A practical discussion where two former therapists share what they learned professionally and experienced personally about the healing and restoration of our God-given glory
This week, Jake and Bob discuss the subtle ways the enemy gains influence in our lives through the interpretations, judgements, and conclusions we draw in the ordinary moments of everyday life. They explore how these footholds can gradually become strongholds, why fear and shame often lie beneath our attempts to protect ourselves, and how distorted images of God shape the way we see the world. No matter where you may find footholds in your life, there is hope. Through simple acts of trust each day, we can learn to let God become our true stronghold.

This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Andrew Laubacher, the Executive Director of Humanality, to explore how our digital world is reshaping our attention, attachments, and relationships. After stepping away from social media and smart phones to overcome addiction, Andrew realized that healing sometimes requires more than better habits, fasting, or more prayer—it requires recovering the way God created us to live and relate. Together, they discuss the false intimacy of online community, the loneliness epidemic, and why technology is never as neutral as we assume. Andrew also shares practical steps you can begin today to live intentionally with technology.

This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Fr. John Horn, co-founder of the Institute for Priestly Formation, to continue their series on confession. They explore how the sin of pride often hides beneath the surface of our spiritual lives and can even affect the way we approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation itself. Using the parable of the Prodigal Son, they also uncover how fear, shame, and self-reliance can keep us from fully receiving the Father's love. At its core, Confession is an encounter with a Father who rejoices over His children and allowing our hearts to receive this love leads us toward deeper healing and freedom

This week, Jake and Bob talk about the two Sacraments of Healing, Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick, and what they reveal about Christ as the physician of both soul and body. This week, Jake and Bob welcome Dr. John Bishop, founder of FORGE, to continue their series on healing in men. John shares his perspective on why so many men today lack a clear picture of what it means to be a good man. He begins with the story of Adam, uncovering God's original design for masculinity—one rooted in work, responsibility, and the courage to engage in the world and the people entrusted to him. From there, he describes the wounds men experience from Adam's fall: fear, shame, and the tendency for men to withdraw, hide, or dominate rather than love. Yet, with Jesus Christ as a model, whose life and sacrifice reveal the true strength of a man, they reflect on how men can recover a living image of faithful, engaged, and restored masculinity.

This week, Jake and Bob welcome John Edwards, a fellow guy in the pew, to share his raw and redemptive journey from addiction and secrecy to finding his identity in God. From outward success and hidden cocaine use to the devastating loss of his mother, John reveals how grief, shame, and a longing for affirmation shaped his choices—and nearly destroyed his marriage and family. He opens up about the masks he wore, the lies he believed about God as a harsh judge, and the panic attacks that finally exposed the prison he was living in. With honesty and courage, John recounts the night he chose confession over isolation, and how mercy began to break through years of self-reliance and despair. This week, Jake and Bob conclude their series on deliverance and healing by welcoming Fr. Boniface Hicks, OSB to the show. Boniface reframes spiritual warfare using the analogy of relationships and stories, and how our identities are shaped by our understanding of truth and love. This week, Jake and Bob welcome Dr. Sean Tobin, author and psychologist, to explore the reality of spiritual warfare and deliverance ministry. Dr. Sean reframes deliverance not as a battle to fear but as a process of centering our hearts in Christ. They discuss how fear, self-reliance, and isolation fragment the soul, why the simplicity of love and praise is more powerful than you think, and the proper balance between technique and communion. This week, Jake and Bob discuss the relationship between healing, deliverance, and spiritual warfare. They explore the nature of spiritual strongholds (patterns of thoughts or beliefs that oppose the reality of who God is) and why these strongholds often obstruct emotional and spiritual healing. Jake and Bob also nuance the distinction between ordinary and extraordinary experiences of grace and how the supernatural is hidden within the quiet or ordinary moments. This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Joey Pontarelli, the founder and president of the ministry “Restored”. After finding a lack of help after his parents’ divorce, Joey decided to begin ministry with “Restored” to offer practical guidance and support for teens and young adults from broken families. Jake, Bob, and Joey discuss the wounds that come from divorce, their personal experiences, and practical advice on how to respond to this woundedness.
Key Points * If there isn’t any transformation in the wounds, then the sins we fall into, as a remedy, make sense. They don’t work, but they make sense. * We often don’t want to face these wounds, so we try to outrun them. But we can’t outrun our wounds. We’re made for more than that. * The Lord understands why you struggle with each particular sin. It doesn’t surprise or scandalize Him. And He loves you where you are. * Divorce is a wound of broken love. So the medicine can only work when you reach the wound. Love is what heals. * Relationship with God is the primary healing element and agent. Give God your attention, quality time, and trust Him. * Consume great content that involves trauma and healing. Seek out coaching - a therapist, spiritual director, or mentor. Have a good community and deep relationships. * For a healthy marriage - spend time with a couple who has a healthy marriage. * The temptation in marriage is to harden your heart and to close yourself off. But instead, we are called to tenderness and vulnerability.

