was both delightful and insightful and I knew it needed a wider audience. It's a compact but potent 16-minute episode, a time well spent. If you need to reach out, you'll find me through the contact page on ImaginePodcasting.com https://www.imaginepodcasting.com/contact

In January 2023 Wade Blair gave a presentation at the Carlsbad, CA Chamber of Commerce First Friday Breakfast and asked “Why do people set goals and never take the next steps to properly see them through?” Wade then introduced us all to “The Why Method”. Nikki Tobia was present that day.
Months later at another First Friday Breakfast, I found myself facilitating at a networking table with Wade and Nikki Tobia from the “Free Wheelchair Mission.” Wade and Nikki started talking about Wade’s previous presentation and they both became animated and passionate about the conversation they were having.
I invited them both to come on this podcast to share that enthusiasm.

This is a continuation of the conversations with Lisa Pachence, Audrey Holst, and Patty Block.
Here are a few things that caught my attention I pulled out of the conversation today:
Success is in a “we” and not in an “I.”
Trauma-informed leadership.
The difference between feedback and validation.
Regarding feedback: Don’t be nice. Be honest.
Our messaging is never done. You never “get it.” It’s never right on spot. Our message is meant to evolve. It evolves as we do as humans and business owners.
Trust in the feedback can lead to collaboration.
We were never taught how to receive feedback.
What does collaboration mean? What does it look like?
And what about collaborations between more than two people?

Welcome to What Has My Attention. This is John Biethan.
Today I had the pleasure of bringing back Karen Berzanski to talk about a “Whole Body Approach to Money Mindset.” As usual with Karen, we had a lot of fun, and she gave me some things to think about and work on - which she will also do for you.
If after listening to this episode and you want to bust through your money blocks, she has a money mindset pilot course coming up on Feb. 21st, 2022. So if you’re lucky enough to hear this before that date and to find out more, run over to TheLuckySoul.com/moneypilot. And of course, the show notes have all the links to things mentioned in this episode today.
And Karen, yes, struggly is a word: The state of being both hideously unattractive, and socially awkward. One who is struggly would have to seriously struggle to fit into a 'normal' social situation.
Karen Berzanski is a Certified Life Coach and Pro EFT™ Tapping Coach who helps women bust through their money blocks so they can earn more, expect more, and enjoy more. Karen found Tapping after being hit and run over by a car in 2008.
Not only did it help her heal PTSD and chronic physical pain, but it gave her the confidence to move across the country, start her own business and eliminate nearly $13k in debt – without deprivation.
She’s now committed to helping women and those in marginalized communities re-define their relationship with money, so they can overcome the patriarchal, generational and gender-based programming holding them back from making, being, and enjoying MORE.
She is the founder of TheLuckySoul.com, rescue dog-mom to Banjo, and proud Angeleno.

In today’s show, I’m talking with Juliana Sih, a graduate of Accomplishing Coaching. The program there is built around developing your potential. More than growth, more than development, the program is about transformation.
This episode was recorded on November 5th, 2021 and Juliana had mentioned she was pregnant. Well, she had baby Josephine on December 1st, 2021, and that’s an “accomplishment” in itself right there.
Here’s a sneak peek about what’s to come in the full episode with Juliana Sih.

Welcome to What Has My Attention.
This is John Biethan.
In my conversation with Misty Giordano, after talking about Toyota 4Runners and SUVs, I asked Misty “What has your attention?” Her response? Uncertainty and loud noises.
Highly sensitive people, which make up about 20% of our population.
With a corporate background in HR, she saw that HR professionals were presenting to their employees’ fluffy baseline programs and not a more robust well-being strategy wanted and needed by today’s workforce. So she created “Love Your Life with Misty” as a consultant for those companies.
She is the author of “The Self-Care Survival Guide for Employees.”
Misty Giordano is the owner of Love Your Life, LLC, author of The Self-Care Survival Guide for Employees, and creatrix of The How to Human Experience offering speaking engagements, organizational wellbeing consulting and workshops, individual coaching and group programming centered around reconnecting to your human spirit via creating more room for joy and play. While she loves helping everyone, she especially loves being a mentor for women who feel lost in a life they created around what they felt was expected of them, but not what they actually wanted - leaving them feeling burnt out, stressed out, developing mysterious physical illnesses, their mental health suffering and leaving joy, play and fun as a foreign language. Instead of living life, they're managing it day in and day out. Sound like anyone you know?
A former HR Manager, Misty has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University and her holistic health coaching certificate from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, along with the completion of many holistic courses, workshops and intensives along the way. With a self-proclaimed Doctorate in Life, Misty gathers tools and resources that have helped her in years past to heal through life circumstances such as corporate burnout, autoimmune disease and remission, caregiving burnout, divorce and total life transformation to light a path forward for her clients and workshop participants. More than a coach, Misty illuminates an array of options and resources to guide her clients on their next steps in their own healing journey. A never-ending student of life herself, she is always learning, growing, and diving into the next breadcrumbs along her path. Misty proudly lives a digital nomadic lifestyle, and in her spare time, you can find her on any number of exploration adventures with her dog Mugsy in their home city of Chicago, checking out new landscapes, partaking in some kind of experiential travel experience, curled up with a good book or diving into an inspiration-led art project. Misty is also a board member for She's Rising, an organization that provides high school students with a broad perspective of the types of jobs available to them.

