Thank you for helping us reach 250 episodes! To celebrate, we're finally diving into one of our most requested albums: Back to the Egg by Paul McCartney and Wings, released in 1979. Long overlooked and still awaiting a super deluxe reissue—alongside London Town—this record has become a fan favorite in recent years.

But is it a hidden gem or rightfully criticized? Does it deserve a reappraisal, and why hasn't it been re-released since its 1993 "remaster?" We explore all this and more, including a full track-by-track breakdown. As always, we wrap up with the latest Beatles news.

Here is Chris's "Scrambled Egg" song reordering of the album.

Check out Chris's recent interview appearance with Thomas Gouker and Brooke Halpin!

And Thomas speaking with Dave from a while back!

As usual, we discuss the lyrics, the context, the music, and cover versions. Which song do we like better? Which one works better in context on their respective albums? Are there any interesting cover versions of such personal songs?

We also catch you up on some more news (Recorded 4/19/25).

Apart from Yoko Ono, probably no other figure in the Beatles story is as divisive and hated as much as Allen Klein. Klein was brought into clean up the business disaster that was Apple, and to get a better contract and more money for the Beatles. After his work with Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, and others, the Beatles gave Klein a chance to improve their finances in 1969-70, with agreements that lasted for the next several years. In this episode, we dig into the background of Allen Klein, his rise to prominence, his work with The Rolling Stones, and of course shine an extensive light on his rise and fall with the Beatles as a group and as solo artists. Is he really the villain we've been led to believe he was? Or did he do some good things for the group? Listen and find out!

In this episode, we explore an early European gig the Beatles played in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 30, 1963. Their appearance on the TV show Drop In marked the final stop of their first Scandinavian tour. Unlike the frenzied crowds they would soon face, the audience was remarkably well-behaved, allowing the band’s performance to shine. The Beatles themselves seemed to be having a great time, and thanks to George’s faintly mic’d guitar, John’s rhythm playing comes through more clearly than ever. These performances highlight intricate musical details across the four songs they played. Watching the footage (link here) makes you wish there were more performances without screaming!

Jump into this episode where we do a fully-detailed analysis and deep dive of the 1978 movie Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band starring Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees, among numerous other guest stars of the day like George Burns and Steve Martin. Often deemed one of the worst films of all time, we talk about the absolutely idiotic plot, the terrible acting, some of the awful covers, a few of the good ones, what the movie did to the careers of the stars, and so much more. We leave no stone unturned in this analysis!

In this episode, we talk about the title song of Paul McCartney's 1983 album Pipes of Peace. In addition to our usual discussion of lyrics and music, we talk about the powerful video that accompanied the song starring two "Pauls" (a German and English one!). This was Paul's last #1 in Britain -- does it live up to that reputation all these years later? And as always, we get into the myriad cover versions as well. Here's a list:

For our last episode of 2024 (and released on the day the Beatles were officially disbanded 50 years ago!), Dave interviews Chip Madinger, co-author of Eight Arms to Hold You and Lennonology, about all the events in the Beatles world in 1974. They talk about John's "Lost Weekend," Walls and Bridges, Paul and Wings in their new incarnation, Ringo's album Goodnight Vienna, and George Harrison's North American tour and Dark Horse. In many ways, this was the last year when all four Beatles were really active.

In this episode, we talk about one of the songs featured on the Beatles' penultimate single as the B-side of "Let it Be" : "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)." Known as one of the group's quirkiest tunes, we talk about the production that took place over two different years, the music that works like a theme and variations, the ska section that was excised from the final version, and of course all the silly voices and sounds on the song. Oh, and a member of the Rolling Stones who played the sax solo too. Give it another listen if you haven't heard it in a while!

The Beatles: Live at the BBC was released in 1994. The album contained 50+ tracks from some of the 50+ programs the Beatles played on for the BBC during 1962-65. The album was a big hit, selling over 8 million copies, and it was a particular favorite for Dave and Chris who waited in line at a Best Buy in Champaign-Urbana, IL to buy it and get a free poster! We talk about the album, choose our top 10 songs from the album, choose some of the songs that didn't work very well (usually because of the sound quality), and much more. If you haven't pulled out the album in years, now would be a great time to do so! It was also remastered in 2013, so you could get that version as well.

