What inspires people to embark upon seemingly impossible challenges? How do they prepare both mentally and physically? And what are the secrets to completing 105 Ironman Triathlons in 105 days?

Welcome to this week's podcast, featuring Britain's Most Inspiring Maniac, Sean Conway!

Sean, originally from a small town in Wales and with roots in Zimbabwe, is not your average athlete. He is the living embodiment of relentless determination, fearlessness, and an indomitable spirit. An internationally acclaimed ultra-endurance athlete, author, and a renowned motivational speaker, Sean famously broke the world record by completing 105 Ironman Triathlons in 105 days, shattering perceptions and previous records alike.

Remarkably, he believes he could have extended this extraordinary feat of human endurance "indefinitely."

Yet, looking back, things could have played out very differently.

In the early 2000s, Sean was an unhappy school portrait photographer. He hated his job, and as is often the case, comfort was killing his ambition, so Sean promptly quit.

He sold his business for a pound, and at 30 years old, with no money, no spark, and no plan B, Sean embarked on a new life of adventure in its purest form.

  • In 2010, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in a penguin suit.

  • In 2012, he cycled 750 miles from London to the Alps.

  • He swam the length of Great Britain in 135 days—the fun part being, before that, the furthest he had swum was three miles in a pool.

  • He set the world record for cycling unsupported across Europe, completing the 4,000-mile route in 24 days.

  • He also completed the Ultimate British Triathlon, running from John O'Groats to Land's End without any prior training.

His list of successes is lengthy, as are his setbacks (https://www.seanconway.com/).

Join us as we explore Sean’s transformation from a 30-year-old self-professed ordinary man to a 43-year-old record-breaking endurance athlete. We'll dissect his unique mindset, the resilience that fuels him, and the guiding principles that shape his life.

Today, Sean will share insights on embracing massive challenges without fear of failure, his approach to life's hurdles, and how he manages to keep pushing when the body screams stop.

We'll also dive into some of his most memorable adventures and the philosophies that drive him, and why it's important to set audacious goals.

Prepare to be inspired by a story of true grit and adventure. Whether you're an athlete, an entrepreneur, or simply someone who loves a good challenge, Sean's story is a testament to what we can achieve when we dare to push beyond boundaries.

After all, “Adventure isn’t all about climbing mountains or rowing oceans. Adventure, in its purest form, is simply a way of thinking!" ~ Sean Conway

Embrace the challenge and conquer the impossible. This is the unwavering spirit of the Royal Marines, encapsulated in the famous motto, "No cuff too tough." It's a creed that inspires the bravest and boldest to push beyond their limits, to improvise, adapt, and overcome any obstacle in their path.

Today, we have the honor of hearing from a true embodiment of this creed - Simon Jeffries.

As a former Royal Marine Commando, Simon has faced some of the toughest challenges imaginable. But with eight years of service and three tours under his belt, he has emerged as a true beacon to the power of mindset, resilience, belief, and courage.

"Mindset is a skillset, but if you don't treat it as that, things are never going to change." ~ Simon Jeffries.

From the battlefield to the boardroom to co-founder of the Natural Edge, Simon's indomitable spirit has never wavered. Through his experiences in special forces, he found a kindred spirit in his business partner, John Sykes-Popham. Together, they have forged a path of success that reflects the same unbreakable determination that drives the Royal Marines.

This is a conversation about the primacy of purpose, the power of passion, and the pursuit of self-discovery. It's about resilience, self-accountability, and overcoming limiting beliefs. And it's about the embracement of pain as a crucible for growth and development. Ultimately, this is a conversation about what it means to forge true confidence, to chase down your dreams and live a life of happiness and purpose.

