Sport has always been a massive part of Chris’ life. Ever since he was young, the crowd had been more important than what was happening on the field. Sports, like movie productions and politics, is not immune to racial and gender bias, among others. Even to this day, despite the raised awareness against these biases, both local and international, there are still unwritten rules that athletes and the whole sports community have to push back against.

Chris grew up with parents who wanted to expand his education through sports. Along with his work experience within the local and international arena of sport. He has during these experiences learned to appreciate the inter-community between sports and the dynamics that work within teams. He believes that the core competence of leadership is self-awareness. Without it, chaos is inevitable, and compromises are difficult to reach.

What you’ll find out in this week’s episode:

  • How Chris grew up valuing education and sports
  • How he played water polo and basketball
  • How social justice and equality is possible through sports
  • How he got involved student politics
  • How players have become more diverse in sport
  • The Olympics and Paralympic systems
  • The impact of community groups in sports
  • How it feels to only be the fifth black board member at Sport England in forty years
  • What self-care and awareness means to him

…and much more.

Jack’s agenda is to address physical inactivity in children and the reasons for it. There are a multitude of reasons for physical inactivity, from money, environment, hunger, or general apathy, and too much screen time. His mantra is to get children to the point where they are physically literate and have spaces to do structured activity as well as self-directed play. For him, a joined-up approach to encouraging physical activity, between government, local authorities, schools and other institutions.

What you’ll find out in this week’s episode:

Children love to play. Their first inclination is to be physically active whether self-directed or instructed. What may not be so obvious is that tie spent swinging from monkey bars and climbing to the top of slides, can lead to a lifetime of being active. With the pressures of school and their peers, that natural inclination towards activity may begin to wane.

In this week’s episode, James speaks to Dean, the founder of Fit for Sport, a premier children’s activity provider. Dean’s dream of building Fit for Sport was fuelled by the realisation that children were hardly active during the school holidays. He saw the need to create a safe, supportive, and fun environment for children through holiday activity camps. Over the years, Fit For Sport has grown to become one of the UK’s leading childcare providers, educating and engaging children and young people through physical activity.

What you’ll find out in this week’s episode:

  • The stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding the sports coaching industry
  • The challenges facing Fit for Sport as a start-up and how they overcame them
  • The secret to starting and running a thriving coaching business
  • The benefits of physical activity for children and young people
  • Why it’s necessary to keep the focus on FUN to motivate children
  • Dean’s new venture the Social Book Club

While there is never a guarantee of success in any business, there are activities that can help promote its success. One of them is creating a business model unique to that organisation. Other than poor people skills and management, it’s usually the small stuff that separates the winners from the losers.

In this week’s episode, James speaks to Christine Kelly, the founder of Little Kickers. Little Kickers is one of the world’s leading franchise operations that provides football-themed offers to pre-school children. Launched in 2002, when Christine noticed her son’s increasing passion for football (aged 2 at the time), she was inspired to take things into her own hands, and she created an environment for children to develop early learning skills through football. Little Kickers has since evolved and changed the child education space, running educational football programs for children between the ages of 18 months and 7 years old, across 6 continents.

What you’ll find out in this week’s episode:

  • The need to prioritise communication and make the end-user experience as convenient as possible
  • How the franchising model works and tips on how to maintain the quality of your products should you choose this model
  • How Little Kickers was able to retain 96% of its customers during lockdown
  • Christine’s daily routine that improves performance in business
