Is Gen Z killing 12-step groups—or simply rewriting the rules of sobriety? In this episode of The Recovered Life Show, Damon Frank dives into the controversial question of whether Gen Z’s open approach to recovery and social media culture has watered down the traditions of anonymity that defined Alcoholics Anonymous for decades.
From Slate’s recent article on #Sobertok to the legacy of Bill Wilson, we unpack how younger generations are reshaping recovery and what that means for the future of 12-step programs.

In this episode of How I Did It, David shares a hard truth that changed everything for him: You can’t always control what happens, but you can always control how you respond when life doesn’t go your way. When life threw him curveballs, David stopped saying “life sucks” and started asking better questions: What can I learn? How can I be better tomorrow? That mindset shift became the foundation of his recovery.

In this raw and honest follow-up conversation, Jomo opened up to Damon about what it really took for him to recover—and it wasn’t easy. He talked about having a “Joey problem,” the old version of himself that kept him alive on the streets but ultimately blocked him from healing. The hardest part wasn’t just staying clean—it was surrendering the survival traits, the anger, the need to be hard, and instead stepping into humility and vulnerability.
He emphasized that recovery didn’t happen until he became fully teachable. Jomo shared that giving only 50% of himself to the process meant only getting 50% of the results. The turning point came when he decided to go all in—to open his heart, let the old defenses drop, and fully commit to becoming a better version of himself.

In this episode of How I Did It, Brandon doesn’t sugarcoat a thing. He’s been there—high, checked out, spiraling—and he’s done pretending it didn’t affect anyone else. This is the wake-up call most people don’t want, but damn sure need.
Brandon breaks down what happens when you finally stop lying to yourself. The excuses run out. The fake promises don’t land anymore. And if you actually love the people in your life—and if there’s even a shred of self-respect left—then getting sober isn’t optional. It’s the only play that makes sense.

In a world that often feels insurmountable, Tim Lineaweaver’s story reminds us that hope and redemption are always within reach. His journey through addiction and into sobriety is a testament to the transformative power of recovery.
Tim Lineaweaver's life was overshadowed by addiction to alcohol and cocaine from an early age. Growing up in an alcoholic household, he had his first blackout at just 18, which marked the beginning of a relentless cycle. His addiction took him to places he never thought he would go, stripping him of his dignity, family, and sense of self. Yet, in the depths of despair, Tim found a spark of hope one fateful day after his daughter's christening, which propelled him to seek help. With the support of therapy, group sessions, and a commitment to change, he embarked on a grueling but fruitful recovery journey.

The initial month of sobriety was starkly challenging for Tim. He described it as a “rock fight,” filled with emotional turmoil yet suffused with a sense of commitment he had never felt before. As he navigated through the shadows of his addiction, he found clarity and purpose; everything began to shift. Sobriety did not just reclaim his relationships; it granted him a life filled with love and fulfillment. Celebrating over thirty years of sobriety, Tim is now the proud father of three and a grandfather of four. His recovery has even led him to become a therapist, guiding others struggling with similar battles, helping them find their way back into the light.
“What I can tell you is that everything I have today has been granted to me by being sober,” - Tim Leideweber
His own experience has become a beacon for many lost in the darkness, illustrating that recovery is possible and profoundly rewarding. He urges those teetering on the edge of change, reminding them, “If you work at it and commit yourself, then you too can be sober—even if you’ve relapsed before. Just learn from it and keep pushing forward.”

After recording an episode of The Recovered Life Show with Coach Joe, I’ve been thinking a lot about the powerful insights he shared. Last week, I had an intense and enlightening discussion on BPD & Addiction on the Recovered Life Show. In this After the Show segment, I was joined by Kennedy McGurkin, a therapist and the owner of Returning to Self LLC. This conversation was raw, real, and necessary—diving into the intersection of borderline personality disorder (BPD), addiction, codependency, and recovery.
Facing the Fear Around BPD
I’ll be honest—this was a topic that made me nervous. As a streamer, I’ve encountered many individuals struggling with BPD and addiction, and at first, I didn’t know what I was looking at. It felt like drama, chaos, and unpredictability. But over time, I began to understand that what seemed like manipulation was really a deep fear of abandonment playing out in real time.
In this episode of The Recovered Life Show, host Damon Frank welcomes back therapist Kennedy McGurkin from Returning to Self in Boise, Idaho, for a deep dive into borderline personality disorder (BPD) and its connection to addiction recovery. Kennedy shares valuable insights on how BPD affects emotions, relationships, and self-perception, as well as why it is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. She highlights the fear of abandonment as a driving force behind many behaviors associated with BPD and explains why individuals with BPD may struggle with addiction as a means of self-medication.
Recovered Life is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
This conversation also explores the challenges men face in receiving a BPD diagnosis, how symptoms manifest differently between genders, and the role of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in managing symptoms. Kennedy emphasizes that recovery is possible, encouraging those who suspect they may have BPD to seek professional diagnosis and treatment. For individuals in recovery, building a supportive community and addressing both addiction and mental health issues are crucial for long-term healing.

I had a real, unfiltered convo with Christie Dames after the latest episode of The Recovered Life Show for the Recovered Life + Plus Subscribers—and we didn’t hold back. 💯
In our latest episode, we dove into something that affects almost every person in recovery but doesn’t get talked about enough—what you eat and how it impacts your sobriety. Christie and I had a deep, honest discussion about food, mindset, and the ways our bodies heal after years of addiction.
Main Takeaways from the Episode
1. What You Eat Affects Your Recovery More Than You Think
It’s easy to overlook the impact of food when we talk about sobriety. But what you put into your body directly affects how you feel mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Many people in recovery struggle with feeling “off” even after years of sobriety, and Christie argues that a huge part of that comes down to diet.

Jessica Dueñas shared her experiences with dating while in recovery, emphasizing the importance of disclosing one's recovery status to potential partners and projecting it as an asset rather than a liability. She explained that this disclosure can help filter out individuals who might not be supportive. Jessica also warned against dating heavy drinkers or substance users during early recovery and encouraged self-confidence and a better sense of self-worth in choosing partners. She suggested that one's profile on a dating site can give a lot of information about their attitude and personality, recommending avoiding people with a predominantly negative outlook. Finally, she advised that individuals should experiment with different approaches to find what makes them most comfortable in dating scenarios.

