The latest Purple Stuff Podcast is here, and this one could only be served in the cold, black heart of the Halloween season. (Well, I guess we could’ve released it in April or May, but it sure wouldn’t hit the same.)

Join us as we march through the October 1987 network television premiere of FRIGHT NIGHT, as aired on a Fox affiliate in Wisconsin, complete with cheesy bumpers and oh-so-’80s TV commercials.

This ran just a few days before Halloween that year, and what a perfect flick for the season. Jay came at this with the perspective of a longtime fan, but I’m a shameful Fright Night newbie… and I fell in love with this wonderful movie. Chris Sarandon as a shark-toothed vampire who’s obsessed with Marcy D’Arcy? God, yes!

We’re gonna walk you through our favorite moments, talk about Fright Night trivia, and even dip into some of those vintage TV commercials. It’s almost as good as watching the whole broadcast in 1987!

Click here to listen to this month’s show!

…which you can also find on Spotify, or Apple, or wherever else you listen to podcasts.

As a reminder, The Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can get access to our huge catalog of monthly bonus episodes. October’s is coming up soon, and it’s very Halloweeny! Thanks to all who support us over there!

PS: While we can’t show you the movie, we did put together this montage including the intro, bumpers, and some of the glorious TV commercials. (H/T to SpookySkunk for this!)

Thanks so much for listening, and for sharing the show around! We hope this episode adds a little something to your Halloween season. Pair it with apple cider and a pumpkin donut, and you’re set!

The wait is over! It’s time for one of The Purple Stuff Podcast’s most important annual traditions, where we give your Halloween playlists a boost with song suggestions that you probably never considered before. Yes indeed, it’s time for SPOOKY SONGS, VOLUME ELEVEN!

Me and Jay from Sludge Central have been at this for around a decade now, and it’s still one of our favorite shows to do. This deep into the series, it’s more challenging than ever to find killer songs that we haven’t already covered – so we had to turn over a lot of rocks to dig out the good stuff. I think we succeeded!

Join us as we celebrate another ten terrifying tracks that would be perfect for your Halloween playlist. Featured artists include Jon Mikl Thor, the Crypt Keeper, and The Chipmunks!

Click here to listen to this month’s show!

…which you can also find on Apple, Spotify, and wherever else you listen to podcasts.

As a reminder, The Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab an exclusive bonus episode, every month. (We just dropped the latest one, where we name some of the hottest Halloween food promotions coming our way this October.)

Thanks so much for listening, and for sharing the show around! This latest episode actually counts as September’s – we had to push it off, because I’ve been sick. But that means you’ve still got more Halloween action coming from The Purple Stuff Podcast this month, so stay tuned! Happy October!

The bold blues, the stench of popcorn, and the telltale hum of fluorescent lighting. Are you ready to take a trip back to you-know-where?

In the latest Purple Stuff Podcast, we’re using our time-bending powers to visit Blockbuster Video in 1994!

No, really, that’s what this episode is about. Join me and Jay from Sludge Central as we ride our bikes to VHS heaven, argue over what to rent, do some people-watching, and relive the entire experience of the Blockbuster Video chain from its mid ‘90s heyday.

While people like us obviously preferred the mom-and-pop video stores from earlier in our youth – and often criticize Blockbuster for doing them so dirty – the chain was still a huge part of our collective childhood, and we spent many, many, many nights stomping around its thin carpets, looking for our weekend entertainment. It was fun as hell to do it again!

…which is also on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts.

As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab exclusive bonus shows each and every month. We hope y’all dig our virtual trip to Blockbuster Video in 1994. Thanks so much for listening, and for sharing the show around! If you have any specific memories of the chain – even if they’re just about the giant gumball machines – feel free to share ‘em in the comments section.

For this month’s Purple Stuff Podcast, we’re visiting a mystical, magical bowling alley that’s trapped in the early ‘90s. You will never find a more wretched hive of fun and gluttony.

Those alleys were ground zero for some of our favorite childhood memories. These bizarre, cold caverns filled with fries, arcade games, weird shoes and neon lights. For a few hours, it was like traveling to another planet.

In this episode, me and Jay from Sludge Central revisit every nook and cranny of an early ‘90s bowling alley, right down to the shoe rack and the vending machines. Major nostalgia points, plus a whole lot of synth tracks. Join us!

