  • Morning Peter! We talked a little about retirement planning & I'm actively working on moving our 401k's around & I thought I'd share. I'm leaning towards rolling our 401k's & maybe some savings into a fixed differed annuity. Interest rates right now are around 4.4, and if I can lock in for maybe 5 years, that would help us to get closer to the nest egg we need to retire in. Ask Gary what he thinks about fixed differed annuities 🧐

Fun fact of how I found you guys. I'm a personal finance nerd and was looking for a new podcast. I heard about Stacking Benjamins from Joel on the How To Money podcast. I downloaded an episode and it happened to be the one you guys were on. I never listened to another episode of Stacking Benjamins but I went back to the beginning of yours and listened to every one until I was current.

I have a request for a future topic. I hear of Peter talking about growing up in a cult. I'm not sure if he means that literally or if it was more of a overly strict evangelical Christian environment. Regardless, I can relate. I was deeply involved in a conservative evangelical Christian church for many years. I'm now questioning many things and practices that I held for so long. I'm having difficulty getting past the guilt in letting it go and moving on. I would love to hear Peter discuss this topic more if he was comfortable doing so.

Keep up the great work! I love the information shared (and the vulnerability in doing so) and the entertaining banter.

HeyBig G!!! I have a question for you to ask Peter for me!! I want to take probiotics to help out my gut microbiome since I’ve had my c-section. I feel like I would instead do things a bit more naturally than taking medication. Does he have a good recommendation on which probiotic to take? I’ve been doing a bit of research on it but I know he’s all about it

Hilariously funny with some great educationI have been listening for most of this year and have really enjoyed the bantering between all of you guys. I learned so many things that I can use in my life. Glad you guys took time over the summer to relax and refresh. I’m looking forward to having 2 weekly episodes again. I listen while I’m working out and it makes my time pass so quickly. Not sure why Sarah puts up with as she says “These Assholes”. She makes the show and holds you two clowns up. Never let her leave. Thanks again.

I really appreciate this podcast and the helpful information it provides on such a wide variety of topics. I love the banter between hosts, and they don't use a lot of inside jokes that the audience wouldn't get (I've heard this on other podcasts) and are able to balance between being light-hearted and funny but serious at times. They really speak to their audience and aren't just focused on each other. Thank u for this podcast!

New listener here; heard you guys on the Stacking Benjamins Podcast and I'm binging from the beginning. I wanted to ask about insulin. I heard Benjamin Bikman on another podcast advocating getting your insulin checked in addition to glucose and a1c. His argument is that insulin level will tell you your level of insulin sensitivity better than glucose. I signed up to get mine tested, but I wanted to know if this guy is a quack and/ or if there are any downsides to getting this test done (other than the $23 it costs). Peter has been hacking a local grocery app and getting some great values.  He details how he is doing it and how we can all do the same with our local grocery stores.

Gary

Gary discusses the idea of “The Beginners Mind.”  We define what this is and how Gary has been trying to implement this with coaching, work, and in all aspects of his life.

Sarah

Sarah finally did her taxes?  Who cares?  Well, this is important because she normally does it right away because she needs the money.  This year she almost forgot about it because she is handling her money so well that she didn’t have the need to get the tax money so quickly.

She also has a fail because she has spent about $1000 on veterinarian bills in the past month with more to come.

Win or Fail Mastermind Group Session:

Peter

Peter has another money fail.  Over the past year, he has experienced lifestyle creep.  Specifically his monthly food bill has risen from $1000/mo to $2600 in February of 2022.  We discuss how this happened and how he and his wife plan to fix it.

Gary

Gary has started paying his credit cards weekly.  Doing this has created an odd sense of accomplishment for him, along with improving his credit score by getting more on time payments and lowering his credit utilization.

Sarah

Sarah helps us to appreciate people, experiences, and more in the moment.  Specifically, she wants us to tell people how we feel about them while they are in our lives rather than when they are gone.  This is great advice Sarah!

Some people like it hot and some like the cold.  But, did you know there are actual health benefits to both and it's not just a comfort thing?  Today, in episode 114 of The Fat & Broke Podcast, we explore the concept of heat exposure, what it is used for, and who can benefit from it.

Is Peter trying to justify the purchase of his sauna? We discuss!