They share personal anecdotes, provide insights on overcoming the guilt associated with having fun while in recovery, and highlight the pivotal role that camaraderie, connection, and a robust network play in staying sober.
Tune in as Kevin elaborates on the spiritual aspect of recovery and how being joyful and having fun can enhance one's relationship with God. He explains how this is an integral part of being well-rounded and contributes to our ability to handle life's ups and downs. In every episode of How I Did It, I talk with someone in recovery about how they have been able to stay sober.
We dive into what their life in addiction was like and what their life in sobriety is like now.
Remember, addiction is a life-threatening condition. The information in this episode is provided as a resource only and is not to be used or relied on for any diagnostic or treatment purposes. This is not a substitute when professional diagnosis or treatment is needed.
Now let’s jump into the discussion and find out how they did it!

Kristina Dennis (00:00):
Been doing this for a long time. If you've been the over-gift giver, you're the one who researches to every list and you're giving gifts to the mailman and all of the people that are in your life, and you're doing it to the detriment of yourself. In other words, you don't have the money and you don't have the time and you're starting to, you know, be a Glink toward people because you've put this expectation. That's a big screech stop, stop right there and start doing some inventory, figure out why you're having these feelings or what are the actual feelings that are showing up and then start sitting back and going, okay, what is my motive? Is it to solve somebody else's problem.
Introduction (00:42):
You're listening to the recovered life show the show that helps people in recovery live their best recovered lives. And here is your host Damon, Frank,
Damon Frank (00:52):
Welcome back to the recovered life show. I'm pleased to be joined today by Christina, Dennis covered life contributor, codependency and recovery coach. How you doing today, Christina? I am great.
Kristina Dennis (01:04):
Thank you for having me, Damon. I
Damon Frank (01:06):
Always love having you on the show because we talk about really important topics. And we talk a lot about codependency and the feelings of co-dependency. And I was having a conversation with you on the phone the other day. And we were talking about black Friday. We were talking about shopping and the whole stress of buying for the holidays and the relation between that and codependency. And, you know, I wanted to kind of dive into that on this episode and really talk about, you know, what, you know, what that whole stress, what is that about as far as a codependent lens of overbuying and over-committing financially on the holidays?
Kristina Dennis (01:47):
Absolutely. Well, I think that the holiday gift giving can be one of the biggest slippery slopes for co-dependence who are trying to not be codependent in their behaviors anymore because commercialism, as well as expectations, bring us to that place where we feel like we are not enough, unless we over-give, we are.
Damon Frank (02:14):
Yeah. You know, I, I, you know, right now we're in the heart of it like black Friday, doesn't it seem like everything is designed to try to push people almost from a guilty way, especially Brack black Friday. It's like, you have to really overspend and you have to over-commit and you have to do it now and you have to do it this weekend and you know, and you better do a lot of it.
Kristina Dennis (02:37):
Right? And I mean, for a codependent, it's very difficult to not feel like they're going to measure up. But when you have commercialism, when you have past give gift giving histories, in which you've gone over the top, you're going to feel like it's your job to go out and get the most expensive gift or the biggest gift or the most perfect gift for that person. It has become almost, uh, almost sacrilegious to not be able to be good at gift giving. If you look around, everybody has a top 10 list of what to purchase every, you know, communication that's out there is based around us solving our relationship issues through gift giving. It's impossible to do it.
Damon Frank (03:22):
You, you said it solving our relationships through gift giving and you know, what is the tie in there with codependency and this overspending? Because I think when you, when you talk about codependency, you're really inevitably talking about relationships. Right? Right. So what is, what is that tying in, in, in what do people who have identified themselves as possibly codependent or have traits of codependency? How does this relate to over-giving in the holidays?
Kristina Dennis (03:50):
Absolutely. Well, first and foremost, you have to figure out what your motivations are for the gift giving as a codependent, we usually depend on others, opinions of us to create our own value. So if you have gotten a hit from giving a perfect gift in the past, or you have become quote, generous, you know, with your gift giving, oh, you always give the most perfect gift. You may feel like you're actually having withdrawal symptoms. If you stop partaking in that kind of behavior, it is so difficult to separate what is the expectation and what we are doing and what our motives are. So absolutely check your motives. Why are you giving the gift? Is it to look perfect?
Damon Frank (04:36):
I love the, I love the check, your motives, uh, philosophy, because I think everybody has had that feeling of giving something and the person that receives it just loves it. Right? Yes. And I, and I don't think what you're saying is, is that don't give people things that they're going to love, obviously, as a gift, we want to give something that people like, but it's that feeling that you've just gone too far or this obsession. Right. And I, and I've been there. I have to admit that I've been there before, where I felt like, oh, you know, what kind of obsessed that I've got to get the perfect gift that it got. And, and, you know, really probably if I look at that, it might tie into a past time where I did that and got some sort of acknowledgement for it and really felt that like, oh, wow, that's important that I knocked this out of the park all the time.
Damon Frank (05:25):
When does it, um, you know, can you talk about some of the feelings that go along with this? Because you know, when we talk about, uh, feelings and codependency and gift giving and overspending, there's all different kinds of stuff that's going on. You know, I know when people think about money, they have a lot of fear, right? We have a lot of fear, but at the same time, co-dependencies codependent. People have fear that they're not going to please other people, right? So it feels like this is all, all these feelings are kind of jumbled in together.
Kristina Dennis (05:53):
And it's the worst situation for a codependent to be in when you start having awareness. Um, for instance, many codependents would consider themselves generous. I'm just being generous, but we're doing it from a place of trying to control the other person, trying to move their body to a certain place, expecting a reaction, you know, and it's all about trying to, to, uh, be seen as better than we are the problem with co-dependent who does this over and over again. And I'll speak for my terms. The problem was that if I was giving these extravagant gifts that painted this picture of me being clever and smart and generous and just an over the top, doesn't she know she, you know, she knows exactly what to get me. Oh my gosh, I can't believe you're doing it. I was making the gift giving about me. All right. I wanted to have the shiny lights and all of the credit. And I absolutely was creating this false premise of myself. So even if the people loved me, I kind of put myself in a corner because I would get confused about, well, maybe they don't really love me unless I continue to buy gifts, you know? So you're really setting yourself up for failure. Um, so I think it's a matter of control. It's a matter of saving the other person. It's a matter of getting your identity from their reaction and what you expect from them.
Damon Frank (07:20):
Yeah. And I think we always hear in recovery that resentment is the number one offender. And you know, one of the things I think about over-giving is that if you can't detach from what you're giving and your expectation is that they're going to like it at a level that is going to accommodate your feelings about it is isn't that really where the problem begins
Kristina Dennis (07:42):
So controlling. And even as a codependent, you could give gifts that you think are going to help them. That's another, it's another sly way of trying to control their behavior. I remember once getting a can of paint, uh, for a gift because the person wanted me to paint my bathroom. And so I think back to my history and I realized, oh my gosh, giving people self-help books, making the presumption that you're somehow going to control their behavior or help them have a better relationship with you. I am sorry to burst a codependent Bible. It is not about your generosity. It's about trying to keep yourself safe and to control other people's behaviors.
Damon Frank (08:23):
