We Get Outdoors Podcast: Recent Episodes

Rob Yates

This is for you if you GET the outdoors, feel alive when you are in it and know that it makes you a better person. Those among us know that to spend more time outdoors makes us a better parent, partner, boss and even lover. Some amongst us have learnt the secrets of how to get more time in the outdoors than society says is possible… they know these secrets, action them and have broken free from usual shackles without risking their wealth and relationships to do so.

While some of you may turn this desire to get outdoors off for periods of time, you can always feel it eating away inside of you and the longer you suppress it the more it burns inside of you. When you take a moment to actually get outdoors, you feel confident, focussed, able to make the world a better place as you pursue mastery of your outdoor experience.

After all you were born to get outdoors, master your craft and shine.

This is for you because you are an action taker, hard worker, learner and outdoor warrior that wants to be part of something that this tribe obsesses with. We obsess about getting outdoors more, mastering our craft, moving our line of life to a new reality that will allow us to achieve immense success in every part of our lives.

We are outdoor warriors. A part of a growing minority who have had enough of the norm, committing to getting outdoors more and willing to take action in achieving it.

We recognise that it is possible to get outdoors more. To move over the barriers which others falsely talk about, achieve everything we need to in life, have the time, finances and relationships we desire and easily get outdoors more than society says is possible.

You are destined for this, and while the path may not seem obvious now, this outdoor warrior family ensures what you were born for is possible.

You are not alone because we get outdoors and you are an outdoor warrior.

Join us as we chat with Alejo and Andrea about Living Hakuna.

In 2016, just four months after getting married and buying their regular (brick and mortar) house, Alejo and Andrea decided to leave their full-time 9 – 5 jobs. The ‘traditional’ life simply wasn’t what they expected it would be.

Back then they thought they were doing everything correctly; they went to college, got good jobs with health and retirement benefits, bought a house and had cars… It almost seemed like the perfect life.

The only problem was that they didn’t have what they desired the most, TIME. Time to be together. Time to be with their dogs.

Time to do what they love. Time to simply be happy. Since then they have chased the wind.

Living on their catamaran and kiteboarding at some of the worlds most desirable locations. You can follow these awesome folks here:

For many years, Ben has been lucky enough to see more of the world than most of my contemporaries. Its ability to inspire him, to stun him, to sadden him, to educate him, to show him love in all its heartbreaking forms, to conjure any number of emotions up within him, is what makes him tick.

Ben feels it always will. He cannot imagine a life without the foreign, an unknown that incites change, ripples him with scars and colorful imprints. Curiosity has always won over a need for the familiar, the secure.

Greg Callaghan is Red Bull sponsored and Ireland’s number-one mountain bike rider.

He is on a mission to win the Enduro World Series. In the space of a few years, Greg Callaghan has gone from living out of his customised van while self-funding his appearances at downhill mountain bike events to becoming Ireland’s only pro rider.

Callaghan made a big on the professional circuit, finishing third overall in the Enduro World Series in October 2017 after scoring some impressive results during his debut season – including his first pro race win outside of Ireland, in Madeira, Portugal.

“To get a win outside of Ireland and solidify myself as someone who's good all over the world and not just a hometown hero was a big step for me,” he says. “I don't want to be that guy that just wins at home and does OK everywhere else – I want to be the guy that can win anywhere.”

That podium-topping performance in Portugal catapulted Callaghan to the top of the rankings for a brief time at the midway point of the season. Now he’s hungry for more success and he has his sights set on becoming the first Irish rider to win the Enduro World Series.

Kit Up seeks to contribute to the goal of achieving a more sustainable economy by removing economic barriers which currently exclude people from accessing outdoor activities which require specialist equipment. At present, participation in sporting activities, particularly those which are outdoor and adventure-based, requires expensive equipment. The industry generally encourages 'upgrading' on a regular basis; promoting a culture which generates significant waste, in terms of the materials required for technical products and clothing. The excessive supply and consumption of this equipment is concerning because of the significant impact that manufacturing materials and processes have on the climate, and the social exclusion resulting from the high costs of procuring the equipment necessary to take part in the activities. The current cost of inclusion, for many sports, is inconsistent with the means of the majority. We intend to close this socially exclusive and environmentally damaging gap by facilitating a shift in culture towards a more sharing and considerate economy. Kanga Coolers was founded by 5 close friends with completely different backgrounds united by one simple thing: we love cold beer. When we were assigned a class project to create an idea that solved a problem we faced, we knew exactly what it would revolve around. We found ourselves drinking warm beer at a tailgate in Clemson, South Carolina. For the love of all that is holy, why are we drinking warm beer!?! We all had $300 coolers that could keep beer cold for a few weeks but didn’t use them to keep our beer cold for a few hours? This made no sense. Well, we didn’t use our coolers because we didn’t want to have to deal with ice and hauling the huge thing all the way to our tailgate a mile from where we parked. So, instead, we stopped by the convenience store, grabbed a cold case, and just carried it with us to drink it as it got warm. We found our problem... Warm... Beer... Sucks! With this in mind, We noticed something very profound at the tailgate next to ours. It might seem normal to most, but what it represented was life changing. We saw someone take a cold beer out of a cooler and put it into a can insulator. What we really saw was someone take a cold beer out of what made it cold (the cooler) and put it into something to keep it cold for the entire time they’ll actually enjoy it (the Insulating Sleeve). THAT’S when it hit us: WHY THE HECK ISN’T THERE A CAN INSULATOR FOR A WHOLE CASE! We took it out of a fridge (what made it cold), but we needed something to put it in to keep it cold for the entire time we were actually going to enjoy it without the ice or hassle! Right then and there, the vision for the Kanga Kase Mate was born. There was no going back. We realized what we had to do: end the tyranny of Big Cooler and set millions free from having to choose between cold OR convenience. Check out Kanga Coolers here https://kangacoolers.com/

