The global SaaS (Software as a Service) market is worth billions of dollars. But it won't stay there. Analysts predict that by 2032, it will exceed $1 trillion in value. But it comes as no surprise.

Today’s job market is fast-paced and competitive—to a cut-throat level, I dare to say. Thus, businesses try hard to keep the best talent inside their organisations.
Why is this crucial? Because a high turnover disrupts operations, as it takes many hours for new staff to learn the ropes. In fact, the financial burden is staggering.
The Centre for American Progress reports that the cost of replacing a mid-range employee (earning $30,000-$50,000 annually) is equivalent to 21% of a yearly salary. For high-level or more specialised roles, that figure may climb to over 200%.
These costs include the direct expenses of recruitment and training, along with indirect losses, such as decreased morale and productivity.
On the causes for leaving a company, LinkedIn Global Talent Trendsfound that 60% of employees blame career development, regardless of the organisation’s size, while 45% factor in compensation.
Meanwhile, the Society for Human Resource Management’s 2021 Employee Turnover Survey discovered that annual turnover rates across various industries hover around 20%.
Therefore, to avoid falling behind, companies adopt creative strategies to boost workforce satisfaction, which translates into high engagement.
With this in mind, we’ve created this episode to help our listeners explore practical methods for improving employee retention and ensuring their company’s smooth operation.

We have all heard about the phrase reduce, reuse, and recycle. They symbolise the balance we should maintain with our environment—a balance that shields us from the harmful effects of waste.
The three Rs centre around minimising consumption and the use of resources in production. Also, to lower our energy demand and the waste we generate.
But first, let’s compare biodegradable and compostable. Our readers often ask about this.
What’s the Difference Between Biodegradable and Compostable?Biodegradable materials are designed to break down naturally thanks to microorganisms. ‘Over time’ could mean weeks or centuries.
However, not every biodegradable material breaks down effectively in landfills, leaving harmful residues.
Compostable materials, on the other hand, promise to decompose within a specific time frame given the right temperature, moisture level, and oxygen conditions.
Besides, they leave a nutrient-rich compost that can be later used as a fertiliser with no toxic remnants. In short, they vanish without a trace.
Understanding compostables, let’s explore sustainability’s core principles.

Did you know that heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide?
Quite often, the culprit behind this appalling statistic is the silent buildup of plaque in arteries, influenced by cholesterol levels.
While genetics can predispose you to heart disease, you can take the reins of your heart's health by eating the right foods.
Just as highways and railways make a country’s economy thrive, arteries carry oxygen and nutrients throughout the body to ensure everything runs smoothly.
However, when cholesterol concentrations get out of control, plaque forms, narrowing arteries and limiting blood flow. This scenario increases your susceptibility to myocardial infarction, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.
Unless your state is critical, your diet can help manage your lipid concentrations and promote healthy arteries.
By including specific foods into your meals, you add natural ways to improve your heart health and overall well-being.

A study published in the journal Science Advances revealed that just five companies are responsible for 24% of all plastic waste worldwide.
The Moore Institute for Plastic Pollution Research in California conducted the investigation, analysing plastic waste collected from 2018 to 2022.
Among the more than 1.8 million pieces of waste gathered, over 900,000 had visible labelling, allowing experts to pinpoint that less than 60 companies are the main sources of global plastic waste.
Coca-Cola, the largest contributor, was responsible for 11% of the total branded plastic pollution, followed by PepsiCo, Nestlé, Danone, and Altria.
Despite corporate claims of prioritising recycling, the escalating pollution levels suggest a discrepancy between their statements and reality, raising questions about the recyclability of plastics compared to materials such as glass and aluminium.

In a world where a microscopic entity can halt the hustle and bustle of entire nations, the importance of vaccines cannot be overstated.
Our well-orchestrated immune system is indeed a fortress, but vaccines are the seasoned warriors that fortify these walls, teaching our bodies to recognise, combat, and remember deadly invaders.
Vaccines have been the world’s allies in battling infectious diseases, dramatically reducing mortality rates and, in a few cases, eradicating the foes altogether.
For instance, before the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, major outbreaks led to about 2.6 million deaths each year globally. Fast forward to now, and that figure has plummeted by over 95%.
But creating these medical marvels is no small feat.
It’s a complex, rigorous, expensive, and lengthy expedition from the lab bench to the veins of individuals around the globe.
But how does this journey unfold? How are vaccines crafted, tested, and rolled out to the masses?

We find plastics everywhere we look, from streets, beaches, and forests to the seabed and the Arctic ice. They could be bottles, bags, food containers, syringes, or candy wraps.
Plastics do not biodegrade; they just break down into smaller fragments over time, turning into ‘micro- and nanoplastics’.
Once synthetic polymers disintegrate, they can be dragged by water and wind because of their microscopic size.
And now, scientists have detected plastic particles in a new place: clouds floating above mountains.
The Sky is Not the Limit
A peer-reviewed study published in Environmental Chemistry Letters, the first of its kind, found that clouds around Japan’s Mount Fuji and Mount Oyama contain alarming levels of plastic.
Hiroshi Okochi, a professor at Waseda University and author of the investigation, pointed out that plastic pollution can reach long distances and contaminate the planet’s crops and fresh water through ‘plastic rainfall’.
The analysis showed that in the samples collected, the amount of man-made polymers was so high that researchers believe it might cause clouds to form while emitting greenhouse gases.
“If the issue of plastic air pollution is not addressed proactively, climate change and ecological risks may become a reality, causing irreversible and serious environmental damage in the future.”

In today’s digital age, online security and privacy are more important than ever.
With the rising number of cyberattacks and data breaches, taking steps to protect your personal information and browsing activity is crucial.
One tool that has gained significant popularity in recent years is a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
But what is a VPN, and how can you use it?
In TFoA’s episode, we’ll explore everything you need to know about VPNs, including their pros and cons and how to go for the best fit.
What is a VPN? The Basics
In simple terms, a Virtual Private Network is a technology that creates a secure and encrypted connection between your device and the internet.
It’s like a cloak of invisibility that will shield you from prying eyes — a virtual tunnel, allowing your data to pass through without being intercepted by hackers or government agencies.
A VPN ensures that your online activities, such as browsing, streaming, and file sharing, remain private and protected.
How Does a VPN Work?
Every time you connect to the internet, your device sends and receives data through your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
So your ISP can see your browsing history, track your digital operations, and even sell your preferences to advertisers.
However, when you use a Virtual Private Network, your data is first encrypted by your device and then sent to a server based in a different location.
From there, your information is decrypted and directed to its destination on the web.

Greetings, fellow bibliophiles!
Ever found yourself standing in a bookstore or hovering the “Buy Now” button online, torn between the allure of a physical book and the convenience of an e-book?
Ah, the eternal question: “To hold or to swipe?”
In the realm of physical books, it’s a sensory ballet - a dance of fingertips across the textured tapestry of pages, tracing each line like a lover’s whisper.
It is the olfactory embrace of ink and paper, a scent that tells tales of both fresh chapters and time-worn tomes.
The subtle ritual of moistening your finger to tenderly flip to the next page, and even the bittersweet sting of an occasional paper cut, a small tribute to your devotion.
And the grand finale - a rite of passage, if you will. The moment when you reverently place the completed tome on a sprawling, lustrous bookshelf, as if laying a crown jewel in a treasure chest of literary wonders.
“I love the smell of book ink in the morning.” Umberto Eco
On the flip side, there’s the appeal of the e-book - a digital canvas glowing in the palm of your hand, with its cold and sleek screen as a moonlit lake.
This debate has been a tale as old as 1971, when the first e-book flickered into existence, challenging the ink and paper dominion.
For me, the essence lies not in the medium but in the act - the sacred communion of reading, by any means necessary.
Today, we shall wade into the depths of this argument, not to sway your choice, but to revel in the sheer joy of literary exploration.
But before we embark on this journey, let us unfurl the scrolls of history, tracing the lineage of both physical tomes and their digital counterparts.

If you’ve ever found yourself, standing in the grocery store aisle, pondering whether to reach for the organic tomatoes, or their conventional counterparts, you’re not alone.
The organic versus conventional food debate, has been a hot topic for years.
So, let’s dig in and explore the pros and cons of each, to help you make an informed decision.
Let’s start with the Eco-Friendly Appeal. Benefits of Organic Food.Organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides, which are harmful to both humans and the environment.
Studies have shown, small to moderate increases in some nutrients, in chemical-free products, but the difference with conventional food is minimal.
Many people claim natural foods taste better, although this is subjective.
Drawbacks of Organic Food.Organic produce often spoils faster, because of the lack of preservatives.
They are more expensive, due to the labour-intensive farming practices involved.
Let’s move on with the Traditional Route. Advantages of Conventional Food.Conventional foods are cheaper, making them more accessible, to a broader range of consumers.
Thanks to preservatives, they have a longer shelf life, and are available in more grocery stores.
Disadvantages of Conventional Food. They can hold pesticide residues, although they usually fall within safety limits, set by regulatory agencies.
Regular farming uses synthetic chemicals, which are toxic to the environment and yourself.
While these substances, are effective in controlling pests and promoting crop yield, their health risks have led to the ban or restriction of a few of them, in various countries.

In today’s episode, we will tell you a bit of the history of the brown gold, its production process, the biggest producers, and tips on how to best enjoy it.
A Brief History of Chocolate
Chocolate comes from the seeds of the cacao tree, which grow in tropical regions around the globe.
It has been consumed since at least the Olmec civilisation in Mesoamerica, dating back to the 19th–11th centuries BCE. The Mayans and Aztecs also enjoyed chocolate beverages before European contact.
Christopher Columbus encountered cacao beans during his fourth mission to the Americas and introduced them to Spain.
Nevertheless, chocolate didn’t gain traction in Europe until Spanish friars presented it to the Spanish court.
Initially consumed as a beverage, the Spanish added sugar and honey to counter its natural bitterness.
By the 17th century, chocolate had become a European staple.