You know, that is why you are the codependency coach, because I didn't even think about that. And what you're bringing out is what you're choosing to get people. Are you trying to control them even clothing items? Right. Like I think back to a family member who, uh, was upset when I was a teenager that we wouldn't wear jackets in the winter. Right. And we wouldn't go out prepared. Right? So every holiday I would get a jacket or a long sleeve shirt or something, and it was great. But you know, as I get older learned to kind of make that connection, I mean, people really do that, right? It is w what's the feeling behind that for the codependent person, that somehow there'll be some huge breakthrough, right? And that the person, when they get the gift are going to have that realization that they need to do some sort of behavior modification.
Kristina Dennis (09:11):
Absolutely. You can check your motives. If you're sitting there waiting for a reaction to be over the top or for this person to change their entire life. Oh, I've got this great book. Now I'm going to look at my own stuff and start having breakthroughs in my, you know, trouble with having intimacy. I mean, it's crazy that reasons why we give gift. One of my favorite nuggets, um, out of a program of recovery is if it isn't for fun or for free, you don't do it. And that can apply to gift giving. If you are not doing something that will give that other person pleasure, you know, that's fun for them, and you're doing it with an expectation attached to it, then you're not really giving them a gift and people will resent it. You brought up the perfect example of that, that as a teenager, and we do this with teenagers where we purchase things that we feel are better for them.
Kristina Dennis (10:02):
And I tell people, you buy a gift certificate, or you look at something that if this person is for fun and has everything, then you look at an experience you need to determine what is that? What is the reason why you're giving somebody a gift in the first place? And we're all obligated at Christmas or Hanukkah to give gifts. And this is one of the areas of boundaries that every codependent needs to look at money. Now, a lot of us will think that the money boundaries about not lending somebody money, but the truth is the money boundaries about you. And how much are you willing to do it? If you're going into debt? Um, which I know this is not going to be a popular thought, but if you're going into debt, then oops, you've done it again.
Damon Frank (10:46):
Hey, we'll be right back to the show. After this brief message from our sponsor holiday rescue is an information pack course. That is perfect for anyone in recovery, looking to survive the holidays, happy, sober, and fulfilled. Even if the people around you are not. This exclusive video course includes a 30 page workbook over an hour of video and strategies from leading interventionists, Brian O'Shea world renowned codependency, coach, Christina, Dennis, and educational neuroscientists, Stacy Danford. Don't go through this holiday season miserable. When you have the power to change it, just go to recovered life dot U S forward slash holiday to find out more that's recovered, life dot U S forward slash holiday. Now back to the show,
Kristina Dennis (11:35):
You have to pull back and figure out exactly what you can afford and what will work for that person as well as within your budget.
Damon Frank (11:45):
You know, it's, um, it's, it's interesting that you say like, you have to pull back because in recovery, you know, many people that are listening to this are in recovery, from drugs, alcohol codependency, and one of the first things that you learn is that, uh, people that have addiction issues have a hard time pulling back because they get addicted. They go a little too far. Right, right. And I've seen this with gift-giving and you, I love the examples that you set out because you're talking about, you know, what does the person really want? And then what can you do? Right. And that balance back and forth. Christina, can you give us some tips here about if you, if people are listening to this and the pressure's on, right. And they've already been on the computer or been to the mall five times. Um, and since they've, you know, we know that now they're seeing this, right. And, and there's that feeling? It's like, well, I have to do more. I've got to get that one extra gift I got after. It's got to be totally perfect. What do you do? What, what do you do if you have these codependency traits and you feel that you've gone a little bit too far, what are some great tips for people?
Kristina Dennis (12:56):
Well, absolutely. If you've been doing this for a long time, if you've been the over gift giver, if you're the one who researches to every list and you're giving gifts to the mailman and all of the people that are in your life, and you're doing it to the detriment of yourself. In other words, you don't have the money and you don't have the time and you're starting to, you know, be ugly toward people because you've put this expectation. That's a big screech stop, stop right there and start doing some inventory, figure out why you're having these feelings or what are the actual feelings that are showing up and then start sitting back and going, okay, what is my motive? Is it to solve somebody? Else's problem? Am I giving a gift to solve somebody? Else's problem? Am I giving a gift to avoid focusing on myself? Am I giving a gift? Because I want this person to care about me as much as I care about them. Am I giving a gift to be perfect? These are great questions to ask yourself, start with that and be honest, why am I going overboard? What am I deferring? You know, what am I not looking at by getting all caught up in Christmas or Hanukkah, uh, and spending the money that I don't necessarily have.
Damon Frank (14:13):
Yeah. And I think, you know, just like any other addiction, there will come the hangover and the price that you have to pay for everything that you do. Right. Right. And I think that as people get into January, uh, when that credit card bill comes in and then they don't, if they feel that they didn't get what they wanted out of it. And you know, one of the things that we've, we've, we've learned from you and on this episode too, is that codependent people primarily do not get what they want out of it because ultimately they never really get the payoff. Right.
Kristina Dennis (14:43):
Absolutely. It's a setup. It's a complete setup for you. And for that other person, these behaviors, you will continue question what the other person's there for. Is it because I'm a gift giver? Is it because I plan everything? Is it because I show up and fill in all the cracks? Or is it because I actually am a person who has feelings? I was so lonely in my late twenties, even though I had a ton of friends because I never showed anybody what I had in regards to me, or once or hopes. And so they couldn't necessarily fulfill it. Nobody could compete with me when it came to gift giving. And that's a way of keeping control and keeping yourself safe.
Damon Frank (15:25):
Yeah. And you know, this whole idea of control, I think this is great. And when you start to have these feelings, just to be able to go down that checklist and inventory that you're talking about, and to kind of just check them off, right. Check them off one by one to really find out what your motives are. Now question as a codependent person, as a gift receiver. If you're receiving things, what's the side of that. And the tie-in with codependency and receiving
Kristina Dennis (15:54):
Well, if somebody is gift giving with strings attached, there's going to be resentment. If you're the receiver, you get something in, I'm pretty sure everybody can relate to this. You get something. And, you know, there's a string attached to it. You know, big extravagant gifts. I see parents purchasing cars for people or, you know, homes, but the attachment is, is that you are dependent on me and you're not going to have your own thoughts. And you're never going to go outside of this contract that we have. So gift giving is not going to solve any of the history that's happening as a risk as somebody who's receiving it. Um, you can say, thank you, but you also have to determine, do I need to have a conversation with this person that says, I, uh, it was a little uncomfortable that's too extravagant, or what are, what are your expectations of my behavior?
Kristina Dennis (16:46):
As we all know, we all know that very few things are for free, that you're paying for them. Eventually until you start cleaning up your relationships with people and start really determining by doing that checklist and having an accountability partner and having a budget that you stick with, you're going to have to, to kind of go through some of the yucky feelings of what has happened, but I say, receive the gift in the gracious manner and then talk it over with somebody after if you know that there are strings attached and you come up with a plan on how you're going to handle that in the future.
Damon Frank (17:25):
Christina and Dennis, this has been an amazing episode with a lot of great takeaways. And I think the big takeaway is that any kind of gift receiving a gift or giving a gift, is it going to heal a past broken relationship? That one act, you know, is not, is not going to heal that. And I think one of the things that you talk about that is so good is, is, you know, working on yourself to make sure before you get in this, uh, in these positions, right, that you know what your motivation and intentions are. Christina, thank you so much for coming on the show today. And you guys can find out more about Christina at recovered life. And she puts a lot of takeaways there on the blog and also in the private community. Thank you so much, Christina, for coming on today.
Kristina Dennis (18:14):
You're welcome. Everybody have a safe holiday and stick with your budget. You don't have to over gift.