  1. In Segment 1- From Battlefield to Boardroom: Simon shares his background as a Special Forces soldier and his transition to a management consultancy in London. While it was prestigious and well-paid, Simon felt like something was missing in his life.
  2. In Segment 2 - The Wake-Up Call: Simon talks about his wake-up call in 2017 that made him realise he wasn't living life to the fullest. He quit his job and pursued his passion for coaching. Simon discusses the struggles he faced in finding his purpose and the importance of mindset and motivation in overcoming obstacles.
  3. In Segment 3 - Forging True Confidence with Purpose: Simon explains how he helps others find true confidence by focusing on personal development, growth, and living with purpose. He shares tips and strategies for developing a growth mindset and overcoming self-doubt, imposter syndrome, the fish bowl effect, comparison paralysis and more.

Imagine being one of the very few people in history to descend deep into an Antarctic iceberg and come face-to-face with the mysteries hidden beneath the ice. Imagine then being trapped inside this underwater abyss whereby the split-second decisions you make determine whether you live or die.

This is the remarkable true story of today’s guest Jill Heinerth.

Jill is one of the most accomplished underwater explorers on the planet who has accomplished feats that only a handful of people in history have ever achieved.

She famously captained an expedition in 2001 to become the first-ever to cave dive inside an iceberg, notably the B-15 iceberg in Antarctica, the largest recorded iceberg roughly the size of the island of Jamaica and was the leader of a team that discovered the ancient watery remains of Mayan civilisations.

During this phenomenal conversation, Jill takes us on an intimate journey deep into the inner depths of her world, whereby fear must be reconciled, and a mission's success balances between knowing one's limits and pushing the envelope of human endurance.

We discuss topics such as facing fear, the Tham Luang cave rescue, sexism, imposter syndrome, and the challenges that come with pushing one's limits, such as physical and emotional stress, isolation, PTSD to the grief and loss which go hand in hand to the career she loves. More people have died exploring underwater caves than climbing mount Everest, as Jill emphasises the importance of embracing fear as a positive catalyst, and how by embracing darkness, we learn to not just manage fear but thrive within it.

Jill's story is a testament to the power of pursuing one's passion and pushing one's limits. By embracing fear, leaning into challenges, and persevering through adversity, we can achieve greatness and discover the extraordinary within ourselves.

"Jill’s extraordinary path from under Antarctic icebergs to tropical blue holes is proof that real life is far more exciting than fiction." ~ James Cameron, Academy Award-Winning Director

Jill is an absolute delight. I loved getting to know her—and I know you will too. Jill's message is one of resounding resilience, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to living life to the fullest as when we transcend the fear of failure and terror of the unknown, we are all capable of great things, personally and as a society.

We might not always know where the journey will lead us. We might feel a burden of difficulty. But all paths lead to discovery. Both good and bad life events contribute to the fabric of who we are as individuals and as a civilisation. If we continue to trek purposefully toward our dreams, into the planet and beyond, we just might achieve the impossible.

Enjoy!

Tired of leaders who prioritize power over trust? You're not alone.

According to the Edelman Trust Barometer 2023, a lack of faith in societal institutions triggered by economic anxiety, disinformation, mass-class divide, and a failure of leadership has brought us to a deeply and dangerously polarized state.

But don't worry, in this podcast, we've got you covered. We speak with globally renowned keynote speaker and founder of The Trusted Executive, Dr. John Blakey, who shares the importance of trust and purposeful leadership in the 21st century.

During our conversation, John notes how leaders can inspire trust in their people by exhibiting nine habits of trust under the three pillars of ability, integrity, and benevolence.

Our discussion emphasizes the need for purposeful leadership that prioritizes the power of trust over the trust in power.

Here are some key takeaways that you won't want to miss:

Importance of Trust:

John shares a personal experience from 18 years ago when his boss questioned his response to a good day and asked if he was "too effing nice". In the 21st century, leaders need to be creative in defining great leadership and rely on trust instead of power. The Trust Executive Foundation attracts leaders who prioritize trust.

Nine Habits of Trust:

We delve into the details of John's nine habits that inspire trust in people and why transparency is critical in building trust. Businesses need to contribute to more than just profit-making.

Evolution of Power:

We map out how the evolution of power is changing, and how existing power struggles will formulate in the market. The challenges in driving factors that lead to sell are not new, but crisis can be the catalyst for change.