Scientists, at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, have made a ground-breaking discovery in the energy sector.
By adding a simple sugar, to a flow battery, they have increased the battery’s energy storage, and durability by 60%.
The new flow battery technology design, engineered for the electrical grid, has shown its capacity, to store and release energy continuously for over a year.
This next-generation flow battery, could give rise to future low-cost and sustainable systems, that could keep solar and wind power, for weeks and even months.
What is a flow battery? A flow battery, is an electrochemical cell, that gets its energy from two electroactive materials.
These materials, are dissolved in liquid electrolytes, and pumped from tanks through a system, on either side of a membrane.
The membrane between them, serves as the path for ions movement.
The positive electrolyte solution, is called catholyte, and the negative one, is called anolyte.

Alef Aeronautics, a Californian automaker, became the first to get approval from the US Government, to test the world’s first real flying car.
Never before, has this happened with a vehicle like this.
The Federal Aviation Administration granted Alef, a Special Airworthiness Certification, allowing the company, to test on the roads, and in the air.
The automaker unveiled, its Model “A” electric flying vehicle, in October 2022, and has since received deposits for pre-orders, that start at $300,000.
Yes, that’s the price.
Jim Dukhovny, Alef’s CEO, declared, “It allows us, to move closer to bringing people, an environmentally friendly and faster commute, saving individuals and companies hours each week.”
“This is one small step for planes, one giant step for cars.”
Dukhovny, said he expected the vehicle to be available, in the last quarter of 2025. So, there’s still time to save some money to get it.
Alef’s Model “A” characteristics. The design of this roadable aircraft, allows for both street driving and vertical takeoff. As well as to integrate seamlessly, with current urban infrastructure, including streets, highways, and parking facilities.
This flying car, which can carry up to two people, is likely to have a road range, of around 320 kilometres, and a flying range of about 177.
Imagine slashing your electricity bills in half while using a greener energy source.
Today's episode is about perovskite, a material that offers a 50% higher efficiency rate than silicon.
Let’s dive into how this ‘miracle material’ is set to change the game.
A Chinese startup called Renshine Solar is ready to start the commercialisation of perovskite solar panels, after researchers from Nanjing University in China, made the mass production of these panels possible. Professor Tan Hairen, creator of Renshine Solar, said that the raw materials used to make perovskite are cheap and abundant, while costing just one-twentieth of traditional PV modules.
The advent of perovskite solar panels happened just in time, as we are on the brink of an energy revolution. Their promising efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and versatility, are laying the foundation for the next generation of photovoltaic modules, and a global solar power boom. However, as with any emerging technology, we must watch with a critical eye. How long do perovskite solar panels last? What are their limitations and disadvantages? Can they be recycled with minimal waste?

