If you’re suffering from pesky pregnancy symptoms, try these drug-free methods for pregnancy symptom relief.Pregnancy symptoms like nausea, headaches, hemorrhoids, constipation and heartburn are common — and they can put a real damper on your excitement about having a baby. Luckily, there are safe and natural solutions that can help. Try a few; you might just find one that works for you. And just remember: While all of the following are considered safe during pregnancy, be sure to check with your doctor first (some supplements and herbs aren't safe when you're expecting)
Morning sicknessRoughly three in four pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (a.k.a., morning sickness), so if you're suffering from it, you're definitely not alone. The good news is, for the vast majority of women, symptoms typically ease up by the start of the second trimester. In the meantime, a few natural remedies have been shown to help — experiment with a few until you find what works for you:* Eat smart. What and when you eat can go a long way. So in addition to avoiding large meals and snacks, opt for bland, easy-to-digest foods; pair protein- and nutrient-rich options (like a glass of warm milk, a cheese stick or a cup of yogurt) with carbohydrates (like crackers or toast). Also try to avoid spicy, high-fat or salty fare. * Drink up. Stay hydrated by drinking between meals rather than while you eat to help prevent your stomach from getting too full. Try ice-cold water, sparkling water, seltzer, ginger ale, ginger beer or ginger tea. * Suck on sour or peppermint candy. These flavors may help reduce nausea symptoms. * Stock up on ginger. The gingerol in ginger contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help neutralize stomach acids. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends nauseated moms-to-be try ginger ale made with real ginger, ginger tea made from fresh grated ginger, ginger capsules and ginger candies to ease discomfort. You can also grate fresh ginger into your meals, soups and salad dressings; eat crystallized ginger; or brew fresh ginger shavings in hot water for a tummy-settling tea. * Consider vitamin B6. It's already in your prenatal vitamin (one more reason to pop it), but ask your doctor about taking an additional supplement or switching prenatals to one with a higher dose, since B6 has also been shown to reduce early-pregnancy nausea (usually in combination with the antihistamine doxylamine). * Try Sea-Bands or Psi wristbands. Some moms swear by them; they're available at most drug stores and work by stimulating acupressure points to reduce nausea. * See a prenatal acupuncturist. Acupuncture has been shown to elevate your mood, banish headaches and back pain and give you an energy boost. Just be sure to see a practitioner trained for to treat expecting women, since some pressure points (especially on the feet) can cause uterine contractions and induce labor. * Give aromatherapy a go. Taste is influenced by smell, so you might find that pregnancy-safe scents like mint, lemon and ginger — which have been shown to ease symptoms when eaten — can be effective when sniffed, too. * Clear your mind. Reduce stress by practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation or prenatal yoga.

If none of these remedies work, don't hesitate to talk to your doctor — there are safe medications she can recommend to help ease your symptoms. In more severe cases, he may admit you to the hospital for treatment with intravenous fluids.Hemorrhoids and constipationSwollen veins in the anus or rectum are an all-too-common pregnancy woe, especially during the third trimester, when your expanding uterus puts increased pressure on your pelvis. It's also common for expectant mothers to experience some constipation, which can cause or worsen hemorrhoids due to straining during bowel movements. If you do get hemorrhoids, these natural remedies can help:* Chow down on fiber. One way to prevent hemorrhoids from developing in the first place is to keep things moving by getting fiber into your diet. Good sources of fiber include fruits and veggies, flaxseeds, prune juice, chia seeds, whole grains and beans. * Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps keep things moving. * Soak up. Sit in a warm tub for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day. Or try a sitz bath: Available at most pharmacies, it's designed to be positioned over the toilet and may be easier for you to manage than getting in and out of a tub. * Keep toiletries simple. Opt for plain, moistened toilet paper that doesn't contain dye or fragrance. * Cool it off. Witch hazel wipes (you can find them at the pharmacy) can bring cooling relief. Or apply a cold compress or an ice pack. * Sit on a donut-shaped pillow. It can help ease pressure on the rectal area. * Do your Kegels. Kegels aren't only good for your perineal floor, helping prevent incontinence and improve sex — they also increase circulation to the area affected by hemorrhoids.

