Today, I have my 5 Tips for Accessible Elections and Polling Places. These are not official DOJ or US Access Board tips; they are my practical tips that will help any elections or polling place official trying to make their facilities more accessible.
Tip #1 – Start with Full Compliance First. I.e., the removal of all barriers.
Tip #2 – Recognize that full compliance may not always be achievable.
Tip #3 – Use the “Approach, Enter and Exit” methodology.
Tip #4 – Start with Parking and work your way into the voting areas.
Tip #5 – Temporary measures are your friend.

We answer this question today as we discuss Part 3 of accessibility requirements for ramps and curb ramps – pro tips for understanding the differences. We also cover guidelines on curb or barrier edge protection, handrail extension, and surface edge protection.
It's also important to note here that ramps should not be confused with curb ramps, which we will define today. Definitions are important to make sure we don’t mistake one over the other and end up not meeting the standards.
Joining us today are BlueDAG co-founders Paul Klein and Mark Wood, with over 50 years of experience in the field. We’re also joined by Trent Sunahara, our Chief Strategy Officer, and Victor Felix, BlueDAG's Director of Content and Compliance.

This week, we’re doing Part 1 of the ADA open discussion where we will be discussing all kinds of topics. In particular, it’s important to remember that the ADA only applies to public accommodations, not private housing, which still has to be accessible. But it’s subject to the provisions of the Fair Housing Act. Therefore, terms are important.
Joining us today are BlueDAG co-founders Paul Klein and Mark Wood, with over 50 years of experience in the field. We’re also joined by Victor Felix, BlueDAG's Director of Content and Compliance, and Joshua Hovinga, Chief Strategy Officer Chief.
On a side note, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) had just announced COVID-19 is going to be considered a disability under the ADA in some circumstances, especially for people with prolonged effects.

In this episode, we reveal our last and final tip for conducting effective ADA site evaluations – which is to use automation and technology to your advantage. What's cool about automation is you can do multiple site evaluations as the expert with people in the field that aren't as knowledgeable as you. Connect.U, for example, allows you to send links to people using their smartphones so you can walk them through an inspection without being on-site. Remember, any time you can use automation or technology to help speed up your process is going to help you.
Here’s a quick recap of the 7 pro tips for conducting effective ADA site evaluations: ask (why it’s being done), make sure you have the address correct, scope your project in advance, get the right tools, choose the best option for barrier documentation, photos (perspective first, details second), and finally, use automation and technology to your advantage – then you will be on your way to an awesome evaluation.

In this episode, we continue our discussion on the 2010 ADAS scoping requirements including when to comply with the International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA). People think you need to have an ISA at every door. If it's a new building, all doors must be accessible and 60% of entrances have to be accessible. But if they aren't, then you have to have a sign. Additionally, compliant toilet rooms or bathing rooms shall be identified by an ISA if not all are accessible.
We also discuss the scoping requirements for dressing rooms and locker rooms, transient lodging facilities such as a condo, and self-service storage facilities. We touch on the alteration guidelines including the special provisions for technically infeasible facilities.

This week, we continue our discussion on the 2010 ADAS scoping requirements and we're specifically going to get into the actual scoping within the code. The scoping requirements tell you what has to be accessible and how many of those items have to be accessible. The key is to start scoping when you're doing any design, inspection, evaluation, or anything like that.
So far, we've drilled down from what's your job, what type of work it is, Title II and Title III. Now, we get into the actual nuts and bolts of what scoping is.

This week, we continue our discussion on the 2010 ADAS scoping requirements. Now, another important thing when looking at the ADA is to not just look at the ADAS, but also, the ADA itself because some of the requirements don't show up in the standards, but they show up in the ADA.
We also discuss some changes between the 1991 standard and the 2010 standard as well as distinguish incremental changes from supplemental requirements. In terms of new construction, remember, there’s no excuse for not complying. There are no ifs, and’s, or buts about it. Hence, these are things you need to carefully consider.

This week, we cover Chapter 5 of the 2010 ADAS scoping requirements. We distinguish the difference in scoping requirements between a government agency and a private firm, as well as the guidelines for Title II versus Title III buildings. The overlying theme for all buildings in the United States is that you must improve access if it's readily achievable and where compliance is determined based on the 2010 ADA standards.
We’re also giving you a quick scenario looking at a two-story, non-elevator, AD room hotel built in 1966, located on a beachfront with 119 parking stalls. Listen in as we cover the different scoping requirements for this type of building based on the 2010 ADA standards.

This week, we continue our discussion on the 2010 ABS scoping requirements, specifically about what changes are permitted and not, as well as what local state or federal regulations apply. At the end of the day, what applies is whichever provides the greatest level of accessibility.
When you're doing scoping, especially in a private firm, it's often difficult to determine what changes are permitted because there could be a lot of work done that didn't get a permit. Even the work that was permitted often gets modified or changed during construction and it's not always reflected in the plans. And that can be very difficult when you're doing an evaluation of a property when there was work done and there's no documentation of it.

Ultimately, whether you're a government agency or a private firm, the goal is to provide access the best you can and to not get caught in the minutiae of the code that you miss the objective of providing better access.

This week, we are continuing our conversation on the Fair Housing Amendments Act, specifically, delving into the reasonable accommodations and modifications clause and its overlying concepts.
We’re also sharing with you this Fair Housing Act Design Manual. Published in 1996, it carried out two statutory responsibilities, broken down into seven chapters. The manual shows you how to build the apartments as well as how to configure the bathrooms, ramps, parking, etc. It's a great companion document to the ANSI, IBC, and the building code of whichever state you're in.

This week, we are continuing our conversation on the Fair Housing Amendments Act. We're covering the Federal Fair Housing Amendments Act that has established people with disabilities as a protected class that's applicable to all 50 states.
Just to give you a little bit of context, the Fair Housing Act was passed in 1968. At that time, there were no components for people with disabilities. It only had protected classes based on race, gender, and marital status, and it prohibited discriminatory renting and housing practices by private and public entities.