Imagine biting into a juicy piece of chicken, that didn’t come from a farm, but from a lab. Sounds like science fiction? Well, not quite.
The US Agriculture Department, has given the green light to California-based GOOD Meat, to sell their chicken produced from cultured cells, heralding a new era, of sustainable meat production.
The approval, came after the Food and Drug Administration, confirmed in March this year, that cultivated chicken was safe for consumers.
Along with GOOD Meat, The Agriculture Department, also approved lab-grown chicken from UPSIDE Foods, which had already received regulatory acceptance from the FDA, in November 2022.
From now on, GOOD Meat and UPSIDE Foods, can offer their products to restaurants, and, fingers crossed, in a little while, supermarkets.
Solar energy is the most popular, and affordable way to generate electricity off-grid.
However, a common question is, “How many solar panels do I need, to power my home?” This, will depend on your energy needs, location, and the number of sunlight hours you get.
Energy demand is higher during the summer, due to air conditioning use, and in the winter, because of heating needs.
Look at your electricity bills during these periods, for a clearer picture of your energy consumption.
Once you have, a clearer panorama of those peak times of the year, read the labels of your appliances, which show the wattage per hour they consume.
After having your everyday energy usage, divide that total, by the number of sun hours you get in a day.
Now, calculate your solar panels.
Given that solar panels, produce electricity from the sun’s rays during daylight, it’s key to know how many hours of sunlight, your home receives in one day.
On a daily basis, the average number of peak sun hours is five. Though it depends on the country and season.
If you get those 5 hours of sun rays, 1 kilowatt of solar panels, would produce five kilowatt-hours.
So, if your daily energy consumption, is 25 kilowatt-hours, 5 kilowatts of photovoltaic cells, will suffice to energise your home.
Discover how Vertical Farming, an innovative and sustainable approach to food production, could revolutionise agriculture and help build a more food-secure future.
For thousands of years, we have relied on traditional agriculture to cultivate crops, and raise livestock, which has been essential for our survival, and societal growth.
This practice involves a complex system of planting, irrigation, and harvest, including heavy machinery and chemicals, like fertilisers and pesticides.
Even though traditional agriculture has been crucial in feeding the world, it has also caused considerable damage, including deforestation, soil degradation, water pollution, and high levels of carbon emissions.
Along came Vertical Farming.
Vertical Farming, refers to the practice of cultivating crops, in vertically stacked layers, or on inclined surfaces, within controlled indoor environments.
These layers, can be integrated into other structures, such as skyscrapers, repurposed warehouses, shipping containers, or custom-built facilities.
Its major advantage, is that it allows farming in urban settings, where land availability is limited.
Discover how these technologies are helping to combat climate change, promote a healthier world, and create a cleaner future.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres accused energy giants of ‘feasting on hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies and windfall profits while households’ budgets shrink and our planet burns.’ Guterres called on rich economies to hit oil and gas companies with new windfall taxes to provide help for countries suffering from climate change, and those struggling with soaring energy and food costs. He also said that we needed to hold fossil fuel companies and their enablers to account, including banks, private equity, asset managers, and other financial institutions that continue to invest and underwrite carbon pollution.
Nearly $2.7bn from US taxpayers was what the Biden administration has approved in new aid for Ukraine and allies. Of this amount, $675m will go in weapons to Ukraine to fight the Russians. So far, the US has pledged at least $13bn from your money, American worker, in military aid to Ukraine. Remember that politicians do whatever they want with your money. You will never be asked if it’s correct or not. They just use the country’s resources for their own benefit, not people’s interests. Keep that in mind.
Over the weekend, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Greece of occupying demilitarised islands in the Aegean Sea, warning that Turkey will do ‘what’s necessary’ when the time comes. Turkish president even warned Turkey could come down suddenly one night. Another dinosaur threatening to wage war in Europe. Jurassic leaders want to drag the world to another global conflict, since they are not satisfied with the current situation.
No more gas for Europe until the West lifts sanctions. This tug of war will not end. In the mud is the population, bearing the brunt of the struggle between NATO and Russia. We will all lose in this new version of the Cold War. Russia won’t resume gas supplies, and NATO won’t lift sanctions. So, we are all cornered in this battle between dinosaurs.
€65bn to help households and companies manage skyrocketing prices, is what Olaf Scholz announced to get through this winter. Scholz has accused electricity producers of making excessive profits in this crisis. A few energy companies, which may not be using gas to generate electricity, are using the excuse of high gas prices to make big money. Analyse this. If companies are struggling with high prices of raw materials, for instance, how come those companies treble their income? It makes no sense. If they are making more money is because they are having lower operating costs, aren’t they? Under European Union rules, electricity prices are determined by the price of the most expensive fuel, which is usually gas. Meaning that companies do not base the price on their overheads.
A few days ago, two people died and four more were in hospital from a mysterious pneumonia in Tucuman, Argentina, driving fears of a new viral outbreak. Argentina’s Ministry of Health informed that Legionella was the culprit, adding that authorities are investigating the source. The official name of the illness is Legionnaires’ disease, which is a serious type of pneumonia caused by legionella bacteria. People can get sick when they breathe small droplets of water containing the bacteria, causing an infection in the lungs.
President Biden’s words in Philadelphia are sparking online calls for violence, including death threats against himself. Senior counterterrorism officials fear that calling Trump supporters extremists would be viewed as a call to arms, inflaming the already volatile political environment.
As families face the choice between eating or heating this winter, energy companies will make an extra £170 billion. These companies, at your expense, are profiting as never before while saying that they are increasing prices because of Russia. Bloomberg published leaked Treasury forecasts, revealing that the spiralling crisis will massively profit energy giants with a whopping £170 billion. This prediction will be delivered to the next Prime Minister on 6 September.
$1.3 trillion is what Poland estimates Germany owes it because of the losses caused by Nazi Germany during World War II. The ballpark figure was calculated, in a conservative method, by Law and Justice, the political party currently ruling Poland. This party has repeatedly called for compensations since it took power in 2015, but not officially. Around 6 million Poles, including 3 million Polish Jews, were massacred by the Nazis. Warsaw was also razed to the ground after a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.
Gazprom, the Russian energy giant, said on Friday that all natural gas supplies to Europe via Nord Stream 1 would remain cut off indefinitely after an apparent oil leak was discovered. That was the pretext this time. This action hinders Europe’s efforts to secure enough power for a tough winter ahead. Imagine the prices now. Companies will charge you as never before, profiting themselves, of course.
First Solar will invest $1.2bn in a new factory in the United States. With this move, the big solar panel manufacturer will increase to four the number of its plants in America. President Joe Biden signed the energy and climate bill earlier this month. This law authorises hundreds of billions of dollars in federal tax credits, grants and loans in an effort to encourage companies and individuals to switch to renewable energy and electric cars, thereby fighting climate change. Green energy businesses, such as First Solar, greatly benefit from this bill.
Nvidia and AMD were ordered to stop selling some of their technology to China, since it can be used for artificial intelligence or military purposes. The US government told these two companies to halt exports of certain high-performance chips to the Asian giant, due to a potential future use against America in the future.
The UK is getting the worst of the energy crisis, more than any other country in Europe. It is far more unequal compared with the rest of the continent, according to the International Monetary Fund. The reason is the UK’s heavy reliance on gas to heat homes and produce electricity at a time when Russia’s war in Ukraine has made a mess on the prices. Furthermore, the UK has the least energy-efficient houses in western Europe.
Last Wednesday, John Lewis Partnership announced that it will offer free food to all its employees during their work hours for three months starting in October. A good example to follow. This leading British retailer, which owns supermarkets, department stores, and provides banking services, plans to feed 88,000 workers over the winter to help them cope with the rising costs of living, alleviating their burdens of energy bills and petrol prices.
Two people have died from a mysterious pneumonia in Argentina, driving fears of a new viral outbreak. Health officials there said that four more are in hospital with this disease of unknown origin. This sounds familiar. The same happened in 2019 in Wuhan, China, just before the surge of Covid-19. The worrying part is that Covid, flu, and hantavirus were ruled out as the causative agents. These cases appeared in a private hospital in Tucuman, a small region located around 1,200 km northwest from the capital Buenos Aires.
A Civil War in the United States is somewhat likely in the next 10 years. This was the creepy result of a survey where over 40% of Americans believe this catastrophic situation could happen. In the poll, round 65% of all respondents said that political violence had increased since the start of 2021, while 62% thought political violence would increase in the next few years. In Democrats and independents, the figure was about 40%, but in Republicans it was an astonishing 54%.
Last Tuesday Defence Ministers of the European Union met to debate alternatives to ramp up weapons production, boost military training for the Ukrainian armed forces while inflicting heavy costs on Russia. Europe is depleting its weapons stocks. They’ve sent a lot to Ukraine, so they need to refill them.
French company Engie has seen its gas deliveries reduced since Russian energy firm Gazprom has slashed supplies. Is it a political measure? Of course, it is. France has sent weapons to Ukraine to fight Russia there. It was going to happen sooner or later. Gazprom informed Engie the reduction was because of disagreements between the parties on the application of several contracts. That was the excuse.
Four in five Americans believe that truthful coverage of Hunter Biden’s laptop would have changed the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, according to a poll. Look. 79%, that’s a big number, said it was somewhat likely that a truthful interpretation of the laptop would have resulted in the re-election of Donald Trump, instead of Joe Biden.
In an interview with Joe Rogan, Mark Zuckerberg admitted Facebook deliberately suppressed stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020. Three weeks before the election, the New York Post revealed the sordid content of Hunter Biden’s laptop, showing compromising photos of the presidential candidate’s son and his questionable business dealings implicating his father. This shows us how easily tech firms and mainstream media can undermine democracy. Just to clarify. The FBI visited Zuckerberg in 2020, and they received the laptop in 2019. So, the FBI already knew about the content of the laptop when they talked to Zuckerberg.
It’s official. From October households in Great Britain will face a gigantic leap in energy bills after Ofgem raised the energy price cap to £3,549 a year. People are already struggling with the soaring inflation, and now this? Really? Why not force companies to stop the increase? Why not have an emergency meeting all the European leaders and find a solution to this insanity? Of course, they meet to send billions in weapons to Ukraine, but God saves them from meeting to save Europeans from companies squeezing the population. This is not about war, this is about greed.
German authorities have implemented a series of measures to save energy in the country, anticipating a possible cut in gas supply from Russia. From September, just a week ahead, public buildings, but no hospitals, will be heated to a maximum of 19 Celsius degrees, and the heating may be turned off completely in entrances, corridors, and foyers. Public monuments and buildings won’t be lit up for aesthetic reasons, including the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. At the same time, business would not be allowed to keep their shops illuminated at night.
A humanitarian crisis might be the consequence of the soaring energy bills in the UK unless the government takes action, and I mean, right away. According to experts, freezing gas and electricity prices over the next winters would cost the UK roughly £100bn, more than it spent paying millions of people’s salaries during the pandemic. Seriously? Instead of controlling the costs, the solution is to pay companies? Why not reach an international agreement and force corporations to reduce their high prices?
British Gas has announced it will donate 10% of its profits to help its poorest customers manage rising gas and electricity bills for the duration of the energy crisis. It seems that Centrica, British Gas owner, will give money to the impoverished to help them pay the energy bill generated by Centrica. It’s like “I’m giving you some cash so you can pay me back.” Why not reduce the price by 10% instead? Wouldn’t it be better for people?
Germany is at the forefront of green energy use with its new and first ever rail line entirely run on hydrogen-powered trains. From this Wednesday, fourteen trains powered by hydrogen will move on the route in Bremervörde, in Lower Saxony.
What we are seeing today in Ukraine is the return of obsolete concepts brought in by a handful of individuals who still believe in the ‘divide and conquer’ policy, while paving the way to submerge our societies into war, famine, ashes, fear, and violence. This smells to be the launch of Cold War 2.0, but the question is, who has the upper hand in this one?
Micron Technology, one of the biggest chip makers in the United States, plans to invest over $40bn in semiconductor manufacturing following the US Congress subsidies under the CHIPS and Science Act, which was signed by President Biden last Tuesday. This bill approved by the US Congress, is a bid to reduce America’s reliance on Taiwan and China for semiconductors used in electronics, weapon systems, cars, and appliances. Something good from the Biden administration. I reckon this could bear fruit in the short run.
The Pentagon announced Friday that the United States will send another $775m in missiles, drones, vehicles, and mine clearing equipment to Ukraine to help fight back the Russian attack. When is it more than enough? How much money would the American taxpayers continue to give to Ukraine? The money given to Ukraine is money from American citizens, those who work and pay taxes, and are dealing with high petrol prices and high food prices. Do you think this is fair?
In theory, most of arable land should be used to grow wheat, corn, potatoes, amongst other agricultural products. But most of the agricultural land in England, round 85%, serves as pasture for grazing animals such as cows, or to grow food which is then given to livestock. It is an incredibly inefficient used of soil which should be used for food production for all of us rather than using the vast majority to feed ruminants, or pigs or chickens.
Chinese troops will go to Russia for large military exercises amid heightened tensions over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia wants to present this week-long manoeuvres as a symbol of international support despite sanctions and other efforts from the West to isolate the country due to its war in Ukraine. On a regular basis, the military exercises called Vostok, involve hundreds of thousands of troops simulating war games – a massive attendance. However, Russia may have fewer troops and vehicles in this year’s drills because its army is bogged down in Ukraine and is attempting to prevent a potential counterattack in the country’s south.
The Office for National Statistics published Wednesday that the annual consumer price inflation bust the double-digit barrier to hit 10.1%, up from 9.4% in June. It's the highest level in 14 years. The largest contributor to the acceleration was soaring food prices with a 12.7%, including bread, cereals, milk, cheese, and eggs. A Reuters poll of economists had foreseen an inflation number, but they fell short of their prediction.
White House Covid-19 Response Coordinator said Tuesday that the Biden administration will stop buying Covid-19 vaccines, treatments, and tests as early as this fall. The US government is getting out of the acute emergency phase, so no more vaccines paid by the government. It is expected that in 2023 companies will commercialise almost all these products, if not all of them. Hence, if you need a vaccine or a treatment, you’d probably get it from your doctor or a hospital.
Fuel poverty could be the fate of over two-thirds of all UK households by January, as shown in a study published by the University of York. It is estimated the annual energy bills will top £4,200 from January, which is at least two month’s wages. Middle-income households are struggling to pay their bills. 18 million families – 45 million people - are trying to make ends meet after further predicted rises in energy prices in October and January.
To avoid a catastrophe this winter, the Green Party has called for the permanent nationalisation of the main energy supply companies, and at the same time, to reduce domestic fuel bills to last autumn’s levels. They say this is the solution to the failed experiment with a market-based energy system, while stating that this proposal goes well beyond Labour’s idea for a freeze on energy bills. But this is not the first time an organisation proposes such a measure. Earlier this month, The Trades Union Congress said the government should cover the costs of the £1,500 increase for households, plus taking the energy firms into public ownership.
Last Friday, Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger warned that the United States could be on the edge of war with Russia and China, as the Biden administration struggles with historically low relations with these two autocratic regimes. He suggested that American leaders have troubles defining a direction in today’s political climate, contributing to rising global tensions.
Last Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Western nations to provide more money to help Ukraine’s military keep fighting Russia. The West is sending more money and weapons to one of the most corrupt governments in Europe, where there’s no accountability for the money sent or the whereabouts of the weapons this country is receiving from Western nations.
Unless extra help is given to households, next year energy bills will cost more than two month’s wages. Based on the Bank of England forecasts, the monthly pay for the average worker will be around £2,000 next year, while the annual cost of energy is predicted to be £4,200.
Prolonged dry conditions and a significant drop in rainfall this summer across wide swathes of England caused the National Drought Group to declare an official drought. The last time a drought was announced was in 2018. The Environment Agency has moved into drought eight of its 14 areas: Devon and Cornwall, Solent and South Downs, Kent and south London, Herts and north London, East Anglia, Thames, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, and the East Midlands. Yorkshire and West Midlands might be pushed into drought in late August.
In an endangered world affected by a constant plastic pollution, companies are investing billions of dollars to ramp up the production of plastics made from natural and renewable materials that, in one way or another, can be composted or biodegradable. In the first three months of 2022, investment in this sector reached $500m, raising from $350m in the same period in 2021.
The Biden administration is ready to send a new $1bn security assistance package to Ukraine. Again. More money from the US taxpayers. Some detractors complained about this new package, arguing that these funds could be better spent combating inflation and other domestic issues.
The US Federal Reserve is aiming at the wrong target. What is on fire is the forest, not the house. Last Wednesday, the US Federal Reserve raised interest, again, by three quarters of a percentage point and signalled more rate increases to come. The hikes in interest rate are hitting those who work rather than corporations responsible for most price increase.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, European countries have faced the need to replace Russian energy as fast as possible. Europe needs to diversify and decarbonise its energy sources faster than initially planned. To achieve that goal, some countries believe the continent must ramp up the use of hydrogen. Hydrogen can store vast amounts of energy, replacing natural gas in industrial processes like producing steel, aside from powering fuel cells in trucks, trains, ships, or planes, emitting nothing but vapour of drinkable water. Nevertheless, it is not clear if the large-scale use of hydrogen can be made viable.
The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global emissions, as stated by the United Nations – more than aviation and shipping combined. Are fashion brands doing anything to counter the effects of greenhouse gas emissions?
Monkeypox sounds alarms in the world. The most recent outbreak started in Africa, but since then it has spread to other countries. New York City officials declared Monkeypox a public health emergency on Saturday, making the city the epicentre of the state’s outbreak. New York was not the first city to declare a health emergency – it was San Francisco last Thursday. San Francisco Mayor, London Breed, said the virus impacts everyone equally, but those in the LGBTQ community are at greater risk right now.
Ukrainian president and his wife are taking a time out from the war in their country to strike a pose for Vogue Magazine. Volodymyr Zelensky, supposed to be fighting a war with Russia, is posing for a fashion magazine. What is so fashionable about war? Why is Olena Zelenska posing with soldiers and destruction with designer clothes, perfect hair, and makeup?
Inflation has the power to change the course of history, telling us it’s not only about purchasing power, or money in the bank. Inflation is related to the world order.
Ukraine is an absolute money hole. Recently, the Financial Times published a report about the concern between NATO and European Union leaders regarding the fate of all the weapons they have sent to Ukraine. CNN also covered that angle a few weeks ago when Pentagon officials admitted that once those weapons enter Ukraine, they just disappear. Nobody knows where they go. According to the Financial Times, European Union states are pushing for better tracking of the weapons supplied to Ukraine.
Once again, the number of new Covid cases is rising. While the virus is not killing as many as it used to, thanks to vaccines, it’s still wreaking havoc round the world. Who’s to blame? The newest variant BA.5, which so far is the most infectious and transmissible, and according to the World Health Organisation, is responsible for about half of all coronavirus cases globally and round 80% of recent cases.
The Russian state-run company Gazprom, has strangled its gas supply to Europe, sending just 20% of its usual delivery. A representative of the Russian company said Gazprom remains as a reliable guarantor of its obligations, but it cannot guarantee the pumping of gas if they cannot maintain the imported devices because of European sanctions.
The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions against Russia, because of the invasion of Ukraine, affecting its banking system and other areas of its economy. But there’s something that doesn’t have too much media coverage: no sanctions are focused on rare earth minerals, such as uranium, since western countries need those natural resources to survive. All these minerals, not punished by the west, are essential to keep moving the wheel in Europe’s economies, including nuclear power.
Just a few days ago, Russia and China joined forces to do what many thought inconceivable. Something that could mean a dramatic shift of the entire world economic order. Russia and China are set to create their own reserve currency, in this way de-dollarising their economies. They will base their new currency on rare earth minerals. These two countries plan to stop using the US dollar as their reserve currency, and it might create a domino effect.
Only one in seven people in low-income countries is fully vaccinated. What do you think would be the consequence of that? The causative agent of Covid – SARS-CoV-2 – has shown its capacity to mutate into something more dangerous and infectious. The consequence? Well, what is happening now with the new variant BA.5, which is the most contagious strain of the virus so far, causing a spike in infections worldwide. BA.5 cleverly evades immune defence because of its mutations. And those mutations can be attributed to the way the pathogen circulates worldwide. The more the virus spread, the more opportunities it has to mutate — it’s a matter of logic, isn’t it?
With the economic crisis hitting hard, people all over the US are going to food banks. This hideous situation captures the reality of the policies of the US administration. What is President Joe Biden doing to palliate the impact of the recession?
The most infectious and transmissible variant of coronavirus yet has arrived – BA.5. It is way beyond more transmissible than earlier versions of Omicron. This is considered the worst version of the virus so far as it takes immune escape to the next level. This new strain is fuelling a global surge in cases estimated at 30% over the past fortnight. Although this strain appears not to lead to serious illness, health experts anticipate a boom in hospitalisations. The only wall stopping the virus from becoming lethal is the vaccines. BA.5 is a clear signal that the pandemic is far from over.
Motivation is of paramount importance, but temporary – simply a spark, a feeble flame. Provided that we cannot always stay motivated, we’ve got to develop our self-discipline as it is permanent and keeps the blaze burning.