About our guest Curt Eichelberger:
Curt is a father, husband, brother, graphic artist, music lover and green thumb. He made the difficult decision to share his story, which has been an important part of his recovery. By finally being honest with himself and others, he has learned to love himself and is committed to helping others do the same. His story is below.
“As a teen, I was a bit of an outcast. I was shy and quiet. Then I discovered two things that would change my life forever: skateboarding & punk rock. Skateboarding became my true love and punk provided the soundtrack. Our scene was not shy about drinking and using drugs. It was a huge part of the lifestyle, and my friends and I were all hooked. As time went on, that same group of friends started getting smaller and smaller due to overdoses, drunk driving accidents & suicides. But the party didn’t stop. Eventually, I married and had two kids. The partying slowed down a little, but a painful divorce sent me right back down the path of destruction.
Years later, I found happiness and married again. We enjoyed drinking together socially, but after my wife lost her only brother in a drunk driving accident, she became less interested in drinking. I didn’t understand why that meant I had to slow down, so I kept drinking without her. Eventually, I was only drinking vodka alone at home. Until I couldn’t stop and was physically dependent on that next drink. I constantly needed eye drops because my eyes were so bloodshot, I was bloated, I was hiding bottles around the house. I lied to myself and my wife for years.
In 2009, I got a felony DUI & went to jail. But I didn’t stop drinking. My doctor told me I had a fatty liver. I still didn’t stop. I knew I was slowly killing myself and I didn’t care. I would fight with my wife, disappear for days and go on drinking binges. My wife had finally enough & gave me a choice: rehab or relocate. I was angry and scared but I knew that I needed to change unless I wanted to lose everything, including my life.
My wife drove me five hours to the treatment center where I would spend the next 30 days. I came very close to dying in rehab. My blood pressure was off the charts and I was at high risk of seizure. The staff even notified my wife that she may need to plan to drive back if my health didn’t improve. Thankfully I was able to successfully complete treatment. I am grateful for my second chance and for the opportunity to help others. Getting sober was the best gift I could have given myself. My family has been so supportive and tell me I have transformed into the best version of myself.
Now I’m thankful that my liver numbers are normalized. I am feeling good and I’m proud to be back on my skateboard. As my friends sasw the change in me, slowly some of them began confiding in me that they might want to quit drinking but didn’t know how to stop. It was then that I realized there were others just like me and I knew I wanted to help them by creating a support group. This is what led me to start Skate Straight – an awesome group of like-minded people that come together in a safe & sober space to talk, share, skate and support each other. And we always remind each other that we are all important and worthy of good health and true happiness!”

About our guest Kyle:
Born in Hilo, Hawaii, Kyle’s upbringing was ideal. He describes being brought up by his grandfather with wholesome family values and strong morals and ethics. After his grandfather introduced him to golf at the age of 5, Kyle quickly fell in love with the sport, dedicating every waking moment to perfecting his craft and becoming a six-time state golf champion, winning 16 titles, coming 4th in the world, and playing alongside Tiger Woods at ten years old. But after allowing his relative success to make him arrogant and prideful, Kyle was expelled from high school in his senior year, which became the catalyst for a downward spiral that eventually led him to become a 98-pound crystal meth addict, labeled Hawaii’s most wanted and a menace to society.
Kyle’s addiction ultimately led him to spend a decade behind bars. At what might be considered his rock bottom, he dedicated himself to his sobriety (Kyle is over fifteen years sober.) He committed to doing everything in his power to better himself so he could build a legacy of youth empowerment and education upon his release.
As a motivational speaker, Kyle is engaging and charismatic; it’s impossible not to smile when encountering Kyle’s lighthearted nature. He shares a powerful and poignant message that you are always one choice away from a different life. As a Top Youth Speaker with a powerful story of adversity, regrets, and, finally, triumph, Kyle is on a bold mission to use his real-life experiences to educate and empower the youth in making healthy, wise choices for a productive life.
Today, Kyle, a successful businessman, and motivational speaker, champions the importance of every choice we make. He’s spoken at over 200 schools in the past five years and continues to educate the youth on the life-changing power of their choices. With a vision to become the positive mentor figure that his grandfather was to him, he helps students avoid the same pitfalls that he experienced. Kyle teaches students to embrace life’s possibilities, change negative behaviors and patterns, and achieve freedom through deciding to make positive choices for their present and future.

Zach Mathers is someone that has always chased his dreams. At a young age, he started a non-profit organization filming stories of suffering in injustice around the world to help bring exposure to situations no one was aware of. This helped shift his worldview and have more love and compassion for others around him. Zach has always sought to encourage others and help them live out their full potential.
Along the road of helping others, Zach found himself struggling with alcohol and the shame attached to it. He dove into counseling and a road of discovering the roots behind his addiction and the resources he needed to stay sober. Through that journey he had to address the shame he felt from his actions in life. Realizing the paralyzing power of shame Zach now works to coach others and bring hope to people that are stuck in their own shame and addictions.
Zach now takes what he has learned in his recovery and coaches people toward sobriety and changing their lives. He believes that everyone needs to look at the root of the problem. Zach has crafted a unique way to guide people to discover their true identity and help coach them in becoming free and living into their identity.

