We told you we were back! We dive into a topic that we have never really discussed on the CCP. Egos, Insecurities, Self-Esteem and Self Worth. What makes them appear? Your self-esteem is an assessment of your self-worth; how much or little are you of value to yourself and to others? Your ‘self’ concept is founded on a high self esteem; what are your self-beliefs (I am confident, I am honest, I am loyal) and do they help you actualize who you want to be in other words, your ideal ‘self’?The ego is the opposite of self-esteem. The problem with the ego is it can often ‘disguise’ itself as your self-esteem and it is important to become aware of this behavior when it arises. Your ego has a number of different definitions, but its most commonly agreed definition is it is your self-defense mechanism and more importantly, your false concept. You might realize that insecurity and self-importance are really just two sides of the same coin of self-absorption.Follow us on Twitter:Coach Weaver @CoachWeaverMRA | Coach Torrey @mistertorrey∙The Culture Classroom is powered by Pro Quick Draw. Josh Niblett Episode Notes: • Trust and Truth One one deals with US and the other deals with YOU

• The importance of letting your coaches have autonomy with their position group.

• Connection is the utmost importance of any organization

• Standards over Rules on your team - If you give people rules they look to break them, if you give them Standards the look to uphold them.

• Standards in Gainsville High School Football

• Don't make your first team meeting about football

• DNA System - The Standard A GET TO not a HAVE TO MOMENT

• What am I in it for and How can I help? You can have standards, but you better have a process - You better make it about people. Have a purpose when you wake up everyday - Don't have a plan because plans change.

• Age, Experience, and Titles DO NOT allow you to be a leader.

• When you have High Truth and High Love in your program you can coach a kid hard. You tell the kid it's not personal its personalized.

• You cannot improve in a day, but you can improve daily. Winners and Losers wake up everyday, but the difference is WINNERS have a system.

• There are two things you do everyday - Chase Best or Run From Worst

• Are you a consumer or contributor inside your program? We have to teach kids how to be a contributor.

• Talent vs. Tough - What happens when you match up across someone as talented as you or better - Toughness is the difference.

Can you juggle your priorities...Decide which balls are glass and which are plastic.

You can't keep all your balls in the air all the time but that's fine. JT and I discuss which to drop and which to keep in the air.

When there are so many balls in the air each day, you have to accept that some are going to drop. You can’t keep all the balls in the air all the time so you have to be intentional about which balls to drop, instead of it just happening.

Instead of focusing on the broad categories of work and family, you need to consider with more nuance which balls are glass, which are plastic, and focus on the glass ones.

