October was Pastor/Minister/Clergy Appreciation Month, a month started in America to highlight the work of those who spiritually lead (whatever their title), so for the last few weeks our episodes have taken a slightly different approach to normal. We have been sharing a 4-part series on what the Bible has to say about loving our leaders. We released the first three earlier last month, with this being the final episode.

Whilst this series may be most aimed at those who are led by others, we also hope it will be a help to leaders themselves as they think about how we encourage church cultures where people love their leaders well, and as we consider topics like how leaders should be appointed, supported and, if necessary, removed (part 2); what attitude we should have towards our leaders (part 3); and what right actions are towards leaders (this episode).

We also released the introduction to the series, thinking through the who, how and what of Christian leadership (part 1).

This is the final of three episodes as part of our early Advent series for busy ministers/church leaders.

Ministers generally begin to think about the true meaning of Christmas at least as early as decorations start festooning shops. They need to plan Christmas activities and prepare talks. Getting started is easier than normal service planning sermon prep – the dates are fixed and the texts are obvious. Bringing plans to completion can be harder. The planning phase comes at a busy time in church life, when programmes are in full swing and few others are thinking about Christmas, and an emotionally tough time for all of us, when days are shortening and temperatures are falling. The passages and carols can seem overly familiar and it is not easy to scrape away the cultural accretions of materialism and niceness to get to the reality of the incarnation.

So, as ministers prepare and plan to lead others in their appreciation of Christmas, we in Living Leadership want to help them enjoy its wonder and apply its significance to leadership.

In this episode, Jess gives an update on our summer plans and shares a prayer Paul Coulter has written which seeks to recapture the original meaning of the words we use for breaks from work and which echoes well-known words from Psalm 51:10-12. We invite you to make it part of your daily prayers during your summer break, however big or small.

Here it is:

Father, You are the giver of every good gift and I am your finite creation and beloved child. I receive the gift of days without work as a good gift from you. Free me from false guilt and help me to make the most of this time. May my ‘holiday’ be a sequence of holy days, encountering and enjoying you. In my ‘leave’, may I abandon burdens I was not made to carry and rejoice in you and your creation. In my ‘vacation’, help me to be unoccupied with work and its stresses. In my ‘break’, fracture the grip of unhealthy attitudes and patterns in my life. May my ‘days off’ be unhurried days of delight in those closest to me. Recreate in me a clean heart during this time. Refashion my rhythms in tune with your heart. Restore my joy in your salvation. Renew a right spirit in me that honours you in rest and in work. Refresh my love for you and others. May I live each day without work aware of your presence and alive by your Holy Spirit, Through Jesus Christ, my Lord, Amen.

We are delighted to share with you today the first episode of the new Nigel Lee Archive podcast.

You won’t find much written by Nigel Lee but his impact on the world of Christian ministry and missions in the latter half of the 20th century was enormous. He encouraged hundreds, perhaps thousands of people across the world into Christian work through Operation Mobilisation, UCCF and Myton Church in the UK.

Not only was Nigel a great evangelist and personal encourager of Christian workers, he was also known around the world for his incredibly accessible and powerful teaching and preaching of the Bible. It is that that we are now making available through the Nigel Lee Archive.

To give you a taster of what this podcast will include, we are delighted to make this first episode available in this main podcast feed. To hear more, search for the Nigel Lee Archive in your podcast app (see links below) or visit https://www.livingleadership.org/nigel-lee-archive

In this episode (recorded live at the Pastoral Refreshment Conference in 2009, a conference for Christian leaders), Andrew looks at the "Struggles of Discipleship".

Andrew considers the three mistakes disciples easily make (thinking "I am the greatest", "we are the only ones" or "sin doesn't matter"), and the three areas disciples should be different (attitude to marriage, children and possessions).

Andrew also tells us a bit about his experience of learning the book of Mark and The Mark Drama

This week we finish off our short series in the 5 Ms of Pastoral Care with an episode considering the Mechanics of Pastoral Care.

We begin to think how a contemporary community of believers can organise effective pastoral care, particularly looking at three key questions:

  • Who provides pastoral care (and at what levels)?
  • How is care accessed?
  • What are the limits of church-based pastoral care?

If you want to think about any of this further, we'd love to have you join our Gospel-shaped Pastoral Care Course. Find our more and book your place at www.livingleadership.org/pastoralcare