This past week the Beatles released a short making-of documentary, song, and video of their completed version of John Lennon's song "Now and Then." Dave and Chris discuss the genesis of the song, the recording, the documentary, and the video–and don't always agree! What do you think of the song?

We also get into a discussion of the upcoming releases of 1962-66 and 1967-70, slated for next Friday, November 10.

Here's a link to the Variety article with Giles Martin discussed in the episode:

In this episode, Dave and Chris discuss the 2021 film The Beatles and India. This is a documentary that's just about what it says -- how the Beatles' connections to India began, developed, and ended. Along the way, you'll hear from pundits like Mark Lewisohn and Steve Turner, Patti Boyd, and many others who were in Rishikesh when the Beatles stayed there in 1968. We also discuss one of the most significant revelations the movie points out regarding why the Beatles left India. We think the movie is well worth a watch.

What would've happened if the Beatles reunited to make an album in 1973 based on the four albums recorded that year? We draw from Mind GamesBand on the RunLiving in the Material World, and Ringo to compile a 12-track album that we think would be even better if all four Beatles played and contributed to the songs. Chris and Dave both had different approaches to their album construction, but they both work well as listens. If only that had happened...

Dave's album: Band on the Run, Jet, Photograph, Out The Blue, Don't Let Me Wait Too Long, I'm The Greatest, Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth), Mind Games, Bluebird, Bring on the Lucie (Freeda People), Who Can See It, and 1985.

Chris's album: I'm the Greatest, Band on the Run, Sue You Sue Me Blues, Mind Games, Photograph, Let Me Roll It, One Day at a Time, Give Me Love, Bluebird, Be Here Now, I Know I Know, 1985

In an I've Got A Beatles Podcast first, we examine a song that wasn't written by a Beatle nor appeared on a Beatles or solo album -- but it features Paul McCartney prominently! In this episode, we discuss Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's duet "The Girl is Mine" from 1982's Thriller album. What do we think about the lyrics ("doggone girl??") and music? How did the song come about and what's going on at the end of the song? Are there any covers of the song? Check out the episode and let us know what you think.

In this episode, Dave and Chris kill two birds with one stone in this twofer episode combining a Beatle appearance in a film that happens to be a famous gig! What was the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus, held in 1968? What did John Lennon do at this event? Who were his bandmates? What other groups played at this event? How many of those groups were lip-synching? And why is Chris unhappy Allen Klein was involved?

Many people know about Richard Lester's 1967 movie How I Won The War that starred Michael Crawford (the future "Phantom of the Opera") and John Lennon, but most haven't seen it. It's most famous because of Lennon, of course.

In this episode, we go back into the lab and dissect George Harrison's song, "Any Road" from his posthumous 2002 album Brainwashed. How does the song stack up in George's catalog, what's interesting about the music and lyrics, and can Chris find any covers of note?

Let's go back to 1965 and the release of The Baroque Beatles Book, "arrangements" by composer/musicologist/performer Joshua Rifkin, casting music by the Beatles in the styles of J.S. Bach and G.F. Paul McCartney and Wings's first album Wild Life, released 50 years ago in 1971, was panned on its release for being rushed, for its subpar song quality, and the playing. How does it hold up 50 years later? Were the critics right? Listen in as we dissect the album and give it a rating.

Let's go into the lab for a Beatles cover, this time the 1964 #1 hit "A World Without Love" by Peter and Gordon. Paul McCartney gave this song to Peter Asher, the brother of his girlfriend at the time, Jane Asher. It has all the classic McCartneyisms, from the lyrics to the music. And of course, John Lennon didn't like the first lyric!

We dig into the music, lyrics, and Chris finds his usual array of covers. Enjoy!

Stuart played on Flowers in the Dirt and Off The Ground, the Unplugged show, and the two big world tours in 1989-90 and 1993. He also played with Ringo's All-Starr Band in 2006, 2008, and 2019.