Almost four years later, and we’re finally ready to drop the sequel to one of the most popular Purple Stuff Podcast episodes ever. Get set for another eight great sodas… it’s THE SODA SHOW: PART II!

Me and Jay from Sludge Central didn’t hear of water until we were in our twenties. We grew up on fizzy drinks, and we’re very excited to share another batch of our favorites with you, from the ‘80s, ‘90s and early 2000s.

There are some real deep cuts in the mix, from Life Savers Soda to Not Quite Crystal Pepsi!

Click here to listen to this month’s show!

…which you can also find on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts.

The Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab an additional bonus episode each and every month. When you join, you also get immediate access to our back catalog of over sixty bonus shows!

2) The Pepsi Wild Bunch!
3) The Original New York Seltzer!
4) Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash!
5) Crystal From The Makers of Pepsi!
6) Shasta’s Super Mario Sodas!
7) Storm, from Pepsi!
8) Clearly Canadian!

You’ll notice that a couple of those only barely qualify as sodas. It’s amazing what you can get away with without an oversight committee.

We hope you dig the new episode, and that it makes you really, really thirsty. Thanks as always for your time and ears, and for sharing the show around. Cheers!

We’re a few weeks late with this podcast, but what can you expect from an episode that’s 206 years in the making?

The latest Purple Stuff Podcast is all about FRANKENSTEIN. (Or more accurately Frankenstein’s Monster, if you’re the type who cares.)

The big man has provided so much entertainment over the years, in everything from movies to cartoons to toys to video games. For this special spooky episode, me and Jay from Sludge Central are naming eight great Frankensteins from all walks of pop culture, with some deep pulls that you definitely aren’t expecting. (Frankenstein: The College Years, anyone?)

Click here to listen to this month’s show!

…which you can also find on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts.

As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab exclusive bonus shows each and every month. Our latest is about vintage Beetlejuice collectibles, and April’s is still yet to come!

The latest Purple Stuff Podcast is here, and it’s a mean green mother from outer space.

Join me and Jay from Sludge Central as we dive into a 1990 television broadcast of Little Shop of Horrors, complete with the original commercials! It’s a celebration of everything from giant alien flytraps to Burger King!

A few years after its theatrical debut, Little Shop was the ABC Sunday Night Movie. September 9th, 1990, to be exact. It must’ve been a pretty big deal, because the volume and variety of advertisers was wild – everything from Happy Meals to horror movies. Naturally, we’ll be talking about a bunch of those TV spots during the show.

We’re also naming our favorite scenes from the movie, our favorite things about Little Shop of Horrors that exist outside of the movie, and we’ll even touch upon the film’s original ending, which was absolutely bananas in the best way.

We think you’re gonna dig this one. We had so much fun recording it, and just speaking personally, this sent me so far down the Little Shop rabbit hole that I feel like I could record another five episodes without a drop of prep.

Click here to listen to this month’s show!

…which is also available on Spotify, Apple, or wherever else you listen to podcasts!

As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where we post an exclusive bonus show every month. For our latest bonus, we’re pulling out even more ads from this 1990 broadcast, so if the main show isn’t enough for ya, go sign up and get another 25 minutes’ worth of goodies. (Plus over SIXTY other bonus shows!)

You can also enjoy this compilation of ads from the 1990 broadcast, which includes all of the commercials we talk about on the main and bonus shows. The ABC broadcast was used with permission from The Little Shop Archive, which is an absolutely great resource for fans of the film. If you’re into Audrey II, give them a follow!

Thanks so much for your time and ears, and for sharing the show around! (This is technically February’s episode, by the way. Which means that you won’t be waiting too long for more Purple Stuff!)

The latest Purple Stuff Podcast is here, and this episode is many years in the making. Get set for an hour-long tribute to ALL THINGS SLIME. Slap on a vinyl poncho and watch out for weird glowing puddles.

Yes, it’s THE SLIME SHOW. Our ooziest episode ever. Me and Jay from Sludge Central are big fans of the sticky stuff. That was actually the trickiest part of this episode, since we’ve already talked about so many slimy things on prior shows! (Sorry to anyone who was expecting Slimer Sundaes or Turtle Pies, but they’re already in our archives!)