Jake & Bob are joined by Fr. Timothy Gallagher for a discussion on how discernment and healing go hand in hand. Fr. Tim is the author of the incredible book “The Discernment of Spirits” that teaches us how to utilize St. Ignatius’ rules of discernment. He shares the process of discernment while Jake & Bob combine his knowledge with their expertise on healing. The process of healing and discerning God’s will for us work beautifully together.
Key Points * Discerning what is from the voice of the Holy Spirit and what is from the voice of the evil one. * The rules of St. Ignatius are an invitation to hope. * “The more healing that can happen on both the physical and psychological levels, the harder the enemy’s task becomes.” -Fr. Tim * The first step in discernment is to notice any movements, thoughts or stirrings of the heart. Identify whether it is from the good spirit or the bad spirit and then take the appropriate action. If it is from the good spirit, take it in and be guided by it. If it is from the enemy, reject it. * The discernment process happens repeatedly throughout the healing process. It is continual and helps you know how to move forward. * Our parents/guardians are the first representatives of God to us. We may often hear God’s voice as our parent’s voices which can either be positive or negative. If we believe lies about ourselves from our parents, we need to work through those so that we don’t hear those lies coming from God’s voice in our hearts. We need to invite Jesus’ to speak His truth in our hearts. * In times of desolation, never make a change. * Renouncement prayer is a way to practically renounce lies and accept the opposing truths.

Jake and Bob continue their series on working through hopelessness to find hope. When we feel hopeless, we often avoid God because we feel ashamed, guilty or unloved. In these times we only see God as a judge, pointing out our failings. But God is also our Savior who loves us even in the places we feel unloveable. We can try to find hope through things or people but this will let us down. God is the only one who can provide us with the hope we desire. Our hosts walk us through how to find hope again through an Encounter with the God who loves us.
Key Points * Hopelessness closes our hearts to the Encounter with God. * When the sickness of our lives becomes evident to us, we often only see God as Judge and not as Savior. * Jesus loves us in the places we feel unloveable. * Healing is a real encounter that brings us into wholeness, truth and communion. * If you lose sight of the Savior, Christianity is meaningless. * When we put hope in things or people that aren’t God, they become idols, and idols will always disappoint us.

The season of Advent is a time of hope and waiting: preparing for the birth of Christ and welcoming Him into our hearts in a new way. But a season focused on hope can often reveal the places in our hearts that are hopeless. Jake and Bob kick off a new series on how to move from hopelessness to hope. They discuss how a lack of hope can often stem from a lack of trust, patience and intimacy with the Lord. Listen as they share some helpful shifts in mindset to grow in the virtue of hope this Advent season.
Key Quote “The person who loves intimacy with Jesus will get farther in the healing journey than the person who just wants to be healed.” -Jake Khym
Key Points * How the holidays and the Advent focus on hope can often reveal where we feel hopeless * We need to desire relationship with Jesus even more than the healing He can give us. He wants to give us good gifts but desires our hearts more than all. * A lack of hope can often come from a lack of intimacy and trust. * Trust is the currency in the economy of relationship. * “Gratitude is an antidote to hopelessness.” -Bob Schuchts

