Every two weeks Filipino-German host, Christine Abrigana, takes a close look at infamous and not so known cases that have certainly given Filipinos that feeling of fear and dread. In this, sadly, last episode of Lagim: A Filipino True Crime Podcast (for now), we look at the assassination of veteran broadcaster Percy Mabasa — better known as Percy Lapid. His killing in 2022 sent shockwaves through Philippine media, exposed a tangled network of alleged corruption, and raised urgent questions about the safety of journalists who dare to speak truth to power.
In this episode, I walk you through the case: the planning, the attack, the claims and counter-claims that followed, and why the investigation gripped — and frustrated — so many Filipinos. As Lagim goes on hiatus, I wanted to feature a story that reflects exactly why this podcast exists: to shine a light on injustice, to remember victims, and to interrogate the systems that allow violence to thrive.

In this special episode of LAGIM: A Filipino True Crime Podcast, I delve into a case that, at first glance, seems to have no ties to the Philippines. But dig a little deeper, and an unexpected connection begins to surface.
Lisa Marie Young was a vibrant, young Indigenous woman from Nanaimo, British Columbia. She was on the brink of major life changes when she vanished without a trace just before Canada Day in 2002. More than two decades later, no one has been arrested or held accountable for her disappearance.
The last person seen with Lisa was Christopher William Adair—a man who has never been thoroughly investigated, arrested, or charged in connection with her case. Yet, many believe he may hold the answers to what truly happened on that fateful night in June 2002.
Adair left Canada years ago and has since built a new life abroad. Today, it’s believed that he is living in the Philippines, having fallen in love with a Filipina and integrating into an expat community. Despite the silence he’s maintained over the years, Lisa’s family still hopes he’ll come forward—and finally offer the closure they so desperately deserve.
To bring more attention to this cold case, I speak with Laura Palmer, former executive producer at CBC Vancouver and the award-winning host of Island Crime, a podcast that has followed Lisa’s story for over five years. Laura shares deep insights into Lisa’s life, the investigation, and the elusive figure of Adair. We end this episode with a united call to action:

LagimFam, in this instalment of the Martial Law Series, I have a double feature.
Firstly, I feature the case of the Manili Massacre, one of the many Marcos-era massacres that was perpetrated against the Bangsamoro People. This part of the podcast is heavy with historical context in order to undertand the Bangsamoro struggle for self-determination better and trauma left by not only the Manili Massacre but all the atrocities inflicted on Muslim Filipinos.
In the second part of the episode, I talk about the Boyet and Primitivo Mijares case, one of those Martial Law mysteries that we still do not have full answers to. From being in the Marcosian inner circle to becoming a defector, Primitivo Mijares, dared to expose Marcos and his cronies and paid a very heavy price.

As the Philippines is getting ready to vote again, another favourite political hot-button topic is being whipped out to get the masses riled up and divided. The death penalty is a favourite talking point by politicians who wish to project a strong-man position towards their voters who are rightfully tired of crimes happening in the country.
But as studies have shown time and time again, the death penalty does not deter crime as addressing crime is all about looking at its root causes and addressing those instead.
This all reminded me of a case that caught the nation's attention back in 1994. Today, I will be covering the Leo Echegaray case, which highlighted so many things for me as a teenager who was just forming her opinion on big topics like crime and death. This was a rape case that turned into a political circus that exposed Filipino politics at its worst and the lack of understanding of how the death penalty is morally wrong and how it does not do anything to address crime rates in ANY country.

For this International Women's Month, I talk about the case of January Marie Lapuz.
In September 2012, January, a vibrant and beloved Filipina transwoman, was brutally stabbed in her Vancouver home. Her killer fled the scene, sparking a two-month manhunt and exposing the systemic failures that leave marginalized communities vulnerable in Canada.