Leave A Voice Memo | Review The Show | Follow | Subscribe | Newsletter

Action Items/Conclusions:

Sauna bathing is associated with many health benefits, from cardiovascular and mental health to athletic endurance. It is generally considered safe for healthy adults and may be safe for special populations with appropriate medical supervision. Heat stress via sauna elicits hormetic responses driven by molecular mechanisms that protect the body from damage, similar to those elicited by moderate to vigorous-intensity exercise, and may offer a means to forestall the effects of aging.

Show Summary:

It is safe to say that all parents want their kids to grow up to be gritty, resilient, and independent. Accomplishing this is a whole other story. Today, we bring Jennie Boyer back to the show. If you liked what she had to say about saving money on groceries in episode 78, you will love what she has to say about how she teaches her kids the skills they need to be successful. In today’s show, we will discuss Jennie’s 10 tips for raising strong, independent kids and give examples of how we can all do the same.

Leave A Voice Memo | Review The Show | Follow | Subscribe | Newsletter

Intro:

We welcome Jennie back to the show and give some background as to her life and family.

Jennie’s Top 10 Tips For Raising Independent Kids:

  1. Purposeful Neglect
  2. Choose your battles – and win the ones you engage in.
  3. Have fun with them/don’t take yourself too seriously. Take time to be present for things that are important to them. They won’t listen if they don’t think you care. They will be too hurt. Poke fun at yourself to show them that life doesn’t have to be so serious. Let them see you fail and how you react.
  4. You need to live what you preach – kids are experts at spotting a hypocrite.
  5. Set expectations and communicate them early and clearly – NO basement dwellers, good grades, kind to each other, money expectations, needs v wants, etc.
  6. Talk about life skills, what they will need to know, how it will impact their lives, ask if they are working on that skill. I do this ad nauseum. My kids HATE this until they move out, and then they are so grateful.
  7. What do THEY want? Ex. Where do they want to go to college? What life skills do they want to learn? What classes do they want to take? What approach do they think will work to get their homework done? Throw in a few of your own by asking the question, “Have you thought about…”
  8. Set aside time to teach skill – expect to teach it 3-7 times; tell them, show them, let them try it with you there. If they think they can do it better another way – let them try. They might be right! (this builds confidence and lets them know you find them capable and are willing to listen to their ideas.)
  9. Let them try – and fail, teach them how to handle the failure. How to get help if I’m not there. If they fail, talk about all they did right, and then help THEM problem solve how they can do it differently next time. Then let them try again.
  10. Let them fly and cheer them on!

Peter:

Pete takes us through a thought experiment regarding assigning intent to someone's behavior and how that affects our experience at the moment. He suggests that if we remove the common practice of assigning intent, we will find that we get less mad and/or annoyed at the moment. Changing your mindset can change your reactions and actions.

Gary:

Have you ever said “what do you want to do today?” and then ended up doing nothing? It happens to Gary all of the time. So heading into a week off between X-Mas and New Years Day, Gary comes up with a system to make sure this does not happen and that he and his family have a great week off together. To do so, he draws upon the lessons he learned from Folly Beach.

Sarah:

Sarah has decided to get a second job as a bartender. She made the choice to learn a new skill that she can use forever and to make more money to support her current lifestyle. There are two sides to the money-saving/budgeting coin: earn and spend. To properly budget you can either spend less, earn more, or both. Sarah has chosen the earn more side of the coin for now. We also discuss the concept of talent stacking and how that can serve you through life.

Do you want to live forever? OK, well maybe not forever. But are you interested in living a long, healthy, and fulfilling life? It is safe to assume that most people would answer yes to that question. These communities are called Blue Zones and today we are going to share their secrets with you.

Intro:

It’s Christmas Eve as we record this show. We are all back in the studio and ready to go!

Main Discussion:

Today’s show is all about the Blue Zones and what they share in common? Why do these people live for so long and how can we replicate it?

The discovery of the Blue Zones is what changed Peter’s life trajectory. He recounts the story of this, how he found them, and what has changed since that time.

After that, we get into what the Blue Zones are, where are they, and the 9 traits that bind them called the “The Power 9.” We also discuss how far away from the Power 9 we have moved as a country.

