Tunde Baiyewu, the soulful voice behind the multi-platinum-selling Lighthouse Family, returns with a new, intimate project, Tunde & The Troubadours EP 1, releasing today, Friday November 1st. The Four-track EP is the first in a special series that delves into Tunde’s love for singer-songwriter music, particularly inspired by the 1970s troubadour era. Reuniting with renowned Lighthouse Family producer Mike Peden, Tunde brings together a heartfelt collection of covers and collaborations with some of South Africa’s most revered musical talents.

South African Roots and Global Inspirations

Reflecting on his decision to launch the project in collaboration with South African artists, Tunde explains, “South Africa actually chose me! I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and listened to iconic artists like Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba. When a friend in Cape Town asked if I fancied doing a duet with a South African artist, a light bulb went off in my head.” The EP celebrates this musical heritage while embracing the international troubadour tradition that has long fascinated Tunde.

He chats with Danny about the EP and a possible SA tour!

Petit Biscuit is back in the spotlight with the upcoming release of his new album "Discipline". Having started his career at the age of 15, the French electro wunderkind has already conquered the world with his dream pop hits and captivating melodies. Following the worldwide success of his previous releases, the 24-year-old producer/songwriter/performer is now ready to unveil his new creations, with his own voice at the heart of his songs.

Songs from the album have already generated over 600 Million TikTok views and the first single "You Don't Ignore" hit charts around the world including France, Canada, Brazil and Mexico. The focus single for the album will be '"Cruel Heart" which will be accompanied by a music video directed by Quentin Deronzier (Doja Cat, The Weeknd, Drake, Maluma, etc.)

"I started composing Cruel Heart in 2019 during a trip to California. The vocal hook that makes up the chorus had been stuck in my head for several years. My friend Hugo, whom you know as Madeon, wanted to participate in the writing process. We often have late-night discussions on various topics: from the paradoxes of life in Los Angeles to our shared passion for investing in characters to write from their perspective. For Cruel Heart, we wanted to detail all the toxic traits we observe in many passionate romantic relationships. The darkness of the arrangement and the musical intention perfectly fit this theme." - Petit Biscuit

Craig Lucas, the multi-talented singer-songwriter, is back with his latest single, ‘Falling in Love,’ a track that dives headfirst into the chaos of unrequited affection and the hilarity that ensues. This new release marks another milestone in Craig's impressive career, blending personal experiences with an infectious indie vibe.

Craig explains the inspiration behind ‘Falling in Love,’ saying, “This song is my anthem to the chaos of chasing boys who are unavailable. I joke about needing heartbreak for inspiration, but this track proves it! It's about a particular boy I fell for after just one night together—a reminder of how embarrassingly fast I catch feelings, especially for those who aren't available in that way. There's something thrilling about falling for someone who's always just a bit out of reach. It's chaotic, it's painful, and if you step back, it's kind of hilarious. This track is me owning up to my messy love life. What’s a little heartbreak anyway?”

Danny and Craig got really real about their 'Red flags'.

Loki says that his single, "Nog Een", which he recorded together with Die Heuwels Fantasties, already had its origins in 2018. "I was busy with music for the kykNET series Tydelik Terminaal at the time. The score for this series had a strong electronic feel to it. At the same time, I was busy with the writing and recording of my debut Afrikaans album, that took almost four years to complete. I needed three more songs to complete te album. A 40 second- piece of music for the Tydelik Terminaal soundtrack stuck with me and inspired the chorus and verse of the single “Nog Een.” I just knew that I had to ask Die Heuwels Fantasties if they would be keen to collab on this particular track. It was a perfect fit.
Pierre Greeff from Die Heuwels Fantasties has been working with Loki on various music productions and projects for many years. He says: “Loki can do absolutely everything. He is the real deal. I really like what we did here. “Nog Een” is one of my favourite collabs up to date.”

“I believe music is a form of therapy,” says Thapelo. As a member of the LGBQTI community, and a newcomer to the South African music scene, the singer is coming in guns blazing with a beautiful pop / RnB track and the message that ‘Love has no gender’.

Teaming up with the renowned singer and producer, Gino Lee, the two not only put together a powerful composition, but the song, titled ‘Caught Up’, also served as a cathartic process for Thapelo and an anthem for same-sex relationships.

Fresh from his own broken relationship, the songwriter was experiencing a whirlwind of emotions at the time and decided to put pen to paper.

He explains, “I was in a relationship with someone I loved deeply. It was that ‘I’ll do anything for you’ kind of love. I gave everything I had, but got nothing in return. I knew I was fighting a losing battle to a point where I was having sleepless nights.”

