On this special episode of Life Lessons, Colton joins forces with Doctor (SSAA Podcast, JAGP Podcast) and LumRanmaYasha (Manga Mavericks) to discuss Yuichi Fukuda’s live action adaptation of Gintama, which just recently finished its North American screenings! How did we like the movie? Are we tired of Benizakura yet? How does the film capture such classic moments as Kondo being covered in golden, sticky honey? Welcome to our new mini podcast entitled “Jumpin’ Ahead“, where Colton jumps ahead of where Life Lessons is in the manga to discuss significant story arcs that aren’t officially translated by Viz with Jon (LeitungVG), who has just seen these arcs for the first time!
On this episode though, instead of an arc from the series, we discuss the 2nd Gintama movie from 2013, Be Forever Yorozuya, also known as the “Final Chapter” of the Gintama anime. We discuss not only our general thoughts on the movie, but also discuss the difference between watching it nowadays after more anime has obviously been produced since then as opposed to when it was actually relevant at the time of release. Is Be Forever Yorozuya really a good Gintama movie, or does it fall flat due to certain limitations even with contribution from Hideaki Sorachi himself!? Be sure to listen and find out! Enoy!

Josh is the host of the anime podcast Senpai Coast to Coast and the founder of the Wave Motion Cannon blog, and had started watching Gintama shortly after meeting and becoming friends with Colton. It has been a year since that faithful day, and now it is time for Colton and Doctor to sit down with Josh behind their microphones and see what Josh thinks of the series thus far. What are his most memorable episodes? How does he feel about the cast of characters? Does he like Gintama enough to continue with it and record about it again sometime? On this episode of Life Lessons, its our third anniversary, and King Recon comes on the show once again to help cover Chapter 66 of the manga, in which the Odd Jobs get a new neighbor. Afterwards, Colton talks about Lesson 66 in the Life Lessons segment, followed by an Anime/Manga Comparison segment of Episode 47 of the anime.
The episode features an interview with Niente de Nada, the occasional ghost contributor to the podcast that Colton and Josh Dunham have mentioned and praised a ton in the past! She is also a very active member of the Gintama fan community who is seemingly the most knowledgeable of the real Japanese history that makes up the foundation of Gintama. The interview also features a few stories about a few different historical figures in which a majority of the cast are based on, so don’t miss it! This episode also marks the first episode to ever be released in two separate releases. Thats right, this episode was so long and so many people were asking for it, that it was decided that it’d be best to release half of it a bit early. On this episode of Life Lessons, Colton and Jon recap Chapter 15 of the manga. Followed by both a short Life Lessons segment and Anime/Manga Comparison segment. Not much of a description, but that’s because this is OUR SHORTEST EPISODE EVER! That’s an accomplishment, right?
We will be on hiatus throughout the month March, but will be back in April to celebrate our 1 year anniversary! How will we celebrate it? Probably by doing the same ‘old same ‘old. Maybe we’ll think of something.
On our first episode of 2014, we go over the story arc of the manga, the Harusame Arc! We start off with three manga recaps (Chapters 12 through 14), then we talk about all three chapter titles during our Life Lessons segment, followed by our Anime/Manga Comparison segment on Episode 13 of the anime and then we round off. Our longest episode this time around includes more discussion about why we love the women of Gintama, what might have happened during the Amanto War and the possibilities involving just how much Gintoki might have or have not changed after the battles he fought. This is a long one, so enjoy!!
We’re finally back after almost 3 whole months! And just in time (kinda sorta) to celebrate Gintama’s 10th anniversary! How? By doing a Manga Recap of Chapter 11! A whole number more than ten! After that, we have a short Life Lessons segment talking about food….and the chapter title I guess? Then we have our Anime/Manga Comparison talking about Episode 11 of the anime and then we wrap up! I promise we’re not this excited on the actual episode!!!! Lastly, stay tuned near the end of January (or February) as we cover the Harusame Arc, our first manga arc! Will it be in parts?