Although none of the above will actually cure the problem, they can help alleviate your discomfort — if not, ask your doctor before using any medication. Fortunately, hemorrhoids usually go away on their own after delivery.HeadachesAs with most pregnancy symptoms, pregnancy headaches usually result from hormonal changes; fatigue and blood-sugar swings can play a role as well. That means the best tactic to avoid getting one is to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day, get enough rest and, of course, avoid any known headache triggers. When you do come down with a headache, try these natural remedies to ease the pain:* Chill out. Lie down and place a cool compress on your forehead. * Get a rubdown. Ask your partner or a friend for a shoulder and neck massage. * Practice relaxation techniques. Deep breathing, yoga or meditation can sometimes help. * Try acupuncture. Research has shown that getting acupuncture during pregnancy eases headaches; women who received it also relied less on medication.

If you develop a severe headache or one that persists for more than two or three hours, be sure to contact your doctor, as it may be a sign of a pregnancy complication.HeartburnCountless pregnant women experience a burning sensation in the throat and chest that results from stomach acid getting pushed in the wrong direction by the ever-growing uterus. Try these natural remedies to help improve heartburn:* Avoid heartburn triggers at mealtime. Consider passing on carbonated drinks and sparkling water, and avoid spicy, greasy or citrusy foods. Instead of big meals, try to eat a few smaller snack-sized portions throughout the day. * Chew sugarless gum. It can stimulate the saliva for an acid-neutralizing effect (just stay away from peppermint, since it's highly acidic). * Sip a soothing drink. Try adding a tablespoon of honey to a glass of warm milk * Sleep soundly. Wait as much time as possible before lying down after a meal, and elevate your head while sleeping.

We've done the legwork for you and here they are: the 45 best health tips. Give yourself a boost. We've done the legwork for you and here they are: the 45 best health tips. Make that 46 - taking the time to read this tops the list.

1. Copy your kitty: Learn to do stretching exercises when you wake up. It boosts circulation and digestion, and eases back pain.2. Don’t skip breakfast. Studies show that eating a proper breakfast is one of the most positive things you can do if you are trying to lose weight. Breakfast skippers tend to gain weight. A balanced breakfast includes fresh fruit or fruit juice, a high-fibre breakfast cereal, low-fat milk or yoghurt, wholewheat toast, and a boiled egg.3. Brush up on hygiene. Many people don't know how to brush their teethproperly. Improper brushing can cause as much damage to the teeth and gums as not brushing at all. Lots of people don’t brush for long enough, don’t floss and don’t see a dentist regularly. Hold your toothbrush in the same way that would hold a pencil, and brush for at least two minutes.

This includes brushing the teeth, the junction of the teeth and gums, the tongue and the roof of the mouth. And you don't need a fancy, angled toothbrush – just a sturdy, soft-bristled one that you replace each month.4. Neurobics for your mind. Get your brain fizzing with energy. American researchers coined the term ‘neurobics’ for tasks which activate the brain's own biochemical pathways and to bring new pathways online that can help to strengthen or preserve brain circuits.

Brush your teeth with your ‘other’ hand, take a new route to work or choose your clothes based on sense of touch rather than sight. People with mental agility tend to have lower rates of Alzheimer's disease and age-related mental decline.5. Get what you give! Always giving and never taking? This is the short road to compassion fatigue. Give to yourself and receive from others, otherwise you’ll get to a point where you have nothing left to give. And hey, if you can’t receive from others, how can you expect them to receive from you?

Read: Mind aerobics6. Get spiritual. A study conducted by the formidably sober and scientific Harvard University found that patients who were prayed for recovered quicker than those who weren’t, even if they weren’t aware of the prayer.7. Get smelly. Garlic, onions, spring onions and leeks all contain stuff that’s good for you. A study at the Child’s Health Institute in Cape Town found that eating raw garlic helped fight serious childhood infections. Heat destroys these properties, so eat yours raw, wash it down with fruit juice or, if you’re a sissy, have it in tablet form.8. Knock one back. A glass of red wine a day is good for you. A number of studies have found this, but a recent one found that the polyphenols (a type of antioxidant) in green tea, red wine and olives may also help protect you against breast cancer. It’s thought that the antioxidants help protect you from environmental carcinogens such as passive tobacco smoke.9. Bone up daily. Get your daily calcium by popping a tab, chugging milk or eating yoghurt. It’ll keep your bones strong. Remember that your bone density declines after the age of 30. You need at least 200 milligrams daily, which you should combine with magnesium, or it simply won’t be absorbed.10. Berries for your belly. Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries contain plant nutrients known as anthocyanidins, which are powerful antioxidants. Blueberries rival grapes in concentrations of resveratrol – the antioxidant compound found in red wine that has assumed near mythological proportions. Resveratrol is believed to help protect against heart disease and cancer.11. Curry favour. Hot, spicy foods containing chillies or cayenne pepper trigger endorphins, the feel-good hormones. Endorphins have a powerful, almost narcotic, effect and make you feel good after exercising. But go easy on the lamb, pork and mutton and the high-fat, creamy dishes served in many Indian restaurants.12. Cut out herbs before ops. Some herbal supplements – from the popular St John's Wort and ginkgo biloba to garlic, ginger, ginseng and feverfew – can cause increased bleeding during surgery, warn surgeons. It may be wise to stop taking all medication, including herbal supplements, at least two weeks before surgery, and inform your surgeon about your herbal use.13. I say tomato. Tomato is a superstar in the fruit and veggie pantheon. Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful cancer fighter. They’re also rich in vitamin C. The good news is that cooked tomatoes are also nutritious, so use them in pasta, soups and casseroles, as well as in salads.

