What if our love wasn’t conditional? In this sermon, Pastor Chad reveals the ingredients that made Jesus’ love revolutionary – the secret of the most irresistible message ever preached.
God is love. To follow God is to act in love, but what does that mean? Love is a choice. Through Jesus, we choose salvation over condemnation. In the face of hatred, we should choose humility. To change the world, we must choose to give. Love is to listen and to share the truth: no matter who you are or what you’ve done, God loves you.
Jesus came and asked us to follow Him. So why do we follow other Christians instead? All kinds of people call themselves “Christian,” but there is only one Jesus, and he commands us to love. When we look to God’s Word, we see that His love changes lives. Everyone matters to God. If we want to spread the good news, we need to love God and love people.
What would you say if someone walked up to you and asked, "are you a Christian?" What does the word "Christian" mean to you? When both good and evil have acted in the name of Christianity, how can we determine what the truth is? The Bible does not define the word "Christian," but it does tell us how to be disciples of Jesus.
Jesus wants you to receive him, he’s just waiting on your invitation. He loves you, but he will not force himself on you, you must invite him into your life. There is a famous painting in St Paul’s Cathedral in London entitled “The Light of the World” by the artist William Holman Hunt. The painting is of Jesus standing in the doorway of a long unopened door. There is no handle as the door only opens on the inside. Jesus lives. Jesus loves you. Will you invite him in?
As the people drop their palm branches and shout “hosanna” they are literally asking Jesus to “save us” and “save us now”. The people are thinking politically, while Jesus is thinking personally and eternally. Deliverance will come, but in a different way than the people are thinking and expecting. The church partners with Jesus in his salvation efforts. Like a task force doing whatever it can to save someone in danger, the church rallies to fulfill the cry of “Hosanna”. Easter is a great time to invite people to be rescued.
Whatever we put our hope in we worship. This passage fulfills prophecy and is symbolic for what lies ahead for Jesus, the cross. It also reveals what true worship is like. Worship is focused hope. At its max, it is a release of hope that is overwhelming and causes us to surrender all things. For example, some surrender everything to their job, hope and worship are the foundation of that drive. The problem is your job doesn’t love you, it’ll leave you in an instant. People worship and put their hope into all kinds of things, but Jesus loves you and will love you now and forevermore.
We know death, but Jesus knows life. This is true physically and also emotionally and spiritually. Sin brings death and we all sinners. As a result, we are all experiencing death and decay in various forms. But the righteousness and power of Jesus working in and through lives bring life to dead things. Marriages, friendships, hopes, dreams, and ultimately our mortal bodies will be resurrected in Him.
Have you ever noticed that when news reporters go and ask “a Christian” what they think about something they usually go and ask the dumbest one they can find? That drives me crazy. We do not have a blind faith, but a reasonable one. Jesus taught that we are to be “wise as serpents” and “gentle as doves”. He once told a seemingly off-color story about a “shrewd manager” who lies and manipulates his way out of a tough situation and Jesus then praises his ingenuity. Daniel and his friends are shrewd in how they go about things. They live out their faith and are strategic about it. God calls us to do the same.
Daniel was humble. Contrary to popular belief there are no “jerks for Jesus”. God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5), which means humility is the chief virtue of the Christian life. Humility is not weakness or a lack of bravery. It’s quite the opposite. It’s a strength that embraces the sovereignty of God, the reality of who we are and who we aren’t, and submits itself to the care of God with nothing to prove. Humility is a great strength. It releases the favor of God and gives us influence with others.
How did Daniel and his friends thrive even in Babylon? They had great hope. They knew that God is sovereign, which means HE is in control of who is in control. Daniel had great faith in the fact that even though things weren’t the way he wanted them to be, God was still working, and he was still part of God’s plan. We do not have to fret or fear because even if it seems like we’re losing, we know how the big game ends. God wins. Knowing the ending gives us confidence, courage and hope. Hope brings a calm assurance, even in Babylon.
A faith that has never been tested cannot really be trusted. The Bible teaches that the testing of our faith is a good thing that produces growth and endurance. How should we handle the testing of our faith? Should we fight a culture that is godless? Should we flee a culture that is godless? No, the Bible teaches that we should engage. We don’t curse the darkness, nor do we run from it. We live and proclaim the light.
People familiar with the Book of Daniel tend to think of it as an adventure book where the good guys always win, or as a detailed prophetic account of the future. Neither one is totally accurate. It includes adventure and some prophecy, but that’s not the main lesson. The Book of Daniel is about how to follow God in a culture that is Godless. His faith, hope, humility and wisdom are what set him apart. Bad things happen to good people all the time. It’s what we choose to do in those moments that make the difference.
Many of us are afraid of what God might ask us to do. We think His plans will make us miserable and we are afraid to trust Him. The truth is His interruptions are really invitations to something greater. His ways are always better than ours. His purpose might be different than our plans, His purpose may seem impossible, but all things are possible with God and it is in fulfilling His purposes that we find peace. We are responsible for obedience and God is responsible for the outcome.
Many of us do not obey God because we do not understand what we mean to him. We feel unworthy, inadequate, or unloved. Jesus came to the Shepherds first. If anyone in this day and time had feelings of unworthiness or inadequacy it would have been the Shepherds. Yet all through Jesus’ ministry, he chose the least likely to accomplish the most extraordinary. Pray and obey!
We care what people think. Someone who says they don’t care is lying to themselves and that person probably cares the most! The challenge is that pleasing God often means disappointing people. Becoming obsessed with what people think about you is the quickest way to forget what God thinks about you. The quickest way to be free of what people think of you is to remember what God thinks of you. If you’re not ready to be criticized for obeying God, then you’re not ready to be used by God. Extraordinary acts of God often begin with ordinary acts of obedience.