The vast majority of Americans across party lines are unhappy with the situation of the United States according to new polls. The Associated Press poll, released last Wednesday, revealed that 85% of US adults consider that things in the US are headed in the wrong direction with only 14% believing things are going in the right direction. These results are even more pessimistic than those from May this year, when 78% said that things were wrong and 21% said that things were right.
Jon Voight, the academy award-winning actor and father to Angelina Jolie, is calling for President Joe Biden’s impeachment. Voight didn’t say exactly why Biden should be impeached for, but he believes the president has wronged the nation.
Last Friday the United States announced a whopping $820m in new military assistance to Ukraine, including surface-to-air missile systems and counter-artillery radars. At the same time, the Pentagon will provide Ukraine with 150,000 rounds of artillery ammunition. Apart from the shells, the Pentagon will also supply Ukraine with counter-artillery radars and ammunition for the medium-range rocket systems HIMARS.
The Changing Markets Foundation says that companies such as Coca-Cola and Unilever are misleading when they say they are eco-friendly. This organisation calls it misleading greenwashing. The report presented by Changing Markets Foundation is just the tip of the iceberg.

A few hours after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, abolishing the constitutional right to abortion, it became illegal in multiple US states. Utah was one of the first states doing it with its abortion ban coming into effect on Friday night. Half of US states are expected to ban this practice as well.
Prices are continuing to rise, the fastest rate for 40 years, as food, energy, and petrol continue to climb. The Office for National Statistics informed that the UK inflation increased to 9.1% in the 12 months to May, from 9% in April. Inflation could reach 11% this year.
President Joe Biden signed a new bill considered the major federal gun safety legislation in decades. After signing the bill, Biden said: “God willing, it’s going to save a lot of lives.” This law came in the aftermath of recent mass shootings at Uvalde, Texas, elementary school, and a Buffalo New York supermarket in a predominantly black neighbourhood.
Two Omicron sub-variants - BA.4 and BA.5 - appear to escape antibody responses amongst those with previous Covid infection and those fully vaccinated and boosted.
However, vaccines are still expected to provide substantial protection against severe disease.
At the moment, pharmaceuticals are working on updated shots to elicit a stronger immune response against these variants.
The Omicron variants escaping from antibodies means that there’s a higher risk for reinfection, even in people who had prior immunity against the virus.
The International Energy Agency director, Fatih Birol, has warned that Russia may stop its gas supply to Europe this winter.
He believes that a complete shutdown is not the most likely scenario but Europe needs to work on contingency plans – you know, just in case.
In recent weeks, several European countries have seen less Russian gas than expected. Russian officials said it’s not on purpose, just technical issues.
China has increased its Russian oil imports by 55% this year, displacing Saudi Arabia as the top supplier. It’s a defiance to western sanctions on Russian oil and gas. While Europe is struggling with gas and possibly in the near future with oil, China is buying Russian oil at a cheaper price. Russia is pumping an estimated 1.9 million barrels per day via its pipelines and seaborne shipments. This indicates that Moscow, after all, is able to find buyers for its oil. India has also bought Russian oil with some discount.
Today, the US Supreme Court has ruled that the constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.
This resolution from the high court upended a precedent set nearly 50 years ago in the landmark Roe v Wade case.
Now the United States, along with Poland, Nicaragua and El Salvador, are the only countries in the world to restrict abortion.
President Joe Biden said that the American people are ‘really really down’ after a turbulent two years with the coronavirus pandemic, the volatility in the economy and petrol prices, which are slamming family budgets. Biden emphasised that he inherited a battered economy. Was he not prepared to face this situation? Is he still blaming others?
Do you think that President Joe Biden is doing what it takes to keep afloat the economy?
He’s blamed the two-year pandemic and Russia for the US problems such as petrol prices.
Why not the companies for increasing prices?
Transgender women have been excluded from women’s swimming elite events and from playing in women’s international rugby league matches. It already happened in Cycling. In April this year, the International Cycling Union suspended a transgender cyclist in the UK, Emily Bridges, claiming that her participation was ‘unfair to all women cyclists.’ Do you think this is a fair resolution?
Electric cars have been around for a while and apparently, they are the future of transport for everybody. However, EVs rely on the electric grid to recharge once their batteries are depleted. There’s another way to charge batteries:using the solar energy through panels. In November this year, the first car with solar panels will be available for sale. The name of the car is Lightyear, yes, like the movie – and it looks very promising.
We all procrastinate. But till what point this is harmful. Our life is about decisions, whether it’s approaching or dodging something, which is totally fine. The issue comes when you intend to take action. However, you do nothing or you keep neglecting your duties until the deadline is about to expire. Everybody understands the concept of procrastination. At the moment this word is mentioned, the first thing that springs to mind is laziness. The reluctance to act is not about idleness. Being lazy is not the determining factor behind delaying tasks. It is a cocktail of causes. Have you considered that postponing your tasks is simply because they are not what you really want to do or that the environment is playing against yourself? In recent years, studies have shown that task aversion is based on the stage of the project. For example, in the early stages, aversion is generally due to a lack of personal meaning. In the action phase, procrastination is often an absence of structure.

Last Thursday, a new report from the World Health Organisation emerged – how the coronavirus pandemic began? A team of 27 international scientists, convened by the WHO and tasked with understanding how Covid spread worldwide, released this report stating that all hypotheses remain on the table, including that of a laboratory leak. All available data suggest the virus jumped from animals to humans. Nevertheless, some gaps in the figures make difficult to understand the real roots of the pandemic. The team called Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) was formed last year with the purpose of finding new ways of study to learn the pandemic’s origins and, at the same time, the emergence of future infections.
Imagine what you would do if you were not afraid. How many times have you disappointed yourself by surrendering to your fears rather than taking actions? Many people face this, and it might create some sort of depression or regret. What you need is courage, and the good news is you can cultivate it. How do people cope with distressing emotions? Essentially, in two ways: through reasoning or through suppression. Such methods treat emotions as states that must be overcome, but the truth is that none of them neither develop courage nor freeing from the grip of the maladaptive ones. If neither reasoning nor suppressing work whatsoever, what is the alternative? Emotional labelling. By labelling your emotions, you recognise their existence. When you’re touched by a strong emotion, label it forthwith. Accept its presence and then move forward, regardless of how uncomfortable you might feel. The more you do it, the less frequent those feelings will arise. Mark Twain said: “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear.” Fear is a reaction; courage is a decision.