The British Thoracic Society says that tomatoes and apples can reduce your risk of asthmaand chronic lung diseases. Both contain the antioxidant quercetin. To enjoy the benefits, eat five apples a week or a tomato every other day.14. Eat your stress away. Prevent low blood sugar as it stresses you out. Eat regular and small healthy meals and keep fruit and veggies handy. Herbal teas will also soothe your frazzled nerves.

Eating unrefined carbohydrates, nuts and bananas boosts the formation of serotonin, another feel-good drug. Small amounts of protein containing the amino acid tryptamine can give you a boost when stress tires you out.15. Load up on vitamin C.We need at least 90 mg of vitamin C per day and the best way to get this is by eating at least five servings of fresh fruit and vegetables every day. So hit the oranges and guavas!16. No folly in folic acid. Folic acid should be taken regularly by all pregnant mums and people with a low immunity to disease. Folic acid prevents spina bifida in unborn babies and can play a role in cancer prevention. It is found in green leafy vegetables, liver, fruit and bran.17. A for Away. This vitamin, and beta carotene, help to boost immunity against disease. It also assists in the healing process of diseases such as measles and is recommended by the WHO. Good natural sources of vitamin A are kidneys, liver, dairy products, green and yellow vegetables, pawpaw, mangoes, chilli pepper, red sorrel and red palm oil.18. Pure water. Don’t have soft drinks or energy drinks while you're exercising. Stay properly hydrated by drinking enough water during your workout (just don't overdo things, as drinking too much water can also be dangerous).

While you might need energy drinks for long-distance running, in shorter exercise sessions in the gym, your body will burn the glucose from the soft drink first, before starting to burn body fat. Same goes for eating sweets.19. GI, Jane. Carbohydrates with a high glycaemic index, such as bread, sugar, honey and grain-based food will give instant energy and accelerate your metabolism. If you’re trying to burn fat, stick to beans, rice, pasta, lentils, peas, soya beans and oat bran, all of which have a low GI count.20. Mindful living. You've probably heard the old adage that life's too short to stuff a mushroom. But perhaps you should consider the opposite: that life's simply too short NOT to focus on the simple tasks. By slowing down and concentrating on basic things, you'll clear your mind of everything that worries you.
Really concentrate on sensations and experiences again: observe the rough texture of a strawberry's skin as you touch it, and taste the sweet-sour juice as you bite into the fruit; when your partner strokes your hand, pay careful attention to the sensation on your skin; and learn to really focus on simple tasks while doing them, whether it's flowering plants or ironing your clothes.21. The secret of stretching. When you stretch, ease your body into position until you feel the stretch and hold it for about 25 seconds. Breathe deeply to help your body move oxygen-rich blood to those sore muscles. Don't bounce or force yourself into an uncomfortable position.22. Do your weights workout first. Experts say weight training should be done first, because it's a higher intensity exercise compared to cardio. Your body is better able to handle weight training early in the workout because you're fresh and you have the energy you need to work it.

Conversely, cardiovascular exercise should be the last thing you do at the gym, because it helps your body recover by increasing blood flow to the muscles, and flushing out lactic acid, which builds up in the muscles while you're weight training. It’s the lactic acid that makes your muscles feel stiff and sore.23. Burn fat during intervals. To improve your fitness quickly and lose weight, harness the joys of interval training. Set the treadmill or step machine on the interval programme, where your speed and workload varies from minute to minute. Build up gradually, every minute and return to the starting speed. Repeat this routine. Not only will it be less monotonous, but you can train for a shorter time and achieve greater results.24. Your dirtiest foot forward. If your ankles, knees, and hips ache from running on pavement, head for the dirt. Soft trails or graded roads are a lot easier on your joints than the hard stuff. Also, dirt surfaces tend to be uneven, forcing you to slow down a bit and focus on where to put your feet – great for agility and concentration.25. Burn the boredom, blast the lard. Rev up your metabolism by alternating your speed and intensity during aerobic workouts. Not only should you alternate your routine to prevent burnout or boredom, but to give your body a jolt.