Blue Zone Power 9:

  1. Move Naturally
  2. Purpose
  3. Downshift
  4. 80% Rule
  5. Plant Slant
  6. Wine at 5
  7. The Right Tribe
  8. Community
  9. Loved Ones

Action Items:

  • Move as much as you can. Rely less on technology and move more.
  • Have a sense of purpose daily, especially in retirement.

Introduction:

The squad continues remote recording due to Peter’s Covid. We wish everyone a Happy Holiday and then get into the show.

Main Show:

Sarah’s W.I.N’s:

  1. Do you drink coffee? Of course, you do. In America, 70% of people drink coffee daily. A recent study looked at coffee consumption and sleep. The results show that coffee and blue light combined have the biggest negative effect on sleep. Some other tips for coffee consumption are not to drink it when you first wake up, have some mid-day, and don’t have any after 3 pm.

  2. To top off our conversations on sleep, Sarah gives us tips on better sleep. Here they are:

  3. Keep the room cool. 63-65 degrees is optimal.

  4. Schedule worry time an hour before bed to get it out of the way.
  5. Have a consistent wake-up time.
  6. Get outside first thing in the am to get air and sun. If you can’t, use a sun lamp.
  7. Keep it really dark at night.
  8. Practice gratitude.

Peter’s W.I.N’s:
1. A new study has shown how longer lives are tied to physical activity. In Peter’s ongoing quest to live longer, he continues to find studies that help him do this. The article talks not just about living longer but how to do so while also living well. We also debate whether or not humans are cheating the system and living too long.

  1. Peter is obsessed with muscles. He looked into how sleep deprivation affects skeletal muscle growth. Surprisingly, sleep deprivation results in skeletal muscle loss.

Gary’s W.I.N’s:

  1. A new bill in Congress would give a 30% tax credit on the purchase of an E-Bike up to $900. We discuss the possible benefits of an E-Bike and whether or not Gary will be getting one.

  2. Recently, a CEO of a big company was interviewed and he was discussing why he rents his home instead of owning it. We discuss all of the hidden costs involved in owning a home and the myth of your home as an investment. We also discuss a simple equation you can use to determine whether or not you should rent or own where you live.

Fan Feedback:

Hi, I have a fitness/weight-loss question. I am 45, am 5’4” tall, and weigh 127. I would like to get back to 120 but am struggling to get there. I work out about 4-5 days a week and usually take walks on the days I don’t go to the gym. I spend most of my workout on strength and do very little cardio. I have a few questions.

  1. If I spend 45 minutes in the gym, how much time should be on cardio? What should be my target heart rate during cardio be for weight loss?

  2. On my lose it app, I am allowed 1250 calories in order to lose .5 lbs per week. If I burn 250 calories during my workout, should I add those calories to my daily allowance?

  3. Are all calories created equal? If I eat 1250 calories of chocolate cake or 1250 calories of lean protein and veggies, does my body look the same?

Thank you for any guidance and please reach out if you need more info.

Love the show!

Intro:

We jump right into the show. No chit-chat, just right to the good stuff!

Main Discussion:

The three of us discuss the areas of health, money, and life that we slack on during this time of year.

Many people, including us, have used the phrase “after the holidays” as an excuse to live poorly from October through November. We have a conversation about what these things are, why this happens, and what we can do about it.

Action Items/Talking Points:

We thoroughly cover what end of year moves to make in the following areas:

  • Health
    • Learn to say no.
    • Plan your events and limit them to the ones that really matter.
    • Make intentional decisions about what to eat/drink when there.
    • Eat before you go.
    • Use a small plate and make good choices.
    • Bring a healthy option.
    • Share your health goals with other people.
    • Don’t wait for the New Year to start your health goal. Start today.

    • Create a regular and holiday budget.
    • Gifts don’t make the holiday “special.”
    • Stay off of social media.

    • This is a good time of year to declutter.
    • For everything that comes in, get things out.
    • Use the declutter as a way to teach your kids about giving.

    • Spend time with the people who make you happy.
    • Cut the cord on bad relationships before the holiday.
    • Don’t stay with someone through the holidays just to avoid awkward conversations.
    • You don’t have to like your family and you don’t have to spend time with them if you don’t like them.

Main Show:

Sarah’s W.I.N’s:

Sarah encourages all of us to take naps. We discuss the value of taking naps. She also shares with us when and how long naps should be. Naps can improve the quality of our sleep along with mood, reaction time, and more.