Thapelo, knowing the relationship was toxic, finally built up the courage to leave. Through this song, the singer hopes to create awareness that people of the LGBTQI community experience love and durable relationships, same as everyone else.

He says, “I write about my personal experiences, but the music speaks to similar experiences that others can relate to. There are still many people who don’t understand the concept of homosexual relationships, but we also fall in love and enter into committed relationships. We go through the same challenges that heterosexual people do.”

Danny Painter chats to Baker Grace and Joss Austin!

South African Pop star Joss Austin, recently teamed up with American Singer-songwriter Baker Grace, on the endearing single ‘Missing You’. Jacaranda FM listeners have been loving the single on their station’s airwaves, so Baker and Joss have given Jacaranda FM a special gift: an exclusive acoustic performance of ‘Missing You’.

Joss Austin, who’s had multiple hits across local radio and worked with some of the biggest names in the music business, signed to US label Riveting Music just over a year ago. The label is also home to US singer-songwriter Baker Grace who has been captivating international audiences with her incredible solo releases. It was a no-brainer to bring these 2 incredible voices together on ‘Missing You’ and now fans will get to enjoy the stripped-down version.

As with the initial recording of ‘Missing You’, once-again Joss and Baker connected across the ocean to create this acoustic version with Joss recording from South Africa and Baker from the USA. This is what they both had to say about producing this special version:

“Over the moon that we decided to strip down this song. The essence of where it came from started with guitar and Baker Grace in a room over in the USA and so I’m glad I got to become part of that in this acoustic version. Really amplifies the message of the song that I feel it resonates with so many at some point in their life. Excited to hear what people have to say about it.”
– Joss Austin

“I really love the acoustic version because it gives the lyrics and raw emotion in this song a chance to shine. It also emphasizes how well our voices work together. It is always so great connecting with Joss and working together miles apart, although challenging with time differences. I recorded it in my home studio in New Jersey and the video was recorded on an iPhone in my bedroom. Amazing what you can do with just one phone and one light these days!”

A new podcast series that maps not only the practical aspects of psychiatry, but also its purpose and shares a broader view on the service and outcomes that the discipline provides to society. The podcast series Beyond Madness, hosted by founder and editor in chief of South African Psychiatry Professor Christopher Paul Szabo, intends to share the narrative of the discipline and in the process demystify both psychiatry and the plight of those afflicted with mental illness.

“The idea of a podcast came as a natural extension of the work related to South African Psychiatry, which provides a platform for content that is not only for the discipline of psychiatry but importantly about the discipline,” says Professor Szabo. “The written word is one thing, the spoken word another. Moreover, the interactive nature of the podcast medium allows for the emergence of thoughts and ideas beyond a published piece.” He hopes that the podcasts will reach clinical professionals as well as resonate with the general public.

“If patient care is at the centre of our efforts, then information impacting on such care should be accessible. Patients have families, friends, colleagues – all of whom are impacted by patient well-being. In this sense, patients impact communities and society at large,” Professor Szabo adds. And October is Mental Health awareness month.

Professor Szabo selected the title of the podcast series carefully. It is intentionally slightly provocative but at the same time intended to highlight that there is a narrative to mental illness, and it is a layered story.

Well, it's really specific to you as a human, your physiology, and the way your body responds to training but, Danny and Izelle have been lifting weights for years and as you can see, have two completely different body types and hold weight differently. However, the one thing that remains true with both of them is that the cleaner the eating, the leaner the muscle.

2020 kicked off with a bang for the local band with the exclusive Global Citizen #TogetherAtHome campaign, the release of their stellar radio hits, ‘Haters’ and ‘Last Forever’, gaining traction across the globe on notable Spotify playlists, and climbing the charts on major radio stations across the country. This year, the band look to keep their foot on the pedal with the release of their much anticipated next single titled, ‘22’ , an upbeat summer anthem already finding its place on charts at home with nostalgia-riddled lyrics which throws back to their early days - living and touring in their adolescence.

‘When writing this song I wanted to channel a feel-good energy of our journey so far as a band and as individuals, which also relates closely enough to the memories we all experienced in our early twenties. A care-free, adventurous and invincible time of life,’ says frontman Tristan Coetzee.

The new single speaks to the trials of growing up and getting tied up in the laborious realities of adulthood, often losing touch with our younger selves. This is rounded up with a call to shed that pressure and go back to the care-free living we know and want.

Sarah Robyn Farrell is many things – a musician, an eco-communicator, a writer, and an activist. Her debut single, ‘Love in our Hearts’, certainly aims to heal the world from its many issues in the most simple and honest way.