Forgiveness is not an easy topic. It’s intimately connected to our hurts and areas that need healing. But forgiveness is also misunderstood. Building off the previous series on right judgment, mercy and healing, Jake and Dr. Bob begin a two-part series on forgiveness, diving into the etymology of the word, addressing our misinterpretations, and challenging us to look at how Jesus models forgiveness. They look at how forgiveness is the perfect marriage between right judgment and mercy, and go deep into the Catechism to unpack the spiritual and human reality of this virtue. Be prepared to pause, rewind and listen to this episode again and again.
Key Quote:
It is there, in fact, "in the depths of the heart," that everything is bound and loosed. When we understand and exercise right judgement then we can offer and receive mercy, which leads to healing. Jake and Bob break down the role of mercy with helpful analogies and discussion to draw a more complete picture of healing. They also take a look at what happens when we get judgement wrong.
Key Quote:
Without the presence of the merciful Father, we are delivered up to our faults, without any possible remedy. There would be no forgiveness of error or sin. No place for weakness, frailty, or failure, all of which are nonetheless a part of our lives. - Fr. Jacques Philippe, Priestly Fatherhood

In this extended episode, Jake and Bob sit down with Christopher Dowling for a deeply nuanced conversation examining the the Catechism of the Catholic Church, ‘camps’ that exist around the Church’s teaching on homosexuality, and how we can love one another while fundamentally disagreeing on how to approach same-sex relationships. Christopher came out as gay in 2018 and is currently engaged to be married to another man. He and Bob know one another from their time in shared ministry, and for the first time revisit how the events of 2018 affected them individually. This is a powerful conversation that we hope is one small step towards healing and relationship as we respectfully dialogue about grief and hope, doubt and faith, sadness and love.

Jake and Bob sit down for an honest conversation with Hilde, a woman who would have once called herself a ‘gay Catholic.’ Hilde’s lifelong attraction to the truth made her feel intensely divided between the Catholic faith she was raised with and a lifestyle of same-sex relationships. Then, a spontaneous trip to Medjugorje changed everything. Now, Hilde defines herself more through her identity as a daughter of God than her sexual desires. Hilde’s unflinching retelling of her story is a beautiful example of how God always pursues us.

Jake and Bob begin a series on same-sex attraction with the desire to bring hope, clarity and understanding to this topic and the Church. Why this series? We have seen this topic impact many people who are trying to navigate this conversation well. As we move forward, we want to be sensitive and use great reverence toward the people that this directly affects, including our listeners. We believe that love and charity are essential in this discussion, as well as humility in the pursuit of truth. The depths of the human heart are holy ground.
Key Quote:
The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition. - CCC 2358

Jake and Bob conclude the series on Security, Maturity, Purity, by talking about Purity. The development of this area is about much more than sexuality. Purity begins when we orient ourselves towards love by both seeing God and seeing like God. This episode challenges us to see ourselves and others more through God’s eyes with the healing gaze of love.

Jake and Bob continue their series on Security, Maturity and Purity by looking at the difference between false maturity vs maturing into our true selves through yoking ourselves to Christ.
Guiding Quote:
The real Son of God is at your side. He is beginning to turn you into the same kind of thing as Himself. Lencioni is founder of the Table Group, a consulting firm which has helped businesses across the globe in their quest for organizational health. He is a practicing Catholic and a force behind the Amazing Parish project. It is an honor to welcome two incredible leaders onto the podcast today, Mother Superior Gloria Therese and Sr. Regina Marie of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. Several years ago, their community of Carmelite Sisters reached a crisis point. The Order had been founded during a period of religious persecution in Mexico and compounded by individual trauma they were collectively in need of deep healing. Mother Superior and Sr. Regina Marie discovered Dr. Bob’s ‘Healing the Whole Person’ and soon the entire Community had taken the program. Together, the Sisters recount this profound experience of rediscovering their stories and learning to trust that God can use our brokenness to minister to the world. Theirs is a story of hope and a picture of God’s deep desire for our wholeness. Guiding Quote:
I will lead the blind by a road they do not know, by paths they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I will not forsake them. - Isaiah 42:16