First, I explore the case of Mitzi Joy Balunsay, a young and promising college student in the Philippines who was murdered in 2017 under harrowing circumstances that continue to haunt her community. I also examine the 2023 murder of Queen Leanne Daguinsin, another vibrant young student whose brutal death revealed unsettling truths about campus safety. Lastly, I recount the case of Jastine Valdez, a Filipina in Ireland whose life was stolen in an abduction that shook two nations and highlighted the need for systemic changes in protecting women.
Through these stories, I examine the failures and biases in community and institutional responses, and I question how society can better protect young women from such tragic fates.

In this episode, I feature three cases that all involve the heinous crime of modern slavery and its iterations. This episode is in commemoration of Anti-Slavery Day, which is celebrated yearly on October 18th.
The first case in this episode is from the US and it involves a Filipina who was kept hidden as a slave by her Filipino "employers" for a total of 19 years.
The second case is an Australian case that stunned residents of Sydney in the early 2000s. It involves a young Filipina who was initially hired as a babysitter but was quickly disempowered and enslaved by a Filipino-Australian couple.
The last case is a very recent one that was only concluded at the end of September. It involves a young 22-year-old Filipina who was fraudulently recruited by a Swiss-Filipino couple who promised her a residence permit and an education. Little did she know, she will be made not only a slave but a subject of the Swiss man's sadistic tendencies.

Towards the end of this episode, I feature a very informative and eye-opening interview with Marissa Begonia from Voices of Domestic Workers - a UK non-profit that is based in London.
As their website states, VoDW "is run by and for migrant domestic workers. Our organisation is supported by a Board of Trustees, Volunteers and a small and dedicated staff team.The Voice of Domestic Workers is an education and support group calling for justice and rights for Britain's sixteen thousand migrant domestic workers."
"We provide support for domestic workers who need to leave abusive employers and in many cases rescue them ourselves.We find each other emergency accommodations and pool our resources to provide food and clothing. Together we search for ways to overcome our isolation and vulnerability and demand respect as workers, as contributors to the British economy and society, and as human beings.We provide educational and community activities for domestic workers - including financial and employment advice alongside English language lessons, drama and art classes."

It has been two years since I last covered the case of Pastor Apollo Quiboloy and his megachurch, The Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name.

In this episode, I delve into the life and untimely death of the talented Filipino artist Bree Jonson. Known for her evocative, nature-inspired paintings, Bree was on the cusp of further recognition in the art world when tragedy struck. On 18th September 2021, she was found dead in a hotel room in La Union, a popular beach town in the Philippines. Beside her was Julian Ongpin, the son of a wealthy and influential businessman, which immediately added layers of complexity and controversy to the case.
Was it a tragic accident, or is there something more sinister at play? I explore the key facts that I collected when I was blogging about this three years ago. I talk about the mystery surrounding her death, and the fight for justice led by her family and friends. Through witness accounts, legal developments, and reflections on Bree’s artistic legacy, I honour her spirit while seeking to understand the truth behind her untimely demise.
Three years on and we are still nowhere near any answers to the many questions in Bree’s Death. Justice also remains elusive. I am going to keep re-releasing this episode for as long as this podcast exists.

In September 1995, Felipe and Evelyn Pestaño were anticipating the return of their son Philip who was working on board the BRP Bacolod. Their son was a young cargo officer in the Philippine Navy. What was supposed to be a heartwarming welcome turned into a bitter and tragic realisation that Philip had apparently died on board the navy ship under very suspicious circumstances. What followed were years of agony, legal battles and disappointment after disappointment for the Pestaño family.

Welcome to the first ever episode of Lagim: After Hours, a semi-regular bonus content series that I am embedding in the regular feed as well as on my YouTube feed.
The episodes are mainly a more freestyle vodcast but I have extracted the audio for the podcat-only audience in case you do not want to watch a video.
There are not a lot of SFX, bits and bobs, we just dive right into the topic and case and see where it leads us.
After Hours will cover smaller cases, cases that are still rather new and developing, cases that do not have lots of info on them in order to make a whole podcast episode out of.
I am also trying to be better with my video editing skills and with uploading other stuff on YouTube, so let us see where this goes.
Our first ever episode focuses on beauty pageant queen Catherine Camilon who recently went missing. As of the time of recording and uploading, she is still missing but there are at least 2 suspects who are currently identified and further 2 who remain unknown, at least to us, the public.