Armed with a ukulele and a strong will to use her voice for good, Sarah explains the motivation behind this, her first single:

"Love in our hearts’ is about recognising our shared humanity in a time of increasing social tension and ecological decay,” says Sarah. “It speaks to the fact that most people have a lot to unlearn, while still having the ability to love, and to change. It also speaks to the fact that ‘love’ as we currently understand it, may need to be redefined to include aspects and ideas that can lead to real positive change. This kind of revolutionary love could help us save ourselves and restore our home planet.”

The hall is decorated with bright streamers. Pop music fills the room, beckoning people to dance. Young students adorned in custom-made gowns take the hand of their well-dressed dates. In South Africa, a matric dance is the first time many pupils are made to feel special. But not all can afford the occasion. This was apparent to design duo Fagin Hardine and Adri Andrews of Paarl. Wanting to provide for the youth of their community, they decided to honour the final-year students in style.

Hardine and Andrews founded their clothing brand, Ke’lab, in 2017. After noticing a number of matriculants were unable to purchase their own outfits, the small business joined forces with The Giving Hand to establish The Matric Drive. “By designing for these students, we’re able to create beautiful and long-lasting memories,” Hardine says. Sketching, stitching, and hemming away, the team gifted garments to hard-working matriculants. “It’s more than just a gown,” Andrews says. “It’s a celebration of academic achievement.”

Joshua Rubin is no idle spectator. He’s a documentary photographer and videographer who immerses himself in the details of other people’s lives.Compelled by the stories that each of us carry and the desire to amplify them, Rubin spends hours driving around Cape Town searching for willing conversationalists. Focusing on marginalised communities, he peels back layers of stigma to reveal the truth.

“My obligation as a photographer is to take a story that hasn’t been heard and bring it into the public,” Rubin says. His revealing work zooms in on disadvantaged neighbourhoods, like those of the Cape Flats. These suburbs are stigmatised as violent and gang-ridden. Rubin’s subjects receive nothing but averted eyes from most, but he is determined to rouse his audience into recognising their humanity and dignity. He’s made personal connections with gang leaders and those who live on the streets – and it’s not just because he’s curious. The filmmaker has real struggles in common with rejected members of society. “I’ve had very big drug problems in my past and I didn’t finish school,” Rubin says.He builds relationships with anyone who’ll speak to him, and is granted a rare gift because of it: trust. Through empathetic and compassionate conversation, the 24-year-old is invited into a world that few see. “I believe that it is my job to create positive change,” Rubin says. His short films have showcased a self-taught builder who transformed his shack into a palatial home, driving lessons with his housekeeper, and the unnervingly empty streets of Cape Town in the first few weeks of the COVID-19 lockdown. Rubin uplifts his subjects as well as his viewers through his films. Shining a light on those around him, he shifts perspectives.

Thanks to several features on dance tracks amassing over 50 million streams; most notably Tez Cadey’s “Walls” and Mozambo & Basic Tape’s “Bright Side”, Church began to garner recognition early on, before heading to university.

At eighteen Julia decided to further herself artistically, moving to the UK to study music production at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) learning the creative skills that have led to her unmistakable sound, one that draws ties to her childhood idols.

Producing and writing all of her own music, is a key part of her sound that’s won her fans across the globe, yet she finds herself having to make the distinction that she IS her own producer, a question rarely thrown at male artists.

“Maybe it's just a reflection on me and my past experiences in male-dominant sessions but I feel like I am more reserved when I write with a group of guys as if my ideas aren’t as worthy and I’m just there to sing, even though writing is where my love really lies.”, says Julia, ‘’Writing is the ultimate form of catharsis for me.”

“People don’t realise that being able to do everyday things is a privilege,” Portia Mavhungu says.

While the loss of her mobility was only temporary, her mental health took a turn for the worst. Mavhungu understood that many endure this struggle for a lifetime. So she decided to redesign the wheelchair. During her recovery, Mavhungu started to think up ways to make the bathroom more accessible for people with disabilities. “Toilets are a part of our everyday lives and everyone should be safe, comfortable and happy using one,” she says. Her ideas soon materialised into the Para-Tube, a retrofitted wheelchair seat with an adjustable opening and built-in biodegradable bags that functions as a toilet.

December holidays are known as 'the silly season' in animal welfare. It's a time where we go away, drink a little too much and maybe forget about our furkids.

Which means its the busiest time of the year for organisations like Border Collie Rescue.