Damon Frank (00:02):
You're listening to the recovered life show the show that helps people in recovery live their best recovered lives. And here is your host, Damon Frank.
George Snyder (00:15):
His name is Frank with recovered life, and I am back with my favorite, uh, life and recovery strategist, George Snyder.
George Snyder (00:23):
Hey, man. Good to see you
George Snyder (00:26):
Really great to see you. Uh, another great talk we're going to have today here, and I love the topic that we're talking about and it's something that really, honestly, we covered a couple of times in the old school men's mastermind group. Um, and I think the way you wrote it, I think the topic is almost like a star Wars sequel SQL. It's not quite as good as the Mandalorian, but it's, it's good. And, and it's pretty clear. I give everybody the topic that you wrote. The awakening must continue. Sobriety is only the beginning. Come on guys. That's pretty good. That's ripped from the headlines.
George Snyder (01:08):
That's right. Ripped from the headlines.
George Snyder (01:12):
Well, as long as you know, we, we like to have fun here, but we also like to try to get something out of these. And I wanted to kind of dive into what this means. The awakening must continue. And it's a lot about why, you know, the ideas I've had for recovered life and, and why both of us have been really passionate about this and other people that we know have been passionate about interacting and participating in recovery life is because sobriety is really the only the beginning. You know, most of the people that, that we know that we deal with day to day will be in recovery for decades, right? They've been in recovery from decades. So it's only the beginning and the first awakening is only the first awakening. Many more awakenings must continue. And, and, you know, I think if people are listening to this, the question that they might have, and this question I'm going to ask you is what is the importance of the spiritual awakening in recovery?
George Snyder (02:11):
That's a good question. I mean, I think as you said, and I hear people in recovery say, well, you know, sobriety is what you get. I, I think that is, as you said, it's only the beginning. It's a lot of people use architecture is a metaphor, you know, building a foundation and, and, but I, I, and that's not bad, but I think for me, a better metaphor is the journey. It's a journey, you know, rom Doss said, we're all just walking each other home. And really that's so speaks to my heart and speaks to me about what this is all a bit been about. You come into recovery and you do is kind of awakening up. I mean, I remember early on thinking, I felt like I had been peeled. Do you know, just so conscious after many years of not wanting to feel, not wanting to have any sense of being to suddenly be awake and wow. You know, but that's just the start. It's gotta be just a start. It's gotta be,
George Snyder (03:17):
I think, um, I think one thing too, that you know, is always, you know, after you have been in recovery for a while, you start to, you start to realize when you're first in recovery and have these awakenings, you think, Oh, this has gotta be special to people who are just in recovery. And as you learn, awakenings have been going on with everybody for millennia. Right. But the significance of it to people who are in recovery is, is, is a, is a little different in the application about what we get out of it. Right. And you know, I, what I really like is the whole idea of, it's not really the first awakening we have to continue to awaken to enfold. And I'd love for you to hear your thoughts on that. And I know a lot of the guys, uh, added some amazing things to this that I had never thought of.
George Snyder (04:18):
Yeah. And, you know, as we say, this is not something that is not a process can be finished and done with, you know, and it was just recently talking to one of my buddies and he said, I didn't know, you could feel this way. And I said, because he sounded great and he's done a lot of he's done. A lot of work is a lot of in it's. And he said, I didn't know, you could feel this way. And I said, it's called feeling, okay, it's called feeling good. You can feel good. And that, for those of us who spend so spent so much of our lives, not feeling anything to awaken is to find out that there's a whole other way, you know, there's a Chuck Chamberlain used to say that, you know, we're a strange breed of cat. We don't, we can't see till we could see, we can't hear till we can hear.
George Snyder (05:06):
And then we do, there's a whole other, and I've said this to guys, you know, there's a whole other reality. You're just not aware of because you can't see it, can't hear it. And then you get into recovery, you get begin to put some time together and be around us. And you're like, Oh wow. Oh, wow. And I remember early on, I was walking with, uh, somebody and we're walking down the street. They had these little windup doubt, that little pink dogs that you wind them up in the street vendors, sell them on the sidewalk. And he had wound up a bunch of them that all these little pink dogs are bouncing around the sidewalk. And, uh, I wasn't really sure tell you the truth. I wasn't really sure what was happening. And the guy Lando, the guy who was, I was with leaned over and he said, they're really they're. Wow. Yeah. I was like, yeah, I know. I know, but I didn't, wasn't sure
George Snyder (05:58):
You did. You didn't know. Yeah. I, you know, it, the, the thing that I really got out of the group with this particular topic was the importance of continuing your spiritual journey and the problems that you can get into. If you're somebody in recovery and you choose no more, I've gone. As far as I'm going to go, I'm not going to have any more awakenings, the absolute, you know, destruction that, that actually causes with people in recovery. It is it's shocking.
George Snyder (06:40):
Will you stop? You can't stop growing. That's it. And that's what I find sad. It says, well, I, you know, I, I don't get high anymore, I guess, as is it no. And for you said it to me, it was so important when you said, you know, maybe I don't know what this God thing is. His higher power is, but I can have a relationship with it. I can check in with it. And I think building and wow to build a relationship with, I'm not even sure what it is, you know, and get that reality check with the people who say, yeah, there really are a little pink dogs bouncing around the sidewalk. You're okay. You know, and realize that that too is part of it, that the world is strange and I can wake him to that and I can seek experiences. You begin, things begin to happen. You think, but you can't stop. This is not something to be finished and done. And I think that so many people think get in that retrogressive groove. I think that's the old language, um, get in a rut.
George Snyder (07:36):
And I think a lot of that, this is not something that I can be done with means I just have to clean a bunch more coffee pots and do this, but that's not what that means. Right. Have to work with 10 more people until I don't sleep. That's not what this means. What this means is is that any, and this is where I think the everyday heroes are in recovery. And what I see so prevalent in the old school men's mastermind group is we go, we go there, right? And it's the everyday heroes of the faith. It takes to step back out on the battlefield. One more time to have, get another deepening awakening, um, is, is impressive. And it, and it challenges me personally to do the same.
George Snyder (08:26):
Yeah. I mean to quote Oprah, all right. Uh, God's in the cleanup. It's not, it's not necessarily what things, bad things happen, but what are you going to do about it, where God is in the cleanup, God's in the cleanup, wet your reaction. And I think that in that, in that, in that effort, in that work and sharing that with others, we get into that, that, that awakening and that growth that's, what's coming out of this. That's what we're talking about. We're going to continue to grow and to have a fully realized authentic life, recovered, rewarding, real this RL man, it's real life and it's real life and a whole lot stranger and a whole lot richer and a whole lot more beautiful than I ever would have imagined when I was so busy. Trying not to feel anything, not to be present. You know,
Damon Frank (09:20):
We're going to end it there with these, with the, with the statement again, the awakening continue.
George Snyder (09:29):
Thank you, Damon. Always good.
Damon Frank (09:33):