Welcome to What Has My Attention. This is John Biethan.
I first had Shannon Dalton Giordano from Serendipity Social Media on episode 21titled “Your Tone of Voice.”
This episode with her was recorded in August 2021 and is titled “Being Brave on Social Media” where Shannon gives humane tips on how to use social media to authentically interact and drive engagement on your social media channels.
For this episode when I asked her what she’d like to talk about, she said, “Let’s talk a bit about visibility hangovers. I am happy to share what I'm hearing most from clients - how to show up authentically, how to be brave, and how to not feel terrible if you don't receive good engagement (aka visibility hangover).”
This is a refreshing approach that I really appreciate, and what makes Shannon a Women in Strong Leadership, and who can show you HOW to create a Social Media Strategy that works!

“I’ve spent 17 years in technology with most of it in a state of denial, overwhelm and exhaustion. I knew this wasn’t the life I wanted. I loved the idea of building things for people. I always have. The engineer in me wanted to use products to make people’s lives better. However, I found myself at companies like DoubleClick, Google, DialogTech. All focused on advertising and helping marketers, which wasn’t quite hitting my desire to make the lives of people better.
I found myself as the VP of Product Management and failing to get pregnant. I was more miserable and overwhelmed than I had ever been before, even when my health was at its worst in my 20s. I knew something had to change. I knew it was time to follow my heart and go after my dream of being a life and leadership coach.
During one of the women groups at my company, the speaker we brought in kept mentioning her coach. I took it as a sign that I needed to make the step to get into coaching.
And so, I started my journey to becoming a life and leadership coach and changing my life in the process. People now comment on how much more relaxed I am and happy I look. I’ve found things that I had lost over the years. A renewed connection to the universe and spirit. A renewed appreciation and love of my body. And so much more!” ~ Jamie Martin

Dr. Gretchen Schmelzer, PhD has worked hard for twenty-five years to “change the conversation about trauma, growth, and development for individuals, groups and organizations.”
As she says on her website, “Healing From Trauma is Possible - Healing is Brave - No One Heals Alone.”
Shannon Giordano https://serendipitysocialmedia.com/ thank you for introducing us to each other!
I consider this interview and conversation to be one of the most important episodes covered in the series I’m doing here, “Women in Strong Leadership.”
Visit the episode notes for the link to Gretchen’s website, and there you’ll find articles, blogs and videos including the March 2020 interview on CNN's Anderson Cooper titled “How to cope with anxiety and stress linked to coronavirus pandemic.”
This episode “could” be considered a bit of an update to that conversation.
After listening to this episode, and when you find it useful because I’m sure you will, please share it with others you care about, family, friends, or co-workers. It’s important. And please pick up her book: Journey Through Trauma from her website.

This episode is time-sensitive and is a PSA for Tomorrow’s Women, a non-profit organization headquartered in Santa Fe, New Mexico that empowers young Israeli and Palestinian women to create change in areas of conflict.
So if you like what you hear, on Saturday, July 31st, 2021 you’ll have the opportunity to hear directly from the 2021 campers, speaking live from their unprecedented camp taking place in the Middle East near Bethlehem. And if you’re so moved and want to support this work, please consider making a donation of any size at TomorrowsWomen.org.
I’m joined today by the Director of Tomorrow’s Women, Tarrie Burnett, and two campers from the 2021 camp who at the camp Saturday, July 31st will be joined by young leaders, sharing stories of peace amidst the recent violence.
In this episode, Tarrie mentions my involvement in podcasting the 2006 monologues performed at the beautiful Lensic Theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I had recorded 6 episodes from that evening.
Towards the end of this interview, and after our goodbyes at about the 32-minute mark, you’ll have the opportunity to hear the monologues of several young women leaders from that 2006 camp.
At the time I was working with Tanya Taylor Rubinstein and Camille Adair at Project Lifestories, an organization that was brought into the camps to help the girls write and perform their stories as monologues. I’d been podcasting for about a year and took the opportunity to record 6 episodes of the monologues.
Saturday, July 31st @ 9 am PDT / 6 pm Jerusalem Time. This virtual event is free and open to the public. Please consider making a donation in support of our fundraising goal of $10,000 for the evening. Proceeds will go directly to the Young Leader program and additional training opportunities for these brave young women.
You may register for the free event here https://tomorrowswomen.org/media-and-events/