Season 10 Episode 6: Day One or One Day by John Weaver & John Torrey

The Moment + the man!Have you ever been given a second chance? We unpack the legendary "CATCH" from David Tyree in Super Bowl XLII. With the ball in the air, Tyree perfectly timed his jump to catch it at the peak of its arc. Harrison immediately attempted to knock the ball from his possession as he came down with it, but Tyree locked it onto his helmet with incredible strength from his right hand before hitting the ground and securing it with both hands. Somehow, Tyree maintained control the entire time, and the ball never hit the ground. The greatest play in Super Bowl history had just set the stage for the greatest upset in Super Bowl history.... But there is more to the story ... Listen in this episode as we discuss how we are in the second chance business as coaches, educators, and leaders. Do you have Standards on your Team? Chances are you do. Most leaders of any organization or in this case a sports team have rules and/or standards. In this episode we look at the standard that was set by a captain on the Miami Dolphins when Larry Csonka was a rookie and was about to take the field with his helmet off. The next question you have to ask yourself as a leader is do I have a standard for everything in my program or organization? Lastly, we look at how much freedom do you give your players or employees inside your organization. Is trust earned or given? The answer is BOTH. Each year John Torrey and John Weaver pick a word for the New Year that will inspire us to be our best. We started this practice three years ago.As most of you may know Jon Gordon wrote One Word with Dan Britton and Jimmy Page to help people discover their word for the year. Dan and Jimmy invented the "One Word" practice and have been doing it with their families for over twenty years. Our words over the years have been: FINISH, INTENTIONAL and, PERSEVEREEach word has molded and shaped us to become better people, fathers, husbands, leaders and communicators. Looking back we might say that our One Word chose us more often than we chose it.It's also a fun team building exercise and much more effective than New Year's resolutions. 9 out of 10 people will fail with their resolutions but One Word sticks. No goals. No resolutions. Just One Word that helps you write and create a yearly chapter in your life story. It's powerful.Follow us on Twitter:Coach Torrey @mistertorreyCoach Weaver @CoachWeaverMRAPro Quick Draw is a powerful plug-in used on Microsoft Visio & PowerPoint for coaches to organize, format, and export playbooks, scout cards & presentations efficiently. Many words can be used to describe the man known as college football’s Pirate — “quirky,” “unique,” “genius” — but one thing is certain: Mike Leach beat to the rhythm of his own drum.In this episode we look into the legacy of Mike Leach.Joining Hal Mumme's staff is 1989 as the OC at Iowa Wesleyan, the Valdosta State, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. His first head coaching gig was at Texas Tech from 2000-09, then transformed and revitalized the town of Pullman, WA while at Washington State from 2012-19. Mississippi State is where his career ended as he moved on to greener fields in a place we can only imagine. The legacy that will outlive him is, of course, the “Air Raid” offense that his former boss, Hal Mumme, created and he essentially perfected. It’s appropriate that Leach won his last game — the Egg Bowl against arch-rival Ole Miss. But that’s just a victory that lives on paper. Leach’s real victory was in life. To a man, every coach who has made any kind of statement about his passing liked him as a person, respected his high level of intelligence and feared his “Air Raid” offense.Follow them on Twitter:John Torrey @mistertorreyJohn Weaver @CoachWeaverMRAPro Quick Draw is a powerful plug-in used on Microsoft Visio & PowerPoint for coaches to organize, format, and export playbooks, scout cards & presentations efficiently.

If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.

In a world filled with pride, arrogance, and self-centeredness, author Britt Gusmus had many hard lessons to learn. Lessons that continue every day. When a mirror was placed in front of him that reflected love, purity, honesty, strength, and compassion, he had two choices: He could turn and run. He could walk toward that light every day, one step at a time.

He chose to walk toward the light. And he began by asking questions. Had my upbringing led me astray? What if I changed my movement patterns based on the essentials to survive? What if my movement patterns were endless? What if the source of my strength is rooted in eternal inspiration that satisfies my instincts and human desire?

The Oak Tree Source dares men to find and welcome the light … a light that flows through the Source into their career and in relationships, flipping age old beliefs on the head. Too often, men define themselves by only what they do … by what they’ve accomplished … by the toys they own. Being a man takes work. With the Source as the guide, a generative force and faith emerges bringing purpose to life. Gusmus writes, “Being a man takes work.” Yes it does.

When you swallow truth about yourself and let that truth bring about change and growth, it makes you stronger—not weaker.

There is no easy answer to the question, “are multi-sport athletes better than single sport athletes?” Since there are many different opinions out there on the issue and every athlete is different; the simple answer is – it depends

Every athlete is different, and there are some real risks and rewards for specializing too early. The same goes for playing too many sports. Some athletes benefit from playing multiple sports in a year while other athletes need a break between seasons.

In this Motivation Monday we outline "AND" not "OR" students.

Die hard fans may choose to wear specific clothing, or sit in bizarre, uncomfortable places, or even forgo watching their team all together. Why? Because they are trying to control something that they have no control over: a game's outcome.

In 2016, the Chicago Cubs made history, breaking the 108 year old "Curse of the Billy Goat." Prior to Game 7, Cubs manager Joe Maddon affixed six letters to the upper right hand corner of that game's lineup card. DNBAFF: do not be a f--king fan. These six letters reminded Maddon to avoid getting swept up in the emotion of the game and to focus on the process of what it takes to win and the task at hand in the moment.

