Carol was crossing the street when she was 18 years old (1978), and was hit by a car. She had two shattered legs, broken pelvis, fractured skull and a severe coma. She was in a coma for 14 days. In traction for her legs for 2 months, they focused on her injured legs but didn't focus on her injured brain. According to Carol, "It just wasn't done at that time."

She took one semester off then started college - she could read a book but she didn't understand the words. She almost flunked out of college but slowly she taught herself how to learn again. One step at a time. She earned one bachelors degree, an MBA and MA in international business, and she never gave up. She Never Give up on Her Dreams.

After college she moved to San Francisco, and the challenges of corporate America were much different than those in college. She had to figure out how to deal with her injured memory and figure out how to respond on her feet and work in a business. It took her years of struggle, but she finally started writing everything down after it happened, and that helped with her memory issues. She had been a top student in high school prior to my accident, but life was much more challenging after my brain injury. She never gave up, though, and faced and overcame each challenge as it occurred.

She got married, she and her husband raised three daughters, and she worked in finance for 40 years.

She is now retired and she is a part of Bridging the Gap traumatic brain injury support group for survivors, and has written an anthology of positive stories entitled Recognizing the Hero Within (32 stories, available on Amazon). It started out as a collection of brain injury survivor stories, but she then broadened it to include other stories that would also be good for the general public.

She is focusing on giving back and helping others in my retirement. "We are all here to help one another" says Carol.

Kelly Tuttle joined the “head injury survivors club” (as she described it) in 2015, the night another car pulled in front of her as she was driving. It wasn’t until three months later that she realized something was seriously wrong. Kelly’s traumatic brain injury (TBI) marked the beginning of a new life and personal journey of self-rediscovery. A neurology nurse practitioner, Kelly has a front-row seat to observe patients struggling with many of the same things she experienced in her recovery. She strives to share her coping strategies and tools and help them continue to work and study while they heal. Kelly also wants TBI patients to know there is hope. She got better, and they can too. Kelly is a member of the California Association for Nurse Practitioners, the California Association of Nurses/National Nurse United, and the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. She earned her master of science in nursing from Gonzaga University and her bachelor of science in nursing from California State University, Fresno. A longtime martial arts student, Kelly has a second-degree black belt in kenpō karate and a blue belt in Brazilian jujitsu. She is also an obsessed knitter without enough storage space for her yarn and a lover of adult coloring books and pencils. www.KellyTuttle.org

Walter was born and raised in Kearny, New Jersey, a suburb of New York City with a population of about 60,000. He liked everything about the town and Kearny High School. The town was ethnically diverse, as was Kearny High School. He did reasonably well academically and played basketball and baseball all four years.

One day a nurse came up to him and told him about a mentoring program offered by the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey. After a training session, he became Sandy’s mentor along with five others. After 20 years he is still helping Sandy, who is now 59.

What does a mentor do? Mentors try to get the survivor as many benefits possible — housing, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. Walter introduces activities like handicapped horseback riding, joining a support group, finding work opportunities, etc. He always helps them set goals that include gaining as much independence as possible. He takes each of the survivors he mentors out to lunch at least once a week.

When he became a mentor, he decided to learn as much as he could about brain injury. He joined a support group, read books, and subscribed to magazines. He has leaned much in the last 20 years but continue to learn. He wrote and published two books (Brain Injury: Living a Productive Life After a Stroke or Traumatic Brain Injury & Stroke: Promising Research that Could Change Your Life) and currently publishes a free online magazine called Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Life Magazine. (You can subscribe by emailing him at satbilmagazine@gmail.com.) Over the years he has mentored many survivors. Some have died, some have moved, and some have moved on and continued their journeys on their own. Every one of them has learned to make the most of their lives with a just a little help from him. He is currently mentoring five survivors, and after 20 years he still enjoy his role as a mentor.

Next up with Bryan is the newest President of the BIAMD Board, Julie Karp.