If you normally walk at 6.5km/h on the treadmill or take 15 minutes to walk a km, up the pace by going at 8km/h for a minute or so during your workout. Do this every five minutes or so. Each time you work out, increase your bouts of speed in small increments.26. Cool off without a beer. Don’t eat carbohydrates for at least an hour after exercise. This will force your body to break down body fat, rather than using the food you ingest. Stick to fruit and fluids during that hour, but avoid beer.27. ‘Okay, now do 100 of those’. Instead of flailing away at gym, enlist the help – even temporarily – of a personal trainer. Make sure you learn to breathe properly and to do the exercises the right way. You’ll get more of a workout while spending less time at the gym.28. Stop fuming. Don’t smoke and if you smoke already, do everything in your power to quit. Don’t buy into that my-granny-smoked-and-lived-to-be-90 crud – not even the tobacco giants believe it. Apart from the well-known risks of heart disease and cancer, orthopaedic surgeons have found that smoking accelerates bone density loss and constricts blood flow. So you could live to be a 90-year-old amputee who smells of stale tobacco smoke. Unsexy.29. Ask about Mad Aunt Edith. Find out your family history. You need to know if there are any inherited diseases prowling your gene pool. According to the Mayo Clinic, USA, finding out what your grandparents died of can provide useful – even lifesaving – information about what’s in store for you. And be candid, not coy: 25% of the children of alcoholics become alcoholics themselves.30. Do self-checks. Do regular self-examinations of your breasts. Most partners are more than happy to help, not just because breast cancer is the most common cancer among SA women. The best time to examine your breasts is in the week after your period.31. My smear campaign. Have a pap smear once a year. Not on our list of favourite things, but it’s vital. Cervical cancer kills 200 000 women a year and it’s the most prevalent form of cancer among black women, affecting more than 30 percent.

But the chances of survival are nearly 100 percent if it’s detected early. Be particularly careful if you became sexually active at an early age, have had multiple sex partners or smoke.32. Understand hormones. Recent research suggests that short-term (less than five years) use of HRT is not associated with an increase in the risk of breast cancer, but that using it for more than ten years might be. Breast cancer is detected earlier in women using HRT, as they are more alert to the disease than other women.32. Beat the sneezes. There are more than 240 allergens, some rare and others very common. If you’re a sneezer due to pollen: close your car’s windows while driving, rather switch on the internal fan (drawing in air from the outside), and avoid being outdoors between 5am and 10 am when pollen counts are at their highest; stick to holidays in areas with low pollen counts, such as the seaside and stay away from freshly cut grass.33. Doggone. If you’re allergic to your cat, dog, budgie or pet piglet, stop suffering the ravages of animal dander: Install an air filter in your home.

Keep your pet outside as much as possible and brush him outside of the home to remove loose hair and other allergens. Better yet, ask someone else to do so.34. Asthma-friendly sports. Swimming is the most asthma-friendly sport of all, but cycling, canoeing, fishing, sailing and walking are also good, according to the experts.

Asthma need not hinder peak performance in sport. 1% of the US Olympic team were asthmatics – and between them they won 41 medals.35. Deep heat. Sun rays can burn even through thick glass, and under water. Up to 35% of UVB rays and 85% of UVA rays penetrate thick glass, while 50% of UVB rays and 75% of UVA rays penetrate a meter of water and wet cotton clothing.

Which means you’ll need sunscreen while driving your car on holiday, and water resistant block if you’re swimming.36. Fragrant ageing. Stay away from perfumed or flavoured suntan lotions which smell of coconut oil or orange if you want your skin to stay young. These lotions contain psoralen, which speeds up the ageing process. Rather use a fake-tan lotion. Avoid sun beds, which are as bad as the sun itself.37. Sunscreen can be a smokescreen. Sunscreen is unlikely to stop you from being sunburned, or to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. That’s because most people don’t apply it properly, and stay in the sun too long.