Show Transcript:Damon Frank (00:02):
You're listening to the recovered life show the show that helps people in recovery live their best recovered lives. And here is your host, Damon Frank.
George Snyder (00:13):
Hey, it is Damon Frank with reovered life and I'm here again with our favorite or absolute favorite life and recovery strategy and strategists. George Snyder. How you doing George?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Hey, Damon. Good to see you always good to see you. We have fun doing it.
George Snyder (00:31):
We do, we do it. I was laughing at the end because you know, I really enjoy doing these because we always have a chuckle. I always learned something and I always leave better off than when I came. Right. So I that's the magic combination for me. Uh, but yeah, you know, and, and this one, particularly when I decided that I was going to ask you some questions on this specific topic, I thought, Ooh, this is going to be a doozy. This one's going to be good. And let's tell everybody what the topic that I'm going to talk with you about is tolerance. Tolerance is a topic. And I have to tell you, that's all you hear typically in recovery is be tolerant, be tolerant, be tolerant tolerant of others. People aren't like you everybody's the same. I like you hear this constantly, but you know, as the host of the old school men's mastermind group, would you dove into this in a session? What I want to know is, and the big question is why is being tolerant so important in recovery?
Speaker 3 (01:35):
I think what, as we share our narratives that we share our story, you realize how you're constructing your own reality. And what I think of you creates my reality, what you think of me creates yours. So you see how your w so it becomes important because it's building not, not the world outside of you, but the world that you are inhabited, they were across section. We're a, we're a diverse group of guys where it just in our own group, we have diversity. We have a full range of so, you know, economic status, et cetera, et cetera. But we identify, as we said before, you identify and are in recovery through your weaknesses, through what brought you here or your vulnerability, uh, rather than your strengths. So when you begin to realize that everybody else is fighting a battle, everybody else has come here, not at their best, not like you come to, to, to recovery and saying, my life is so fantastic. I think this'll just make it a little bit better, you know, be the cherry on top. It's not that at all. So we come in kind of beaten down. It is useful as we begin to rebuild our, our story on who we are and what we're doing here to be tolerant of the others. But it's, it's about the way we frame our own reality, I think. Yeah.
George Snyder (02:54):
And, you know, and I think too, a lot of what I found through, you know, attending this particular session was, and what I heard from, you know, like you said, this cross section of people that we have in there is that, you know, tolerance is a thinking issue and it's a listening issue as well. It's the inability to listen because you've already, pre-framed what you think is going to happen. And the impact that I learned about from specifically from the old school mastermind was when I stopped listening, I stopped growing. So it's not about many people think it's like, have no boundaries do what you know. And so many people come in with codependency issues. It's not tolerance isn't that you can have boundaries and you can stand up for yourself and you can assert your opinion. But tolerance is about being able to listen without having this huge, massive, emotional reaction and just shutting everything down.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Well, and so much of it is for me is about suspending my judgment, if I can get there, because my judgment, I use judgment as a defense. You know, I, I think I know what you think of me. I'm a bad psychic, but I think I know what you think of me. And so I'm gonna, I'm going to come out, right. And where are you? Who do you think you are? You're not so hot. So then I justify treating you badly because I'm projecting what I think it defeats. I got to suspend that judgment. And I do that. If I can get my, if I can be in a, if I have the opportunity to be in a group of people and get to hear other people's stories, you begin to identify.
George Snyder (04:40):
Yeah. And you know, a lot of it we discussed were tools and strategies about how to frame your thinking at the very beginning to slow yourself down. So you're not in this combative place right off where, you know, right from go, you know, I could tell you some of the most amazing things that have happened in recovery are people that when I first met them, I would say one, I'm never going to be their friend too. I can't stand them. Like, and, and then literally within a year period of time calling one of those people, one of my very good friends, right. Uh, because I was able to slow down and listen to what we had in common,
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Right. Again, that kind of identification realize if I can just be neutral, if I can just give myself the space to be able to listen. And I, I have had people, I, my head fills with white noise. I, I fear, I feel fear coming up. I don't know this I project. I think I know. And, but if I can just give myself that pause, if I can be neutral, if I can wait to find out I'm so often I'm surprised. So I was surprised in this group of people I didn't would not have expected kind of, um, kindness. Compassion. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And where does that come from? That comes from, I'm going to get, let you off the hook. I'm going to let you off the hook and let you have your moment. And then we move forward. Right? Yeah.
George Snyder (06:18):
I, I agree. And I think, um, I think if, uh, I usually ask you George for the big takeaway, but I think all even mentioned the big takeaway here, it's training, it's training your mind to be neutral at the beginning. And it'd be, wouldn't you say is to not rush in with all these preconceived notions about people and being able to just stop and listen for a bit.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah. Yeah. You don't know. And that's a very, very powerful statement. I don't know, but it's a very difficult one to get to for me at the beginning. And it's been in recovery where I can watch people, I respect and admire say she, I don't know about find out or gee, I don't know. What do you think? Or, and that interaction, that sharing of our stories and opening that space. And I really think that's where real, real progress, real growth at, in a really fully recovered life happens when we create that space that allows us both to have a new experience. Right?
George Snyder (07:25):
Absolutely. George you've given us some real gyms here. Thank you so much. This was really fun. If yes, it is. It always fun when we get together. And if you want to know more about the old school Ben's mastermind group in, in this article here, I am going to put a link to George Snyder and you can send him a quick chat, a quick chat message on recovered life, right?
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Yep. On recovered life. All right, man,
George Snyder (07:49):
You will see me there and everybody practice being tolerant.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
Bye bye.