Creating Clear Visions:

We explore why business leaders need clear visions for their organisations and how to galvanise movements for change both internally and externally. We draw comparisons to current notable leaders and how the Edelman Trust Barometer notes the loss of trust in governments and media requires business leaders to articulate new visions and agendas. We also focus on the Triple Bottom Line vision (people, profit, planet) and why it's a priority for investors and the communities you serve.

Articulating Beliefs:

We highlight why business leaders need to be clear about their values and beliefs and articulate clear narratives that resonate with people's values. We provide insight on Milton Friedman's Neoliberalism and how it promotes shareholder value above anything else, which is no longer relevant and is to the detriment of society. We explore whether stakeholder capitalism is the way forward in today's changed creator economy.

Purposeful Leadership:

Leaders need to focus on the future and create something new by exhibiting purposeful leadership. We discuss why people with the seed of leadership should be excited about the opportunity to create something new.

It was an absolute pleasure to have John on the show. We're grateful he made the time to come sit down with us. This one is packed with wisdom and practical tools regarding trust, motivation, purposeful leadership, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange!

As always, you can find the podcast on Apple, Acast, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.

Remember, by creating clear visions and articulating beliefs, leaders can inspire change and create a better future for everyone.

In this episode, we speak to Jack Potter, the Biodiversity and Nutrient Neutrality Manager at Ground Control. Since launching in 1973, Ground Control has been focused on creating better landscapes, nurturing natural environments, and constructing spaces that bring people, places, and the planet together. With a vision to leave the world in a better place than we found it, Ground Control is committed to enhancing and improving the physical environment for all.

In this episode, we delve into the following topics:

1. The Global Biodiversity Crisis and the Realities of the Crisis in the U.K:

  • The UK is at the very edge of environmental collapse, with only 50% of the UK's biodiversity remaining.
  • The UK is ranked in the bottom ten percent of all countries globally, driven largely by government policy and incentives over the last century.
  • However, with a shift in public perception, politicians are also starting to take notice.
  • As a result, the UK government has created the Environmental Act and is pushing for biodiversity net gain in the UK, an approach to development that leaves biodiversity in a better state than before.

2. The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD):

  • The TNFD has been created to develop and deliver a risk management and disclosure framework for organizations to report and act on evolving nature-related risks.
  • The ultimate aim is to support a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive outcomes.

3. The 2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference:

  • We discuss the significance of these conferences and the impact and challenges on biodiversity conservation efforts and sustainable development.

4. Biodiversity as an Industry:

  • Biodiversity as an industry is in its infancy, especially in the UK.
  • Measurement is difficult to assess with no universal measurement of impact and net gain.

5. Big Businesses Davos, and COP:

  • We discuss the challenges that big businesses face in living up to the big promises they made at COP and Davos and the importance of them stepping up to the challenge.

6. Biodiversity Credits:

  • Similar to carbon credits, biodiversity credits can help businesses meet their biodiversity objectives, particularly when many of them don't own green spaces.

7. Government and Biodiversity Management:

  • We discuss the need for governments to do more, particularly in terms of funding and support for local governments who are often ill-equipped to handle the full-scale recovery needed in the UK
  • We also emphasise the realities of the cost of living crisis and the importance of businesses getting involved and supporting biodiversity conservation efforts.

Chatting with Jack was an absolute pleasure, and our hope is that this episode inspires you into your own form of action - because we can't change the world without changing ourselves.

With the cost of living soaring and a global recession afoot, people and businesses are already facing the consequences of cascading global crises. Crises which amounts to a perfect storm of falling incomes, rising prices, public service cuts, rising inequalities, lack of investment and more. Research has also shown employer investment in areas such as training has fallen sharply since 2005 risking nations such as the UK ‘sleepwalking into skills stagnation’.

While the war for talent has long been an issue (particularly in the tech sector) and the perils and pitfalls of short-term thinking long known - the unique challenges of today presents new existential risks for people and businesses within this changed global economy.