On the 2nd August 2023, Jerhode Jemboy Baltazar and his friend, Sonny Boy, planned a fishing trip to earn a couple of bucks. The boys set out to first clean their boats before sailing out but as they were minding their business, a group of police officers approached their area in Navotas and opened fire.
Sonny Boy saw his friend fall into the water, only to never surface alive anymore. Another young soul taken by the very authorities tasked to protect and serve Filipinos.
Jemboy's killing ignited discussions around the culture of corruption, violence and impunity within the PNP and how after Duterte's war on drugs, killings of unarmed, mostly poor Filipinos continue. Despite showing themselves as remorseful and willing to prioritise Jemboy's case, cracks would soon be seen that would expose how the police would always protect their own first instead of taking responsibility for their crimes.

Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs have long been dubbed as the Philippines' modern-day heroes. They leave family and friends, their comfort zones, their culture and homes behing to try their luck in foreign and far-flung countries, hoping to earn a better living than from the few opportunities offered back home.
In July 2022, Jullebee Cabilis Ranara, a native of Las Piñas decided to try her luck again in Kuwait after a successful stint in Bahrain some years before. In the early days of her stay with her Kuwaiti employer, there had already been signs that Jullebee may not have been entirely safe. Six months later, she would be found dead in a desert and the way she was found sent shockwaves through Kuwait and the Philippines alike.
But here is the thing...Jullebee was not the first and only one who was murdered in Kuwait. She was, in a way, the culmination of a series of deaths that would ultimately make Filipinos question their own government and whether it really was capable of keeping OFWs safe abroad.

On the 4th March, a group of armed men in military gear entered the residence of Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo. What looked to be a normal Saturday of meeting his constituents suddenly turned into a nightmare that his family is still living to this very day.
In a matter of days, it became apparent that the killing of Degamo was not just an unfortunate incident. Signs and evidence point at a greater conspiracy to eliminate the governor who may have stood in the way of another family's political ambitions.

I am releasing this episode a week earlier as it is my birthday weekend and I want to fully be in the moment for the next weekend and the next couple of weeks as I go travelling again.
So today, I am presenting the story of Blessie Gotingco, a Filipino expat in New Zealand who in 2014 met a cruel fate at the hands of someone who was not completely unknown to the authorities. This was a heartbreaking one for me to cover because at the very core of this case is the fact that this crime, Blessie's fate was avoidable. A maelstrom of bad decisions, lack of accountability and murderous intent ultimately led to her early passing, leaving behind a family that will forever feel this huge loss and how the system ultimately failed them and Blessie.

Two years after her death, justice for Filipino artist Bree Jonson remains elusive. This is frustrating, heartbreaking and a stark reminder that the wheels of the justice systemin our country is so slow and so hindered by power, influence and wealth that it might as well be stationary at this point.
I decided to re-release this to help the case in some small way, to have people care more or care again, to get her name out again because her family deserves closure and we, as Filipinos, need to see once in a while that justice is not entirely out of reach - something that most Filipinos do not believe in anymore.
I ask that you help me in making Bree's name appear in algorithms and mentions again. Say her name and keep her case in the media.