Today Rebecca Le Vine will show you as an employee how to move out of “magical thinking” and into action and learn to love your Mondays.
Rebecca and I met at Mary Cravets Watch Us Thrive networking calls which, if you’re looking to spend time with quality people, I highly recommend you go to WatchUsThrive.com and sign up to receive notifications.
Now most video versions of the podcasts are in the blog at WhatHasMyAttention.com.
What needs to be different, better or more? To gain freedom, expression, and reward. Most of us need a plan.
Ask yourself, what have I learned from my COVID experience? Ask:
What did you learn? What do you want? What are you here to give? And how can you make that happen?
And that all comes into strategy moving out of “magical thinking” and into action.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’ve been doing a series of conversations with “Women in Strong Leadership.” Those conversations will continue.
But today I wanted to share a conversation about podcasting which I had with Sam De Santo, my creative director at my podcast creative agency Imagine Podcasting https://www.imaginepodcasting.com.
I bring this to your attention today because so many people have been asking me about podcasting, what it is, if they’re interested, how to get started.
We’d like to share with you “Why Podcast” and 8 points we feel worthwhile to know, and why I continue to produce podcasts for clients even after 16+ years.
You may even experience a few “Aha moments” along the way.

This is the 2nd in a series of Women in Strong Leadership. Here we discuss several enhancements to coaching by leading with love.
It’s interesting to me, and there’s more on this topic to come, as the ground is fertile here. It has my attention and is important to me and others as the business landscape changes to a more humane business culture with women leading this in strong leadership and coaching often referenced by the work of Brene Brown and Simson Sinek, partners in this revolution.

So if you’ve been with me recently, you know I’ve developed a curiosity and work ethic for writing. Well today, I get to have Chris Sheridan on the show. Chris is a writer. A storyteller, and an executive coach. So I was thrilled to have him on the show.
If you’d like, come by WhatHasMyAttention.com and lay down a voice message on that little blue button on the bottom right of your screen. And of course, you can follow us anywhere you get your audio.
A little about Chris in his own words I started when I was in college. I was in front of the camera and behind the microphone and then realized that where that power was, was actually behind the scenes in terms of the editorial judgment of what stories you're covering and how you're covering them. What angle you're approaching them with, etc. It was more interesting to me than getting my mug on camera.
And so I opted to stay behind the scenes and I worked my way doing that. And then, and now, I now have pivoted to a portfolio career where I teach storytelling at Wake Forest University as part of a documentary film program.

Today I have the pleasure of having Shannon Dalton Giordano from Serendipity Social Media, Inc. on the podcast. I met Shannon through Eileen Cox from True To Choice who I had met through Mary Cravets and her excellent Watch Us THRIVE online Zoom calls.
“I'm a singer and love to sing just for fun, not professionally. So I think about Tone of Voice as how we show up. It's the words we use. It's the way we talk. It's the way we treat people. And I think that certainly from a brand perspective, often brands don't think about their tone of voice enough.
I am talking about the written word. So it sounds funny since tone really makes it sound like it's going to be something audible, but yes, the words that you're using on social media, blog posts, advertising, and the ways that you talk to people.
How do you want people to view you? Do you want them to see you as warm, inviting, and inclusive? Do you want to be fun? Do you want to be snarky? Do you want to be cutting edge? There are all sorts of ways you can impact your tone of voice so that people understand who you are and how you're trying to show up. It’s about storytelling.
I start from, what's the thing that I'm trying to share. And then I try to think about what in my life is meaningful to me?
And usually, it bubbles up to some story, whether it's about music or whether it's about a family member or training my dog or whatever it is. Do you use an anecdote to connect with people? I think it does two things. It really gets the point I'm trying to make across, but it also lets them have a little glimpse into my personality and who I am.
Working with businesses, writing all of their social media posts, which I still do to some degree, but now, for the most part, I'm doing much more with strategy sessions, trying to help business owners and entrepreneurs figure out their strategy. I think a lot of people keep trying things on social media and not understanding why they don't work. I think it's much more effective to tell stories that are targeted to the pain points of the clients that you want to reach. So then they see themselves in your stories without you even having to say, buy this thing.
Sometimes it can just be a really easy, a small switch. Everything you're posting is promotional. Maybe you think you're getting your message across, but it really doesn't make sense and people don't know what you do. So I've been spending a lot more time trying to get under the covers with business owners to figure out what they are doing now and how to put a strategy in place that works.
It makes sense for them to read the analytics and insights and understand what's working, and what's not. I think sometimes we all just keep trying to do the same thing without desired results, the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.” ~ Shannon Dalton Giordano

What is Leadership? What is the nature of leadership on the court as distinct from observing leaders, studying leaders, their traits, and characteristics?
“Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It’s about impact, influence, and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire teammates and customers.” ~ Robin S. Sharma
The Four Pillers, Foundational Elements 1 - Being Real and Authentic
Quote: “After years of studying leaders and their traits, I believe that leadership begins and ends with authenticity.” “Authentic leaders genuinely desire to serve others through their leadership.” ~ Bill George
2 - Your willingness to be responsible for everything in your life. You give up the right to blame anyone else.
3 - Being committed to something much bigger than what satisfies you, your concerns, and what you’re out for.
4 - Integrity. The organization is whole and complete and honors what it’s presenting out to the public. Standing by what it offers its employees and vendors, and others who interact with the organization.