Today's guest, Michael Houlihan, CEO of Generation is working to fix some of the existential problems we witness whilst creating new pathways between education & employment.

Generation partners with companies to provide free, effective and intensive training programmes that transform education-to-employment systems, helping to prepare, place, and support people into meaningful, well-paid jobs that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Generation has partnered with The BlackRock Foundation, McKinsey & Company, Microsoft, Verizon and more to successfully tackle global unemployment, placing thousands of people into jobs that have generated more than $140 million in salary income to date. Working in over 16 countries, Generation has also been collaborating with Government and businesses to pinpoint where there are skills gaps, helping to train and reskill people who might have lost their jobs, were unable to access higher education, or who want to explore an entirely new career path.

During today's conversation we explore the importance of future conscious thinking and behaviours, why remote working and flexibility is key to economic growth, how older workers are assets, not liabilities coupled to a new pathway to a new generation and more.

I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Michael and we hope you do too.

Enjoy!

Looking at the challenges we face, as one of the richest nations in the world, and a government who have spent billions, how are we in this position whereby so many people are choosing between heating and eating?

This was the central question that initiated today’s episode as Craig Taylor (Gratitude), Juliet Davenport (Founder, Good Energy), Katy Chakrabortty (Oxfam), Morris Pearl (Patriotic Millionaires), Ryan Curtis-Johnson (The Valuable 500) and I (Purpose Made) explore:

1). The Challenges of the Cost-of-Living Crisis and Austerity

2). Thoughts on the Autumn Budget and

3). Solutions at hand driven by the discussion held

A central take home from today’s episode is we need to cultivate future-conscious thinking and behaviour, to build more hopeful visions of the future, and turn those visions into action, specifically:

  • Transforming mindsets from reactionary short-termism to the long-term

  • Widening our scope beyond today to tomorrow &

  • Focus on the long path beyond the shortcut.

I really enjoyed this one and I hope you do too.

My hope is that the words spoken offer you a sense of perspective, that is honest and hopeful. But more than anything, my hope is that today’s episode will inspire you to act with us. As when you see what is possible, change is inevitable.

Sir David Attenborough once said, “An understanding of the natural world is a source of not only great curiosity but great fulfilment.”

And so, surely it is our responsibility to do everything within our power to create, nurture and maintain a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth?

So why, here in the UK, is a deluge of untreated sewage being dumped by water companies into our rivers and along our coastlines?

Last year alone, there were a whopping 372,533 sewage spills, over a period of 2.7 million hours.

This is one of the BIGGEST environmental scandals of our time. Yet, as is always the case, it doesn't have to be this way.

This is why today we are joining forces with Hugo Tagholm to bring to you a deep dive into the world of marine conservation and critique the scandals we're witnessing on our shorelines.

Hugo served as Chief Exec of Surfers Against Sewage, one of the UK’s leading marine conservation and campaigning charities that have been instrumental in campaigning for the introduction and enforcement of legislation that protects our seas from pollution.

He also led partnerships at The Climate Coalition, and joined forces with Richard Haward’s Oysters and the Good Law Project, with the aim of compelling the Government to rewrite its Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan to impose much tighter deadlines on water companies to clean up their act.

Tagholm has also served as Programme Director at Theirworld and is an esteemed TEDx speaker, columnist for Oceanographic Magazine, and avid surfer.

Earlier this year, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science for his services to marine conservation by the University of Exeter and has recently become the Exec Director and Vice President at Oceana, the largest international advocacy organisation dedicated solely to ocean conservation.

The crux of this wonderful conversation focuses on the majesty of our oceans, the tragedy of their decline and the urgency of change.

Chatting with Hugo was an absolute pleasure and my hope is that this one inspires you into your own form of action and activism —because we can't change the world without changing ourselves.

As always, the podcast is available on Apple, Acast, Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts.