In this episode, I delve into a somber chapter of Philippine history as we explore the Escalante Massacre of 1985. Join me as I give a brief history of sugar and as I uncover the events leading up to that fateful day in the town of Escalante, Negros Occidental, and the tragic consequences that unfolded. I briefly discuss the political climate of the time, the plight of sugar workers and activists, and the brutal crackdown on their peaceful protest. In this Pride Month episode, I cover two cases involving a trans woman and a trans man, respectively. I talk about Jessa Remiendo from Pangasinan and Ebeng Mayor from Quezon City. I want to issue one of many trigger warnings at this point as some of the details in these cases are truly upsetting.
For the past two years or so, I have refused to cover cases of our fellow Filipinos within the LGBTQIA community during this month because I thought I'd be doing more harm than good. But in the wake of so many recent killings of trans people in the Philippines and worldwide curtailing of rights of trans people and other members of the LGBTQIA community, I made the call to finally feature these two cases that highlight just how vulnerable the community is.
I hope you find time to reflect on these cases and step outside of your comfort zone to truly understand the plight of our kababayans in the Philippines who are part of the LGBTQIA community. It is easy to not see the problems and issues they face when you are not part of this vulnerable community, so please keep an open mind and be willing to learn.

This week, come dive with me into an international case that has echoed globally - the Mitsero Killings, involving Cyprus' first recognized serial killer.
In this episode, I narrate the chilling events in the serene village of Mitsero in Cyprus. I cover the 2019 discovery of the bodies of several women and children, all foreign workers and their dependents, concealed in suitcases in a toxic lake.
I honour the victims' lives cut short and scrutinise the societal conditions that made them vulnerable to this heinous crime. This coverage includes the local police investigation, the Cypriot community's reaction, and the lasting effects on the island nation and beyond.
This episode aims to inform, engage, and encourage reflection on these global issues, transcending geographical limits. I shed light on the darkest corners of humanity to promote a safer, more empathetic world.
Moreover, in this episode I will be introducing you to a new crime fiction TV show that will be streamed on Prime on June 1st. The show is called the CATTLEYA KILLER, starring Arjo Atayde, Christopher de Leon, Ricky Davao just to name a few. It is a 6-episode tv series that takes place in the same universe as the 1996 hit film, Sa Aking Mga Kamay, starring Aga Muhlach and Christopher de Leon.
The events in the tv show take place a couple decades later when women’s bodies started to show up dead in the capital yet again. The police are reminded of the Cattleya Killer but cannot figure out who is killing the poor women since the serial killer, Gene Rivera, was shot dead by Christopher de Leon’s character in the OG Cattleya Killer movie.
I draw parallels and point out differences between the show and our case this week as both tackle serial killings involving vulnerable women. I hope you will not only listen to this episode but also go ahead and subscribe to Prime Video to watch CATTLEYA KILLER this coming June 1st.

On 11th October 2011, some residents of Brgy Putho-Tuntungin in Los Baños, Laguna woke up to a horrible discovery in one their canals. It was the body of a young woman who seemed to have murdered only a few hours before.
This discovery would send shockwaves all throughout the municipality of Los Baños, best known for the University of Los Baños, a top state university that sits in an open campus, embedded in the local community.

In September 2017, a family was left waiting and then reeling when reports emerged that their son has died as a result of hazing. A once brilliant light in his family's life, Atio's star was extinguished so prematurely after going through the intiation rites of teh Aegis Juris Fraternity, a fraternity based and supported by the University of Santo Tomas Law School.

It was 2021 and most of the world was still in the tight grip of the COVID-19 pandemic that started the year before. Countries had implemented strict lockdowns. Life as we knew it came to a grinding halt and we were being bombarded by daily updates of COVID deaths, as if it was just a part of our lives then.
It was therefore all the more jarring when news out of the UK talked of a missing Filipina and her young daughter. The news stood out. It was not COVID-related but, as it turned out, it was just as grim.

In 2006, two UP Diliman students and an elderly farmer from Hagonoy, Bulacan were forcibly taken, abducted and illegally detained in secret military facilities as a part of a crackdown on activists suspected of supporting the military arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines, the NPA or National People's Army.
The three desaparecidos' case would come to highlight a deeply corrupt military system, propped by the government at the time and a wildly obtuse way at looking at left-leaning activists and supporters, leading to brutal crimes and trauma.

In July 2001, the quiet Sydney suburb of North Ryde was rattled awake by a triple murder that seemed to have been the result of a robbery gone wrong. Little did they know that these murders were in the making for so long and could be traced back to Baguio, Philippines.