Today, we welcome Peter Herbeck from Renewal Ministries onto the show. Peter would describe his younger self as a troublemaker and rule breaker, acting out because of an alcoholic father. But, when his father miraculously and voluntarily turned himself in for treatment after his sister called on the family to pray, Peter was introduced to healing: clinically and through Christ. It was a step in the right direction, but his healing journey was far from over. Join our conversation as Peter shares how his understanding of ‘healing the whole person’ shifted in his fifties and how this has impacted his leadership forever.

Jake and Bob sit down for a practical and rich conversation with Jackie Mulligan, the Foundress and CEO of Reform Wellness, a functional and holistic wellness practice rooted in Christ. As a successful young woman, Jackie seemed like she had it all together while internally, her striving and performance-oriented attitude was steadily leading her to a place of dysregulation and illness. Jackie began her healing journey in the adoration chapel where she recognized her need to reform her life by placing Christ at the center of everything from her meals to movement to thought patterns. Now, Jackie is leading others to wholeness in Christ by addressing all aspects of their lives through her groundbreaking program: Reform Online. Space is still available in the Lent 2022 intake.

Jake and Bob continue their conversation with Christopher West. If you haven’t heard part one, click here to listen because it’s essential for understanding the content of today's episode.
Join Jake, Bob and Christopher as they take a deep ‘excavating’ look at the transformation and healing of identity through the power of an honest and loving spouse. Sexual healing is more than just the healing of sexual things, it’s a deeper healing of our identity as men and women made in the image of God. Overtime, within the safety of a loving marriage, each man has discovered areas of their hearts that are in need of redemption. Humility before God and our spouses, and a willingness to invite the Lord into our wounds leads to powerful healing and wholeness.