In his book, The End of Poverty, Jeffrey Sachs made some careful estimates as to what it would cost to end extreme poverty in the world in about 20 years. Sachs calculated that the total cost per year would be about $175 billion. This represented less than one percent of the combined income of the richest countries in the world. In fact, this cost is 0.7% of the total income of the 30 countries who comprised OECD in 2005.

Fast forward to 2022, an estimated 698 million people, or 9% of the global population, are living in extreme poverty, with the overwhelming majority living on less than $1.90 a day. By 2030, 167 million children will live in extreme poverty if the world doesn’t act.

This is where my guest today comes in.

Esnatt Gondwe-Matekesa is a Development Practitioner at GiveDirectly. GiveDirectly is a non-profit that lets donors, like you, send money directly to the world’s poorest households.

Since 2009, they've delivered $580M+ in cash directly into the hands of over 1.37 million people living in poverty and currently have operations in DRC, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, USA, & Yemen.

During today's conversation we explore the work of GiveDirectly, Foreign aid, tax, governance and what the future holds.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Esnatt - please enjoy what I think you will find to be a truly fascinating, potentially life-altering conversation.

Dan Stanley is a retired award-winning senior Army commando, a key decision maker in a multi-million-pound service business and a former national sporting champion in indoor rowing. Dan is a frequent contributor to national publications such as Men's Fitness and Muscle and Health magazine, public speaker and is also an expert in human development and performance.

Yet despite his outward successes, he experienced a ‘midlife crisis’ shortly after becoming a father which very nearly cost him his marriage. He found he had many questions that he couldn’t answer. He was forced to learn who he truly was, where his life was going and to accept his failings. Ultimately, success is an inside job.

And so, he embarked on a journey of introspection, personal growth, and deliberate action to become the BetterMan you see today whilst helping others to do the same.

During this episode we talk about:

  • His journey from turbulence to transformation.
  • Twenty-first Century Masculinity, the Old Blueprint and the five key challenges affecting modern day men: workaholism, loneliness, poor mental health, midlife crisis, and divorce.
  • His time in the Army and a History of Modern-day Masculinity
  • Self-leadership and more.

Rethinking Masculinityis for anyone who has experienced a setback, finds themselves stagnant or is silently enduring the second half of life. It’s a guide for anyone who is questioning ‘is this it?’ and the understanding that your life does not get better by chance; it gets better by change ~ Jim Rohn

During this episode you will discover the BetterMen blueprint for success and learn how to live a life you’re proud of not one of regret.

Remember there's no future in the past, and this is a staunch reminder that we all possess the inherent power to course correct the trajectory of our lives, no matter how dire the circumstances.

Pain + Reflection = Progress ~ Ray Dalio

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Dan —please enjoy what I think you will find to be a truly fascinating, potentially life-altering conversation.

Somewhere along the way you're likely to have heard the stat that one in every seven of us are living with a disability, making up the worlds biggest minority group. So why are disabled people twice as likely to be unemployed, underrepresented, excluded and still facing widespread discrimination?

Today I explore this terrain with the wonderful Joanne Pritchard, CEO of the Valuable 500.

The Valuable 500 is on a mission to use the power of business to drive lasting change for the 1.3 billion people around the world, living with a disability.

Supported by strategic partners, the Valuable 500 collaborates and connects together with companies such as: Allianz, Apple, BBC, Deloitte, EY, Google, LSEG, Mahindra, Microsoft, Omnicom, P&G, Salesforce, Sky, Sony, Verizon and others to drive change and strive to be inclusive by design.

As when we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. It's all about actions, not just words.

And so, in order to join the Valuable 500, the CEO or leader of each of their companies have each made a personal commitment to action for disability inclusion.

This is what makes Valuable amazing – as they encourage companies to take tangible action.

Even the simplest action, has impact at scale, and as you'll soon discover, there is no limit to what can be achieved.

I really enjoyed talking with Joanna, her wisdom on this important subject is profound and I think this one just might leave you reevaluating your path and priorities in a positive way going forward. As when you see what is possible, change is inevitable ✌🏻🌿

Enjoy!

People & Planet.

