Marvel’s Netflix series were extremely popular with the majority of the MCU fandom. Telling street level stories about characters more concerned with protecting everyday people they provided a window into a different angle of the MCU that other series were unable to provide. Due to the compound breakdown between Marvel and streamers due to the impending Disney+ service and Marvel Studios’ breakdown with Marvel TV those popular shows were canceled, and it seemed for a time that they would be swept under the table and never mentioned in the MCU again. Thankfully, that did not occur. Daredevil appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk, and Echo while the Kingpin appeared in Hawkeye and Echo. Once again, the street level side of the MCU was being shown. In this episode we talk about the fulfillment of that promise with the series, Daredevil: Born Again. Presented as if it were a fifth season of the Netflix series (allowing for a skipped fourth season) the series takes us back to familiar characters with a new scenario. Wilson Fisk becomes mayor of New York and the reality for Daredevil and other so-called vigilantes is forever changed. Our cast discusses the new scenario, the use of the characters and how they interact, pacing, the combat/special effects, and more.

The 90’s was a time of great innovation in animation. The medium had been dominated by stand-alone episodes and simple storylines for decades. In the 90’s even the traditional networks’ programming pushed the envelope. More series with serialized storytelling were being told. The War of the Rohirrim was the first attempt by Warner Bros to extend the use of their Middle-Earth license to include stories beyond the written works of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Rogue One has gained a cult following within Star Wars fandom and has a wide appreciation from a large swathe of the fandom. In this episode we discuss Andor. We talk about the plots of the series and how we appreciated or didn’t how they all weave together. Star Trek: Picard was the second series in the new Star Trek line initially created by CBS: All Access and later continued by Paramount Plus. The series provided a bridge for fans who didn’t connect with Star Trek: Discovery by providing recognizable characters from the height of Trek popularity in the 90’s. While many fans appreciated this effort some did not appreciate the darker tone of that first season. A second season followed with a lighter tone but many plotting issues. Month’s ago, Seth Rogen made waves in the entertainment industry with his comments on criticism while guesting on The Diary of a CEO podcast. His comments spoke to the emotional pain suffered by entertainers who are the objects of negative reviews. His words called into question whether critics understand the impact of what they’re writing and implied that reviews shouldn’t include negative material because of its impact on others. In this episode our panel of actors and reviewers examine these comments and ask ourselves “Is there a place for criticism?” “What should or shouldn’t be allowed?” “Should only the professionals be allowed to do it?” We also discuss the role of the critic in society, understanding your audience, and how to use tact. Don’t forget to stay after the closing song to listen to our outtakes.

The series was a win for Marvel as well, introducing the X-Men characters to a generation of viewers and catapulting the affiliated comics to the height of their success. In this episode we take a look back at 1992’s X-Men series. We discuss the role that gender diversity had in the series’ success. We also talk about the use of theater trained actors rather than traditional voice-over artists. We also opine on the role that the scripting played in the series. Along the way we discus the animation, the characters, and why we feel that the legacy of this series has endured.

This episode is dedicated to the memory of Michael Edens.

We’ve all had the experience. We see a movie that we know is truly awful by any measurable factor, but we love it anyway. In this episode we discuss the phenomenon that makes something “so bad that it’s good”. We talk about our favorite movies that fit that description and discuss our experiences with the specific media. We also get into what makes a movie “so bad that it’s good” different from movies that are just bad or movies that you disagree with the majority about whether it is bad.

This is it, the first ever, action packed episode of The 42cast, your Ultimate Answer to Fandom, Geekiness, and Everything. We’re a group of podcasters who love talking about geeky subjects. Each week we’re going to come to you with a new topic from the geekisphere. We may talk about a movie, TV show, comic book, video game, novel, trends that we see in fandom or we may even do an interview. The main thing is talking about the things that we love and having fun doing it.

For our first episode Sam, Ryan, Rachele, and myself sit down to ask each other questions and give you some insight into just who this cast of crazy characters is. This conversation covers lots of geeky subjects and will be a great example of the type of topics that will be covered in the show.