The solution? Slather on sunscreen daily and reapply it often, especially if you’ve been in the water. How much? At least enough to fill a shot glass.38. Laugh and cry. Having a good sob is reputed to be good for you. So is laughter, which has been shown to help heal bodies, as well as broken hearts. Studies in Japan indicate that laughter boosts the immune system and helps the body shake off allergic reactions.39. It ain’t over till it’s over. End relationships that no longer work for you, as you could be spending time in a dead end. Rather head for more meaningful things. You could be missing opportunities while you’re stuck in a meaningless rut, trying to breathe life into something that is long gone.40. Strong people go for help. Ask for assistance. Gnashing your teeth in the dark will not get you extra brownie points. It is a sign of strength to ask for assistance and people will respect you for it. If there is a relationship problem, the one who refuses to go for help is usually the one with whom the problem lies to begin with.41. Save steamy scenes for the bedroom. Showering or bathing in water that’s too hot will dry out your skin and cause it to age prematurely. Warm water is much better.

Apply moisturiser while your skin is still damp – it’ll be absorbed more easily. Adding a little olive oil to your bath with help keep your skin moisturised too.42. Here’s the rub. Improve your circulation and help your lymph glands to drain by the way you towel off. Helping your lymph glands function can help prevent them becoming infected.

When drying off your limbs and torso, brush towards the groin on your legs and towards the armpits on your upper body. You can do the same during gentle massage with your partner.43. Sugar-coated. More than three million South Africans suffer from type 2 diabetes, and the incidence is increasing – with new patients getting younger. New studies show this type of diabetes is often part of a metabolic syndrome (X Syndrome), which includes high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease.

More than 80% of type 2 diabetics die of heart disease, so make sure you control your glucose levels, and watch your blood pressure and cholesterol counts.44. Relax, it’s only sex. Stress and sex make bad bedfellows, it seems. A US survey showed that stress, kids and work are main factors to dampen libido. With the advent of technology that allows us to work from home, the lines between our jobs and our personal lives have become blurred.

People work longer hours, commutes are longer and work pervades all aspects of our lives, including our sexual relationships. Put nooky and intimacy on the agenda, just like everything else.45. Good night, sweetheart. Rest heals the body and has been shown to lessen the risk of heart trouble and psychological problems.

Highlights* Walnuts are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids * Pistachios have a low glycemic index * Consumption of almonds has been linked to lower bad cholesterol levels

Nuts are great. Not only do they make for a crunchy and filling snack to chomp on between meals, they are also known to boost weight loss, brain power and heart health. These tiny wonders are rich sources of protein, fiber and several antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Most nuts contain Vitamin E, B2, folate and essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, copper and selenium. Some people may refrain from chomping on these healthy nuts thinking that they are high on calories but Consultant Nutritionist Dr. Rupali Datta clears the air. "Although nuts are fat dense, but have a very healthy lipid profile which is protective to our heart and health. Most fats in nuts are healthy monounsaturated fat and omega-3 fats," she says.
According to a study conducted by Harvard's T.H. Chan, School of Public Health, people who regularly eat nuts are less likely to have heart attacks or die from heart disease than those who rarely eat them. Here are five nuts that you must eat every day for a strong and healthy heart. 1. Walnuts: As a kid, your mother may have convinced you to eat these woody nuts daily for better memory and brain power. Turns out that walnut may be good for your heart too. It is probably the best nut for your heart health. The unsaturated fat found in walnuts - omega-3 fatty acids may help in preventing the development of erratic heart rhythms. Omega-3 fatty acids may also prevent blood clots. Moreover, walnut kernels are known to contain double the amount of antioxidant content than other nuts.(Also read: Can Eating Too Many Dry Fruits and Nuts Heat Up Your Body?)

2. Pistachios: A study carried out by Diabetes Foundation of India (DFI) and the National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation shows that pistachios have beneficial effects on glycemic and lipid parameters. Pistachios have a low glycemic index, are naturally cholesterol free, and are good sources of protein, fibre and antioxidants. These qualities make them great for preventing the risk of obesity and heart disease.

3. Almonds: Almond is one healthy nutty delight. Regular consumption of almonds has been linked to lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in innumerable studies. They are rich in monounsaturated fats, fibre, phytosterols, plant protein, tocopherol, arginine, magnesium, copper, manganese, calcium, and potassium makes them heart protective. Arginine, found in almonds, is a type of an amino acid that is required to make a molecule called nitric oxide which is known to relax constricted blood vessels and ease the flow of blood. Highlights* Maintaining healthy diet during pregnancy is very important * Missing out on any key nutrients may negatively affect baby's development * Poor diet during pregnancy may also result in birth complications

You may often find yourself in a tough spot when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet. With the easy access to junk food and our super busy lives, it is tough to strike a balance and maintain a healthy diet at all times. Now, imagine sharing the great responsibility for two people instead of one! Maintaining a healthy diet during pregnancy is very crucial. In this special phase, a woman's body needs additional nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Missing out on any key nutrients may negatively affect the baby's development. Poor eating habits during pregnancy may also result in birth complications.