Although some materials can be effectively recycled, plastic cannot. And here’s why. The problem with recycling plastic lies not with the concept or process, but with the material itself. There are thousands of different plastics; each of them with its own composition and characteristics. Apart from that, it includes numerous chemical additives and colourants that cannot be recycled together, therefore, making impossible the selection of trillions of pieces into separate types for processing. Buying just one fast-food meal involves many types of single-use plastic, including PET#1, HDPE#2, LDPE#4, PP#5, and PS#6 cups, lids, clamshells, trays, bags, and cutlery – none of them should be blended simultaneously.
Huawei and ZTE, two of China’s biggest telecoms equipment makers will be out from working on Canada’s 5G phone networks. The move was announced by the country’s industry minister last Thursday. The minister said that this action is aimed at protecting the safety and security of Canadians while improving the country’s mobile internet services. “This is the right decision,” he told reporters. This action means that Canadian firms will no longer be allowed to use equipment made by Huawei and ZTE and those which have already installed them, now must remove them.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, the giant pharmaceutical Pfizer announced the “Accord for a Healthier World”, which is basically to offer vaccines and patent-protected medicines on a not-for-profit basis to low-income countries. The New York-based company also stated that other pharma firms want to take similar steps. In theory, 45 poor countries will benefit from this announcement, meaning that over 1.2 billion people in places such as Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Ghana will have access to these drugs produced by the firm.
A conscious human life is not meant to be based simply on reactions or responding to whims, just like plants or animals which react to temporary external stimulus. If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done. To get that, deliberately dare yourself. Through challenge, you propel yourself forward, and by intentionally taking risks, you ensure your personal growth. Nothing is worthwhile unless you take risks. No passion is found by having a life that is significantly less than the one you can live. To some extent, what is hindering you from accepting risks and achieving your goals is the fear of failure, along with the fear of judgement. Doing what scares you the most leads to success. God places the best things of life out of your comfort zone. If you fall, rise again and again. Nevertheless, every time you stand up, you have an advantage: fresh knowledge coupled with experience. Turn it into your favour. Take the risk.

Who is winning this war? Not Russia, of course not Ukraine. The military industrial complex. It is the defence companies and military contractors who are winning this war, the players who don’t want wars to cease. A handful of big players controls the international arms marketplace. From 2016 to 2020, the United States, Russia, France, China, the United Kingdom, and Germany, exported 80% of the world’s weapons. Except for China, every country on this list is directly involved in the Ukraine conflict. Russia is the aggressor, the US, the UK, France, and Germany, are all arming Ukraine. Out of these six countries, five are permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Which is ironic, given that this organ of the UN has the responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Even though an attack against the sovereignty of a state should be censured by all the nations worldwide, several major countries chose not to criticise Russia. Amongst them are China, India, Pakistan, and South Africa. India and Pakistan receive a good number of their weapons from Moscow. Other countries, for instance, in the Middle East, have accused NATO of hypocrisy. As it happened in 2003 when the United States invaded Iraq. The US and the UK bypassed the United Nations, attacked and occupied Iraq, leading to years of violence and instability in the region. Syria, for obvious reasons, supports Vladimir Putin. Russia helped President Bashar al-Assad stop the advance of ISIS combatants back in 2015. United Arab Emirates’s ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, enjoys an excellent relationship with Putin. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has a good rapport with the Kremlin as well, which as opposed to NATO and the United States, did not accuse the Saudi crown of ordering the gruesome murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
According to new estimates from the World Health Organisation, around 14.9 million people round the world died of Covid-19 between 1st January 2020 and 31st December 2021. This figure is about three times higher than officially reported. The official death toll was 5.4 million, meaning an excess in mortality of 9.5 million.
Russia is with no doubt responsible for the deaths, and massacre, and refugees arriving from Ukraine looking for shelter. Also, Putin is accountable for the most horrifying war in Europe since WWII. But what led Russia to invade Ukraine in the first place?
When Russia invaded Ukraine, sanctions and military aid was the discourse of the Americans plus the persistent bellicose speech. What happens to peace talks? Why not find a way to stop the suffering and misery of the Ukrainian population? Is it the intention just to weaken Russia no matter what? Or is it just to profit from weapons?
Most people have two lives: the one they live and the unlived one inside them – which is teemed with wishes and desires. A strong force that normally is dragging you down to the abyss and hindering you from keeping afloat stands between the life you have and the one you yearn for: this force is the toxic and powerful Resistance. To shrewdly overcome resistance, you’ve got to understand it. A reason this opposing force is hard to combat is in part because of its capacity to disguise itself.
Elon Musk has reached an agreement to buy Twitter, giving him control of the influential social network with more than 200 million users. From now on, Musk will be in charge of the company he’s been criticising for not living up to its potential as a platform for ‘free speech’.
Do you think that Twitter should lift the ban on those who have been removed from this platform?
Anyone entering the UK illegally, as well as those who have arrived illegally since 1st January, may now be relocated to Rwanda. Priti Patel, Home Secretary, travelled to Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, to sign the agreement. The reason for this innovative approach, as Johnson explained, was to save countless lives from human trafficking, and to disrupt the business model of the gangs. Apparently, this action might stop ‘people smugglers’ from turning the ocean into a ‘water graveyard’, and to deter migrants from arriving the Kent coast illegally. Rwanda’s government says migrants will be under its protection, while giving access to employment, healthcare, and social services.
A record number of Americans have quit their jobs in the last 12 months – around 50 million. Meaning that roughly 4 million every month have either given up or changed their positions. Why do you think this is happening? Well, dissatisfaction with working conditions plus uninspiring jobs, not to mention low salaries, no opportunities for growing, and the cherry on top, terrible bosses. These reasons have made employees explore different career prospects, or create their own businesses or services. Something to look at is the situation that healthcare workers lived and, in some countries, are still living with the pandemic and Covid. Nurses and doctors are exhausted at unsustainable levels. This ended up in a shortage of healthcare workers.
I recently read an analysis on CNN about the rise in populism in the United States and Europe. If people disagree with their current government and its policies, and someone raises their voice against it, why should this person be stigmatised as populist or radical? Journalists should be on the side of the ordinary population and at the same time inquire and question authorities, not being blatantly on their side. If journalists report only one political side, then they are not different from any other tyrant.
Actors develop certain abilities when they work on a film production: Public speaking, memorisation, spontaneity, teamwork, vocal presence, and communication.
Some of the aforementioned abilities are strongly related to the business world. Speaking in public, giving presentations, holding conferences, motivating workforce and increasing morale, dealing with clients, and having sales meetings.
By depicting a character, playing a role, you can overcome your fears and learn a new set of skills, allowing extra room for creativity.
Get a grip – It is Show Time.
You will do fine by just pretending – for yourself - you are an actor performing a character.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a superpower? An extraordinary ability to summon when you need a booster, an extra life, or even a sword to slay imaginary dragons. You can create your own superhero to cope with situations disturbing you. In this way, not only developing your strength but also boosting your confidence. Celebrities, politicians, businessmen use alter egos to project a different image to the public, in addition to safeguard their own private lives. Ask yourself: Why do I want an Alter Ego? What do I need to improve?
“The worst enemy you can meet will always be yourself; you lie in wait for yourself in caves and forests.” Nietzsche. You think about a project, an alternative career path, a fresh start, but shortly after you dismiss the idea as you are afraid of the reactions and opinions of those surrounding you. What is holding you back?
It is a fact that if you want to change your life, you have got to start by transforming the way you think and conduct yourself. Everything boils down to your thoughts. What you think you become. If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. Stand up and get what you wish. The price of victory is high, but so are the rewards.
A wise person is beyond fear and, as a result, is truly free. As long as you fear, you are a prisoner. How can you clean up your mind from fear once and for all? Through understanding. Fear thrives on ignorance.

