Discussing a variety of topics from hunting heritage and traditions of South Texas to strategies and tactics for hunting and fishing. You will hear from a range of guests in the outdoor industry, including professional hunting/fishing guides, conservationists, biologists and officials from fish and wildlife agencies. We discuss the future of hunting and fishing. Discussions will not be limited to the Texas outdoors as you will also hear various topics about opportunities in other states that offer public land hunting/fishing. And of course we will tell some great hunting and fishing stories about the one that may or may not have gotten away. The Host, Emilio, was born and raised in South Texas and has grown up with a passion for the outdoors and simply enjoys talking about all things hunting and fishing.

In this episode, Manny and I are joined by Corey Spriggs aka Hog Snyper, he is an avid outdoorsman who moved to South Texas and fell in love with our State and ignited a passion for hunting and fishing. Specifically, he has made a name for himself in nighttime thermal hunting. He started out with hogs and moved to Nilgai night hunts. We take a deep dive into his journey as a night hunter and share his knowledge of thermal scopes, calibers, and bullets. In this episode, Manny and I talk about what is a "Trophy"? in this case, we keep the conversation about trophy whitetails. We start off discussing what the various scoring clubs consider a trophy score is, such as B&C, P&Y, and SCI. We all know that a trophy can maean many things to many different hunters, and I think we can all agree that it is a matter of perspective. We talk about how comercialized hunting has changed the game and in turn has changed the hunting stories of today. For me yes, score may set the perameters that classify what a tropy is, but I believe it is the story behind the harvest that is the true trophy.

In this epidsode, Manny and I talk about our favorite tool to use in the field, the On X Hunt App. It turns your phone into a legit handheld GPS Unit. We describe what it is, the cost, the many feartures and basics of how to use it. If you have not heard of On X, and you are in the outdoors, we both highly reccomend installing it on your phone. Although, it was mostly designed to be used in the public lands of the western states, we go over the many ways we use it here in South Texas where most our hunting is done on private lands. We also describe how we use it while out on the water.
In this episode, I recap the 2024 Total Archery Challenge held in San Antonio, TX. Once again, I shot some courses with The Salty Yak Outdoors crew. Had a blast we all made great shots and not so great shots. My good buddy Steve also joined me on the shoot and it was his first-time shooting TAC. Most of this episode is another great collaboration the Salty Yak Outdoors podcast. I was able to get with Steve after the fact, and get his take on his experience.

In this episode, we talk about the moment of truth in hunting, taking the shot. Whether with rifle or bow, there are some basic steps you want to take when you are about to squeeze the trigger or release an arrow. We talk best practices for shooting, getting steady, taking your time and squeezing. We also talk about the importance of spotting the shot or if possible, recording the shot. A special 75th Episode, deserves a special guest! I sat down with me grandmother, Juanita, a while back to get her story of how it once was and how our family got its start as a hunting family. Although not a hunter herself, was raised on game meat, learned how to cook it and has been around it all her life. She shares an interesting family history describing how our Ancestors hunted for necessity and then later evolved into the strong Escobar family tradition it is today. I am also joined by my cousins, Noe, Adrian, and Andrew who are also hunters and they ask their questions, as well. A little different episode, but I think it’s interesting to hear how it once was and how I would assume several families have a similar history. I wanted to get her story recorded as I believe it’s important to learn about our family’s heritage and legacy from our elders. If you are blessed to have grandparents in your life, make it a point to sit down with them and ask them share their story.

This year’s elk hunt is going to be a little different. I am designated caller and my cousin, Noe is the shooter and we are bringing along 2 guys that are new to the game. We have been planning this hunt since March then we got really serious once the tag was drawn in June. We have been meeting about every 2 weeks since and this is a summary of our elk planning meetings. We talk about a little about all of it, gear, tents, shelters, food and physical conditioning. Happy Father’s Day! Manny and I had been planning to get some youth on the podcast for a while now and it finally came together. Join us as we sit down with Manny and his boys and special guest Julius AKA “JuJu” and his dad, John. In this episode we talk about and how and where to fish saltwater without out a boat. Many folks, including myself, either don’t have the means or access to a boat, and that’s okay. You don’t need a boat to go saltwater fishing and catch fish. We talk about wading in from shore, fishing the surf, fishing from a pier, and fishing the jetties. All these areas are good for seeking saltwater game fish and good areas to take kids or beginner anglers. Manny also shares some knowledge about Frogging and gigging for flounder.

I had the honor to assist Manny in guiding some hunters on Nilgai hunt. Shout out to Gerry, Gary, and Brian. In this Episode, Manny and I talk about snake protection and snake safety in the field. If you hunt in South Texas, you know it is prime rattlesnake country. We discuss snake boots, chaps, gaiters and snake proof materials. We also touch on snake safety in general, things to consider prior to being in the field and what to do should you have an encounter. Manny shares a few encounters he’s had in field with snakes. One very real and unfortunate for one of his working dogs and a few close calls that were hair raising. If you’re hunting the brush country and currently don’t run any kind of snake protection, I ask you to have a listen and hopefully you will reconsider. Be safe out there!