Health Practitioner and Macobiotic Nutritionist Shilpa Arora ND tells us, "It is especially important to load up on nutrients and micro-nutrients during pregnancy like calcium and iron for strength and energy, vitamin D for bone health. Protein from lentils and eggs, and fibre you find in complex grains like ragi, jowar and amaranth, are also required. It is also important to nourish yourself with healthy fats you find in nuts and seeds. Loading up on fruits and a variety of veggies is especially important to derive micro-nutrients. Keep yourself hydrated at all times, be it with water, coconut water, or chaach." Consultant Nutritionist Dr. Rupali Dutta shares, "Starting with total calories, the first trimester does not require any additional intake and so the RDA of 1900 calories is adequate (for a sedentary woman). Highlights Period pain interferes with the daily activities of 1 in every 5 women * Extreme period pain can at times be as "bad as having a heart attack" * Here are 7 home remedies to ease menstrual pain and cramps Ugh! That time of the month again...*

Cramping, bloating, mood swings, lower back pain, headache, fatigue, heavy bleeding - “This ‘natural process’ is our passage into womanhood? Seriously? Why can’t I just be a boy!?” (Yes that’s me complaining every 28 days, while being curled up in bed with a hot water bottle).Did you know that dysmenorrhea i.e. extreme period pain interferes with the daily activities of 1 in every 5 women according to the American Academy of Family Physicians? John Guillebaud, Professor of Reproductive Health at University College London, says that research shows period pain can at times be as “bad as having a heart attack." Heart attack. Take a minute to think about that.“Men don’t get it and it hasn’t been given the centrality it should have. I do believe it’s something that should be taken care of, like anything else in medicine," John added. And I couldn't agree more.
To make sure you don't suffer every month and toss and turn in pain, we’ve spoken to experts and listed 7 effective home remedies to ease period pain and even prevent menstrual cramps. (You're welcome!)

  1. Massage with Sesame Oil:Sesame oil is traditionally used for abhyanga i.e. the daily Ayurvedic self-massage. It is rich in linoleic acid, and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Dr. Malini Sharma, Ayurveda Expert, Holy Healthcare Clinic says, "You can use sesame oil and massage it on your lower abdomen while you’re menstruating. It helps a lot."

  2. Fenugreek Seeds: Dr. Ashutosh Gautam, Clinical Operations and Coordination Manager at Baidyanath says, “You can reduce period pain with the help of fenugreek seeds. All you need to do is soak it in water for 12 hours, and then drink up."

  3. Heat: “Applying heat on the lower abdomen helps relax the contracting muscles in the uterus," says Dr. Manoj K. Ahuja, Fortis Hospital. A hot water bottle always does the trick for me, but you can use over-the-counter heating pads or patches for comfort as well. Dr. Ritika Samaddar, Max Super Speciality Hospital says, “Sipping on warm fluids or taking a hot shower also helps to relieve pain and make you feel more relaxed."

  4. Exercise: This may seem crazy to you, considering you can barely move (let alone brisk walk) when you’re dying in pain. But exercising increases circulation to the pelvic region and releases endorphins to counteract the prostaglandins (hormone-like substances that cause the uterine muscles to contract during menstruation). Yogi Anoop, MediYoga suggests, “Do yoga asanas such as pranayama and shavasana (the corpse pose) while menstruating, as it eases pain and helps the body to relax. It also helps if you lie on your back with your knees bent." Dr. Ritika Samaddar, Max Super Speciality Hospital says, “It is important to exercise regularly for your overall health, but it is especially important if you're prone to painful menstrual cramps."

  5. Ginger and Black Pepper Tea: Dr. Malini Sharma, Ayurveda Expert says “Make herbal tea using dried ginger and black pepper. Add a little sugar for taste, but avoid milk." Ginger can effectively reduce period pain, as it plays a key role in lowering the levels of prostaglandins. As an added bonus, it also helps make irregular periods regular and fights fatigue associated with premenstrual syndrome.

  6. Cumin Seeds: “You can make a herbal tea out of cumin seeds to reduce period pain," suggests Dr. Ashutosh Gautam, Baidyanath. Cumin has a relaxing effect, and its anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties are useful for for getting rid of menstrual cramps.