The World Health Organisation has revealed that a new coronavirus was discovered by Chinese scientists and may pose a threat to humans in the future. Researchers from Wuhan, China, where Covid-19 was first spotted in 2019, found this new virus amongst bats in South Africa. At the same time, they warned of its high death and transmission rate. According to experts, the NeoCoV virus is not new. It is associated with the MERS-CoV virus, in outbreaks in Middle Eastern countries in 2012 and 2015, and is similar to SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19 in humans. Coronaviruses are a wide range of viruses that can cause a variety of diseases, ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, SARS.
Going to the cinema, what are the chances to get Covid after that? What about the gym, unmasked? Or in our neighbourhood park? We know, and been told, that certain places and activities expose ourselves to coronavirus. A new study breaks down much of the guesswork and offers clear estimates about it, analysing past outbreaks, superspreader events as well as factors that could hinder the virus’ dissemination. It used a mathematical model which considers propagation factors however, it is not a perfect estimate, but it can help to answer some questions.
A recent study from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention shows that vaccination is the safest way to be protected. All data collected for such study was gathered before the Omicron wave took over America, and even before boosters. Researchers from the CDC stated that vaccines remain as the safest strategy for averting future Covid infections, hospitalisations, long-term sequelae, and death, despite the emergence of new variants. The analysis comprised four groups of individuals: vaccinated with and without prior infection and unvaccinated with and without prior infection.
A team of scientists led by Drs Peter Hotez and Maria Bottazzi from the Texas Children’s Hospital Centre for Vaccine Development at Baylor College of Medicine has been developing vaccine prototypes for SARS and Mers since 2011. They reconstructed these vaccines to create the new Covid jab dubbed Corbevax, or “the world’s Covid-19 vaccine. This new vaccine is using a decade-old conventional method which would make the production and distribution cheaper and more accessible for those countries most affected by the pandemic and, of course, where other variants are likely to originate due to low inoculation rates. The difference between this vaccine and others in the market is that their creators do not intend to patent it, making it available to anybody with the capacity to make it.
With a languid world bereft of vaccines, England throws away Covid doses to the rubbish. A memo from the NHS reveals the reason: “lack of demand.” Those about-to-be-thrown vaccines were part of the booster campaign launched in December, but most of them will reach the expiry date in the next couple of weeks.
Beijing, capital city of China, has reported its first Omicron case, as informed by local media on Saturday. This is really happening there, despite the bubble and the moat authorities had put surrounding the city. Beijing Olympic Winter Games are just three weeks ahead, for that health authorities had been implementing a series of extreme measures to curb the spread of Covid in the hope to contain the virus from reaching the capital city.
Quebec has announced plans to impose a “health tax” on residents who refuse to get the Covid vaccine for non-medical reasons. This move comes amid a new wave of infections fuelled by Omicron, overwhelming the province’s health system. Premier Francois Legault announced the new “contribution” on Tuesday 11th of January and it will be charged to all adults who do not want to get vaccinated. He said those who refuse to get the shot, bring a financial burden to hospital staff and Quebecers.
The US Food and Drug Administration Acting Commissioner Dr Janet Woodcock said on Tuesday the situation right now is that most people are going to get Covid, so the focus must be on making sure hospitals and essential services function.
Data from US Department of Health and Human Services reveals that over 145,000 people are currently hospitalised in the United States because of Covid, making it a new record high, surpassing the previous peak from January 2021. Currently, 24,000 intensive care unit beds are in use for Covid-19 patients. About twice than a couple of weeks ago. Over the summer, during the Delta surge, hospitalisations peaked at about 104,000. But not only for adults have increased, also pediatric hospitalisations have far exceeded previous peaks, with nearly 5,000 children in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid.
The forecast is that more than half of Europeans in the next six to eight weeks could be infected with Omicron. Dr Hans Kluge, the World Health Organisation regional director for Europe, told a virtual news conference that Europe and Central Asia are still under intense pressure from Covid in 2022. He also urged nations to reinforce the use of masks to prevent more cases, as the Omicron variant is highly contagious.
Five million more are into lockdown in Anyang, China, as the Winter Olympics gets closer. China continues to battle outbrakes across several provinces, confining millions of people, forcing them to be at home for later testing. The country’s national health commission reported 110 new locally transmitted instances, including 87 in Henan province, 13 in Shaanxi, and 10 in Tianjin. The number of cases in Henan, some Omicron, led to the confinement of five million residents in the city of Anyang, prompting the lockdown on Monday evening.
Winter Olympics are just a few weeks ahead, and China is doing whatever it takes to control and battle the Omicron variant outbreak in some of its cities. And it seems to take any measure to avoid the virus to get to Beijing, the capital, by the time the event starts. Health authorities have reported several cases of Omicron in recent days, shutting entire cities down such as Yuzhou, Tianjin, and Xi’an. On Monday, authorities recorded 97 new cases across several cities. At least 30 in Henan province, while 21 in Tianjin, including 15 children. This is the “first real battle against Omicron”, as state media have described the outbreak.
This Sunday 9th of January, authorities in Tianjin, a major Chinese port city near Beijing, launched a mass-testing programme to its 14 million residents after 20 children and adults tested positive for Covid, including at least two with Omicron.
More than 150,000 people have died in the UK from Covid since the pandemic started, as revealed by government figures, making the country part of seven in the world to have passed this figure along with the United States, Brazil, India, Russia, Mexico, and Peru.
The World Health Organisation has warned against calling the Omicron variant as mild as it is killing people. Evidence shows that Omicron is less likely to make patients seriously ill compared with previous variants, but it doesn’t mean a person cannot die of it. The record numbers, the tsunami of cases, are leaving health systems under strain, the WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated. Last week, global caseload rose by 71%, and in the Americas by 100%. The unvaccinated account for 90% of serious cases.
Protection against hospitalisations remains at around 90% for people aged 65 and over even three months after boosting, according to data from the UK Health Security Agency. So, UK experts consider a fourth Covid jab unnecessary, yet. This happens with severe disease. With mild infection it is shorter, dropping around 30% by about 90 days. The agency also said that with two vaccine doses, protection against serious illness decreases to 70% after three months, and to 50% after six. Hence the importance of the booster shot. So far, over 35 million boosters have been administered in the UK.
Those unvaccinated in Citigroup will have a deadline till 14th of January to get a vaccine. If they refuse, they will be placed on unpaid leave and fired at the end of the month, unless they are granted an exemption. Citigroup becomes the first major Wall Street institution to have a strict vaccine mandate, following the policy of US President Joe Biden requiring all workers supporting government contracts to be fully vaccinated.
In the first days of the new year, Israel reported two young pregnant women who had tested positive for both coronavirus and influenza – flurona, as some media nicknamed it. Flurona refers to when one person has both respiratory infections at the same time, which health officials claim it is a possibility as the highly contagious Omicron is spreading across the world. Doctors round the world have been concerned about a potential impact of a “twindemic”, with the influenza caseload going up, and Covid threatening to swamp hospitals. That is why the importance of getting immunised.
In Italy, people aged 50 or more, will have to be vaccinated against Covid, as an effort to ease pressure on hospitals and reduce deaths, amid a surge in infections. Vaccine rules are also hardened in public and private workplaces, where people will have to present a health pass proving immunisation or recovery from Covid. Italy registered almost 190,000 cases of coronavirus last Wednesday, with 231 fatalities, bringing the death toll to 138,276, the highest in Europe after the UK. Italian health minister declared that over 66% of patients in intensive care were unvaccinated, prompting the government to implement this new measure. As noted by health authorities, the unvaccinated are causing a heavy burden in the hospital system. The point is to restrict them as much as possible.
French National Assembly approved the government’s controversial vaccine pass, following Emmanuel Macron’s pledge to “piss off” the unvaccinated. Those without jabs will be denied entry to restaurants, theatres, sport, and cultural venues. The legislation was approved by a large majority in the Assemblée Nationale early this Thursday, with 214 in favour, 93 against, and 27 abstentions. Now it’s the turn of the Senate which will debate it next Monday.
French President Emmanuel Macron has prompted a commotion after saying that his administration’s vaccination strategy is to “piss off” those who haven’t had a Covid vaccine, which according to him is making daily life more and more difficult for everybody. Macron stated that this is not about pissing off the French people, but the unvaccinated.
He said that he really wants to piss them off and will continue to do so. “This is the strategy,” he added. The French parliament is debating a new legislation that, if approved, will mean only the fully vaccinated will qualify for a health pass next month – no longer those with a negative Covid test.
A third wave of infections is hitting India’s largest cities, with Delhi and Mumbai witnessing a surge in Covid cases. On Tuesday, the country reported more than 37,000 cases of coronavirus, a fivefold increase in a week, fuelled by the Omicron variant. In the wake of this increase, Delhi and Mumbai have brought back curfews along with other restrictions to stem the spread of the virus. Last year in April and May, during the second wave, India recorded about 400,000 daily cases at the peak of the crisis. Authorities fear that a surge in Omicron cases could overwhelm India’s health system, as it happened last year, leaving patients gasping for breath due to the lack of life-saving oxygen, and a shortage of beds.
Dr Anthony Fauci, US Chief Medical Advisor said that since many of the infections are causing few or no symptoms, it is much more relevant to focus on the hospitalisations, as opposed to the total number of cases.
Daily Covid cases in the UK have hit another record high, with 218,724 reported in the last 24 hours. This brings over 1.2 million infections in the last 7 days – a 51% higher on the week before. Although it’s a high number, the real figure is estimated to be substantially higher since not all the cases are reported to the authorities.
Just three asymptomatic cases was what Chinese authorities needed to lockdown a city of almost 1.2 million people in Yuzhou on Monday. In total, over 13 million others are confined, together with Xi’an, where authorities have requested even more severe restrictions. The capital city Beijing is holding on its zero-Covid strategy, in light of the forthcoming Winter Olympics next month, as authorities prompted strict responses over outbreaks. In Yuzhou, in the Henan province, the lockdown is aimed to keep residents inside their homes, and in residential communities to post guards at their gates.
Israel is launching its fourth Covid vaccination campaign, with over 60 and healthcare workers the first to receive the additional shot. This move is aimed at stemming the rapid rising in infections caused by the Omicron variant. People who took the booster shot more than four months ago are eligible for the second booster of Pfizer jab, such as the elderly, frontline workers and those with compromised immune systems. Health authorities said that preliminary findings of a study found that a fourth dose boosted antibodies fivefold after a week.
A deluge of one million new Covid cases hit the United States last Monday 3rd of January, as reported by Johns Hopkins University. A large number of the new infections were driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant. Evidence suggests that Omicron is generally milder than Delta, less lethal, nevertheless the sheer volume of new cases follows an increase in hospitalisations, threatening the already overwhelmed health care system. Although this is an astronomical figure, experts say that this could be underestimated as many people test themselves at home and many of those results are not shared with the authorities. In a number of cases the tests are not accurate. But the main point here is that this new variant could be particularly harmful to children since paediatric admissions have reached record highs in recent days. The US government hasn’t inoculated children in force, as with other age groups, making them vulnerable to the disease.
Is there anything we can expect from 2022? From my view the answer is “nothing”. You cannot expect anything from 2022 simply because this new year doesn’t have the ability to bring you anything. It’s not possible. Let’s stop believing in this kind of things. The only one who can do something better, to bring something to you is “yourself”. Most of us usually don’t achieve our goals for two main reasons: overthinking and procrastination, which are led by fear. So when we believe that a new year, will bring us something better it seems we are relying on something or someone to reach our goals for us. Again, we are the only ones who can achieve our goals.