If you want to be inspired, take the time to listen to this!

Matthew Stutzman was born in Kansas City, Kansas on December 10, 1982 without arms! Matt loved the outdoors and soon taught himself how to shoot a gun which meant attending a hunters safety course; soon after that he would sit on the porch and I would watch him shoot a hole in a penny at 30 and 50 yards. About this time he also became interested in archery so he could go bow hunting with his father. Leon took Matt up to the local hunting store (Fin and Feather) when Matt was 16 and agreed to pay for half of the bow. Matt went to work doing odd jobs to earn money to purchase the bow, once he purchased the bow he started practicing and taught himself how to shoot the bow accurately. He’s a dad, who as well as being an Olympic medalist, fixes bottles changes diapers, cooks, fixes cars, and does yard work. He likes hunting, fishing, and camping, boating and spending time with his family. The usual – just doing it all with unusual abilities in unique ways and a desire to experience life.

He has made notable first alpine ascents in the Andes, Karakoram and Greenland and has established many new rock-climbing routes in Africa, South America and Australia. He has explored many un-paddled rivers in the Congo and Amazon basin and traversed some of the world’s most isolated deserts. As society speeds (careens) towards complexity Keith and Jen Syers have come to believe that a simple life is a better fit for them. They utilize an ‘antiquated’ skill set and attempt to have as little reliance on outside systems as possible. Keith and Jen try to keep things simple.. which for them feels so much harder sometimes. Punching a clock, going to a grocery store, turning up or down the thermostat seems simple enough but we feel like there is something lost when you become removed from tasks that can keep you alive.. gardening for your produce, hunting for your meat, chopping wood for your heat, ripping logs for a dwelling and all the countless other things that go into a handmade existence. Keith also starred in the History Channel show Alone in Season 7! Check out Keith & Jen here:

DG Outdoor Adventures was formed around 2009 as Discover Guildford when Pete Lambert who at the time was an out of shape, type 1 diabetic, decided to take up a challenge of hiking the Great Wall of China for the Alzheimers Society.

As Pete was training he started to explore the Surrey Hills and in doing so he started showcasing his adventures on social media. Friends would ask where he was and the reply would be the same. "You live here". This created a Forest Gump effect and people started hiking with him.

Correy Hawk first came to our attention in season 7 of the History Channel show Alone. He is the founder of the traditional bow and arrow making firm Organic Archery, and an expert in survival, bushcraft, self reliance and archery. Correy grew up in a small village in Southeast Nebraska. He was raised to hunt, fish, forage for wild foods, and navigate the wilderness. He spent a lot of time outdoors as a family where he was taught to respect and appreciate the land and all the critters that call it home. His father is an accomplished bowhunter and had a bow and arrows in his hands as soon as he could understand their utility. Correy’s early adult years led him away from archery to pursue other interests, eventually joining the United States Marine Corps. Serving two combat tours in Afghanistan before returning home to Nebraska and becoming almost immediately infatuated with archery. He built bows obsessively as a hobby for 6 years before making Organic Archery his full-time endeavor in 2018. He is consumed by this craft, and deeply cherish the art of bow making and the mystical flight of the arrow. https://www.organicarchery.com/

Gary and Monika Wescott of Turtle Expedition have for the last thirty nine years globetrotted from the arid deserts of Afghanistan, to the deepest jungles of the Amazon, and across the frozen steppes of Siberia. They are the original overlanders!!!!

They have seen many sights and sounds on their adventures but the one which really touched their hearts was in 2014: "We were driving the Silk Road through the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan. Dropping over a 14,000-ft pass into a valley, we quite accidentally met a young girl as she walked back to her village. We were just washing the dust off our truck. She was 11 years old. With no common language, we could not communicate verbally, but there was something magical about the look in her eyes. They said “I am not afraid and I want to help you.”

They camped there for three days and met her family across the river. They were very hospitable yet very poor. This girl had received a limited education in her rural school. They are now sponsoring her to attend the prestigious Aga Khan Lycée (school) in the nearest city, three hours from her mountain village while living with a safe family. Her name is Mashhura and without Gary and Monika being the people they are she would have had a very limited education. find out more about her here: https://donorbox.org/turtleexpedition-pamir-children-education

So if you want to hear all about their stories and adventures watch this video (hard to condense a lifetime of experiences into 2 hours but we tried!!!!!)