Instead, this was a chance for us to fish out some super random things that wouldn’t fit on any other episode, from the Super Soaker Oozinator to Slime Slurps candy. It’s our first show for 2024, and I think we’re setting a good tone for the rest of the year!

Click here to listen to the new episode!

…which is also on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts.

As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where we post exclusive bonus shows each and every month. When you sign up, you also get immediate access to our entire back catalog, and there’s well over sixty bonus shows in there. A big bang for your buck!

Stop reading here if you’re avoiding spoilers, but if you’d like to know more about the eight icky sticky subjects we’re covering on The Slime Show, follow the links below!

1. RGB: Adventures in Slime & Space!
2. Gelooze Fruit… Drinks?
3. Oozers Action Figures!
4. Masters of the Universe Slime Pit!
5. Super Soaker Oozinator!
6. Slime City, from 1988!
7. Gooey Gus, from Ghostwriter!
8. Slime Slurps Candy!

Thanks so much for your continued support of the Purple Stuff Podcast! Hard to believe that we launched this baby way back in 2015. We’re looking forward to spending another year with you guys, and we appreciate your kind comments, shares and reviews. Enjoy the new episode!

The time has come! The most anticipated Purple Stuff episode of the year just dropped, and oh yes, it’s time for us to dive into another old Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! And boy, we picked a GOOD one…

Join me and Jay from Sludge Central for an hour-long celebration of the 1986 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which is definitely in the running for the best ever.

The three-hour broadcast is nonstop insanity from start to finish, and features everything from He-Man to Barbie to rogue clowns, and even Phyllis Diller driving a goose-shaped car.

This is a big one. Might be my favorite of all the parade episodes we’ve done!

Click here to listen to the new episode!

…which you can also find on Apple, or Spotify, or wherever else you listen to podcasts.

If you’ve never experienced this particular parade, you’re not gonna believe your ears. Even the “bad” stuff is amazing. Hell, even the commercial breaks are incredible – and yes, we’re covering a few of those, too!

Actually, on that note: In addition to the new episode, we also just dropped a surprise bonus show over on Patreon, where we’re covering another two commercials from the parade broadcast. Sign up now to hear that, and to get instant access to our enormous back catalog of bonus episodes!

I also put together this montage of clips from the parade featuring all of the performances (and commercials) that we’ll be discussing. This was made using BMan78’s complete upload of the parade, which you can view here and here. (Montage made with permission – thank you, BMan!)

We hope y’all enjoy the show. We always have a blast recording the parade eps, and this was no exception. If it puts you in the mood for more Macy’s action, feel free to dive back into our older parade reviews:

1988 | 1989 | 2001 | 1990 | 1994

Thanks so much for listening, and for sharing the show around! The holiday season is here, and we hope this helps you kick it off with a laugh or three.

The latest Purple Stuff Podcast is a special one, full of Halloween spirit, ’80s nostalgia and, uh, Donald Duck. Get set for Disney’s DTV Monster Hits!

Disney’s DTV Monster Hits was a prime time television special that aired on Friday, October 30th, 1987. “DTV” was a play on “MTV,” obviously, and the special consisted of clips from Disney’s spookiest shorts and movies, set against various pop songs.

The hour-long special is near and dear to Jay and I, so we were thrilled to make it the subject of our latest show. With a special assist to Walt’s Vault, we were able to dive into the COMPLETE 1987 broadcast, with the original commercials and everything!

Join us as we tackle some of Disney’s freakiest works, plus old school commercials covering everything from McDonald’s to dead sitcoms.

Click here to listen to this month’s show!

…which you can also find on Apple, Spotify and everywhere else you listen to podcasts.

If you don’t have time to watch the entire broadcast, I put together this mix of commercials that aired during the special. (Again, thanks to Walt’s Vault for letting us raid the goods!)

But wait, there’s more! If you subscribe to the Purple Stuff Podcast over on Patreon, we just dropped an extra bonus show, covering two more commercials that aired during DTV Monster Hits. (This is in addition to October’s “real” bonus show, which is yet to come!) Thanks for all of your support over there!

We had so much fun with this, and I hope it’s infectious. I’ve been doing the nostalgia schtick for decades, and at this point, it takes something special to really rock me. DTV Monster Hits did it. What a trip.