In today’s episode, we chat with the awesome Ben Greensmith aka Lord Chocolonely the Third, the UK and Ireland Country Manager for Tony’s Chocolonely. Tony's Chocolonely dates back to 2003 when Dutch journalist Teun van de Keuken learned of widespread modern slavery and illegal child labour across cocoa farms in West Africa. What makes Van de Keuken's findings even more remarkable was that some of the world's leading chocolate manufacturers had signed the Harkin-Engel Protocol agreeing to the eradication of slavery and child labour from their supply chains just two years prior.Where the voluntary protocol failed, Tony decided to do something about it. Demanding that a local judge convict him of supporting child slavery because, by paying for chocolate, he was supporting the exploitation of minors. When the case was dismissed, he tried to change the industry from within to show there's a way to be a successful chocolate manufacturer that doesn't involve the exploitation of West African communities and that's exactly what they’ve been doing ever since. From Tony's humble ‘lonely’ beginnings, Tony's Chocolonely has grown into a global brand, available in all 50 states of the US, the UK, and across Europe, as well as becoming the largest chocolate manufacturer in the Netherlands. With revenue in excess of €100 million, Tony’s shows no signs of slowing up, with the recent acquisition of Belgium chocolate manufacturer Althaea-De Laet international to the construction of a new factory and visitors centre north of Amsterdam. All indicate a period of exciting growth to come for a firm crazy about chocolate and serious about people.During this fantastic episode, we focus on:* A background to Ben, Tony's amazing journey and why they do the work they do today. * Cocoa as the heart of many economies in West Africa, especially in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana where more than two million farmers produce nearly 70 percent of the world's cocoa. * The Harkin-Engel Protocol * The challenges of the chocolate industry having a child labour rate of 46.5% and how by proactively looking for child labour means you can look to fix the root cause of the problem i.e., poverty at the earliest point of the cocoa supply chain is the key driver of child labour. * Farmgate Price & Tonys Premium * Partnerships, Tony's FAIR, The Chocolonely Foundation and Bitter Chocolate Stories together with * Key thoughts and takeaways.

Nick Jonsson is the co-founder and managing director of the Singapore branch of EGN (Executives’ Global Network) and dedicated to raising awareness and eliminating the stigma around the phenomenon of executive loneliness.

He has identified that feelings of isolation and depression—personal struggles that he, himself, has had to grapple with and conquer—are much more widespread than we think.

Work cultures often encourage executives to project success and achievement when, in fact, thousands actually suffer in silence and denial of their unspoken isolation. Often dismissed and rarely discussed, Nick brings to the forefront an open, honest and engrossing conversation about:

✅ His own story of resilience and courage
✅ The challenges within an epidemic of isolation
✅ Smiling depression
✅ The five steps to emerging stronger from a place of despair.

This is very much a story of turning pain into purpose. It’s lonely at the top — but it doesn’t have to be.

Guy Schanschieff MBE, went from being an accountant in training at KPMG to travelling the world with his wife Jo, where a chance meeting in India, would result in the pair returning to the UK in the early 90s, to co-found the multi-million pound business Bambino Mio we see today. But Bambino Mio’s journey is much more than the luck of a chance meeting, it is a story of courage and of determination and a mission to make sure that every parent and child have access to stylish and affordable reusable baby products, within global markets demanding meaning above margin. It’s also the story of how activating a brands purpose, can inspire conscious consumer driven movements which lead to transformation and growth for companies both inside and out.

By activating their brand purpose, Bambino Mio haven’t just witnessed rapid growth, they’ve also won the Queens award for International Trade, an MBE for Guy and ‘Best in Brand Purpose’ at the recent Drum Awards.

Chatting to Guy was awesome, and what is true from our conversation, is the future of business and brand hinges upon understanding purpose as something far greater than a do gooder exercise. Activating brand purpose is much more meaningful to what a company stands for and believes in, and it’s up to leaders, to activate their brand purpose into narratives that inspire consumer driven movements like Bambino Mio. So without further ado, please sit back, relax and we do hope you enjoy!!