Damon Frank (00:03):
Hey, it is Damon Frank, and I'm joining you here on recovered life. I have a very special guests today, our very own George Snyder life and recovery specialist. How you doing today, George?
George Snyder (00:18):
Good to see you. Damon all is well,
Damon Frank (00:21):
It has been a crazy week, hasn't it? Yeah. In the middle of a pandemic. And, uh, I, you know, the reason why that I had you on today is I wanted to discuss our old school men's mastermind topic that we had on Monday and kind of what happened because it was one of those gatherings shorts where all week I was thinking about what people contributed, what I got out of it, how am I going to apply it? And I really, and I gotta be honest going in that, the topic I'm going to give Deborah the topic, what was the topic? It was desire. I really, I wasn't expecting the amount of impact that, that one had.
George Snyder (01:05):
I agree. I agree. I mean, you, you think about it, it seemed like a natural choice. We say, you know, TIS the season, it's all about giving and getting and shopping and one click. And so it felt right. But also when, when you talk about recovered life, I mean, you're talking about what else is that for both an obstacle and an enabling, uh, energy, but desire, what do you want? You know, and there's so much about what do I want for Christmas, all I want for Christmas. Right? So that, but the diversity of how people responded to it. I think that was what I found the most impressive. And how different ways of looking at what conceivably is the same issue. And yet it's not, you know, it's a personal thing. Yeah,
Damon Frank (01:47):
Yeah, yeah. And I like it, you know, just a little background for the people who are new to recovered life. Uh, the old school men's mastermind group has been going on. It's what I want to say four or five months now. Yeah. It's been going on for some time. I think since March.
George Snyder (02:04):
Yeah. The beginning of the pandemic. It was really when it started to say, want to get together, we wanted to get together and be a part of something.
Damon Frank (02:12):
Yeah. And George is the host of the old school men's mastermind group. And I, I wrote down some, uh, on my phone here, some notes that I wanted to ask you and you know, why tackle the issue and topic of desire? Why tackle that?
George Snyder (02:33):
Like we said earlier, it's, it's about trying to look at if you're going to have a fully, a full life and, and in recovery, a rewarding life or recovered life or real life. Right. RL. Um, it's about finding out what's in the way. A lot of it is about understanding the language of what we're talking about. When we talk about desire, what do you mean when you talk about desire? What do you mean when you say you, right. And how that can get in the way or propel you into productive action, into getting a more out of the life you're having. Right. A lot of this stuff we carry around with us or these old ideas, these conception about what it means. Um, you know, that recovery, somehow a lot of people think recovery is about not being able to have what you want. I have to give something up and it's really this it's it's, they're not mutually exclusive and it's not.
George Snyder (03:31):
I think what we find in recovery is, and the recovered life is that it's, it's not about either or it's about both, you know, it's about looking at your life and looking at the old ideas, identifying the old ideas and then implementing new ones. So the, the goal is about changing the, if you will changing the narrative and as people talked about what they, they saw, you know, you think a bunch of guys getting together, talking about desire, it's going to be like a locker room. And it was so far from that. And that too is about facilitating a space where you get to be with people you get to under, to, to feel like you can talk to people in a way that, um, other men in a way that, um, helps you get to what, what you mean when you say, I don't know what I want, or I'm in that, uh, wanting is a prayer instantly answered. You were instantly in that place of want and it's painful design.
Damon Frank (04:33):
Well, you know, George, th the thing that I got out of this, one of the things that I got out is that very early on, I noticed how I was even doing black and white thinking this desire, good, this desire, bad. How do you determine what is it? It may, maybe it's not even a determining good or bad. Maybe it's determining what works for you and what doesn't work for you with desire and recovery.
George Snyder (04:55):
Right? I think so much of what we're doing right now and what you have helped me so much and seeing is this is not about either, or this is not about this or that. It's about the human experience, desire as part of the human experience. You know, it's both as an obstacle, if it's going to get in the way and make you unhappy. But it's also what a little bit of pain is going to go do further. And we had people talking about, Hey, some of the older members, a lot of stuff, it's in the rear view mirror, but what do I want today? What are my dreams and ambitions today? Very different thing. But, you know, we get trapped in this thinking that by, as you said, Oh, that's bad. I can't think that I shouldn't do that. That is, those are the sorts of ways in which you got to get past that if you're going to really have a, what you say is you want,
Damon Frank (05:46):
You know, George w were you surprised by some of the responses in the group? I was honestly, and I think that's what, that's what kind of I carried with throughout the week. I had some preconceived notions. I think of what people would think about design. And it was not that at all. No. Were you surprised, were you,
George Snyder (06:09):
Yeah, absolutely. And I think this is, you know, when you get away from a model of teaching or a model of learning where the teacher has the answer, and everybody's going to guess it, you know, and the most basic to a place where there isn't any right answer gang, it's not about getting to the right answer. What's an interesting answer. What's, what's, uh, what's a beautiful answer. And so when you make that space where it's possible, if people feel comfortable about talking about what it is, then you get people, you, you, you sh, uh, we talk about the, the millionaires sat around the table and said, now write down what it is. You want it couldn't. Yeah, no, it's a genius story. Couldn't because so much of what we think is what we want is in fact, a pursuit of not even love APQ, I, I, I'm a firm believer in, you know, we're here to love and be loved, but I'd often a lot of the pursuit in our world today is about envy. We're pursuing envy. I have all this stuff that will impress people. I don't even like, um, and make them think something about me that isn't even true, just because they'll then love me. It's not love. It's kind of hate. Yeah. Yeah.
Damon Frank (07:24):
You know, I think, yeah. I think the breakthrough to interject here, I think that the breakthrough that was really interesting was, is so many people. And I thought it was just me. And I think everybody said, well, I thought it was just me that felt like, that felt that they should be pursuing certain things, or they had envy on certain things and desire about certain things that they really never, ever wanted. It wasn't, you know, to quote an old idea, basically in their head about what they thought perfection was, but it's not really making them happen.
George Snyder (07:58):
So like, um, I want, I think I'm supposed to, I'm supposed to want this. I don't really want it don't really like it. But on the other hand that sometimes we have a, I'm going to say I don't, because I'm afraid. I can't. And again, it's, it's teasing apart. It's this big ball of stuff that we come in with all these old ideas wrapped together and starting to take them apart. But it's in telling the story to me, telling your narrative and realizing maybe that's not even a true story about me anymore in recovery. I had a lot of ideas about who I thought I was. And I walk in to this world and talking to you talking, and then this group finding out that's not who I am. That's not who I it's not even who I thought he was or he was, or he was. And in that exchange, in that, talking to each other, you get to realize, Oh, you know what? I thought, I wasn't supposed to say this. And maybe there are other gatherings, other venues where no, it's not appropriate. Right. Maybe it's not a place where I would safe enough for me to share and fill in the blank in terms of where, where I can do this, gathering this old school gathering was a place where people could then say the unexpected. Right.
Damon Frank (09:11):
And I think this leads me to another question that I had for you. What do you think it is? Because week after week after week, we've been having these powerful experiences. What do you think it is about the old school men's mastermind? That's drawing this out, that this transformation,
George Snyder (09:27):
I think we come from a common background or a common understanding of certain. There's a great diversity in our, in our group. Believe me and I you've seen it too. We know that, um, and some of it's unexpected, some of it is just, uh, from different life experiences. Some of us from exactly the same graduating class in high school, but our lives took radically different directions. You know, some of us in the, in the same, uh, community, but in different directions. But what brings us together is a kind of certain, a touchstone, if you will, of a certain understanding of what it means to talk about spirituality, talk about a higher power, something bigger than me that's operating. And that, that feeling comfortable feeling that I won't make the room tip with all the eye rolling. If I talk about it, a spiritual path, um, is a, is a really, to me, a really helpful base from which we could,
Damon Frank (10:26):
And we're able to talk about outside issues. And I think, you know, for me, it's the collective of having 15, 20 guys, the minds of 15 to 20 guys. And they're actually tell you what they really think about how you can get to where you want to go or find out where you want to go, which is in some cases, you know, what, what was interesting is that the people that I thought had at the most together sometimes, right, that man, they must really know where they want to go. Sometimes there are the people who are the most, like, I have no idea where I want to go. Now. I knew where I wanted to go 15, 20 years ago when I started this, but I don't know where I want to go now. And I think, you know, George, that is the powerful thing that we're getting, uh, from, from the old school men's mastermind groups. So we've got one left, right? We've got one more left, one more, uh, with this group. And, uh, I, I'm super excited about it. It's going to be next week. And I guess we will tell people how they can find out more in the next coming weeks about the next cycle that we've got coming up. The next mastermind that we've got coming up for old school
George Snyder (11:34):
And the new year. Yup.
Damon Frank (11:36):
Yeah. Well, George have a really great day and a great weekend. And, uh, I'm looking forward to talking with you next week.
George Snyder (11:42):
Thank you so much. Talk to you looking forward to it, right? Bye.