It’s a joy to welcome our dear friend and special guest, Sr. Miriam James Heidland, onto the podcast. Continuing the series on Sexual Healing, Sr. Miriam teaches us how to have a disposition of tenderness and reverence toward our own stories, what she calls holy ground. Jake, Bob and Sr. Miriam regularly work alongside each other leading healing events, so this conversation is familiar territory. We are grateful for her vulnerability. In this episode, Jake and Bob lay the groundwork for a new series on sexual healing. Sexual woundedness affects almost everyone on some level. Jake and Bob offer their professional perspective on healing in this important area and share why it's important to let the Holy Spirit lead us when it comes to addressing wounds. Please note: specific examples of trauma and disordered sexuality are discussed within this episode. Listen with discretion.
In this bonus episode in our series on Healing in Marriage, Jake and Dr. Bob are joined by Chris & Natalie Stefanick. Ten years into their marriage, the recognition of childhood abuse launched them into a challenging season of healing that ultimately demonstrates the power of God’s love, the grace of the sacrament of marriage and hope that healing from deep wounds is not only possible, but part of God’s desire for our restoration. Today, we welcome our first ever guest onto the show! Heather Khym joins us so that she and Jake can share the powerful story of how they found restoration in their marriage after Jake’s struggle with addiction came to light early in their marriage. This is a “must listen” conversation for married couples as Jake and Heather share from both the husband and wife’s perspective on dealing with tough issues and coming out stronger on the other side.
We all bring brokenness into marriage and by God’s grace, we also get to participate in our spouse's healing journey. In part three of the Healing in Marriage series based on Dr. Bob’s book, “Be Devoted,” Jake and Bob discuss how to restore trust in broken areas of a marriage. They give practicals on how to navigate this often difficult journey, and show us how reconciliation is possible for anyone who is willing.
Part 2 in our series on “Healing in Marriage” shines a light on healing and forgiveness, but getting to the good stuff often requires addressing things we’d rather ignore. Jake and Dr. Bob share thoughtfully how areas of immaturity, woundedness from our childhood and character weaknesses inevitably come to the surface in marriage. How we handle these moments for ourselves and with our spouse is crucial. Discover how to find healing as you learn to love your spouse (and yourself!) in your imperfections.
This week kicks off a new series on “Healing in Marriage.” If you’re struggling in marriage, you are not alone. How can you find healing in difficult situations with your spouse? This episode addresses the presence of conflict in marriage, and how to honor your spouse. Jake and Dr. Bob draw on stories from their marriages as well as experience from their practice in professional counseling to shed light on this reality in relationships.
Sexual intimacy is the final area covered in this series on unity in marriage, since this form of unity flows from all the others (Spiritual, Emotional, Companionship, Teamwork). In the episode, Jake and Dr. Bob share how sexual desire and self-gift are made to become integrated in marriage through the Holy Spirit, making a way for healing and deep intimacy.
Part four of the series on Unity in Marriage explores the joy of companionship and teamwork. Jake and Dr. Bob flesh out what it means to become one of mind and heart, and share personal examples of how they’ve had to tackle self-focus in order to move toward deeper connection through selflessness in their marriages. They also address the question, “How do we honor one another’s strengths and complement in a way that builds teamwork instead of moving in opposite directions?”
Jake & Dr. Bob discuss emotional intimacy in this next episode in their series on unity in marriage. Generally, this type of intimacy is more difficult for men, while it's one of the deepest desires of women. Our hosts share stories of how they have grown in emotional intimacy through their own marriages, and provide practical tips on how to develop deeper emotional intimacy in your own relationship.
Jake & Bob continue the series on unity in marriage by laying out the five pathways to marital communion. The first of these pillars is the spiritual connection to God and each other. This is the foundation for everything else in the marriage. You may have heard it suggested to pray together as a couple but didn’t try or gave up because it felt awkward. The hosts give practical tips on how to make the spiritual life a foundation without it being awkward. Be encouraged and challenged by this week’s episode.
This week kicks off a new series on finding unity in marriage. Jake and Bob will share what they’ve learned through their own marriages and their professional work with married couples. In this episode, they discuss how marriage is a union of two broken people, but by inviting in the love of God, growing together in unity is made possible. A couple can grow and heal together during the journey of their marriage. Our hosts set the stage for a great series and share tips that will help a marriage become stronger.
Jake and Bob finish up their series on the Healing of the Family by discussing sibling wounds. They frame the conversation around the Old Testament story of Joseph and his brothers. Whether sibling wounds were caused due to individual sins or inadvertently, the hosts share insight for finding healing. This episode is filled with practical tips for how to navigate the healing process in general and specifically for sibling wounds.
Jake and Bob continue their series on the Healing of the Family and dive into marriage/family wounds. The family is the primary way children learn how to give and receive love, treat other people, & find their identity. As adults, we can look back at our upbringing and see how we were formed in healthy ways and ways that caused us to struggle. Jake and Bob offer suggestions on how to find healing from our family/marriage trauma and how our families can create a loving culture where our children can thrive.