From the 10th of January, the United Arab Emirates will ban citizens who haven’t had three doses of an anti-Covid vaccine from travelling abroad. The UAE is the latest country to announce new curbs amid a rise in infections. More than 90% of the population are fully vaccinated against Covid there, with 34% boosted as of 24 of December, according to Our World in Data. Recent studies have shown that a booster shot offers better protection against the heavily mutated variant Omicron, which has been spreading rapidly round the world in the latest weeks.
Due to a rapid increase in Covid cases fuelled by the Omicron variant, the French government has slashed isolation times for vaccinated people but increasing isolation for the unvaccinated from public venues. This move is aimed at easing the financial and social burden of the recent outbreak. For the fully vaccinated, the self-isolation times, if tested positive, will drop from 10 days to seven, and can be cut down to five with a negative test result. The French health minister said that unvaccinated people have to isolate themselves for ten days, with a possible exit after seven days under the same conditions.
Evidence indicates that the Omicron variant is more likely to infect the throat than the lungs, which is why scientists believe it appears to be more infectious but less deadly than other strains of the virus. Six different studies have found that this strain doesn’t damage people’s lungs as much as Delta. Apparently, the result of the mutations in Omicron may have altered its ability to affect other sorts of cells. In essence, it looks to be more able to infect the upper respiratory tract – cells in the throat.
US health authorities have said teens and younger adults are fuelling the record numbers of daily coronavirus caseload, driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant. The uptick in Covid in the under-50s coincides with a surge in cases amongst young children, increasing and troubling paediatric hospitalisations. In America, less than 25% of children are vaccinated. There has been an upsurge in hospitalisations in the United States - for all age groups it was of 19% nationwide.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, has said Americans should avoid cruises regardless of their vaccination status. This is due to concerns over Omicron spread. The CDC stated that the virus can quickly spread in the confined spaces of a ship, and that the likelihood of infections is high.
Even fully vaccinated passengers who have received a booster shot can spread the virus while onboard. The recommendation also includes testing between one and three days prior to the voyage, and three to five days after, irrespective of vaccination status. Equally important, is to self-isolate for a week for those unvaccinated.
Despite rising numbers in the UK, the Health Secretary Sajid Javid said, that further restrictions in England must be an “absolute last resort”. Javid added, the UK must look to live alongside coronavirus in 2022. According to the minister, the number of people in intensive care was not following the same trajectory as this time last year, but also warned that there would be an enormous increase in people needing NHS care in the next month.
A South African statement said that the Omicron variant, while high transmissible, had seen lower hospitalisation rates than previous waves. The African country has lifted overnight curfew rules, with officials saying that they may have passed the peak of the Covid’s fourth wave of infections. Regarding the number of deaths, there had been a marginal increase, the statement added.
The World Health Organisation chief says he is optimistic that the pandemic will be defeated in 2022, provided that countries work together to contain its spread. He also warned against narrow nationalism and vaccine hoarding as important factors to reach that goal.
Despite Covid has recently shut borders, split families, and have people wear masks regularly, the WHO chief sounded positive in his message, adding that now the world has more tools to treat the infection.
According to the WHO director, vaccine hoarding and narrow nationalism, created the ideal conditions for the emergence of Omicron, and the longer inequity goes on, the higher the risks of the virus spreading in ways we can’t prevent or predict.
The head of the World Health Organisation has sent a message about beating the pandemic in 2022. In his New Year’s Eve message, the Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the world has the tools to end this calamity, despite the fact that daily new Covid cases worldwide reached new records. The message also came with a warning: “The longer inequity continues, the longer the pandemic will persist.” After two years in pandemic, the tools available remain unevenly distributed round the world.
A startling 525,000 cases, were reported Wednesday in the United States, but that figure could be an undercount of the true number. This number marks a new record of infections in the country, with Omicron being the culprit of this surge in cases. Experts believe that this figure is low since many are asymptomatic. The average in the US is now estimated in 300,000 per day. Dr James Phillips, chief of disaster medicine at George Washington University said, that it was unlike anything they’ve ever seen before, even at the peak of the prior surges of Covid.
France has registered a national and European record for new coronavirus infections - 208,000 - fuelled by the Omicron variant. The country reported the cases in the last 24 hours, up from its previous record of almost 180,000 set the day before. The United Kingdom reported 183,000 new cases, Spain 100,000, and Italy over 98,000. Portugal, Denmark, and Greece have all informed about new case records this week. On the other side of the Atlantic, the United States registered 438,000 new cases of coronavirus, becoming the country with the highest infection rate so far. With this new figure, the average daily cases hits a high of 260,000, with Omicron accounting for 59% of these. The World Health Organisation Director General said it is worrying that Delta and Omicron are spreading at the same time, leading to a tidal wave of infections.
Several European countries and the US have reported record high Covid cases, as the Omicron variant continues to surge. The US, France, the UK, Spain and Italy are the countries with the highest number of infections in one day. In Europe, France documented almost 180,000 cases, the UK nearly 130,000, Spain close to 100,000 cases, and Italy about 80,000. The United States registered over 309,000 cases of coronavirus. All of this in a 24-hour period. Portugal also reported record-high daily coronavirus caseload, despite having one of the world’s highest vaccination rates. In Greece, authorities announced a new daily report of more than 21,000 cases, more than twice the level on Monday.
A panel of experts in Israel has recommended a fourth dose of a Covid vaccine, namely Pfizer, for all over 60, healthcare workers, and those with compromised immunity at least four months after their third jab.
The Chilean government will offer a fourth coronavirus vaccine from February, starting with health workers, elderly people and those with chronic diseases.
Boris Johnson will not introduce fresh Covid measures for New Year’s Eve, putting emphasis on personal responsibility. This is some sort of bet. Mass events will go ahead and nightclubs remain open, contrasting with other UK nations.
Of course, scientists who say that England has recorded its highest numbers of Covid infections criticised him, adding it was the greatest divergency between scientific advice and legislation since the start of the pandemic.
Due to the advance of Omicron, both public and private spaces are at the reach of the new hardened controls in Germany, even restricting the size of indoor and outdoor gatherings. Leisure facilities, from gyms to swimming pools, nightclubs and cinemas are closing in several states. This move is aimed to slow down a wave of coronavirus infections triggered by the Omicron variant, the new strain taking hold in the country.
Last Saturday, France recorded more than 100,000 new infections – the highest number since the pandemic began. This prompted the French government to implement tighter restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.
One of them is to make remote working compulsory from 3 January for those whose jobs allow it. Also, public gatherings will be limited to 2,000 people for indoor events.
Coronavirus infections are doubling every two days, a mega wave of new cases, according to the health minister.
Other measures include a ban on eating and drinking on long distance transport, nightclubs closed, and cafes and bars will only provide table service only.
Some European countries are tightening restrictions to tackle the new Covid variant Omicron. They based these restrictions on a constant stream of information coming every day, but what is the real deal?
Compared to Christmas 2020, we are in a much brighter place. Back then, we had the rise of the Alpha variant, plus the vaccination programme was in its diapers.
Omicron is in charge now. It replaced Delta as the dominant variant since it is more contagious and seems to evade the immune system more effectively, albeit less severe.
Most of the reduced severity is down to immunity as a result of vaccination or previous bouts of Covid, a previous infection if you will.
The symptoms are similar to those of a cold - sore throat, runny nose, and headache.
But all of this doesn’t mean that Omicron will be mild for everyone – some will still be severely ill.
Omicron spreads very fast, way faster than Delta and other variants. And the situation here is hospital capacity.
The European Centre for Disease Control said that Christmas get-togethers may need to be downsized, as Omicron is very likely to increase the death toll in Europe – even if it proves to be less severe. Less severe doesn’t mean ‘not deadly’. Omicron is more transmissible than Delta by far, meaning more people are forecast to be admitted to hospital or killed this winter – even more than previously projected. The health agency advises governments to reintroduce Covid restrictions, with one of them being to recommend families and friends to avoid mixing over the festive season. The director of the ECDC Dr Andrea Ammon said that the probability of further spread of the Omicron variant in the European Union is very high, increasing hospitalisations and fatalities – higher than expected from earlier forecasts considering only the Delta variant.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention CDC has warned that a wave of Omicron is surging in America and could peak as early as January, hence some states are preparing for overloaded hospitals. A week before, Omicron cases accounted for 0.3% of Covid cases. As of Saturday, it raises to 3%. Just one week later. The spread of Omicron is alarming, and it’s expected to continue rising rapidly, based on experiences of other countries, and might become the dominant strain within weeks. In the next couple of months, health officials anticipate an increase in hospitalisations, deaths, and in the burden on the health care system.
The World Health Organisation chief said that the variant has been detected in 77 countries, however, it’s probably present in most countries, even if it hasn’t been detected yet.
Denmark and Norway have announced the implementation of new Covid measures to battle soaring infection numbers – the new Omicron variant is spreading fast and perhaps would become the dominant variant in several European countries within weeks or days. Both governments said they expect daily infections would soon exceed all previous records as the highly transmissible Omicron is combined with the wave still driven by Delta.
In the UK, scientists have discovered that the booster shot, the third vaccine, prevents around 75% of people getting any Covid symptoms. With a booster shot, the protection you're left with after the third dose is bigger and more memorable than you had before. Fighting coronavirus is something your immune system has to learn. Vaccines are more like a school. With every dose of the vaccine, another round of antibodies is triggered within the immune system. It seeks out better antibodies that attach themselves more firmly to the virus. And it's not just about the quality of antibodies, the quantity goes up with an extra dose of the vaccine too. On top of that, boosting is giving our bodies the upper hand against future variants too.
The plan of the Austrian government is to fine those who don’t want to get the Covid-19 vaccine. Fines could reach $4,000 for people 14 and above every month once the vaccine mandate gets the green light. The vaccine mandate, which must be approved by parliament, is due to start on 1 February and last through January 2024. There's a great chance to approve it as two opposition parties are supporting it, so it could pass easily. This move would make Austria the first European country to do so.
In theory, future pandemics could be more lethal than Covid-19. All the lessons we are learning about the current pandemic must not be lost and the world and health organisms must ensure everybody is prepared for the next viral onslaught.
The UK drugs watchdog approved a new treatment for Covid: Xevudy. This new monoclonal antibody is produced by GlaxoSmithKline. In clinical trials, Xevudy cut risk of hospitalisation and death by 79%.
Europe is again the epicentre of the pandemic. Last Thursday, German authorities announced a nationwide lockdown for the unvaccinated, banning them from accessing everything but the most essentials such as supermarkets and pharmacies. This move is intended to stop the spread of the coronavirus which has wreaked havoc in the last few weeks in Germany.
There is a great possibility to witness new Covid variants. More will emerge as wealthy nations continue hoarding vaccines. Rich countries have stockpiled the global vaccine supply and, according to the World Health Organisation, it has enabled the emergence of Omicron – considered more transmissible than Delta. Some nations have even binned vaccines rather than donate them.