Welcome back to recovered life. It is Damon Frank and I am here with always our favorite George Snyder life and recovery strategist. How you doing today, George?
George Snyder (00:12):
Hey. Good. Good to see you
Damon Frank (00:14):
Really good to see you. I've got a really great topic today that we were discussing on a phone call the other day and it is danger zones. That's what we're calling it. When you know that you are, could possibly be in danger because the holidays are happening right now. And a lot of parties going on, George, when do you know, and what should you do about the danger zone topic?
George Snyder (00:38):
You know, I think what happens is you get caught up in the flurry of activities and obligations. So I got to go here, I've got to go there. I gotta get, got to take care of that. And you can slide into these situations before you're even aware of it. Do you know what I mean? I think it's about not being, not really being present. I can really get out of myself out of my body, uh, during the holidays and just get caught up in, in the past, in the future, as soon as this, as soon as that, uh, and before, you know, it, you're suddenly in a situation where like, did I really agree to this? Does this make me? And so you have to be, uh, cognizant of that. Just does that make sense?
Damon Frank (01:17):
Yeah. I think awareness is really the big topic, right? Because one of the things that I know is that when you're going into a party or going into a situation that might be tricky for you, it might trigger you to do stuff. And you know, and a lot of people that watch this also are new to recovery, right? And so they haven't really been in situations like that. I always say, you have to have awareness. You have to be in the right here and now, and you have to check in with yourself before, during, and after those kinds of situations
George Snyder (01:46):
And be with the right people. And, you know, I say it all the time, everything's contagious. So you want to hang out with, people are gonna act, you're gonna catch what they got. So I think, uh, a wing, a wing man, uh, being aware, I mean, it depends early recovery sometimes we're so hyper-aware of not what we don't want to do. We can almost get through them without realizing it's can be a little later down the line when it's sorta like, Oh, I did that. That's not so big. And suddenly it's like, what's in this eggnog. You're like, oops. Yeah. So there's,
Damon Frank (02:26):
You do have to have a level of awareness about you about what's going on when you're in those situations. And you know, many people in, they find themselves during parties in bars or in people's homes, or, you know, at parties or situations where somebody just literally gives you some sort of alcohol or drug. Right. And you're, you're there. And if you haven't really thought through and kind of role-played that about how you would do that, how you would get out of that. And you're not aware all of a sudden you're in trouble,
George Snyder (02:56):
Right? I think too, I think one, the things I always say, what's the point and the point, I think for a lot of us in the holidays is people are trying to be nice. Now, people aren't trying to get you high, get you, well, maybe some are, but for the most part, people are just trying to be hospitable. And if then my rule is go early. So they know you're there. And don't say goodbye, because once things get party gets going, they're not going to miss you. What they're going to remember is that you came early and you were present.
Damon Frank (03:28):
Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And I think, know your limits too. Like I was talking with somebody the other day and he's new to recovery and he was saying, you know, I know that past seven 30, this is going to be a place that's going to be, it's going to be very uncomfortable for me. He goes about between the time of five and seven 30. He goes, there's a real reason for me to be at this event. And so he's now, you know, he's kind of rehearsed this with himself. So he knows when he gets there, he's going to make his exit around seven 25.
George Snyder (03:58):
Right. I used to think it was rude because things would get, start getting, start getting serious. And I thought, Oh, I would be impolite not to say I'm leaving. And that's when you know, no, man, now we're just getting now body shots, man. Now he can't leave now. So I learned that better to just slip away. So they're not going to miss you. They're only going to miss you if they think you're trying to break the party up, you know, or,
Damon Frank (04:20):
And you know, and as your true friends, if you're true friends, if you're really feeling uncomfortable, I, you, you mentioned the thing with the wing man. Right. And, and having a wing man or a wing woman that that is by you. Somebody that you could, that you could really, you know, trust to say, Hey, I'm feeling really uncomfortable. I think I have to leave. And you know, and that's okay. It's, it's better to leave people upset or wondering what happened. Then leave they're in a bad position.
George Snyder (04:49):
They never notice you've gone. And they remember that you were there because they were present when you were there early. That's the key I, again, and is this is COVID Christmas time, you know? So we're to say, Oh, there won't be any parties. Oh yes, there will. And a lot of these situations will start. No, we're going to be very careful here. And, uh, we're going to be very socially distant, but get things rolling. And suddenly we get a little lax. So one more time. It reason to show up early, be grateful, be pleasant, be that holiday in the holiday spirit and then slip away.
Damon Frank (05:27):
Yeah. Yeah. These are all really, really great danger zone, warning signs. Right. And I think, you know, just to recap, we've gone over them is accountability. It's like kind of knowing awareness. It's like, okay, look, I'm going to a situation that might be bad. I'm aware of that. And, you know, checking in before with people, uh, you know, having people that support you, being your wing man or wing woman around it. And then also having that plan, right. Having that plan of when you're going to go and when you're going to leave and wind enough is too much for you. Okay. Great topics here. Great. Seeing you, George. And I can't wait.
George Snyder (06:05):
COVID Christmas. Bye.