Jake and Bob continue their series on the Healing of the Family. Last week, they started with father wounds and this week they dive deep into the topic of mother wounds. The connection that children have with their mother is a powerful one that can lead to light and joy or it can lead to hurt. Both hosts not only share their expertise but also their personal stories about some mother wounds and how they have been healed. Be sure to tune in next time for the third episode in the series regarding marriage wounds.
Dr. Bob and Jake discuss the power of a father’s love and his capacity to wound. Fathers plant deep seeds in their children’s hearts with what they said or didn’t say and what they did or didn’t do. The restoration of wounds from our fathers is life-changing.
After recapping how Peter’s pride, shame, and false self have been stripped away, Dr. Bob and Jake discuss the amazing transformation in Peter after his healing encounter with Jesus and being filled with the Holy Spirit. The series concludes with reflections on how each of us can find ourselves in Peter’s story and experience a similar transformation.
After explaining the meaning and power of shame, Dr. Bob and Jake reflect on the restorative encounter between Jesus and Peter on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. We can all resonate with Peter’s experience of denying Jesus and the resulting shame. Our hearts long to be healed and restored. Jesus comes to Peter, not to further shame him, but to heal him.
This week’s episode goes deeper into the life of St. Peter. Through personal stories and experiences, Bob and Jake help us appreciate the value of seeing ourselves as we truly are because in vulnerability, as we carry the cross, our hearts move deeper through the journey of healing. How we respond at these times brings us along the path of either Peter (hope) or Judas (despair).
Bob and Jake continue the series on healing as seen through the life of St. Peter. Identity is the core of who we are and something that God wants to assure and clarify in us. Jesus changes Simon’s name to Peter signifying a deepening of his identity. God sees truly and clearly. He sees who we are meant to be. Our search for identity and validation is most perfectly rooted in our relationship with Him.
Bob and Jake continue the series on healing as seen through the life of St. Peter. In the healing process, we can be focused on a dynamic that is important but not as deep or far reaching as what Jesus is addressing. Trusting Jesus and interpreting our journey in trust and goodness is best because we move beyond control.
Bob and Jake start a new series on how the life of St. Peter reveals important lessons for the healing journey. In Part 1, the impact of shame and the value of keeping our eyes on Jesus are discussed.
Bob and Jake finish the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss vows which are inner resolutions that we make in response to wounds and beliefs. We make these resolutions in an attempt to avoid the original pain we experienced in a wound. Vows can significantly affect the way we do life and can go unnoticed since we often perceive them as normal and necessary.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss judgements which are a type of belief that distort our perceptions of others and become a barrier to love.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss beliefs. Our lives are filled with experiences and we interpret these experiences and put meaning to them. We then agree with the beliefs that are either truths or lies.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss Type A and Type B wounds as well as seven categories of woundedness called the seven deadly wounds.
Bob and Jake start a new series about the components of a wound. Wounds, beliefs, and vows are critical aspects that, when noticed and addressed, lead to healing and freedom.
Bob and Jake conclude the series on faith or fear by explaining how our fears form a false self. Jesus invites us to deny our false self, come to Him, learn from Him, and look into His eyes of mercy.
Bob and Jake continue the series on faith or fear and discuss seven deadly wounds and their impact on our lives. We have dynamics in our hearts that are below the surface and, although they are unseen, impact our peace, love, and joy.
Bob and Jake start a new series about faith and fear. Understanding our heart’s reaction to life and why we become afraid leads us to name our fear before God and invite Him to love us, heal us, and set us free.
Bob and Jake finish their series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on God’s design for humans to be unashamed. We were designed to bear God’s image, see as He sees, and love as He loves. Our healing journey requires us to bring the depths of our shame into the light and love of God so we can live our lives to the full.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on the idea of “original unity” and how the relationship between men and women was intended, how it’s wounded, and how it’s restored.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on how females uniquely reveal God's glory, how they are wounded, and how they are healed.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on how males uniquely reveal God's glory, how they are wounded, and how they are healed.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the Theology of the Body and healing by talking about how our identity is found in God. God gives us our identity but it’s possible we have a skewed image of God that affects our identity and peace. It’s important that we are aware of where we are bringing the deep questions of our hearts because if we lose God’s identity, we lose our identity.
Bob and Jake start a series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) by sharing stories of how the TOB has brought healing into people’s lives. They discuss various aspects that are essential to the healing process and ground TOB as an essential background for healing.
Bob and Jake discuss how their (and our) life story is the critical backdrop to our healing journey.
Bob and Jake share some stories about their personal restoration and how important honest and openness are in the healing journey.