Morris Pearl exudes expertise, awareness and wisdom. Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and previously an MD at BlackRock (one of the largest investment firms in the world), today he shares with me, to share with you, our listeners, the amazing facts that have led to record levels of global inequality, the root cause to social unrest.

Within this episode, Morris and I discussed the origins of the Patriotic Millionaires and their newest book Tax the Rich: How Lies, Loopholes, and Lobbyists Make the Rich Even Richer, whilst he also provides a rare insider’s view of how the rich and powerful have rigged an economy and political system in their favour whilst everyone else are left to foot the bill. History has shown us time and time again what happens when money and power is concentrated within the hands of too few for too long. And by allowing millionaires, billionaires, and corporations to control the economy and rig it in their favour, we know doesn't turn out well for anyone, including the rich.

This is an amazing conversation you’re not going to want to miss!! So without further ado, please sit back, relax and we do hope you enjoy. For more information on items referenced during today’s podcast, please feel free to check out the links in the description below.

In today’s episode we chat to the wonderful Kathryn Hymes. Kathryn is a computational linguist, co-founder of Thorny Games, and a writer whose work on language, technology, and music has appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times and more recently Wired.

On November 1st 2021, Kathryn wrote an article entitled, the ‘Great Resignation’ Misses the Point, as around the world, people are quitting their jobs in record numbers and bosses are scrambling to figure out why. The phrase itself, originated in early May, at a time in which Professor Anthony Klotz, warned that “The Great Resignation is coming” as part of an interview held with Bloomberg.

A few weeks later, the Bureau for Labour Statistics confirmed, a record 4 million Americans had left their jobs in April. The trend proved to be a global one, as within the UK, job vacancies grew to an all-time high in July and September, with available posts surpassing 1.1 million. Suddenly, people were reaching for ways to refer to this new phenomenon unfolding before them—to brand it and to make sense of it.

Within this episode, Kathryn and I discussed the origins of her article, and how it forms part of a much wider transformation taking place within the global society today. We also discuss, how by embracing an era of narrative, we can derive more meaning by focusing on the root causes rather than a simple slogan.

This is a truly wonderful conversation that you’re not going to want to miss!! So without further ado, please sit back, relax and we do hope you enjoy.

In today’s podcast, we speak to the amazing Professor John Ashton CBE, one of the world’s leading experts in the field of public health and author of the book, ‘Blinded by Corona.’ Professor Ashton is a British doctor and academic who has held positions at the University of Southampton, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the University of Liverpool School of Medicine and also as Regional Director of Public Health for North-West England for 13 years.

On February 1st 2020, Professor Ashton was one of the first voices to sound the alarm of a global pandemic via an interview held with British broadcaster, Sky News. During the interview, he mapped out the need for urgent and swift action, at a time the UK were witnessing 83 British nationals return from Wuhan, landing at RAF base Brize Norton, and the countries first confirmed cases of coronavirus we being identified in York. It proved to be a decisive moment, as Professor Ashton was asked by the Crown Prince of Bahrain, to join Bahrain’s COVID-19 Task Force and provide hands on training and knowledge to the countries coronavirus response. Bahrain alongside Taiwan, South Korea, New Zealand and Singapore would go on to be one of the few countries who provided a beacon of hope, in respect to their handling of the coronavirus pandemic so far.

How well a population can migrate beyond a pandemic, will depend on preparation, resilience, openness, transparency, trust, leadership, communication, cooperation and crucially the mobilisation of the public to act with evidence and science. Chatting to Professor Ashton was an absolute pleasure, this is an amazing episode and one not to be missed. So without further ado, please sit back, relax and we do hope you enjoy.

Sarah, is a proud mum, a multi award winning entrepreneur, financier and mentor. She is also the winner of the prestigious Daily Mail and NatWest Everywoman Female Entrepreneur of the year award in 2015.

Yet like every great success story, we find a journey built on courage and in 2008 Sarah was bankrupt, a single mum, on income support, plagued by anxiety and panic attacks with a bank threatening to repossess her home.