The journey of a writer that took him to podcasting.
Since I recently started writing I’ve noticed a few things that may be apparent to you, but they certainly weren’t to me. As I’ve said before in previous episodes, writing with intention is a new experience for me.
In the middle of the audio edit of this episode, it dawned on me how clearly Kent is as a communicator. I’ve been experiencing a similar “clarity” in my thinking since starting to write with intention. So this insight was the gem I received from the interview with Kent. Also, it’s such a pleasure to be on a remote podcast interview with a fellow podcaster who’s using a good microphone and is wearing headphones (hint hint). Enjoy the gems in this episode!
When Kent Sanders from the Daily Writer started podcasting, over time, he sort of had triplets.
Kents’ first podcast he created was called “The Artists Suitcase.”
Kents’ second podcast was called “Born to Create” which several months later he renamed “Smart Business Writing” because he was getting into ghostwriting and wanted to know and share how to use content and writing to build a business.
In November of 2020, he decided to “twist it” just a little bit and called it “The Daily Writer.” He now has the “Daily Writer” community and he’s working on a book with the same name.
As Kent says, “Sometimes it takes you a few tries before you land on a concept that really sticks with you and sticks with your audience.” I totally agree from my own experience with a podcast I created in 2014, which is now called Alternative Health Tools. Three names later, it stuck.
Kent thinks there’s about 20 to 30% of his writing community are podcasting. Interesting.
Kent ends this episode with this advice to writers, “Somebody’s got to write it. Why not you?”

What Has My Attention podcast https://www.whathasmyattention.com/17
You're probably wondering what sandtray has to do with podcasting. Simply put, it’s had my attention for a very long time. And since this podcast is about what has my attention, well there you go.
But it was being on Kim Shea’s Pivot and Thrive Podcast episode 16 titled “John Biethan and Stephanie Murphy: An Extraordinary Couple Builds Their Future Together” where in the conversation my partner Stephanie talked about Sandtray. Kim gave me permission to use a portion of her episode to drop in here so you could know what Sandtray is and how as an Art Therapist, Stephanie uses it in her practice. Thank you Kim I appreciate it!
And a note: There is a difference between Sandplay and Sandtray.
“In Sandplay, the therapist does not intervene with the client once the tray is created. Instead, the therapist keeps the focus on the unconscious of the client. By contrast, the humanistic sandtray therapist is actively involved in facilitating an experience of awareness and growth.” ~ Sandtray Therapy institute https://bit.ly/3wfim4C.
So Sandtray is a tool that allows a therapist to help their client tell a story.
So if you really think about it, the best podcasts you hear are telling stories. That’s why the length of a podcast doesn’t matter. It’s the content and the storytelling that matters.
For what follows about Sandtray, I've kept Kim's introduction to Stephanie and myself and then ask Stephanie the question of what is Sandtray.
Lastly, I want to again thank Kim Shea and of course Stephanie. And there are three others I want to thank.
Dave Herndon who taught me the value of first writing an outline before telling your story. He can be heard on episode 6 titled “Dave Herndon: How to Tell Your Story.”
Peggy Lebo, our True Voice Method voice coach at ImaginePodcasting.com who guided me through her method which, has given me more confidence and brought out a voice to better express myself.
And writing my solo episodes would have not been possible without the coaching from Kent Sanders at DailyWriterLife.com. I discovered Kents Daily Writer Podcast months ago and jumped into his Daily Writer Coaching program.
So what’s Sandtray got to do with podcasting? Storytelling.
If you’re doing solo episodes and want to clarify your thoughts, visit Kent’s links and his podcast. We have an upcoming episode with Kent in the upcoming weeks.
And I’ve scheduled some time with Barry Berman on the topic of Leadership. Barry’s business is Integritas Consulting https://www.integritasconsult.com/ and we’ll be talking about “integrity.”
Until next time, consider what has your attention and is valuable, and let go of the rest.
Thanks for listening. You can always get a hold of me at What Has My Attention. You can even leave me a voice message there. There's a little blue button you can tap on to leave feedback or ask a question. If you want to find out more about why we're hired by people that keep putting off starting their podcast because it seems so complicated and expensive, and what they really want is to get their brand and message out there in a bigger way, head over to ImaginePodcasting.com and schedule a free call with me. I’m happy to help.

