In this episode of Diversity Conversations, Dr. Tommie Lewis speaks with Anyah Land, Certified Executive Coach and founder of SOAR Growth Consulting, about one of the most significant workforce transitions of our time.

Drawing from her experience in human resources, public health, diversity and inclusion, and executive coaching, Anyah explores the human impact of organizational change—from the fear of displacement experienced by seasoned professionals to the challenge of preparing emerging leaders to carry institutional knowledge forward.

In this conversation, they discuss:

• Why your position should never define your value
• How to separate your identity and purpose from your job title
• Why experienced professionals may struggle to let go during workforce transitions
• How AI can preserve institutional knowledge and prepare the next generation of leaders
• The role of the S-curve in understanding growth and resistance to change
• Why you shouldn’t run from AI—but learn how to work with it
• How to create a growth plan that is bigger than your current employer

Anyah also shares three essential reminders for navigating the future of work: know your WHY, recognize your strengths, and document your accomplishments.

Your job may change. Your title may disappear. But your ability to create value goes with you.

Negativity can easily dominate our attention, shape the stories we tell ourselves, and influence how we see the future. But protecting our hope and joy does not mean ignoring life’s challenges—it means refusing to let those challenges define us.

In this inspiring episode of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis is joined by Gisele Marcus, Vice Dean and Professor of Practice at Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. Drawing from her personal journey and extensive leadership experience, Gisele shares practical ways to remain grounded in hope, resilience, and possibility—even when facing criticism, uncertainty, or adversity.

• Why our brains naturally focus on negativity
• How positive emotions strengthen creativity, resilience, and relationships
• Three practical ways to protect your hope and joy
• How to guard what receives your attention
• Why reframing your story can change your outlook
• The importance of protecting your circle and emotional environment
• Why protecting your joy is not selfish
• How each of us can choose to multiply hope instead of fear

This meaningful conversation reminds us that our present circumstances do not define the substance of who we are—and that hope gives us the courage to keep dreaming, creating, connecting, and moving forward.

Listen now and consider: Are you multiplying fear, or are you multiplying hope?

In this live episode of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis and Tommie Lewis explore a timely question with real leadership implications: Is AI making us smarter, or is it making us lazier and more disconnected?

What begins with stories about golf, learning, humility, and the journey of growth opens into a rich conversation about artificial intelligence, creativity, critical thinking, and the risks of relying too heavily on technology. Eric shares how tools like ChatGPT can expand learning, speed up problem-solving, and support innovation when used with discernment. Tommie brings a thoughtful and grounded perspective on change, skepticism, and the importance of learning how to use emerging tools wisely.

The conversation then shifts into another urgent issue of our time: loneliness. Together, Eric and Tommie reflect on how technology, remote work, changing social habits, and modern communication patterns may be affecting human connection, belonging, and emotional well-being.

This episode is a thoughtful dialogue on leadership, adaptation, community, and what it means to remain deeply human in a rapidly changing world.

In this episode:

  • Is AI helping us think better, or making us mentally dependent?
  • How leaders can use technology without losing authenticity
  • Why discernment and supervision still matter with AI tools
  • The connection between convenience, communication, and loneliness
  • Why human beings still need real community, presence, and belonging
  • Practical reflections on staying grounded in an increasingly digital world

In this episode of Diversity Conversations, Tommie Lewis is joined by Paul James (Scholar, President & Chief People Strategist at Lighthouse Strategy Consulting) for a powerful dialogue exploring one central question:

What does it mean to be human? What begins as a story about a simple communication mistake evolves into a profound exploration of belonging, accountability, vulnerability, and the courage to remain teachable. Paul introduces a transformative question that shifts the tone of any conversation:

“Do I have your permission to fail?” From there, the discussion expands into leadership, the myth of meritocracy, privilege systems, relearning history, and how organizations can build cultures rooted in dignity rather than dominance.

This is not a conversation about perfection. It is a conversation about humanity.

AI Response to the Question: What Does It Mean to Be Human? "From my observation across countless conversations, cultures, and lived experiences, being human means embracing imperfection without surrendering responsibility. It means allowing space for mistakes while choosing accountability over shame. It means staying open enough to learn, even when learning requires unlearning.

To be human is to hold conviction without cruelty, to lead without dehumanizing, and to build belonging through reciprocity rather than “got you” moments.

