Overland Journal Podcast host Scott Brady interviews Jeremy “Thor” Bergh of Alu-Cab about building his South African export-driven business and supporting over 600 employees. Bergh shares a deeply personal account of his health journey, beginning with a seizure diagnosis and a brain tumor (glioma) near critical brain regions. He details the immense challenges of managing seizures, vision loss, and stress through surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Bergh credits stabilizing his condition to lifestyle adjustments—including swimming, meditation, and diet—alongside medical treatment. Reflecting on his experience, he discusses the importance of being present, appreciating the beauty of Cape Town, and focusing on family, teaching, and storytelling.

Few places on the planet resonate with the adventurer like the African continent, from the vibrant cultures to the ancient civilizations, megafauna, and some of the most remote and inspiring landscapes on earth. At Overland Journal, we have been fortunate to circumnavigate the planet three times and cross all seven continents. Still, we had one journey that has continually called to us- crossing the long axis of the African continent.

Today marks day zero of the journey, as our Ineos Grenadier arrives in Durban, and we begin lightly modifying the vehicle to meet our needs as travelers. We selected the Grenadier because of its "Built on Purpose" design, robust construction, off-highway capabilities, and wagon configuration (Editor's Note: We are not being paid to use the Grenadier). As we often share, pinnacle overland vehicles like the Grenadier require few changes for overlanding, and the Grenadier is no exception. We have no modifications planned for the vehicle, but we will add some storage and systems that help support the adventure.

Taking Delivery of the Grenadier

We took delivery of the Grenadier in London and spent a week exploring the countryside and testing the vehicle at the Millbrook proving grounds in Bedfordshire. In London, I worked with the Ineos team on securing RORO shipping, spares, support equipment, and the Carnet de Passage for importation.

Our preparations have begun in Johannesburg, working with longtime friends and partners to help source the needed kit and discussing the route plans with experienced Trans-Africa overlanders. After a few weeks in Joburg, we will conduct a test run through Lesotho and the surrounding bushveld before heading to Cape Town and our launching-off point.

Planned Grenadier Fieldmaster Modifications and Support Equipment:

  1. Secure vehicle storage, including a drawer system
  2. Inside sleeping platform that retains the rear seats
  3. Garmin GPS navigation and satellite communication
  4. Recovery gear, tools, and spares
  5. First aid and emergency supplies
  6. Melvill and Moon canvas seat covers and bed rolls
  7. Redarc battery management with auxiliary lithium battery
  8. Additional 80 liters of auxiliary fuel in Giant Loop bladders and NATO cans
  9. That is it. . .

Our Trans-Africa Overland Route Plan

The original plan was to drive along the classic eastern track from Cape Town to Cairo. With Sudan's closed border, we are looking at all possibilities, including driving north to Kenya and crossing through Rwanda to the DRC and up the west coast. Adjustments are all part of the adventure, and I am being in the moment and taking the journey country by country.
To help document the journey, I will have Joe Fleming along for most (if not all) of the trip. Joe is an inspiring visual storyteller, an experienced traveler, and a good friend. Others are planning to join for short sections too, and we will share our experiences on the pages of Overland Journal, in articles for expeditionportal.com, on our YouTube channel, and on The Overland Journal Podcast.

I am so grateful for the support of my family and the Overland International team in undertaking this trip, along with the generous help from Aether Apparel, Front Runner, Garmin, Ineos Automotive, Redarc, and others. We look forward to meeting some of you along the Overland Journal trans-Africa continental crossing journey and celebrating what will become a historic first (more on that soon).

Yours in adventure,

Scott Brady

Matt Scott shares details and insights about selecting the best Gladiator model to purchase and how to modify it for backcountry travel, including suspension, tires and wheels, bumpers, and overland campers.

What Makes the Jeep Gladiator So Special?
1. Jeep Capability
2. Proper payload, easily greater than most of its competitors.
3. Easily modified for a wide range of conditions.
4. Solid front and rear axles with available locking differentials.
5. Available manual transmission
6. Available diesel motor (late 2020)

What is the best model Gladiator for overland travel?
Matt- The Rubicon because of the locking differentials and other accessories like swaybar disconnect, etc.
Scott- The Sport with the Max Tow Package.

Some Inspiration:The XOverland Odin, built by Clay Croft and his team
Jeep Gladiator Wayout

Suspension?
Matt had the factory Mopar 2-inch suspension lift installed, which he has been happy with, save the rear Fox shocks. The spring rate is appropriate for Matt's load, but the rear shocks were valved for an unloaded truck. As a result, the blow through the available travel (rebound was also lacking).

Scott and Matt discuss other suspension options, and Matt is most anticipating the AEV kit due to proper spring rates and history of good valving. However, that kit is not currently available. Old Man Emu was also discussed as a good option, but it is also not available. The only kit currently on the market that meets Matt's expectations is the Icon Vehicle Dynamics kit.

Tires and Wheels?
Matt chose the Method Racing wheels in bronze, and selected the Falken A/T3W in 37" diameter.

Winch?
Warn Zeon 10-S

Camping Accessories?
AT Overland Habitat (The camper that Matt chose)
The FiftyTen Camper
Patriot Campers PCOR System

Smitten with life, UK adventuress Lois Pryce has always been on the move. At 13 years of age, an unchaperoned, week-long trip on bicycles through Cornwall’s back roads with friends introduced her to the possibilities of travel by design. And also to the idea of minimalist travel, taking shelter where you can find it, and bringing little more than bare essentials.

The complete article is available here: https://expeditionportal.com/top-10-used-overland-vehicles/

The used overland vehicle market is more exciting today than ever before, with high quality and capable options available from nearly every major automotive manufacturer. With so many models to choose from, you might be wondering which four-wheel drives make for the best second-hand overland vehicles? In 2011, we published our first US and Canada top ten used overland vehicle list, and it has been since been read over one million times. A lot has changed in the last eight years though, including the types of vehicles available under our original test’s $30,000 and 20-years or newer cap. We have also learned a few more things about overlanding vehicles since 2011 thanks to several circumnavigations of the globe. This has all resulted in a nearly new list for 2019, packed with excellent options for those looking to purchase their first overland vehicle or upgrade their current one. Regardless of this list and our opinions, the reality is that a traveler should drive what they can afford, and what they most enjoy driving, despite the make or model.

What makes a great used overland vehicle?

Typically, someone buying a used vehicle is looking for value, but they are also looking for something reliable and capable for travel too. At Expedition Portal, we feel the following criteria comprises the most critical attributes of an overland platform. Ride comfort, noise, vibration, harshness, and other less essential considerations are weighed in the final ranking, but the primary ordering is based on these qualities and our field testing results:

Capability: The vehicle’s ability to traverse rocky, muddy, and cross-axle terrain, including deep water crossings, severe side slopes, hill climbs, and descents.
Capacity: The vehicle’s ability to carry weight as measured by payload specifications and the interior storage volume aft of the front seats.
Durability: The vehicle’s ability to travel for extended periods of time (years) over rugged terrain while fully loaded without chassis or drivetrain failure.
Reliability: The vehicle’s ability to perform without engine, electrical, or support system failures due to component malfunction or workmanship error.
Value: Valuation of vehicle cost to content. Vehicles with high functional content will score the highest value ratings.
