Under the leadership of missionary Doug Hodges, the church has been diligently ministering to this community for the last six months. Despite the slow start and minimal spiritual fruit initially, recent developments have ignited a wave of excitement across the congregation.
We're thrilled to share that three young men have recently decided to surrender to Christ. Latin cultures love their loud music. Often times the music is so loud that the people who are listening to it cannot even talk with each other because of the volume.
Although the loud music can be a bit frustrating at times, this love for loud also spills into other areas of Dominican culture like street preaching.
There are many street preachers in the Dominican who preach and yell so loud that it is nearly impossible to understand what they are saying!
The discussion of loud music and loud preaching led Jason and Gary down the trail of discussing how we contextualize the gospel in a way that it is understood.
Contextualization had nothing to do with a compromise on doctrine, but rather the manner in which the gospel is presented so that the hearer can understand in their own cultural way.
Don't worry! Gary and Jason didn't convert into wind-sucking preachers who yell at every street corner, but their observations of culture do play a significant part in how they prepare and share.

Today's episode is a bit different. There's no polished introduction, and I'm flying solo without Gary. But it's special because it's centered around someone who holds a profound place in my life - Greg Smith. This is an audio of him preaching the celebration of life service for his beloved late wife, Carol.
Let's journey back to 1992. I was lucky enough to cross paths with Greg Smith during a mission trip to Cancun, Mexico, an experience organized for our high school graduating class. It was there where Greg had devoted many years of his life to serving the people of Cancun.
Though our time together was brief, life had other plans for us. The whirlwind of my youth and the absence of social media meant we lost touch. I was just a young, clueless 18-year-old then, with a lot to learn.
Time flew, and I found my calling. My first immersive experience was at a language school in Costa Rica. From there, my journey took me to Venezuela for four soul-enriching years, and now, my heart has found its home in the Dominican Republic.
God, with His mysterious ways, reconnected me with Greg. Was it through Facebook? Honesty, I don't remember.
Our conversations moved from typed words to video chats, eventually becoming our cherished weekly tradition. We dive deep into discussions about language, culture, and, above all, our faith in Jesus.
I'm grateful to have Greg as not just a friend but also as a guiding mentor in my life. His wisdom is unparalleled. If there's one thing I'd want for all of you, it's to have a friend like Greg. Be prepared to be stretched! Being a missionary has challenged so much traditional thinking for Gary and Jason. There are so many things that we as Americans assume should be done one specific way. One major challenge in the Dominican Republic is driving! If you have never driven in the Dominican Republic, we recommend hiring a driver if you come here for a short time. As you drive down the road, you are swarmed on every side by motorcycles and scooters. Sometimes you can be innocently going down a two-lane road, and there is a van barreling toward you at a high rate of speed! These moments don't always solicit the most sanctified responses! The real challenge is when things have to be dealt with within a body of believers. Do you assume that someone has a character problem if they arrive late to a planned activity? What if that person doesn't have a car or motorcycle and depends on public transportation? All these scenarios make up the daily life of a missionary in the Dominican Republic. You spend your whole life studying the word of God. You feel pretty buttoned up in your theology. God calls you to the mission field, and you find yourself being a student all over again! Foreign culture is a great teacher. Both Gary and Jason have been challenged to dig deep into why they believe what they believe. While solid doctrine never changes, cultural elements often cause us to evaluate modes and methods. There is no question that baptism is done by immersion, that it has no salvific value, and it is a testimony and example of dying to our old self and being raised again to walk in the newness of life. But, how often should you hold baptism services? Should you make someone take a class on baptism? How do you deal with the cultural aspects? Many people have very pentecostal or very catholic views of baptism. How do we handle those situations? Listen to Gary and Jason's conversation as they unpack this critical subject. It is always a good thing when God moves us toward spiritual growth. Often it is outside the scope of our comfort zone. Invariably, when He gives us these opportunities, they are designed to draw us closer to Him and give us new opportunities for the gospel. God has recently opened a new ministry opportunity for Gary. He has been taking a "walk alongside" role by helping in his wife's rescue ministry. Gary describes himself as the "silent partner" who is not there to take the lead, but to be there to serve. Listen how God has used this opportunity to grow Gary as well as minister to a group of women that is often marginalized, misunderstood, and avoided. We all stand in need of grace and this is a beautiful testimony of how this new opportunity has been used by God to grow Gary in his walk with God.