On the 5th August 2022, a young student from Palawan went missing. Three weeks later, a shocking discovery near her hometown opened more questions than there are answers.
This is a rather sad and terrifying case where the motive of the alleged perpetrators remains unclear.

LagimFam, it is time for another season finale.
In this season ender, we go back to the 1960s to look into one of the more prominent true crime cases before true crime was even a thing. In this episode, I look into the Cabading Family Murders and I also briefly discuss Filipino family dynamics and the topic of family annihilator again but this time with a male perpetrator in mind. I relied heavily on Nick Joaquin's article The House on Zapote Street and at least two articles from that time. It is an interesting case but most of all, it is a sad one and wholly unnecessary.

This week's case is a case from the diaspora. A listener suggested this case through the case suggestion list and I am glad I was able to cover it.
The case is about a Filipino-American family in California who was considered unassuming and very much run of the mill. At least for those looking from the outside looking in. But all was not well, especially for mother Annamaria Gana who in 2010 received a devastating cancer diagnosis. Everyday was a fight for the mother of two. By May 2011, it all became too much and Annamaria decided to take matters into her own hands. Feeling like her family would not survive without her, she decided to do something that she thought would be in everybody's best interest. Her actions would have devastating consequences and also raises questions about female family annihilators.

In 1996, the Philippines was rocked by news of a prominent congressman from Zamboanga del Norte, being accused of multiple counts of rapes and other sexual offences against an 11-year-old girl.
Congressman Jalosjos instantly became that person every parent warned their children about. For the young girl at the centre of the case, one may presume, followed years of agony as she had to tell her story over and over again in a criminal case that would not go away for at least four years.

In August 2017, young Kian delos Santos was killed during an anti-drug raid conducted in a poor neighbourhood in Caloocan. What the police hoped to just be another night full of dead bodies on the streets, quickly turned into a watershed moment that exposed the brutality, consequences and casualties of former President Duterte's war on drugs.

In the telling of Filipino history, the stories and heritage of the Indigenous Peoples of the Philippines are often missed if not completely erased. This is very much our loss because the Indigenous Peoples of our country are a small looking glass into which we could see a future that we could have had, had colonialism not happened. They stand for protecting ancestral lands, nature and for continuing with practices that we have long forgotten.
From the midst of the Indigenous Peoples in Ifugao/Cordilleras region came Macli-ing Dulag, an elder who became the face and voice of that region's indigenous population during dam project the opposition movement the 1970s when the dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr decided to build dams by the Chico River.

In the evening of 25th April 1990, life as the Bernabe and Castaños families knew it would change forever. When news of their son and daughter's abduction reached them, they initially had hoped to find young Cochise and Beebom, two bright students who studied law and mass communications at the University of the Philippines, respectively.

At the crack of dawn on 7th March 2021, the PNP and the Philippine army conducted a simultaneous attack on groups and individuals connected to certain leftist and human rights groups who were suspected of having connections to communist insurgents in Calabarzon. Just before Christmas 2021, the Maguad Family would be hit by a tragedy so horrific that it captured the attention of the whole nation. In the span of a single afternoon, the lives of two young and promising people were destroyed and no one knew who was responsible. After a year of constant pandemic news, lockdown blues and quarantine frustrations, Filipinos wanted to greet the year 2021 with more optimism. Some did but with a cautious and sombre attitude.
In the news, however, we did not see the usual stream of reports about fireworks injuries that usually get reported on 1st January. Instead, the Filipino were glued to their TVs after news broke out about a young 23-year-old flight attendat from Makati.
Christine Dacera's name would remain a headline for months and her case managed to highlight yet again the many flaws and lacking competencies within our law enforcement agencies, something that come to the detriment of the most vulnerable in Filipino society.