What Has My Attention podcast https://www.whathasmyattention.com
If this is your first time here, welcome. I’m John Biethan your host.
This is being recorded on March 12, 2021, and I know things look very much like if we mind our P’s and Q’s we’ll be able to get back to some real unmasked socialization very soon.
Probably the most valuable thing I’ve learned over the last many years of podcasting is that over time, podcasting builds long-lasting, trusted relationships that are absolutely worth their weight in gold personally and in business. And during the pandemic, there have been a lot of NEW podcasters who are on the path to discovering just that.
But here’s what's got my attention lately and with a very big concerning question.
What are the physiological effects and impact of the isolation most of us have experienced in the last year?
Here are some things I’ve discovered with everything I’m quoting on here found in the links provided in the episode program notes.
Where did “Social Distancing” Come From? The Guardian May 28, 2020, by Steven Poole
'Social distancing': how a 1950s phrase came to dominate 2020
If “social distancing” sounds to you more like snubbing or ghosting a friend, you are right. It was a 1957 collection of work by sociologist Karl Mannheim that first described it as a way to enforce power hierarchies. “The inhibition of free expression can also serve as a means of social distancing,” he wrote. “Thus, the higher ranks can constrain themselves to preserve a certain kind of deportment or dignity.” In doing so, they distance themselves socially from the plebs.
From “Social” to “Physical” Futurism.com, The Byte March 20th, 2020 by Victor Tangermann
The WHO wants you to ditch the phrase “social distancing”
The World Health Organization is officially advocating against the phrase “social distancing” and is from here on // recommending the phrase “physical distancing” instead, according to Reuters.
The idea is to clarify that an order to stay at home during the current coronavirus outbreak isn’t about breaking contact with your friends and family - but rather keeping a physical distance to make sure the disease doesn’t spread.
Psychological Effects of “Social Distancing” PMC // US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health August 16, 2020, by Kevin Sikali
The dangers of social distancing: How COVID‐19 can reshape our social experience
To society, social distancing presents the dangers of increasing social rejection, growing impersonality and individualism, and the loss of a sense of community. It negatively affects learning and growth, and it prevents people from effectively socializing, which is a fundamental human need.
Austen Riggs Center / August 10, 2020 / By Katie Lewis, PhD
Staying Away: The Psychological Impact of Social Distancing
Right now, the physical health and well-being of the country depend on our adherence to the recent and ongoing implementation of social distancing (SD) in communities across the globe // to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). However, the current scale of SD is unprecedented and may lead to significant and lasting negative psychological effects. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and a recent review of studies about quarantine during infectious disease outbreaks[1], SD can lead to a higher prevalence of: Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Loneliness, Feelings of frustration, and Boredom.
Sound familiar? I’ve experienced at least 4 of those conditions now and in this last year.
Last March 2020 when all this started social distancing, I realized this: connection and relationship are the vaccines against isolation.
So here’s what I’m doing. When I have someone that comes to mind and I’m curious about how they are doing, I pick up the phone and call them. I don’t text or email them. I call them. Maybe we’ll jump on a screen call. Maybe not.
Until we get this virus under control, replace “social” with “physical” when you’re talking about it and pick up the phone.

With podcasting, when you have a good “dynamic” microphone and learn how to use it, you’ll be up close and personal with the person you’re having a conversation with. You’ll experience the person more fully, which makes it easier to “empathize” and BE WITH the person you’re talking with, resulting in a more meaningful conversation.
I started out the day by outlining a “solo” episode with the topic “Up Close and Personal,” the advantages of good microphone technique, with a good microphone.
But then, while remotely on Squadcast helping Kim Shea, our co-producer and co-host for Alternative Health Tools podcast set up her “Cloudlifter,” I thought let’s record this as an episode!

As you imagine the world of podcasting, we thought it would be useful to offer a brief overview of the landscape, as we see it. Very simply, podcasting, over time, creates long-lasting and trusted relationships…which are worth their weight in gold. Here are eight reasons why:
Podcasting, as it relates to people 1. People consume podcasts for longer periods of time vs. video or reading. 2. Listening to podcasts is an easy and pleasurable experience because you can become immersed without the distraction of what’s going on in the millions of tabs on your browser or your phone constantly screaming at you visually. 3. Advertising on podcasts is far less intrusive and distracting than it is on video. 4. Listening to a podcast is an intimate experience – ears only. You can pick up nuances in tone, intonation, emotion in their voice. Podcasts make information personal. 5. Listening to a podcast is a transportive experience. As listeners listen to a storyteller, they are transported to a particular moment in time and place in their mind as the story is being told. It’s the same as reading but without the eye strain.
Podcasting, as it relates to businesses 1. For businesses, once you have a podcast, it demonstrates to other businesses that you immediately have something to offer them – a stage and an audience. An opportunity for them to speak about themselves and demonstrate their service or product to a new group of people. 2. For businesses, podcasts offer the experience of speaking on a convention stage to a crowded auditorium of people, without the travel, hotel, flights, venue, catering, etc. 3. Podcasts will help you be a better communicator when talking about your business. It’s speaking in public without the public’s eyeballs on you. Much less stress, much better results.
Takeaway Podcasting is more than fun – it’s an extension of you, your voice, and your brand. It’s an amazing way to reach new people. Podcasting is portable, personal, accessible, versatile, intimate, and adaptable. It is the way of the future.
To conclude, podcasts have an undeserved reputation for being complicated and expensive. They are not. To be effective, they simply require that you do what so many others don’t: have a story worth telling, create imaginative program segments, and provide a quality listening experience. This is who we are and what we do.