Another collaboration with the Salty Yak Podcast, we recap our TX public land hunt on LANWR. Where we were bowhunting primarily targeting Nilgai Antelope. It’s that time of year when TPWD opens up applications for a variety of Texas Drawn Hunts all across the State. We talk about our top picks and why. It’s finally here, I am super excited to be hosting my first ever fishing tournament. It’s an online tournament managed thru the TourneyX website. It is a charity tournament benefitting a local nonprofit organization, called Bebo’s Angels, supporting the Autism community in the Rio Grande Valle of Texas. In this Episode, I tell a short story about how I became an advocate for Autism Awareness and then I get into all the details about the tournament. I give an overview how an online tournament works and describe the overall details of this tournament. I go over the categories and describe the rules in detail. Then of course I talk about the prizes. In a nutshell, it is open to all anglers fishing TX public saltwater. There are 3 categories to compete in, Top 3 Reds, Top 3 Trout, and Top Texas Slam. If you love to fish, you probably would agree that there is more to it than catching fish. There is something very therapeutic about fishing and being out on the water. In this Episode it was my pleasure to have local angler Ruben Sanchez, founder of 956 Kayak Anglers FB group and owner of Battle Born Rods, on the podcast. Ruben’s story is a true success story, a veteran who needed to find a way to transition to civilian life. Like many he had some internal demons to deal with, for him it was a battle with alcohol. He found an outlet that changed his life, and that outlet was fishing! More specifically kayak fishing. For those of us who grew up fishing we sometimes take fishing for granted, because its something we’ve always known. Ruben did not grow up fishing, but he found such a passion for it that it became “therapy on the water”, for him. Join me as we talk about kayak fishing, how he got into it, how it changed his life and how it led him to grow a kayak fishing community and eventually start his own business, in building fishing rods.

In this episode, I recap my 2021-2022 Deer Season here in deep South Texas. I hunted with my bow all season and as expected I had some lessons learned. I recap the multiple encounters I had this season including having a buck as close as 5 yards, but could not get it done. I talk about what went wrong with each of my setups and what finally went right when I arrowed my best buck to date with a bow. Bow hunting is a game of “at bats” and this season I had my share of opportunities. In the end patience and persistence paid off.
In this episode I continue my conversation Ethan Walz from New Divide Outdoors, about his DIY Alaskan Moose drift hunt. Calling all fellow hunters: What does Deer Camp or “Campo” mean to you? In this special episode I sit down with my Dad, Ramiro Escobar, Jr. to reminisce about the good old days at our deer camp. We discuss what deer camp was about for us. We were blessed to have lots of family around deer camp, cousins, uncles, and especially my grandfather, Ramiro Escobar, Sr. He enjoyed deer camp so much he wrote a song about, called “Los Cazadores”, and is played at the end of the podcast. Last year I overhauled my archery setup with heavier high FOC arrows and an unconventional new sight. In this episode I discussed what I had before, what I changed and why. I also explain the “high Front of Center” (FOC) concept with more weight upfront. I discuss the EZ V bow sight and how its revolutionary design makes sense specifically for hunting. I also talk about the performance of my new setup this past season on the animals I was fortunate to take with my bow. Heavy arrows with high FOC are basically “hand loaded” arrows and are quickly gaining popularity in the archery hunting industry and if you been thinking about making the change, I highly recommend it. In this episode I’m joined by Imer Delagarza, Wildlife Biologist working for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, (FWS) Wildlife. He is the biologist responsible for the oversight of the multiple tracts of land that make up the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. Imer educates us on the role is of US FWS; what a National Wildlife Refuge is; and the hunting opportunities that are offered. We discuss the various opportunities to hunt white-tailed deer, including success rates and get some interesting facts about the highly elusive and much sought after, Nilgai Antelope. This episode is a different kind of podcast. In this episode I take the listener with me on an audio experience of my 2019 Archery Deer hunt on the Teniente tract of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge. This is a Texas Public Land Hunt permit that I drew thru the TPWD Public Hunt Draw system. Through periodic audio recordings during my 4 day hunt you will hear me go thru my thought processes as I am hunting in the field in pursuit of whitetail deer with bow and arrow. Oh and this particular hunt permit also allows for he harvesting of unlimited Nilgai antelope and wild hogs. Follow along with me as I describe various setups in the field and employ various strategies including playing the wind, being mobile and rattling. It turned out to be a challenging hunt for a variety of reasons, and unfortunately, I was not successful at harvesting an animal but still a fun and had an enjoyable experience.

It’s September in Texas and that means Dove season is here! In this episode I talk about my love of dove hunting. It’s a great way to get outdoors with friends and family and maybe bring somebody new to hunting. I also share some of my tips and tactics for being successful in the field. This is part two about the little-known Public hunting opportunities in Texas. In this episode I share my experiences hunting on various public lands that I have hunted in North and South-Central Texas. In this episode I have my very first interview on the podcast with a very special guest, life long mentor, teacher, and hero of the outdoors and in life. My father, Ramiro Escobar Jr. Recorded shortly after Father's Day, what better way to celebrate than to take a trip down memory lane. Specifically, we recall and compare my earliest memories of my Dad taking me hunting and exposing me to the outdoors. We talk about how it shaped me as young hunter as I learned lessons of value and respect for the game we pursue. Join me as we talk about some fun times at deer camp. Being born into a hunting and fishing family I recently wondered where it all started. As this is my first episode, I give a brief background about myself and where I want the show to go in the future. Then getting into the topic, I briefly summarize the history of hunting in my family and I found some interesting stories about how and the reasons my ancestors came to be hunters of wild game. My hope to inspire others to research their own Hunting Ancestry.