From these inauspicious beginnings, she's transformed her life. Founded the hugely successful business Simply Bows & Chair Covers, secured her home, became financially free and in a final touch worthy of Hollywood remarried her husband and did so whilst twice battling cancer and also helping to nurse her dying mother-in-law.

To call Sarah extraordinary is an understatement and we do hope that her journey is one which will inspire you and provide you hope and also provide you solace that by working hard and believing in yourself, anything is possible!!!

In this episode we chat to the amazing Jamie Sadler, managing director of Food Nation, Harissa Kitchen and founder of the phenomenal Men’s Pie Club. This is a Purpose Made special for World Suicide Prevention Day.

Every year, organisations and communities, come together on Sept 10th to raise awareness of how we can create a world whereby fewer people die by suicide. As it is estimated that 800,000 people across the world die from suicide each year. For every death there are many more people who have planned or attempted to take their own lives. According to the World Health Organisation, it’s estimated that one person every 40 seconds dies from suicide, each with their own personal and heart-breaking story.

Each and every suicide is a tragedy, causing devastating and permanent impacts on families, friends and broader communities. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we do more to support those in need, invest in care and provisions, openly talk about the issue in hope of reducing these tragic losses.

Suicide is a serious global health problem, and is preventable with timely, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions. One of those such interventions, is that of the Newcastle based Men’s Pie Club. A club formed as a response to the increasing need for social connections, particularly for men who are at greater risk of becoming socially isolated.

Pie Club is a welcoming place where you can come to get stuff off your chest and put something in your belly and chatting to Jamie was an absolute pleasure and we really hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.

In this episode we chat to David Smith and Alex Laing from Oasis Community Housing. Oasis is a charity that exists to reignite a hope and provide a future for everyone facing homelessness and like ourselves they believe that anyone’s life can be transformed for the better. That’s why, every year, Oasis offer hope and futures to people facing homelessness.

David is the Chief Executive of Oasis whilst Alex is the Project Team Lead for Resettlement. We wanted to speak to Oasis specifically around the fantastic work they are doing within the community and also about the wider impacts the Covid pandemic has had on homelessness and on the charitable sector as a whole.

It was reported in June 2020, by the Guardian and as part of a Pro Bono Economic study conducted that 1 in 10 UK charities were facing bankruptcy as they struggle to cope with a £10bn shortfall caused by soaring demand for their services and lost fundraising income due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Additionally, homelessness is a notoriously difficult thing to quantify. As elements such as sofa surfing, means people often don’t consider themselves to be homeless. Furthermore, there is no national figure for how many people are homeless across the UK. Crazy isn’t it. But that's because homelessness is recorded differently in each of our nations, and because of this, many homeless don’t even show up in official statistics.

What we do know is for the last 5 years’ core homelessness has been rising year on year in England, reaching 219,000 before the pandemic with current estimates believed to be in the region of 280,000.

Homelessness isn’t inevitable. Finland for example are showing the rest of Europe homelessness can decline. But homelessness must be beyond buildings. It’s about people and nurturing supportive relationships that offer hope and futures and not simply a temporary “Everyone in” accommodation .

Chatting to David and Alex was an absolute pleasure and we really hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.

Thank you.

In this episode we chat to the incredible Juliet Davenport OBE, and creator of Good Energy – the UK’s first 100% renewable energy company.

Juliet founded Good Energy in 1999, for the purpose of creating a way for people and businesses to be part of the solution to climate change. Having grown up in a high carbon world (her father is the legendary rallying co-driver John Davenport), Juliet spent most of her time as a child either on the side of a race track or watching fast cars in a forest. Juliet went on to study physics at Oxford, before focusing on atmospheric physics and namely the physics of climate change.  So whilst the journey of Good Energy may have originated in Oxford, today Good Energy supplies renewable energy to more than 73k households & businesses in the UK, dedications which earned her an OBE in 2013 for services to renewables.