It's incredible how small incremental changes can affect an outcome. As believers, we often go to such extremes of change that we cannot maintain our set trajectory because it is beyond our ability to attain. An undeniable part of ministering to others is that you will be the recipient of an attack at one time or another. As we all journey through the process of sanctification, often the Holy Spirit reveals some areas of our character that are tender spots. This is true as we engage in the discipleship process of others. Even when we are most well-intentioned, our help will not be received as help at all. Our help will provoke a sharp emotional response from those to whom we are ministering. This is why it is essential that our focus and strength come from the Lord and not man. It is easy to get discouraged when you intend to help someone, and their reaction is to attack.
The opposite side to this scenario can be equally dark as believers can elevate ministers to a "deity" status, which can be harmful to anyone who does not have strong accountability in their life. We have all seen the unfortunate demise of many in ministry because they grew in popularity, and the messenger became more important than the message. Ultimately they were vulnerable and succumbed to temptation.

The unfortunate outcome was an attack from those to whom they were ministering. We must never forget that God is watching. God knows our motives and our shortcomings. Part of the price we will pay for investing in the lives of others is occasional attacks because we have dealt with a sensitive spiritual area in their life. To be clear, this does not always mean confrontation is present; at times, it can simply be our presence that frustrates someone because deep in their heart, they know they are doing wrong.

This episode is a unique exchange between Gary and Jason as they explore the two extremes of the pendulum of Christian celebrity culture. Many times as believers we are quick to idolize someone for their faith especially when they are a famous personality. We must be very careful that we don't get lost in idolizing someone just because they are famous. The other side of the pendulum was brought about by Jason as he responds to a social media post that was very condescending regarding a famous person so supposedly professed Christ, but there were glaring inconsistencies in their post-conversion testimony. We must remember that as believers our job is to be faithful to the message of the gospel. We cannot force change on anyone. If there is going to be a genuine change in someone's life it must be through their surrender to the Spirit. Being critical or condescending does nothing to help anyone grow. We must sow the seed and allow God to bring the increase.

Navigating the waters of culture can be a challenge. Such is the case in the Dominican Republic with the celebration of Halloween. Halloween is not a celebrated holiday here on the island. Gary shares his perspective from living in the Dominican Republic which develops into a conversation between Gary and Jason regarding experiences they have had on the mission field. There is definitely an influence of occultism that covers all of Latin America. With the gospel being the most important and central message we must always do our best to never do anything that could potentially do harm to the gospel including celebrating holidays that we are accustomed to within our home culture.
Life on the mission field can present some situations that are not contained in any college or seminary textbooks. When you mix in some cultural anomalies, your job becomes very interesting. In every culture and situation, the most important thing is to always base what we believe and what we do on the scriptures. The Bible must be the final authority. This episode touches on the topic of spiritual abuse. As ministers of the gospel, we are tasked with making disciples and then teaching disciples to make more disciples. Unfortunately, there are missionaries and pastors who sometimes abuse their position of leadership and stewardship as platforms to build their own egos and kingdoms. We must be reminded that our job as ministers is to constantly point others to Jesus and teach them to learn to discern the voice of the Holy Spirit in their life. Training disciples is accomplished through life-on-life discipleship. There is a danger in making those to whom we are ministering co-dependent upon us where they look to us for their spiritual answers instead of going to the Word and discerning the voice of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Steve Curtis lived the disciple-making life. His son JT was the beneficiary of a Dad who modeled Great Commission living for his son. Now that Pastor Steve is in glory, JT was able to step into his dad's shoes and continue the disciple-making process at Providence Baptist Church.
Pastor JT Curtis and Brian Tomblin and some other faithful men from Providence Baptist in Franklin, KY, recently came to the Dominican Republic to survey the mission work taking place in San Pedro de Macoris. During their visit, Gary and Jason had the opportunity to sit down with JT and Brian and talk about the process of making disciples both at home and abroad. Illnesses like dengue and malaria very serious and cannot necessarily be prevented. There are many other serious illnesses that can potentially kill you when you step on foreign soil. When you step outside of the United States you face a whole different world of healthcare and illness. God knows how to orchestrate our steps and provide exactly what we need when we need it. Listen to Gary share his story about a serious health scare that could have claimed his life. Thankfully, God had everything taken care of and miraculously provided the right people in the right places at the right time. We are God's creation and He is the ultimate authority and there is no illness or situation that can claim our life without God's permission. One of the tremendous opportunities that have been placed in the hands of the DR Vision ministry is the Las Palmas Christian School. Las Palmas is a beacon in the community offering top-notch education with a biblical world view. Las Palmas students are sought after on both the sacred and secular levels for the level of excellence they have achieved through their education.