Humanity is not defined by flawlessness. It is defined by the willingness to grow."

In this powerful installment of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis sits down with lifelong friend Doron Hunter for a raw and deeply human conversation about identity, resilience, and the cost of cruelty.

Doron shares stories from growing up in Lincoln Heights, the difficult transition into Princeton schools, and the truth behind what it takes to earn a place when doors keep closing. He also opens up about missed opportunities in professional football, the painful weight of expectations, addiction and recovery, and the moment faith became the turning point of his life.

Near the end, Doron shares something deeply personal: his experience developing vitiligo later in life and how it changed the way people treated him, including a heartbreaking encounter that brought him to tears.

What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a long-term condition in which patches of skin lose pigment because the cells that produce melanin (melanocytes) are destroyed. It is not contagious and can affect anyone.

This episode is a reminder that “sticks and stones” was never the truth and that our words can either injure or heal. It’s also a call to raise children and communities with empathy, curiosity, and love.

In this unscripted, heartfelt episode of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis and Tommie Lewis follow the conversation where it naturally leads: toward faith, peace, leadership, and the power of simplicity.

Eric shares how a daily devotional practice helped calm anxiety and bring him back to the blessing of today. Tommie reflects on what it means to walk in faith without being consumed by worry, and how peace can become an ongoing miracle when you stop feeding negativity.

At the center of the episode is a powerful metaphor: “the two white socks.” Sometimes the instruction is simple, even almost too simple to believe. But the message is clear: don’t overcomplicate what God is trying to do through you. In a world addicted to noise and complexity, real leadership often looks like humility, reflection, and choosing love.

They also discuss miracles as lived experience, the tension between spiritual aspiration and human imperfection, and a closing insight that resonates deeply: the idea of “going viral internally,” when a revelation reverberates within you until it transforms how you live and lead.

If you’re looking for peace in the middle of the storm and clarity without a script, this conversation is for you.

In this episode of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis and Tommie Lewis explore what it really takes to lead when life feels heavy, emotions run hot, and the pressure is real.

They unpack the difference between self-reflection and self-regulation, why valuing people matters most in tense moments, and how faith, humility, and practical tools help leaders stay grounded. Eric shares a candid story about a public moment that required accountability and apology, and Tommie reflects on a powerful example of emotional self-control (and the lack of it) in a shared space.

This is a real-time conversation about leadership that’s not performative, not perfect, and deeply human.

In this episode:

  • Self-regulation vs. self-reflection (and why timing matters)
  • The hidden weight leaders carry into everyday interactions
  • Faith as a moment-by-moment anchor (even when you’re not at your best)
  • Practical tools: therapy, journaling, sounding boards, and emotional honesty
  • Business leadership during uncertainty: networks, relationships, and listening for pain points
  • “It’s not a sales pitch, it’s a relationship.”

Bates, Senior Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives and Academic Affairs at the University of Cincinnati College of Arts & Sciences. Dr. Bates brings clarity, courage, and heart as she shares how her upbringing on Chicago’s South Side shaped her leadership, her commitment to equity, and her belief that you can be fully yourself and fully intellectual at the same time.

Together, they explore what’s happening in higher education right now, why academic freedom matters, and how fear-based narratives are impacting classrooms, faculty, and students. Dr. Bates offers a grounded perspective on authenticity with wisdom, the role of faith without performative religion, and why this generation of young people will not be silenced, reminding many of the student-led movements that changed history.

The holidays have a way of revealing what matters most, especially when life brings storms you didn’t ask for.

A holiday leadership conversation on giving, dignity, family expectations, and finding joy and faith while weathering personal storms.

In this week’s episode of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis and Tommie Lewis reflect on the realities many people face during the holiday season and what it looks like to lead with humanity when expectations, emotions, and finances collide.

They explore three holiday “realities”:

  1. Those doing well financially and how to give relationally, not transactionally, without making generosity a spectacle.
  2. Families with limited resources and young children with big expectations and how to protect dignity, redefine “Santa,” and model values that last.
  3. People who have means but are exhausted by the commercialization of Christmas and how to set boundaries with intention, not moral superiority.

The conversation also turns personal and powerful: Eric and Tommie open up about storms, faith, receiving help without shame, and the clarity that comes when life forces a pivot. They revisit a childhood memory, the Charlie Brown tree, as a reminder that what makes the season meaningful isn’t the transaction, it’s the connection.