  7. Chamomile Tea: According to a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Chemistry, Chamomile tea has pain-relieving properties. It helps relax the uterus and decrease the production of prostaglandins, thus reducing period pain.

Highlights* The tannic acid in tea will shrink swelling around the eye * Fennel seeds contain a carminative compound that disperses gas * Have some flaxseeds with warm water to relieve constipation

If you ever have a conversation with your grand mother, she'll tell you that back in the day they mostly relied on natural home remedies to treat almost every ailment. A lot may have changed now, but granny's treasure trove of home remedies is still as effective as it used to be. Time to go back to your roots and rediscover all the gems on your kitchen shelf that have innumerable health benefits. Nature offers the best medicines for most ailments, all we have to do is look closely and remember the goodness of some commonly available ingredients. Let's look at few home remedies that can help everyday problems that we may face.

  1. Diarrhea: Boil brown or white rice in twice the amount of water you would normally use, then strain. Once the water is cool, drink it. This water contains electrolytes that help ease diarrhea.

  2. Back Pain: White willow is considered as a natural alternative to Aspirin because it contains salicin, a pain reliving component.

  3. Gout: Cherries contain compounds that block uric acid and calm inflammation. I advise people suffering from gout to eat a bowl of cherries daily.

  4. Sty: Moisten black tea with warm or cold water, and apply on your eyelid. The tannic acid in tea will shrink swelling around the eye.

  1. Osteoarthritis: Studies show that curcumin found in turmeric is extremely effective to reduce joint pain and swelling in people with osteoarthritis

  2. Hot flashes: Studies show that sage reduces the frequency of hot flashes. Make a tea of fresh or dried sage, strain cool and drink.

  3. Muscle cramps: Athletes can prevent muscle cramps by drinking lime juice with black salt as a electrolyte imbalance sparks muscle cramps, and the juice helps to restore sodium potassium with a boost of Vitamin C.

  4. Gas:Fennel seeds contain a carminative compound that disperses gas from the intestinal tract. Chew and swallow half a tea spoon of seeds at the end of meals.

  1. Arthritis Pain: Natural gelatin found in chicken soup contains collagen that helps relieve joint pain and inflammation.

  2. Dry eyes: Take 1 or 2 tea spoons of pure flax seeds oil each day. The anti-inflammatory properties of omega 3 fatty acids reduce the dryness of the eyes.

11 Acne: Apple cider vinegar works as an astringent to dry up excess oil. Use a ratio of 1 part of vinegar to 3 parts of water. Dip cotton ball into the mix and apply it to the blemish.

Apple cider vinegar is the new superfood.

  1. Diabetes: Study shows that the gurmar plant possesses anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also used to facilitate weight loss.

  2. Asthma: Heat some sesame seed oil and gently massage it on the chest and upper back. Do it several times a day till symptoms subside.

  3. Weak bones: Chia seeds contain 4 times more absorbable calcium than milk. Chia seeds are powerhouses of nutrients. Add them to smoothies, curd or dal for this boost.

  4. Constipation: A tablespoon of flaxseeds (freshly ground) to be eaten at bed time with warm water helps relive constipation.

  1. Piles: The reason for piles is constipation and to treat that triphla should be taken in hot water at bed time to prevent constipation and piles.

  2. Insomnia: Valerian root has been used for centuries for sleep disorders and anxiety. The root increases the GABA levels in the brain allowing users to sleep easily.

  3. Common cold: For acute bronchitis a herb called echinacea enhances immune function and dries up mucus. It also reduces the duration and severity of the cold.

19.Dandruff: Lemon grass oil contains high levels of anti- microbial compounds called Geranol that fights fungus that causes dandruff. This magical treatment can be used just twice to see results.

The next time you need a cure for any of these ailments, turn to nature and try these home remedies. However, if you are suffering from a serious medical condition you must consult a doctor too.