Julie Karp is a psychologist and provides individual and group counseling and cognitive rehabilitation to individuals who have sustained a brain injury. Occasionally, she will work with family members of individuals who have had a brain injury. Counseling often focuses on dealing with the different emotions and life changes that occur after a brain injury. Julie is also a Certified Brain Injury Specialist. She started learning about brain injuries when she was in graduate school but began providing more services when she started working at Sinai Hospital in 1992. Sinai has a dedicated brain injury day program as well as outpatient brain injury services. On a personal note, when Julie was 8 years old, she was in a car accident and sustained a hairline fracture of her skull. Although there was not much focus on concussions/mild TBi's at that time, she is sure she was concussed.

Julie lives in Baltimore and really enjoys seeing other parts of the world; her most recent trip was to Cambodia and Malaysia. She is a distance swimmer, having completed several 6-mile swims. She loves playing and snuggling with her German Shepherd.

Dr Karp's email is juliekarp@yahoo.com

Joining Bryan from remotely is Barbara Rubin.

Barbara Rubin writes this story of joy and sorrow mixed with humor and rage as both mother and advocate for her injured daughter, Jenn. Emotionally invested in this narrative, she had the advantage to write in raw detail about the triumphs and heartbreaks that follow her main character. She witnessed first-hand the battles that come when a person is the most vulnerable, but also saw the gift of human kindness and the difference it can make in another person’s life. She lived the story; it was hers to tell. Barbara hopes that her journey, lived through her daughter’s injury, will help others understand the lessons that can be learned from tolerance and gives hope to families whose path has also been darkened by tragedy.

ABLE to Save Month

August marks the nationally celebrated ABLE to Save Month. ABLE programs nationwide have changed the way people with disabilities and their families participate in the community, build financial wellness and plan for the future by empowering them to save and invest for the added expenses that come with having a disability without losing access to federal means-tested benefits. Learn more about how a Maryland ABLE can benefit you.

What does the ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) Act do?

It gives states the opportunity to develop tax-advantaged savings programs for eligible people with disabilities. These saving programs provide the opportunity for people with disabilities to maintain eligibility for federal and state benefits while saving money to cover qualified disability expenses. For SSI purposes, the first $100,000 saved in ABLE account is disregarded for the purposes of the $2,000 asset limit.

Contributions to ABLE programs are capped by the federal ABLE Act to the federal gift tax exclusion, currently $15,000 per year.

Contributions are accepted by the Maryland ABLE program up to a maximum account value of $500,000, as of December 1, 2018.

ABLE to Work Act -

The ABLE to Work Act allows beneficiaries who are employed to contribute an amount equal to their current years gross income (up to a maximum of $12,760 in 2021) each year to their ABLE accounts in addition to the annual standard contribution limit of $15,000.

Keep in mind that, if the beneficiary or their employer is contributing to a retirement plan, including a defined contribution plan (e.g. 401(k)), annuity plan (403(b)), or deferred compensation plan (457(b)) this calendar year, the beneficiary is not eligible to make ABLE to Work contributions.

Information about Maryland's ABLE account program

https://www.marylandable.org/

Maryland ABLE Visa® Prepaid Card

Maryland ABLE account holders can access the funds in their ABLE account to pay for qualified disability expenses that support the beneficiary in his or her health, independence and quality of life. Account holders can access their funds through easy online account management or they can request the Maryland ABLE Visa® Prepaid Card for a low monthly fee. The prepaid card provides a convenient way to access funds for purchases made online or in the community. It also provides additional features such as setting up card alerts and customized spending for added protection and the ability to sort, filter, and tag ABLE purchases to easily record and track expenses.

S.331 - ABLE Age Adjustment Act

https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/331?s=10&r=6

This bill increases from 26 to 46 the age threshold for tax-favored ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) accounts.

Currently, individuals are eligible to save with ABLE accounts only if their qualifying disability was onset before age 26. Enactment of S.331, the ABLE Age Adjustment Act, would increase that to age 46, and would have a huge impact on millions of Americans — including thousands of people who experienced a traumatic brain injury after age 26.