Plus: a reflection on the “war on talent,” overlooked potential in underserved communities, and why values associated with DEI still matter even when trends change.

Sponsor spotlight: Game Time Budgeting, helping employees transform their relationship with money through mindset, behaviors, and simple systems.

Merry Christmas from our team to yours. We love you, and we’ll see you next Saturday 🙏🤗

Some of the most important conversations in our lives don’t happen often. But when they do, they change everything.

In this episode of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis and Tommie Lewis explore what they call rare but consequential conversations. The kind of conversations we avoid, delay, or don’t know how to navigate, yet they shape our relationships, leadership, peace, and future.

From learning how to respectfully end a conversation with a boss, to unpacking family traditions that lost their original meaning, to defining what real friendship actually requires, this episode invites listeners to slow down and reflect on how they show up in the conversations that matter most.

You’ll hear powerful real-life stories, honest reflections, and thoughtful distinctions around:

  • How to have hard conversations without burning bridges
  • Managing up and setting boundaries with authority figures
  • Family patterns we normalize but never question
  • The difference between having friends and being one
  • Forgiveness versus allowing yourself to be used
  • How to evaluate where your time, energy, and care truly belong

This conversation is not about perfection.
It’s about courage, clarity, and choosing intention over avoidance.

If you’ve ever struggled with knowing what to say, when to say it, or whether to say it at all, this episode will meet you exactly where you are.

In this special holiday episode of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis and Dr. Tommie Lewis dive deep into “The Season of Giving and Grace.”

From 2:30 a.m. moments of quiet reflection to a breakthrough idea about “trillion-dollar stars” in underserved communities, Eric and Tommy explore what it really means to give, receive, forgive, and reset.

You’ll hear:

  • How giving beyond material gifts—time, attention, empathy, presence—can matter more than anything money can buy.
  • Eric’s powerful story of loaning his brother $10,000, not speaking for two years, and then being led to call and apologize, which completely transformed their relationship.
  • Tommy’s honest account of wrestling with anger, control, and change at home—and how a real encounter with the Holy Spirit “hit the reset button” on his heart, teaching him to live with more grace, abundance, and compassion in real time.
  • A fresh look at diversity conversations themselves: why this show is not just for DEI experts, but for anyone willing to bring their real stories, questions, and humanity to the table.

This episode is a vulnerable, hope-filled invitation to ask yourself:

  • What am I really giving this season?
  • Where do I need to extend grace—to others and to myself?
  • What new story is God (or life) inviting me to live into?

In today’s episode of Diversity Conversations, Eric Ellis and Tommie Lewis explore the power of embracing gratitude in a “wild, wild” world—where politics are volatile, emotions run high, and it’s easy to get lost in fear, anger, and division.

Eric shares how his faith and gratitude practice shape the way he views leaders, conflict, and even the most polarizing figures in public life—choosing to see people’s humanity instead of letting them become “boogeymen” in his mind.

Tommie brings a powerful story from Dolores, Colorado, where he spoke to elementary, middle, and high school students about “My Helping Hand”—who has helped you, who have you helped, and who will you help? That assembly opened space to address student suicide, mental health, and asking for help through the lens of love instead of fear.

And yes… you’ll hear the unforgettable moment when Tommie decided to race a high school student in his dress shoes 😂—and how that painful hamstring taught a beautiful lesson about connection, humility, and being “more than your job title.”

Throughout the conversation, they return to one core invitation:
👉 Don’t let hate, outrage, and fear train your nervous system. Train it with love, gratitude, and purpose.

Eric was joined by guest host and my brother Wendell Ellis.  They had a vibrant discourse about the progress that has been made for marginalized people over the last 50 years. There are some who say no progress has been made and others who say that it’s undeniable that progress has been made.  They landed they both can be true.

The show spent a great deal of time encouraging the audience that inclusion is the best way to move forward. That success is best achieved through collaboration.

This show seeks to invite people to answer the question “Are they truly interested in inclusion or simply being included.” Our concern is that most people are unwilling to do the work of inclusion, if they are not the direct benefactor.  If this is the motivation, that perspective will not lead to a more inclusive society! Ultimately self interest are best met through inclusive strategies, which result in a bigger pie and more opportunity for all.
