September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, a time when I look back and reflect with much gratitude on the experience I had over 20 years ago. As I say on the show, there is someone on the other side of your story, so I wanted to end the month sharing my Thyroid Cancer story with you.
Around 76% of Black people are likely to be diagnosed with local thyroid cancer compared to 68% of White people. The 5-year relative survival rate is almost 100% for localized papillary, follicular, and medullary thyroid cancers. For localized anaplastic thyroid cancer, the 5-year relative survival rate is 39%.
Family, I hope that by sharing my story, you will a bit of draw hope, inspiration to face whatever obstacle comes your way.

Safe Black Space Community Healing Circles started in April 2018 in response to increased racial tensions and trauma after the killing of Stephon Clark, an unarmed 22 year old Black man, by the Sacramento Police. It was meant to provide a chance for Black people to deal with the rage, shock, fear, and sadness that so many were (and are) feeling.
Show guests Dr. Kristee Haggins, founder of Safe Black Space and board member Dr. Jacquelyn Ollison stop by the Full Circle studio to discuss their upcoming 4 year anniversary celebration, black fatigue, mental health resources in Sacramento, the effects of Covid on our mental health and the distinguished honor of receiving a McArthur Grant.

So happy to share this episode with you family; I had a very thoughtful and poignant conversation with Dr. Shacunda Rodgers, licensed psychotherapist and founder of Melanin Meets Mindfulness was one of a kind. Dr. Rodgers gave us the definition of mindfulness and shared techniques on how to begin incorporating mindfulness into our daily lives. It is not as hard as you think. We are living in a time where there is a sharp increase of depression, anxiety, social pressures, racial injustice and more. It is definitely taking a toll on society in general and on black women in particular. Melanin Meets Mindfulness is a place for African American women tending their souls while living each moment with intention & purpose. So, grab your favorite beverage, settle in and peep this episode. I promise you will want to hear it more than once!

We all have a story and although we're the ones who experienced it, our story is not solely for us; it is to share so that others may gain insight and maybe a bit of hope to carry on. Unfortunately, many never find the courage to tell their story often negating its importance or feeling unworthy and that no one is interested in hearing what we have to say. If that is you or someone you know, then this is the episode that may help you find that bit of strength and self-love to stop hiding behind fear. My conversation with international speaker and women’s leadership consultant Ilesha “Coco” Graham was absolutely inspiring and is worth a listen. We discussed the importance of telling your story, recognizing and overcoming fear and Imposter Syndrome and getting out of your own way to do the thing you were called to do.

Oooooh Family! I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with the amazing Dr. Stacey Ault. Dr. Ault’s work is centered in Critical Post Traumatic Growth, a theory which recognizes that many individuals are not only able to survive trauma, but report positive changes in their life in spite of (and sometimes because of) traumatic experiences.
Listen as this UK native shares her experience arriving in the United States as a teen, racism and educational prejudice, unhealthy relationships and forging her way through difficult circumstances to become Assistant Professor at CSU, Sacramento, Founder/CEO of The Race and Gender Equity (RAGE) Project , mother of 6 and a fierce advocate of black womxn and youth.

Hear my conversation with Kimberly Wilkerson, pre-med student at UC Riverside School of Medicine. Kim is part of the Future Physician Leaders program. She and her team are working on a community health project determined to raise awareness about postpartum mental health in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. I love to meet young people who are passionate about something. Saturday’s Full Circle featured a conversation with Anaya Williamson and Gabriela Gomez, seniors at Franklin High School and the team behind the COVID 19 STEM fair, an online science fair designed to counteract the lack of academic activities during the global pandemic. These young ladies wanted a way to help kids further their knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) through project based learning.
Any student that resides within Sacramento and Yolo Counties and is in grades 6 - 12 can enter. Grab your children and hear how they can participate in the fair. Submissions are due August 10th.