The wait is over! For the TENTH time, the Purple Stuff Podcast is comin’ at ya with a new batch of SPOOKY SONGS!

Yep, it’s Spooky Songs, Volume X! Another ten terrifying tracks that y’all NEED to add to your Halloween playlist. You’d think me and Jay from Sludge Central would be picking through the dregs by this point, but nah, this is one of our best assortments yet!

Broad as it is, “horror” is my favorite musical genre. I listen to this stuff all year, but of course, it hits hardest during the Halloween season. Possibly excluding pumpkin-scented candles, macabre music is the easiest way to bring a little Halloween into your daily doings. So crank it up, y’all.

Click here to listen to this month’s show!

…which you can also find on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts.

As a reminder, The Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can get an exclusive bonus show every month. Join now and you’ll also get access to all prior bonus shows, and boy, there are a LOT of them. Sixty by my count, and September’s is still yet to drop!

I don’t want to spoil our picks for Spooky Songs Volume X, but suffice it to say, it’s loaded with bangers. Horror movie tracks, pop songs – there’s a little bit of everything in there.

We always have a blast doing these episodes, and we hope that comes through when you listen. Thanks for your time & ears, and for sharing the show around. Enjoy!

PS: If this is your first visit to the site in a while, you’ve missed a lot! I have two ongoing features that are being updated daily, so once you’re done here, go check out Dino Drac’s Daily Halloween Thing, and the Spooky Foods Graveyard!

Yep, from Superman’s Kryptonite Rocks to Dream Glow Barbie, me and Jay from Sludge Central are ready to name eight great things that are wildly, impossibly different, except for the fact that they all glow in the dark!

Well, we’re a day late delivering the latest Purple Stuff Podcast, but honestly? I blame February. It’s not our fault that dumb month only has 28 days. Months are supposed to be 30 or 31 days – that’s the rule!

In any event, we’re finally here, and we’re ready to continue our long series of color-themed shows. In the past we’ve done episodes about red things, green things and blue things, but now it’s time to THINK PINK!

It’s finally here! We know there was an extra long wait for the latest episode of the Purple Stuff Podcast, but when you find out what we’re covering, I think you’ll forgive us.

That’s right! Time for another VHS dive! Join me and Jay from Sludge Central as we watch a network television broadcast of Jaws 3!

This one aired in July of ‘93, approximately ten years after the film debuted in theaters. Of course, the original 3D effects just became goofy shots on regular TV, but that was part of the charm!

I’ve always been a fan of this cheesy movie, and we’ll give you many reasons why on the show. We’ll also tell you about some of the commercials that aired during the original WPIX broadcast, which covered everything from Jurassic Park to Pizza Hut’s Bigfoot Pizza!

Click here to listen to this month’s show!

…which you can also find on Apple, Spotify or wherever else you listen to podcasts.

Both Jay and I grew up watching WPIX, and chances are good that we watched this very broadcast back in ‘93. Doing a show like this is an absolute full-circle moment for the both of us. We hope you enjoy it!

As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab an exclusive bonus show — and sometimes two — each and every month. (Oh, and if you like these VHS dives, one of our most recent bonus shows was about a 1991 TV broadcast of Tales from the Darkside.) Thanks for all of your support over there!

PS: We put together a compilation of commercials that aired during this ‘93 broadcast of Jaws 3 – which naturally includes all of the ones we’re covering on the show. Total nostalgia bomb!

Thanks again for listening, and for your reviews, and for sharing the show around! We’re now many years deep into doing this podcast, and your continued support means the world to us. Hope y’all dig the new episode – it’s a real cozy one for a freezing cold weekend!

Memorial Day is a baaaad time to post, but it was either that or miss our self-imposed deadline, so… hope you can take time out from barbecuing to listen to a podcast?

Me and Jay from Sludge Central made ourselves very hungry while recording this. You’ll probably suffer the same fate, so before you listen, make sure you’ve got a Snickers in your pocket or something.

On a personal note, I apologize for being incredibly not-present over these last few months. It’s been a difficult time. May is likely to be more of the same, but I hope to be back at full capacity by June. (Don’t worry, regular responsibilities like the Funpacks and the podcast will be unaffected.) I appreciate your patience and understanding!
