Amy June Bates and her middle school daughter, Juniper Bates, have created something very special in their picture book The Big Umbrella. Kirkus Reviews wrote that it is a subtle, deceptively simple book about inclusion, hospitality, and welcoming the ‘other. Booklist calls it open-ended and a natural springboard for discussion. And for me this book is my new life mantra.

Episode summary:
The idea for The Big Umbrella came the day after the 2016 election. They knew they had a book idea right away and quickly (for an adult) had a story and dummy out to an art director.
Once they understood what the tone of the book, the story decisions fell into place.
They wanted this book to be inclusive in every way possible, including both sides of the political spectrum.
This book is more universal than political. It speaks to a deeper truth about the world we live in and how we can shape it into something better.
Amy’s illustrations were designed to allow us to see ourselves in these characters. But there is one character in the book that has both Amy and Juniper’s heart.
The images in this picture book showing all the diversity under one umbrella are powerful. They are all united and are all different at the same time.
Juniper tells us what she has learned from the process and Amy give us illustrators some great advice to help improve our work.

Catia and I chat about how she paints with light and texture, the importance of wide open days, life as a young immigrant, dancing with the lights off and so much more!
David Ezra Stein is the author-illustrator of ICE BOY. His previous book include LEAVES, winner of an Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award and INTERRUPTING CHICKEN, a Caldecott Honor Book.
Today’s featured picture book is about the atomic bomb. What I find fascinating about this book is the words you will not read. Atomic Bomb, Manhattan Project, WWII, Japan and Germany never appear. Tom Booth is the character designer and illustrator behind WHO WINS?: 100 HISTORICAL FIGURES GO HEAD-TO-HEAD. I’ve learned more about history from playing with this interactive book than I thought was possible.
Mike Lowery is known for his ability to talk like a pirate. So he was the perfect guest to have on during TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY. Mike also wrote and illustrated THE PURSUIT OF THE PESKY PIZZA PIRATE.
Rafael López is the illustrator and inspiration for the picture book MAYBE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL: HOW ART TRANSFORMED A NEIGHBORHOOD. There is so much to love about Rafael’s true story, and the picture book that captured the spirit of this neighborhood art project.
Alexis Braud is the author and illustrator of PARADE. This is a book that celebrates the Louisiana culture of parading but what drew me into it was the notion of starting. Just getting yourself out there and starting something without much fanfare. Putting yourself on display and parading ... even if it is only a parade of one small creature ... something special might come of it, if only we start.
Josh Funk hasn’t played fantasy football in years, and we in the children’s book world are so thankful. To fill the void left by fantasy, Josh began writing for children. Three books later Josh and I finally get to sit down and have a Picturebooking chat.