Peter’s W.I.N’s:

Peter had a bizarre encounter at the grocery store. A woman approached him and asked him why he was buying a certain yogurt. He then went on to give her an entire lecture about nutrition and his approach to it.

A recent 12,000 person study looked at how the behavior of our social circles can impact our own. The study showed that having obese friends will make it more likely for you to be obese. The team discusses why this happens and how we can use this to help ourselves and others.

Show Summary:
In today’s show, we will help you learn what to eat, how much to eat, and when to eat it in order to maximize performance!

Leave A Voice Memo | Review The Show | Follow | Subscribe

Intro:

The show starts with us talking about Sarah’s social life. We move on quickly to the show.

Main Discussion:

We explore Peter’s knowledge of sports performance and nutrition. The goal of the show is to help our listeners and people they know learn how to eat and drink to achieve an optimal performance state.

Eating for health and eating for performance are very different. If you eat like this without being highly active, you will most likely gain weight. This methodology is very specific to people performing high-intensity exercises. Specifically, this type of diet revolves around making energy stores available continuously to prevent a drop in performance and/or fatigue.

Action Items:

  • The day before competition matters. If you have an active day (practice, etc…), you will need to replenish your carbohydrates that night. If you did not, this is not as important.
  • Avoid anything that makes you feel bloated or causes GI distress.
  • Breakfast on the day of performance should be “normal” and be consumed 2-3 hours before the event.
  • High glycemic foods can be consumed 30-60 min prior to performance
  • Avoid foods high in fat and fiber close to game time due to the length of time it takes to digest.
  • Sports drinks, fruit, and other simple carbohydrates are good immediately before and during the performance.
  • Post-performance should be a good, healthy, well-balanced meal along with re-hydration.
  • Protein is essential for the recovery of muscle and the prevention of injury/breakdown.
  • Sleep is as important to recovery as food and water.
  • Hydration is key to good importance.
  • Hydration occurs leading up to the performance, not during.
  • Caffeine can play a role in performance for the right person and age.

Key Topics:

  • Performance
  • Carbohydrates
  • Carb-loading
  • Glycemic Index
  • Sports Drinks

In today’s WIN, we discuss DIY Savings, Burning Fat, Avocado Secrets, China’s Gaming Laws, Weak Old People, & Decision Fatigue

Leave A Voice Memo, Review The Show, & Follow Us Here

Introduction:

A quick hello and right into the nonsense.

Main Show:

Sarah’s W.I.N’s:

We discuss the 8 amazing secrets of avocados. Peter and I mock most of them due to the vagueness of the article. We also discuss Gary’s issue with this fruit!

Is decision fatigue a real thing? We discuss what this is and how to combat it.

Peter’s W.I.N’s:

Peter is mad at an article that promotes exercise for “old, frail” people. We believe that even older people can lift heavy things and should.

A new study showed the strength training alone could help burn fat. A reminder that body composition matters more than the number on the scale!

Gary’s W.I.N’s:

A woman wrote an article celebrating that she spends $725/mo on lawn care, home cleaning, and 3 days/week of prepaid meals. Gary disputes this article and does some math to show how this is a bad idea in most cases.

China has severely limited the hours/week that kids under 18 are allowed to game. Gary loves the idea behind it while noting that he does not want our government doing the same thing. We discuss kids and the detriments of gaming.

Gary’s W.I.N’s:

Taco Bell is now offering a monthly subscription service. We discuss how unhealthy this is and we also discuss what subscription services we would like to see that we don’t have yet. Introduction:

Sleep deprivation is a very real and huge problem in this country. Sarah leads a discussion on the importance of sleep.

There is a new act passing working its way through Congress that will allow broader use of FSA money for things like youth sports, the gym, and more. The name of this act is the PHIT act. Learn more here.

Gary’s W.I.N’s:

Is minimum wage going up a good thing? Gary argues that the rise in wages will accelerate the rise in the cost of goods. He is really calling out the companies for deceptive promotion of the rise in the minimum wage because they pass the cost onto the consumer.

A new study from UMass has determined we only need 7000 steps a day to reduce our risk of mortality. It is good to take more steps, but it does not have a change in mortality beyond 7000.