In this today's episode, we travel to Cebu and learn about the tragic case of Ellah Joy Pique who disappeared after leaving school on the 8th February 2011. Inevitably, her case will be hijacked by the media's coverage of the eccentricities of one of the suspects in the case and the PNP's investigation.
This episode highlights yet again the consequences of having a police force that is not entirely invested in the search for the truth but in merely batting off bad press. Pair this up with lacking forensic skills and you have one hell of a disastrous case at your hands.

I am not a horror podcaster, so I do not have the awesome talent of making it sound like you are really around a bonfire, telling each other spooky stories but these two cases here have some paranormal vibes.
We look into the Manila Film Centre Tragedy from 1981 and the mysterious case of Teresita Basa, a Filipina who was brutally murdered in Chicago, Illinois. Whether you believe in the supernatural or paranormal or not, one thing is for sure, these two cases will give you pause and might even almost convince you of the existence of something beyond our physical world.

Earlier this year, when I was preparing for Jennifer Laude's episode I stumbled upon a YouTube video about Filipino politics and in that video was Thysz Estrada. She spoke her mind so brilliantly and eloquently that I felt like I needed to interview her to get her thoughts on Jennifer's case. I felt like it was important to have that input from someone in the trans community to really bring the point home about how important this case was and still is.
The interview took place months ago despite the Jennifer Laude case being released only recently. I have been preparing for the episode for some time now and part of prepping for the episode was interviewing Thysz.
In this interview, we cover a LOT. We cover the Laude case itself, how Thysz felt when the case hit the headlines, what changed for her during this time; we talked about politics, the SOGIE Bill, religion and morals; and we talked about the things that need to be addressed in order to lift up the trans community in the Philippines.

The Jennifer Laude case hardly needs any introduction for most people. However, for those who are not familiar with this pivotal case in Philippine history, Jennifer Laude's case would become a watershed moment with respect to not only Philippine-US American diplomatic relations but also the question of how Filipinos view the trans community in the country.
Jennifer, a transgender woman from Leyte, worked in Olongapo City by Subic Bay. She was the main breadwinner of her family back in Leyte. She worked both as a hairdresser and a sex worker, something that a lot of Filipino transwomen do as survival work. After a night of work, Jennifer was found lifeless in a hotel room near a bar where she was just seen alive and well some few hours ago.
The revelation of who potentially her killer was sparked an international debate about diplomacy, sovereignty and human rights.

In 1991, the upscale neighbourhood of Dasmariñas Village in Makati woke up to shots being fired in their streets. Before dawn broke, the residents were confronted with at least one death and the reality that two people were injured.
The police investigation did not take a long time as police officers and agents of the National Bureau Investigation were able to easily track the shooter. He happened to be the son of a prominant jurist in the Philippines. His name wielded power and so began a trial and appeals process that looked like justice was going to be served swiftly. Nevertheless, after 17 years the tide turned and the families of those who were affected by the shooting could only watch in disappointment how justice was pulled from under them so quickly.

In July 1997, Cebuanos woke up to a grisly discovery in the town of Car-car when a local resident found the lifeless body of a young woman in a ravine. Little did the Cebuanos know that this was the start of one of the most controversial criminal cases in the Philippines. The case of the Chiong sisters' abduction and the murder of Marijoy Chiong would spark conversations and debates about the governmental overreach, controversial political influences, privilege, judicial misbehaviour and international intervention. The story is still seemingly not finished yet and it remains to be seen how this case will ultimately end in the face of all the conflicting interests and desires by the parties involved. In 2015, the Philippine National Police Special Armed Forces were set to capture and/or neutralise a prominent member of the southeast Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah. Operation or Oplan Exodus looked like it was a simple and straightforward mission. But what started out as a seemingly solid police operation would later turn out to be one of the bloodiest encounters with Filipino Muslim rebels in the Philippines. The fallout of the ill-fated mission would expose flaws in the planning process and missteps that ultimately cost lives. Listen now for the full story.