Omicron was first identified in Africa, the continent with the least vaccination rate in the world. It is not a coincidence. The WHO had been saying that the more time the virus is circulating, chances are new variants appear, potentially vaccine-resistant or with more transmissibility. New variants are a natural consequence of being too slow to vaccinate the world. Omicron is a proof of that.
This variant was initially referred to as B.1.1.529, but last Friday the World Health Organisation designated it as a variant of concern naming the strain Omicron. It is of concern because of its mutations and evidence indicates an increased risk of reinfection. The name Omicron – a Greek letter – was assigned to avoid stigmas and any association with the place where it was first located.
The new Covid-19 variant Omicron has been detected in several countries round the world, prompting measures such as travel restrictions and mask mandates. In some countries, these measures are quite strict. This new strain, first discovered in South Africa, is now present in the UK, in the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Botswana, Germany, the Czech Republic, Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, and Italy. Since this new strain has over 30 mutations in its spike protein, it’s believed to be vaccine-resistant and prolong the almost two-year pandemic. Experts do not know yet if it will cause more of less severe Covid-19.
The UK Health Secretary confirmed this Saturday they have identified two cases of the new Covid-19 variant Omicron. Authorities mentioned that the individuals who have tested positive, as well as all members of their households, are being re-tested and have been told to self-isolate. In The Netherlands, sixty-one people who arrived in Amsterdam on two flights from South Africa have tested positive for Covid-19, Dutch officials say. Omicron variant has probably arrived in Germany after mutations were found in a passenger from South Africa. Last Friday New York governor Kathy Hochul said that while the Omicron variant hasn’t been detected in the state, it is coming. New York is taking measures to limit a new winter wave of infections.
A new Covid-19 variant was discovered in South Africa and is spreading rapidly in parts of the country. South Africa’s Health Minister announced last Thursday the discovery of the new coronavirus strain – B.1.1.529. It’s unclear where it first emerged. So far, it has been detected in South Africa, Botswana and in a traveller to Hong Kong from South Africa. Genomic scientists said the variant has an unusual high number of mutations, with more than 30 in the spike protein, the structure the virus uses to get into the cells.
Treatments to tackle the pandemic, which has killed over five million people worldwide, have until now focused mainly on vaccines. Pharmaceuticals have conducted research to create other weapons to combat Covid and finally, after months of studies and clinical trials, Merck and Pfizer have found their golden ticket: groundbreaking antiviral pills against the disease. Merck hit first with Molnupiravir in October and Pfizer had the second hit in early November with its anti-Covid pill, Paxlovid.
Europe is battling with a fresh wave of infections, making Covid-19 once again the number one cause of mortality in the region. Several nations have reported record-high infections, prompting states to introduce full and partial lockdowns.
With more than 65,000 new cases within the last 24 hours, Germany has recorded its highest single day surge of Covid infections. Chancellor Angela Merkel said the dramatic situation resulted from the fourth wave hitting the country with full force. The Robert Koch Institute, which is Germany’s disease and control centre, reported the alarming figures. But the chief of the centre mentioned that those figures are likely to be under reported and the true scale of infections could be twice or three times as many.
Covid-19 is now a pandemic of poor nations, as asserted by Dr David Nabarro, a World Health Organisation special envoy. The leading global expert has told to a cross-party group of MPs in the UK. Dr Nabarro added the world is still deep in the pandemic and the disease, at the moment, is fundamentally of poor people and poor nations.
The Biden administration is planning to commit billions of dollars to build up vaccine manufacturing in the US to produce at least one billion doses each year. This is aimed to shore up global Covid-19 supply for poorer countries while also pre-empting future pandemics. As a public-private partnership, the government will employ knowledge from companies that already use mRNA technology to make vaccines.
Last Tuesday, the giant pharmaceutical Pfizer announced it signed an agreement to allow global access to its experimental Covid-19 pill, Paxlovid. The deal was made with the Medicines Patent Pool, a United Nations-backed health organisation, granting generic manufacturers to make the pill widely available in 95 low- and middle-income countries, reaching 53% of the world population.
The US Food and Drug Administration FDA approved this Friday Pfizer and Moderna vaccines as booster shots for all adults. This move expands the previous approval for elderly and those at high risk. Under this scenario, any adult who received a second dose of the vaccine at least six months earlier would be officially eligible to get a booster as soon as this weekend.
Even though 65% of the Austrian population is fully vaccinated against Covid, authorities announced a lockdown for those who are not. The Chancellor declared that this measure will come into effect next Monday 15 in an effort to deal with a surge in infections. The Austrian health minister said the action would initially last 10 days.
After a comprehensive study, Pfizer developed an antiviral pill against Covid, cutting the risk of death and hospitalisation by 89% in patients who were newly diagnosed with Covid-19.
Molnupiravir, the first antiviral treatment for Covid, has received the green light from the UK medicines regulator this week.
Last year, many countries were slow in placing orders to get the vaccines against Covid from Pfizer, Moderna or Astra-Zeneca. This, of course, caused a delay in their vaccination efforts. A sign of hope is on the horizon… an anti-Covid pill produced by Merck. The name of the pill – Molnupiravir.
The tablet hasn’t been authorised yet… Merck is seeking emergency authorisation from The Food and Drug Administration FDA.
Twenty-six scientists, from a wide range of scientific disciplines, will be involved in making a new global framework for emerging pathogens of epidemic and pandemic potential. The World Health Organisation has declared that this team of experts will, as well, reactivate the stalled inquiry into Covid-19 origins.
For over 20 years, the US ran hundreds of projects in Afghanistan through private contractors with little oversight. Many of them concluded successfully, but many didn’t.
The arrival of the Delta variant has shifted the course of the pandemic since it’s more transmissible than the previous variants and has become the dominant one across the world. New research from ZOE COVID Study shows that Delta has changed the symptoms of the infection.
This is an experimental drug, but the clinical trials were positive and suggest that it reduces the risk of hospitalisation by 50%.
The pill: “Molnupiravir”.
Amnesty International published a report saying that vaccine developers have monopolised intellectual property, blocked technology transfers, and lobbied aggressively against actions that would expand the global manufacturing of vaccines against Covid.
The 20-year war against ‘terror’ the US fought in Afghanistan has a new sombre chapter. Two days before the deadline for American troops to evacuate, and after a terrorist attack at Kabul airport perpetrated by ISIL-K, a US drone mistakenly killed 10 innocent people.
Natural immunity provides long-lasting and strong protection against Covid-19 but…which offers the best protection: a Covid infection or vaccines?
In Israel, scientists concluded that natural immunity offers longer-lasting and stronger protection against Covid compared with the immunity induced from the Pfizer two- dose vaccine. This is yet to be peer reviewed.
The Food and Drug Administration panel of advisers rejected Pfizer’s proposal to the widespread distribution of booster shots.
This influential panel of scientists agrees to administer vaccines for people over 65 and those with a significant risk of infection, but not for everybody. They claimed they are not needed for younger adults yet.
At this stage of the pandemic, vaccine booster shots are not needed for the general population.
This is according to a group of international scientists who published a new report in the medical journal The Lancet last Monday.
In the report, the scientists wrote that any decision about the need for boosting should be based on careful analysis of adequately controlled clinical or epidemiological data, or both, indicating a persistent and meaningful reduction in severe disease.
The United States’ dependence on for-profit contractors for war-zone duties contributed to mission failures in Afghanistan. This information was published in a paper from Brown’s University Costs of War project and the Centre for International Policy.
Last Saturday night, the FBI released a declassified 16-page document related to logistical support given to the Saudi plane hijackers on the run-up to September 11 attacks. Victims’ relatives applauded the document’s release as a meaningful step in their effort to connect the attacks to Saudi Arabia.
To defeat al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups was the promise made by George W. Bush right after the terrorist attacks on The World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon.
A few days after the attacks, Bush told the congress that the war on terror begins with al-Qaeda but wouldn’t end there.
Which goals were achieved?
Covid-19 cases are rising in the Americas as vaccination rates run slowly.
Almost double are the new Covid-19 infections compared with the same period last year according to the Pan American Health Organisation.
The organism director said only 28% of people in Latin America and The Caribbean are fully vaccinated - this is largely due to limited supplies of vaccines.
A request largely ignored: a pause for the cause in the administration of booster shots.
These vaccines can be used to inoculate millions of people in poor countries where its citizens are desperate to get at least one shot of a vaccine that could save their lives or their loved ones.
The World Health Organisation has included another version of the coronavirus to its list of “variants of interest”. Mu is the nickname given to the new variant.
B.1.621 was added in the list on 30 August after it was identified in 39 countries and found to possess a cluster of mutations that could make it less susceptible to the immune protection that many have gained through vaccination.
Less than 2 percent of Africa’s 1.3 billion people are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
Selfishness is compromising the vaccine rollout in Africa. Other countries are offering and applying booster shots, while the poor ones haven’t yet received a first shot.
The sound of the last US aeroplane leaving Afghanistan marked the conclusion of the longest, chaotic and, for many, the most humiliating war for America.
The United States has left Afghanistan after almost 20 years.
In May, President Joe Biden ordered US intelligence agencies to evaluate data and produce a report in 90 days that “could bring us to a definitive conclusion” on the origins of the virus. The report was presented last week as ‘inconclusive’. US intelligence cannot say if a laboratory accident caused the coronavirus pandemic, or it resulted from a natural spillover from animals to humans.
The United States attacked a planner from the Islamic State in Afghanistan just two days after the terrorist group claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in Kabul international airport. The US drone strike took place in the eastern city of Jalalabad and was aimed to a mid-planner of ISIL-K.
ISIL-K is an offshoot of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (identified as ISIS), which had been seeking to establish a new caliphate in Iraq and Syria.
It was formed in 2014 by separatists fighters of the Pakistan Taliban and combatants from Afghanistan who vowed allegiance to the late ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The Islamic State in Khorasan Province, also known as ISIL-K, has taken responsibility for the deadly suicide attacks outside Kabul international airport that killed at least 170 Afghans and 13 US soldiers, and leaving dozens injured.
The war in Afghanistan ended as it began, with a terrorist attack and with a president vowing to hunt down the criminals in Afghanistan.
Two suicide bombers and a gunman struck one of the main entrances to Kabul International airport killing at least 170 civilians and 13 US service members just hours after Western intelligence agencies warned of an imminent threat to the evacuation mission.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.
There are concerns over a terrorist attack from ISIS in Kabul airport.
Amid rising fears, the US, the UK and other countries are rushing to evacuate their nationals and vulnerable Afghans as fast as possible.
The US secretary of state Anthony Blinken has said the Taliban promised to allow foreigners and Afghans to leave Afghanistan beyond the deadline.
“The Taliban have made public and private commitments to provide a safe passage for Americans, for third-country nationals and at-risk afghans past 31 August.”
The lighting speed with which the Taliban gained territory and the Afghan army retired and ceded land shocked many.
How much has the Afghanistan conflict cost to America and its allies?
Was it worth all the resources, the lives, and the time spent in Afghanistan? And for what?
Images of a helicopter evacuating people from the American embassy in Kabul last Sunday flooded social media as the United States continues its withdrawal from the Afghan capital. For many it is a déjà vu and recalls the humiliating departure from Saigon, Vietnam, in 1975 when American personnel were climbing on a rooftop trying to escape.
The first case of Covid-19 in six months in New Zealand is the Delta variant as the genome sequence shows and it’s linked to the outbreak in neighbouring Australia, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a nationwide lockdown after the country confirmed one coronavirus case - the first locally transmitted since February.