Leave A Voice Memo, Review The Show, & Follow Us Here

Introduction:

We start the show with Peter being creepy and sneaking into Gary’s house. The team discusses the beauty of living in New England.

Main Show:

Sarah’s W.I.N’s:

Sarah discusses wasted Covid-19 vaccines. Over 15 million have been wasted. That equals about $427 million.

Sarah gives us 7 steps to increase happiness!

Peter’s W.I.N’s:

Peter discusses intermittent dieting which is different from intermittent fasting. New research suggests a protocol of 2 weeks of dieting followed by 2 weeks of maintenance is an effective way to lose weight. The theory is that we do not allow our metabolism to adapt to caloric restriction.

Peter tells us that 67% of what teens eat is ultra-processed food. This is not good. We discuss ways to not allow this to happen with our kids.

Gary’s W.I.N’s:

Gary talks about Scotland trialing 4 day work weeks (32 hours). Other countries have done the same with good success. This has been shown to improve productivity and happiness.

Gary discusses Joe Rogan’s stance on the Covid vaccine as well as his usage of Ivermectin. He feels as though he is being irresponsible and should use his platform for good.

Sarah discusses all of the reasons why laughing is healthy for us. She details many physiological and psychological benefits of laughter.

Peter’s W.I.N:

Show Summary:

In today’s show, we help you get started on your financial independence journey by building space between what you make and what you spend. In Part 2 of our FI series, we will discuss debt and emergency funds.

Leave A Voice Memo, Review The Show, & Follow Us Here

Intro:

We attempted to play after our last episode and realized we are all old.

Win/Fail:

Gary:

Gary has been more social lately. WIN.

Sarah:

Sarah has started training for her half marathon and has been sticking to the schedule. WIN.

Peter:

Peter needed a new boiler. He capitalized on the current Chase Sapphire Preferred 100,000 bonus point offer by getting a card for him and his wife. Together they will get over 200,000 points just by using it to buy the boiler they need anyway. That equals about $2625. We also discuss other perks of using credit cards. WIN.

Main Discussion:

Gary leads the discussion for Part 1 of our Financial Independence Series: The Gap. The main takeaways and talking points are as follows:

  • Step 1 is to build the gap between money coming in and money going out.
  • Start with a full reset. Stop everything except what has to be paid. Then slowly add things back in.
  • Track your money in & money out using Mint, YNAB, or any other system you want.
  • You CAN and SHOULD try and make changes to the big three: Shelter, Transportation, Food.
  • Eliminate the little expenses you forgot about or don’t value.
  • Pick the things you spend on that you value and want to keep. It can’t be everything!
  • Pick one of the budgets that work for you, and stick with it.
  • Make more money.

Leave A Voice Memo, Review The Show, & Follow Us Here

  • Gary has trouble valuing experiences
  • Gary does not know how to be happy for other people.

  • Start your 401K immediately
  • Live at home as long as possible
  • Buy a used car

  • Don’t try and keep up with your friends

Show Summary:

In today’s show, we discuss what we learned about money as kids and how that has shaped our money journeys.

Leave A Voice Memo, Review The Show, & Follow Us Here

Intro:

Its been raining for 3 days at the time we start the show. It has ruined memorial day weekend for all of us. The good news is that we got a chance to podcast today since all of our plans have been canceled.

Win/Fail:

In our win/fail segment:

The team celebrates a TEAM win of achieving 2000+ downloads!

Peter celebrated his 20th anniversary with his wife. He had a great weekend with just his wife. WIN.

Gary recalls being called out by a patient for not going to the doctor yet. He immediately scheduled the visit and lab work. Gary is thankful for the patient and the show for holding us accountable. WIN.

Sarah talks about canceling numerous subscriptions that she no longer uses. WIN.

Main Discussion:

Next, we dive into our topic of the day, “My Mamma Always Said! | Our Money Personalities & Journeys”

We start the show by talking about the 7 money personalities as listed by Ken Honda. Each pod member identifies as one of the seven. Gary and Peter identify as Compulsive Savers and Sarah is a Saver/Splurger.

We then move on to discuss what we learned as kids about money as it pertains to money, saving, spending, investing, budgeting, and more. Each team member recalls how money made them feel when they were kids and what money was like in their homes growing up.