Lagim's third episode tells the story of 16-year-old Christine Lee Silawan from Lapu-Lapu City. On the morning of March 11th 2019, residents of Sitio Mahayahay in Lapu-Lapu City woke up to a gruesome discovery in their little village: the half-naked and mutilated body of Christine Lee Silawan.
Christine's death prompted national and international outrage, which put a lot of pressure on the country's police agencies to speed up investigation and find the perpetrator or perpetrators of Christine's murder.
After two arrests merely months after Christine's lifeless body was discovered, things finally looked like they could get better and justice could be served soon. However, this case experienced a lot of ups and downs and in the end, the questions remains about whether Christine got justice at all or not.

Episode two of our second season tells the story of the Mendiola Massacre.
After a tumultuous time under the Marcos regime, Filipinos looked to Corazon Aquino for a new chapter in post-colonial Philippines. For a lot of people, it was a time to heal and rebuilt and for some it was time to continue advocacies that were silenced and quite literally killed off under the Marcos dictatorship.
One of the groups that suffered horrendous injustice under Marcos was the farmers. They had hoped that with the newly-elected president, they would finally be heard and genuine agrarian reform could finally take place.
However, it became clear quite quickly that even this new president, who also happened to be a land-owning individual, was hesitant to commit to genuine land reform and land redistribution for the poor farmers who had been fighting for this for decades. On the 22nd January 1987, almost a year after the monumental 1986 EDSA Revolution of Peoples Power that ousted Marcos, farmers and their supporters marched towards Malacañang Palace to bring their grievances directly to President Aquino.
Before they could reach the Palace, they were met with police forces on Mendiola Bridge. What happened next would serve as a watershed moment in Filipino history to highlight that as long as the executive and even the legislative branches of government are comprised of landowners and landlords, there can never be genuine land reform and violence will always be a possibility.

In 2012, a horrific video depicting the sexual abuse and torture of 3 young Filipino children surfaced in the dark web. The creator of the video is an Australian man, Peter Scully, who made Mindanao his new home and who used Filipino children as objects in his depraved online business. The publishing of this video served as a catalyst not only to hunt down Peter Scully but also to have a hard and long look at the problem of online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC) in the Philippines. In this season-ender episode, I do not merely look at Peter Scully but also at the current state of OSEC in the Philippines.

After a successful first year as the highest rating noontime variety show, Wowowee wanted to celebrate big time. It had to be bigger and better in terms of venue, audience and, of course, prizes. The lead up to the first year anniversary episode of the show eas heavily promoted. As a result, people flocked to Pasig, to the PhilSports Stadium in droves in the days before the show. Hours before the show was supposed to start on the 4th February 2006, people were told only a few would have a real chance of winning cash prizes. During a mental health crisis at home, his family sought out the help of the Antioch Police Department in California, thinking they could help their brother and son. Three days later Angelo would die after having been unresponsive and in a coma. What happened to Angelo and what does his experience show about the way police officers handle mental health crises? Claudine was a kind and compassionate young woman who had a bright future ahead of her. But her short life came to an abrupt end when in March 2001 she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Claudine fell victim to a group of men who started their evening with crime in their minds. What started out as a petty phone-snatching scheme ended up in the death of a promising young person whose family would not stop fighting for her until those responsible for her death are held accountable and locked away.

The Maguindanao Massacre is one of the most atrocious examples of political rivalry gone wrong. The ruling Ampatuan clan had gone unchallenged for so long in Maguindanao. Their political clout, power, wealth and private militia made sure that every local election would end in their favour. But in 2009 their unopposed hold over Maguindanao would be challenged by one person from their rival clan. When Esmail Mangudadatu decided to challenge an Ampatuan for the Maguindanao gubernatorial post, it set off a chain of events that cost the lives of not only other Mangudadatu relatives but also lawyers and journalists, making this also one of the most hostile crimes committed against members of the press in the Philippines to date. The Pepsi Paloma Story has weirdly become an inevitable part of Filipino pop culture and true crime genre. Researching this story in light of the Me Too Movement was even more impactful than I thought it would be.