We’re going to take a bit of detour here before we get back to the conversation first started in episode 12 talking about our process for podcast brand discovery.
It’s January 26, 2021, and we’re still in a pandemic dealing with the challenges that come with it - and even as the vaccines start to roll-out, the risks aren’t going away anytime soon.
It’s my highest recommendation that you listen to at least the first 10 minutes of this episode and share it with as many business owners you know then go to GetPassPoint.com to find out more.
PassPoint is a cloud-based Compliance Tool for businesses. It helps businesses both big and small adhere to the different COVID compliance rules that are out there. And specifically with COVID, the rules have been changing a lot, right? If you think back to where you were in March 2020, and what we knew about the versus, and where we are today, the rules have changed a lot. The science has changed, it's evolved. And that's been very challenging for many businesses because not only are you trying to keep your doors open but now you have a bunch of rules and regulations that you have to adhere to as well. So PassPoint is a tool that will help you organize and automate that entire process for business owners. Of course in doing so, it also helps protect the employees.

I’m John Biethan your host for this podcast, What Has My Attention. I’m also the President of Heard Not Seen Media thus, the reference to “President” in the title of this episode. As you might guess, this show is literally about what has my attention, whether that’s about podcasting or something else that caught my attention and which I’ve put some thought into.
So I haven’t put out an episode for about a month and want to give you an idea about where I’ve been, what I’ve been doing, and where this is all going.
Although I’ve been producing podcasts since 2005, it wasn’t until July 2020 when I got serious about going beyond this one-person entity building a creative podcast production company. Heard Not Seen Media, Inc. was born and we started work on the dba ImaginePodcasting.com the front face to the business.
We have several different podcast startup packages to fit the needs of a business that wants to get started podcasting. One of our services found in our MACH 3 package is a “brand discovery” process, which creates a foundation on which every other element or aspect of the podcast is built on. With this “foundation,” everything else just falls into place.
So when I decided to get committed to THIS podcast, it only made sense to go through the process with some of the team, our Creative Director and Brand Storyteller Sam De Santo, and our Graphics Brand Designer Meg McCarley. So in the next few weeks, I’ll be giving you a glimpse of what that experience is like.
On a side note, I’ve decided to spend some time working on my writing skills. I’ve never really enjoyed writing but, lately, it’s had my attention and I want to develop the skill necessary to communicate better in the written form. You see, in 2004 when I discovered podcasting, part of my attraction to it was that it was called “audio blogging” even before the name podcasting stuck.
So here’s a quote from Nikki Giovanni that got my attention. “Writing is a conversation with reading; a dialogue with thinking.” Think about that for a minute, do a little writing and see if that’s what you experience.
So briefly back to the brand discovery for What Has My Attention. With encouragement from the team, this podcast will be about what has my attention, which will be shared with you if I think it deserves your attention.
So that’s it for today. If you’d like to find out more about how to tell your story, take a listen to Dave Herndon who’s on our team in Ep. 6 Dave Herndon: How to Tell Your Story, and read the program notes for the episode where you’ll find links you may find useful.
One last thing. On this day January 21, 2021, and still in the pandemic, and with the new strain of the virus that scientists are saying is about 50% more transmutable, I’ve ordered a package of the K94 4-layer face masks from Amazon. These masks are recommended when you can’t find the gold-standard N95 ones.
In upcoming episodes, we’ll also be having conversations with our team members where they’ll share their expertise. Until next time, what has your attention? It’s important to know.
This episode was recorded using a Samson Q2U which I recommend for budget-minded people wanting to start their podcast. And it was recorded on a Rodecaster Pro, edited in Adobe Audition, and finally, run through Auphonic for final mastering and creation of the MP3 published to our media server on Libsyn’s platform. If you’re starting out, we recommend using Libsyn as your media server. You can receive 30-days of free hosting when you use the coupon code “whathas” at check-out.

My guests on this episode have got my attention for several good reasons:
I admire the environmental work they do in promoting the restoration and preservation of a natural resource in my own community of Carlsbad, California. And I’m eager to help them succeed in their mission by starting a podcast about specific aspects of the ecosystem and their role in it, like their Monarch butterfly program.
Lisa Rodman is the CEO and Samantha Richter is the COO of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation.
The foundation’s centerpiece is the Discovery Center, an interactive exhibit geared towards educating children about the ecology of the lagoon. Teachable subjects include flora and fauna, water conservation, aquafarming, astronomy, and Native culture. They established the Academy of Environmental Stewardship to educate the next generation of environmentalists.
A core mission of their trail walks and restoration program is to teach guests of all ages to appreciate and preserve the nature that is all around us.
Other initiatives and activities include recruiting volunteers, planning events, and, of course, fundraising through corporate and individual membership programs.
An example of the kind of success they can achieve: The foundation raised $8 million to eradicate a “killer algae” that threatened the viability of the lagoon.