Following our childhood stories, we talk about what our personalities are now, how they have evolved, and what we still need to improve going forward. Gary and Peter were spenders when they were younger and morphed over time into savers. Sarah has recently started making some changes towards being more of a saver and less of a spender. Gary and Pete talk about many mistakes they made when they were younger. Hopefully, Sarah avoids these same mistakes!

Lastly, we talk about how money makes us feel. Sarah feels stress around money but feels like she is making progress with learning more about money. Peter attempts to be indifferent to money by automating as much as he can. Gary is working hard to let some of his money go and worry less about spending.

Action Item:

Sit down and think about your money journey to this point and are you happy where you are? If not, make some changes. Gary suggests finding a money mentor and getting better educated around money.

In today’s show, we discuss what we can all do to build a better immune system. After experiencing Covid-19 in 2020, we all want to know what we can do to be more resilient.

Leave A Voice Memo, Review The Show, & Follow Us Here

Intro:

The pod squad starts the show by talking about what we should call our fans. We reluctantly decide on “Frokers”. After that, we talk about why Peter is shirtless and just did 30 pushups.

Win/Fail:

In our win/fail segment:

Peter has made some changes around the way he approaches food with his kids. He has decided to make an effort to be less outwardly judgemental about the choices his kids make around food. His role will be to bring the food into the house and it stops there. His kids will have to make choices about when, how much, etc. WIN.

Gary is excited to talk about a patient that has been listening to us and decided to make big life changes around health and money. WIN.

Sarah admits to being an asshole for the past few weeks and APOLOGIZES!. Gary soaks in the apology but gives Sarah a pass due to her life stressors. FAIL.

Main Discussion:

Next, we dive into our topic of the day, “Immunity Now | How To Build A Better Immune System.”

The F&B team talks about how we have more influence on our immune system than we may realize. After experiencing Covid-19, we provide actionable tips for us and our listeners to take to build a more robust immune system.

We start by talking about the difference between Passive and Active immunity.

Passive immunity refers to masks, hand washing, vaccines, etc. Active immunity is what we can do to improve our actual immune system so that if the passive immunity fails, we still have the ability to fight bacteria, viruses, etc.

Peter brings up the 4 domains of immune health:

  1. Nutrition
  2. Exercise
  3. Sleep
  4. Stress

Action Items:

  1. Follow the 90/10 rule. Get 90% of your food from whole foods.
  2. Get your lab work done to see where you may need to supplement.
  3. Exercise daily and often to keep your immune system active and circulating in your body.
  4. Sleep 7-9+ hours per day to keep your immune system strong. Create a quiet and dark space to sleep. Cooler temps are better (65-68 degrees). Eliminate LED screens an hour before bed.
  5. Do not over-stress your body or mind. Don’t overtrain your body. Use meditation, sleep, and crying to control your stress.
  6. Get Vitamin D through the sun and supplements!
  7. Use passive immunity precautions to prevent illness when you can.

Leave A Voice Memo, Review The Show, & Follow Us Here

Intro:

It is late again and Gary just wants to start the show! So we START!

W.I.N. #1:

Gary discusses how meditation can change your brain. Specifically, meditation can improve the size and activity of the pre-frontal cortex which gives us more control over our amygdala. A great discussion around meditation ensues.

W.I.N. #2:

Peter talks about the benefits of drinking alcohol. An article he was reading states that moderate alcohol consumption has positive effects on our heart and stress levels. We also talk about the effects of alcohol on sleep and how that would contradict what the article is saying. We have a good conversation about the good and bad of alcohol.

Intro:

Gary tries a new dramatic intro and it fails big time. Sarah and Gary discuss a pizza night success. No cheese pizza is delicious, costs less, and has fewer calories!

W.I.N. #1:

Peter directs a conversation about the detrimental effect of visceral fat. Weight around your belly makes you at a higher risk for heart disease. We also discuss how awful the BMI is as an indicator of health. Using the BMI, Peter is considered obese even though he has less than 10% body fat. The key takeaway is that stomach fat is a good indicator of underlying visceral fat and can be deadly.

W.I.N. #2:

Gary leads a discussion about unconscious wakefulness and how the results of bad sleep can be deadly, especially in women. The team talks about ways to improve sleep to avoid unconscious wakefulness. The most important thing you can do to improve your sleep is to reduce noise and light pollution.