Are you a fan or a leader? Do you act out of emotion or lead with intention? In Week 15's Motivation Monday, we explore how the emotions of a moment can cause leaders to become fans. As legendary Eagles Defensive Coordinator Buddy Ryan once said:

"If you listen to the fans, you'll be sitting up there with them."

Eric Dickerson was the nation's top prospect on National Signing Day in 1979, and the future NFL Hall of Fame running back was highly recruited by every major program across the country. Abiding by his mother's wishes, Dickerson chose to remain close to home, attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

There were many reasons SMU appealed to Dickerson. First of all, as portrayed in the hit television series of the time period, Dallas was a place where things were happening. Second, SMU played their home games in Texas Stadium, sharing the home locker room with the Dallas Cowboys. Finally, the decal of a galloping pony amid a red, white, and blue uniform gave SMU the "cool" factor Dickerson was looking for.

But things weren't perfect as a Mustang. Recruited alongside Dickerson was Craig James, another running back from the Houston area. For the next four years, Dickerson and James shared the SMU backfield, each receiving a 50/50 split of the offensive running game. Dickerson liked James, but hated splitting carries with him. It wasn't until he got to the NFL that he appreciated how much sharing the workload saved his body physically.

The leadership lesson from this example is simple: we ALL have a role to play within our organization. Listen to Week 14's Motivation Monday to learn more and identify how YOUR role impacts the team's performance.

Motivation Monday Week 13: Short Rest

Pitchers in Major League Baseball are sometimes asked to pitch on just three days' rest instead of their usual four. This strategy is referred to as going on short rest. There are critical moments throughout the season when a manager will disrupt his pitching rotation in order to give the team the best opportunity to succeed. This strategy can be risky. After all, the manager is fully aware that their pitcher may not bring their best stuff. So why do they do it? Because experience and focus can't be substituted for.

Elite performers find ways to succeed when they aren't feeling 100%. Anyone can perform at a high level when they feel 100%, but most of us only feel 100% a handful of days each year. If you are a high performer in your organization, then you have been or are being asked to produce on short rest. Click HERE to listen to Week 13's Motivation Monday message and learn how to be your best when you're not feeling 100%.

Throw the Boomerang This idea is simple ... We all have that one friend or coach that we can call or text that we haven't talked to or seen in days, months or years and start a conversation like time was never lost.

The Relationship Boomerang goes like this: If you have a relationship with people and you never drop the boomerang, as long as its in the air and it doesn't matter if it's in the air for minutes, days, years or even a decade ... as long as you don't let that relationship totally die ... the boomerang always comes back.

Close the Distance ... Keep The Distance ... it doesn't really matter, just keep the boomerang IN THE AIR.

When you win, it's easy to have fun. But how do you have fun when your team is not winning?

Hayden Fry, the legendary football coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, used to tell his team to "scratch where it itches." When practices were slow, sloppy, or full of dropped balls and missed tackles, Coach Fry would abruptly stop practice and gather his squad together at midfield.

Sometimes he would call for a team sing-along.

Sometimes he would ask one of his players to tell jokes until everyone was hootin' and hollerin'.

Then, when the Hawks went back to practice, Fry's team would play mistake-free.

The lesson: you can't take yourself too seriously.

Hayden Fry was a master psychologist, and his philosophy of "scratch where it itches" helped his players thrive under pressure.

How does YOUR team have fun at practice?

Listen here to Week 11's Motivation Monday message about the importance of having fun at practice.

Let's get better together!

Motivation Monday Week 7:

Culture is turning into the "BUZZ" word for successful teams. It seems like a lot of teams say that we have a good culture. What does that mean? Or some teams say we do a really good job at building relationships. How do you do that, and what does it look like?

We believe that that the new superpower for coaches is the connection piece. Coaches connecting with coaches, coaches with players, and players with players.

What are you doing to connect with coaches on your staff and athletes on your team?

“I think all of those environments, whether it’s a business environment or sporting environment, are about developing people. So, if you develop your people, your business is going to be more successful. It’s just a matter of creating an environment where that becomes a happening every day.”

Sir Graham Henry, former New Zealand All Blacks Coach