Program notes by Dave Herndon.
Today’s guest Makeala Ferguson is a new friend I met on Mary Cravets Watch Us THRIVE Zoom call, which I do several times a month and where I consistently meet great people like Makeala. These calls are open and free. I suggest you join us.
Makeala has almost 16 years of experience at the secondary (7 years) and post-secondary education (9 years) levels, and has successfully taught personal and professional development courses, advised high school students and adult learners, and managed general education faculty. She is currently The Pacific Institute campus trainer for faculty, staff, and students - which consists of helping people identify how their habits, attitudes, beliefs, and expectations impact performance.
We cover a little bit of Makeala’s background. I ask, “Does everyone need a coach?” Makeala gives us a few examples of the clients she’s worked with. I fully disclose my gift of Attention Deficit Disorder and we discuss that a bit.
I ask Makeala to let us know about a “defining moment” in her life where everything changed. Makeala shares with us how she found the support needed to get through a difficult time.
Makeala gives me a short lesson on Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology which Makeala is in school to receive a graduate certificate for. We talk about leadership roles.
Makeala leaves us with her favorite quote from Maya Angelou “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style!” Contact Makeala Ferguson Makeala-Addell.com

While living in New Mexico, I started podcasting in 2005 first producing Jeffery Milburns Omni Art Salon, which Jeffrey continues today with over one-quarter of a million downloads. That my friends is another Flashback Friday episode forthcoming.
In 2006 I was well on my way producing podcasts when I got a call from a friend asking if I knew Jim Terr from Blue Canyon Productions. I said I didn’t. My friend told me he was a comedian and a local New Mexican radio personality and I should have him on my show. So I gave him a call. I called him and we agreed for him to come into my studio the following Wednesday at noon. That Wednesday morning around 9 AM I got a call that went something like this:
Is this Mr. Be? I said it’s John. The voice on the other end introduced himself as BuDDy a good friend of Jim Terr. He explained that Jim couldn’t make that date and had suggested he come instead. I said Okay. BuDDy went on to say… Mr. Be, you just play it straight and I’ll take it from there. The following Wednesday at noon, BuDDy showed up, which became the birth of BuDDy’s Old Fashioned Podcast, we just wanna be your friend, the character created by Jim Terr. Over the 36 episodes we created together, Jim (BuDDy) taught me how to use my voice with a microphone. He made me a few pop-filters for the microphones and mentored me in so many more ways. To date, this show was the most fun I’ve ever had on a podcast.
What follows is my favorite episode, episode 16: A Glamourous Guest, recorded and released July 7, 2006, after the recent Fourth of July.
If you go to the show notes for this episode, you’ll see the “original” show notes BuDDy wrote for the episode. Many of the links mentioned are now dead and noted. But nothing else was changed.
Start of BuDDy’s original show notes for this episode (Note “English” spelling of “glamourous”)
Are we putting headlines in “initial caps” like #13 or not? (Executive decision)
These notes are a little extra long, allowing for the “filmstrip” if you’re able to run it down the side, though I’m not attached to the filmstrip idea since the top photo is already generally pretty small. Do whatever you want with the photos, as long as you put her best one at the top, and don’t include anything of BuDDy’s neck below where a regular shirt collar WOULD be, and please don’t use photo #1985 in which BuDDy looks toothless – thanks.
God, I enjoy writing these show notes!
BuDDy #16 A Glamourous Guest
BuDDy “rings in” the program with some prayer chimes thoughtfully supplied by Ms. Steph, which are sure to become a regular feature of the program until BuDDy tires of them.
After letting BuDDY rattle on for a few minutes about something or other, Mr. Be announces the installation of a Listener Comment Line for BuDDy’s Old Fashioned Podcast! (now a dead link)
Before they try it out, Mr. Be introduces a surprise guest, the lovely actress, and video editor Kate VanDevender of Albuquerque and New York City. That’s right, New York City! (we don’t mess around here on BOFP).
BuDDy is dazzled into near-speechless awkwardness but quickly recovers to suggest they listen to the comment line, which in fact contains only one crackly “test” comment from BuDDy. Mr. Be gamely suggests that listeners start phoning in their comments and questions anyway, but BuDDy suggests a more conservative approach of ironing out the bugs first, and there it stands for now.
Anyhow, our Miss Kate talks of her acting career, including her upcoming role in a comedy called “Sealed for Freshness” in New York. BuDDy offers his expertise on “burping” Tupperware. She also talks about her video editing business, ImagineEdit (now a dead link), wherein she prepares “demo reels” for actors. (Kate’s own “reel” is included there!)
BuDDy, not surprisingly, mentions his inclusion on the Forbes Billionaire List.
Kate also talks about her participation as an editor for the short film, “Eddy Ray”, in the upcoming Duke City Shootout (now a dead link) in Albuquerque.
BuDDy mentions that the podcast has been heard in such exotic locales as Canada, Denmark, Germany, the UK (formerly England), and Yugoslavia (formerly something or other), according to our podcast “stats” (statistics). BuDDy also wishes out loud that we could get in a fresh supply of our podcasting essential, Marsha Mason’s Throat Therapy Spray (now a dead link), for ourselves and our guests.
We play a rockin’ cut by last week’s guest, Rick Mena, called “I Failed The Lie Detector Test,” from his self-titled (or “eponymous”) CD called, not surprisingly, “Rick Mena.”
BuDDy sings a joyous song called “Another Heterosexual Wedding (Here in Santa Fe)”, accompanied by Mr. Be and Miss Kate, and explains that the song was actually written and performed for an actual heterosexual wedding here in Santa Fe! BuDDy reminds us that he’s not trying to stir up any controversy, and simply wants to be our friend.
Another ring or two of the prayer chimes, and we’re outta there!