We get used to disappointment. We get comfortable with it. We can become so familiar with the disappointment that we become unfamiliar and blind to what God is doing all around us. We stop praying, we stop hoping, we stop believing and forget who God is and what He can do. Sometimes God awakens the dream that we never thought would come to pass and brings it to fruition.
When angels speak to people they almost always begin with “fear not” or “do not be afraid." This is the most common command in the Bible. In fact, it’s in the Scriptures over 365 times. There’s a “fear not” for every day of the year. Fear paralyzes and keeps us from fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives. When Jesus was born there were several people who had to face their fears and obey God and God used them to change the world. They were afraid and obeyed anyway. You never know what you might set into motion with a simple act of obedience.
Our lives are important but temporary. God did amazing things in and through Elijah, and then he died. In our day, everyone wants to be a “rock star." Instagram, Tik Tok, and the like are fueling this. God loves you, He cares for you, but it’s not all about you. It’s about Him. There is no success without succession and God has Elijah lead and prepare the next generation.
Elijah is in a cave hiding and God speaks to him. God makes a big deal of letting Elijah know that he is not in the big things that Elijah was expecting, but in the small unexpected things. Why does God whisper instead of shout? Because he is close to us. God is in all things; He is closer than we think.
After the big win on Mount Carmel Elijah becomes afraid and runs from the wrath of the evil Queen Jezebel. This is surprising considering all that God has done through the Prophet. In Elijah’s mind, he is running for his life, but the reality is he is running from his life, the life that God called him to. You never want fear to make your decisions. Sometimes what we think we’re protecting is actually preventing us from all that God has for us.
In this passage, Elijah has the showdown with the prophets of Baal. There is literally a faceoff between the Lord God and the little gods. We all have little gods in our lives. Things we trust and put our hope in. The little gods promise what only the Lord God can deliver.
God shapes Elijah through pain to prepare him for the days ahead. He is taught total dependence on God, which prepares him for unconditional obedience. In that obedience, God does miracles in and through Elijah and he becomes known as the “Prophet of God."
The mystery of marriage is that two are now one. This is a moment in time at the wedding and a lifelong process in the marriage. This is both a joy and a challenge. Moses, Paul and Jesus call it a “mystery”. Just as Satan desires to divide and destroy the church he also desires to divide and destroy our marriages and families. Truth unifies. A united marriage is both powerful and fulfilling.
One of the prayers that we want to pray often is the prayer for unity. The church is to be diverse, but not divided. One of the most common themes of the New Testament is unity and most of the epistles are written to address division, bring truth with clarity and in that bring unity. How do we in the church from different backgrounds, different races and different cultures find unity in Jesus?
The Devil is all about division. Especially in the church. One of his main goals is to rip apart the body of Christ. How does he do this? Through lies. He wants us to believe “our truth” and hold our opinions and preferences above everything else. Reality is there is no such things as “your truth”. Truth is objective and therefore lives outside of you. Truth is God’s view on any subject. Truth unifies and frees, while lies divide and enslave.
Before going to the cross Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane for his disciples and for all future believers. In this prayer he prays that we would be “one”. More so, he prays that we would be one in the same way that he and the Father are one. Unity is a big deal to Jesus. Unity is not person driven, but purpose driven. Unity is found in truth. Truth unites.
A house divided will not stand. The irony of unity and peace is that we have to fight for it. In this series, we’ve learned truth unites. What are the family values in your house that everyone unites around? It is right, good and Biblical to regularly discuss what it means to be part of your family.
God will supply our daily needs. Can you trust Him for today? He does not promise that he will provide all of our greeds, but He does promise to supply all of our needs.
Evil has no claim on the children of God. We need not fear the powers of darkness. It has no control over us. In the end, we win.
There is purpose in hard times. Suffering has a place in the Christian life. When Jesus prayed, “your will be done” it involved suffering, but it also fulfilled God’s purposes
Jesus changes everything. In Him, God Almighty is our Abba. He will never leave us nor forsake us. Trusters of Jesus are never alone.
We would be hopeless in our sin without Jesus. He is our hope because he paid it all. Christianity rests on the truth that we have a Savior. We have been set free from our sin.
When the storms of life toss us about, we have an anchor for our souls. The promise of Jesus and the truth of who God anchors us. He is unchanging. He cannot lie. Our hope in His promises remain.
Live your life for Jesus. We’re not on the planning committee; we’re on the welcoming committee.
The Book of Revelation is about Jesus. The first verse is about Jesus and the last verse is about Jesus. Jesus is the main character, the theme is worship and the intent is to unify the church.

One of the most common critiques of the church in America is that its people are judgmental. This is a touchy issue that we are notorious for getting wrong. Doesn’t Jesus say, “Judge not”? Not exactly. Jesus says much more than that, and yes, it’s brilliant. Are we to judge or abstain from judging? Jesus says the answer is “Yes.” The real question is, “Who should we judge?” We are to judge the believin’ not the heathen.
Jesus begins His brilliant sermon with a window into how to experience heaven in the real world. Contrary to popular belief, the kingdom of God is offered to everyone, not just the rich or privileged. Jesus flipped popular belief on its head and taught that the kingdom of God operates counterintuitive to the world. Jesus invites you to join the kingdom.

Although these individuals have grown to the status of “giants” in history, they are real people just like us. As we study their stories we can either learn from their examples or be doomed to repeat their mistakes.

That's the problem. Most of us are far “richer” than we realize. It's one thing to BE rich and another thing to be good at it.