Pregnancy and weight gain go hand in hand. But to ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby, you must not gain excessive weight.Being overweight before pregnancy or gaining excessive weight during pregnancy increases the risk of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and other complications related to pregnancy, including preeclampsia and the need for a cesarean section, according to a 2015 study published in Geburtshilfe Frauenheilkunde. The amount of weight you should gain during pregnancy is based on several factors, including pre-pregnancy weight and body mass index (BMI). Your health status and your baby’s health also play a key role. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends following the weight gain guidelines for pregnant women.A 2008 study published in Reviews in Obstetrics & Gynecology reports that not only does maternal obesity affect the woman, it also impacts the health of the child.A mother being overweight or obese is also associated with an increased risk of infant mortality, due to increased mortality risk in full-term births and an increased prevalence of preterm births, according to a 2014 study published in BMJ.A 2017 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that the heavier mothers were when they entered pregnancy, the higher the risk of behavior problems for their sons. However, it did not show the same effects in girls.Looking at these studies, it becomes obvious that gaining too much weight during pregnancy should be avoided. Here are some of the ways to gain weight in a healthy way during pregnancy.1. Lose Weight before Planning Your PregnancyTake steps to ensure you’re at a healthy weight before you become pregnant. This will make it easier for you to maintain a healthy weight throughout the pregnancy.Obese women who are pregnant are at a higher risk of gestational diabetes, hypertension, preeclampsia, long labor, labor interventions, miscarriage and ultrasound test difficulties.Obesity can also cause macrosomia, which means having too large of a baby. This increases the chance of a C-section.If you are ready to have a child, consider making a preconception appointment. Your doctor can help you figure out your current BMI and suggest how much weight you may need to lose before getting pregnant. Also, your doctor may recommend the best ways to lose weight.2. Consult a Doctor and NutritionistAs soon as you have conceived, it is time to see a doctor as well as a nutritionist. Your doctor knows your medical history and can recommend how much weight you need to lose or gain.Your doctor can also refer you to a registered nutritionist, who can plan out a sensible diet plan that will help you stay healthy during your pregnancy.A nutritionist will suggest the foods that you should eat as well as exercises or workouts that are safe for you and your baby. Before visiting a nutritionist, write down all the details regarding what you eat and drink and what type of exercise you do. This will be of immense help for any nutritionist.3. Do Light ExercisesDuring pregnancy, exercise is important. Moderate exercise can help burn excess calories and keep your weight in check.Walking or swimming are usually safe forms of exercise for pregnant women. Try to do 30 minutes of light exercise like walking or swimming three days a week.Regular exercise and keeping your body fit will also ensure that you have fewer aches and pains as you get to the end of the pregnancy.A 2013 study published in the Australian Journal of Primary Health reports that encouraging pregnant women to continue their pre-pregnancy walking level may be a relatively simple strategy to increase participation in physical activity. To stay motivated to exercise, make a walking date with another pregnant friend or your partner.
4. Don’t Eat for TwoDuring pregnancy, your focus should be on eating healthy rather that eating for two.Your body does not need that many extra calories a day to nourish your growing baby. You simply need 340 extra calories per day when you are in the second trimester and 450 extra calories per day when you are in your third trimester.A pregnant woman can fulfill the extra calorie requirement by drinking two glasses of milk (around 100 calories each) and eating one extra serving of whole grains (around 100 calories). You must also choose foods that pack a big nutritional punch and help you feel satisfied, such as nuts, raisins, cheese and crackers, dried fruit and yogurt. Also, focus on small, frequent meals that are high in lean proteins, fruits and vegetables. Eating a healthy snack every three hours should help you avoid overdoing it at mealtimes.5. Drink Plenty of WaterDrink plenty of water throughout the day to help your body flush out toxins and stay hydrated. In addition, adequate water intake increases the rate at which the body burns fat.Proper hydration is important for a healthy pregnancy.A 2012 study published in the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine reports that in pregnancies complicated by isolated oligohydramnios, hydration therapy significantly improves the quantity of amniotic fluid. It is recommended to drink 8 to 10 glasses of fluids a day. Do not substitute water with soft drinks and colas that contain calories. Eat more water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers and others. At the same time, avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, which can be bad for your unborn baby.6. Start CookingDuring pregnancy, you need to eat healthy. Hence, it is better to start cooking so that you know what you are eating and you do not have to worry about hidden ingredients when you eat out. When cooking at home, you have full control over the nutritional content and the healthfulness of the foods you eat. This also means you are providing healthy nutrition to your unborn baby.In addition, homemade food can prevent you from gaining excess weight, if you avoid deep-frying or pan-frying your food and opt for healthy cooking techniques like stir-frying, roasting, grilling, broiling and poaching.Use and prepare foods only with little salt, sugar and artificial sweeteners for added benefits.7. Get Proper SleepProper sleep and relaxation is important for a healthy pregnancy. In fact, quality sleep also plays an important role in promoting weight loss.Poor sleep impacts your hunger and fullness hormones, and even encourages late-night snacking.Get a good night’s sleep of 6 to 8 hours daily. The best way to do this is to stick to a schedule, going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day.Resources:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4596699/