If you want to be a better writer, this episode is for you.
My guest Dave Herndon is an accomplished non-fiction editor and writer, with nearly 40 years of experience at quality newspapers and magazines. We asked him for a few writing tips, which turn out to be good advice for delivering information and storytelling regardless of medium or platform. Dave stresses the importance of outlines, so here’s a somewhat shrunken version of his outline.
Herndon referred to two examples of craftsmanship that represent solutions to different interviewing/writing problems. He wrote a piece about Ted Turner, A Turning Point in Turner Country, but only had 20 minutes with TT. See how he deployed a scant inventory of quotes to create the impression that Turner himself is helping to tell this story.
Another piece had the opposite issue: Herndon had lots of access to the subject--who died while he was writing it. So the story had to change in mid-process, with the stakes raised considerably. The piece is titled, The Voice of the People, about Andy Palacio.

I first met Mel Robertson from De-Cluttering Spaces at a networking mixer in 2016. After experiencing her clarity, obvious presence, and knowledge of the subject, I brought her on Alternative Health Tools podcast April 5, 2016, for episode 44, Mel Robertson: De-Cluttering Spaces And Becoming A Happiness Seeking Missile. This episode continues to be one of the top 3 episodes on that podcast since 2014.
If you’re new to networking groups, you’ll learn a lot from this episode about possibilities and what commitment you’ll need to make with your networking group to be successful in your business.
Beyond networking, Mel’s business De-Cluttering Spaces is all about getting organized from the inside out - where inside there, your happiness awaits you. Be sure to watch De-Cluttering Spaces on Desert Living with Bryan Gallo YouTube video (4:16 mins).
Mel’s latest passion project is working with Voices for Children. Voices for Children transforms the lives of abused children by providing them with volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). Mel in fact is a court-appointed officer advocating for the children.

Today I’m talking with Karen Berzanski who can be found at TheLuckySoul.com, a Certified Life Coach, Pro EFT Tapping Coach, Mindset enthusiast, and trauma thriver. We’re joined by Stephanie Murphy from MesaVistaWellness.com, MA, RN, MEd, LPCC, ATR-BC, and Art Therapy Supervisor.
All three of us have wanted to have a conversation about “misogyny.” Here it is. By the end of this episode, it was apparent there was more to talk about - in upcoming episodes.
What Is Misogyny? Misogyny: hatred of women - ref. Random House Unabridged Edition of the entire English language (print).
Misogyny: Dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women. ‘she felt she was struggling against thinly disguised misogyny’ - ref. The Oxford Dictionary (online).
Misogyny manifests in numerous ways, including social exclusion, sex discrimination, hostility, androcentrism, patriarchy, male privilege, belittling of women, disenfranchisement of women, violence against women, and sexual objectification - ref. Wikipedia
I produced a podcast episode in 2007 with Stephanie interviewing Craig S. Barnes, the author of "In Search of the Lost Feminine.” That interview is included at the end of this episode. A notable definition from Stephanie and the book: “Marriage - an institute created by men to harness the power of the next generation.”
This episode started out when I asked Karen if she had heard Stephanie’s interview with Craig. What follows in the conversation unfolds from that question.

This episode was recorded on October 16, 2019, before the pandemic while Tracy and Laurie were visiting me here in San Diego. This is the 2nd of two recordings we did while they were here. Go back to episode 2 and listen to “Medical Tourism” to find out how you can get all your medical needs met at a fraction of the cost you’d spend here in the states while traveling the world having fabulous vacations - all expenses included for twenty-five dollars a day, $750 a month!
Laurie has a background in biofeedback and using TENS units. TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.
Tracy loves the expression “Same Same but Different” and describes himself “today” as someone who’s been on his “soul tour” for the last 15 years.
We then pick up the conversation from episode 2 on “Medical Tourism” and talk about how to travel the world cheaply and,