In a year like the one we've just had, with lockdowns and economic struggles, this Christmas we really need to do whatever we can to help our favourite animal shelters. Whether that is volunteering your time or doing a quick EFT, animal welfares, shelters and foster homes alike will be grateful for any and all the help they can get!

With the recent lockdown period and months of 'man-alone' struggle in his home studio, the Cape rock talent, Jack Stone, returns to his legacy with his first Afrikaans EP Refleksie! "After all, Afrikaans is my mother tongue, and I recently formed a new connection with it, one that I am now proud of. I feel the time is now ripe for soulful Afrikaans music and that I am now ready to truly share myself with my listeners ”, says Jack.

Jack has made his mark in the local music industry over the past 14 years with his fresh sound, unique voice and energetic style. Following his full-length English-language album Walk On in 2012, numerous English solo tracks such as Blood Sweat & Years and Common Rejection (2014), The Rapture (2015), and Summer Love (2018) have emerged from his creativity.

Jack prefers that his music not be put in a box. "Who knows, maybe ;Refleksie' will create a brand new vibe", he says. He does have an innate passion for various genres and finds his inspiration time and time again through a wide sound. On his own soil, artists such as Francois van Coke, Ard Matthews and Arno Carstens (with whom he has performed in the past) inspire him, but his unique style remains unmistakable.

Celine Bocks is not a hairstylist, but a healer.

For decades of South Africa’s history, natural hair was stigmatised and treated as inferior. People of colour are still impacted by this today.

“Growing up with kinky hair was a difficult journey because people are just looking down at you,” Bocks says. Now, she’s fighting back with the most powerful weapon – love.

Bocks started the Citrusdal Natural Hair Beauties group with her sister to instil dignity and worth in her community. Through this initiative, Bocks offers workshops where girls are taught how to nurture their hair.

“The best hair is healthy hair,” she says. Untangling harmful perceptions, Bocks is sending lies about cultural identity down the drain and helping youth embrace themselves.

The ball spins through the air, landing in a teenager’s open arms. The player sprints towards the end of the pitch and scores a try. On the sideline, counsellor Cassandra Carels smiles with pride. “There is so much therapy within sport,” she says. In many underprivileged communities in South Africa, poverty leads to crime and violence. This has a profound impact on people’s mental health, particularly youth. Using touch rugby to foster emotional understanding and awareness, Carels is providing vulnerable teenagers with the support she never received.

Carels grew up in Hanover Park in Cape Town. After her father was sent to prison and her mother moved away, her grandparents became her guardians. However, when she turned 18, Carels discovered she was pregnant and they cut her off. But she was still determined to make something of herself. While pregnant, she worked night shifts and put herself through university. After completing a degree in psychology, Carels decided to dedicate her life to assisting and upskilling youth.

Carels is now the manager of The School of Hard Knocks, a centre for at-risk teenagers in the Western Cape. After their games of touch rugby, the kids and their coaches address circumstances the children may be experiencing, including violence, poverty, gangsterism, and broken homes. “You can’t unlock things within you without having the emotional intelligence of doing so,” Carels explains. But their main emphasis is on the positive features that shine through each individual, teaching them self-worth and helping them smile each day.

It’s easy to down a bottle of water on a hot summer’s day. Getting rid of it is the hard part. Most toss it in the trash. But we can’t make these vessels go away. Plastic items don’t simply decompose. They can lie in landfills for hundreds of years – unless Gina Tarboton gets a hold of them. In this trendsetter's hands, plastic is given a new life as stylish board-shorts.

Tarboton had long been seeking sustainable fabrics for her fashion brand, GiLo Lifestyle. Distraught by the high levels of pollution, she and her business partner Loren Dyer decided to create clothing made from plastic bottles. Picked from landfills, beaches, and oceans in countries with the highest rates of plastic waste, like China and India, the bottles undergo thorough cleaning before being broken down into flakes. These are processed into pure plastic pellets, which are stretched out into a yarn to make fabric. With a sprinkling of spandex added for stretch, the result is a material made of 92% recycled plastic. After being printed in bright patterns, it’s sewn into board-shorts and lifestyle shorts.

Where do you belong? Solomon Mugutso, a 42-year-old artist, was forced to leave his home in Zimbabwe. When he relocated to South Africa, he struggled to find a space that welcomed him. “Having moved around a lot in my life, it made me feel displaced,” Mugutso says. But soon enough, he discovered more people like him. Using art, Mugutso began creating a space where people could explore their backgrounds and connect with each other.

In his childhood, Mugutso would sketch out the unique features of those he saw on the street. Today, his preferred medium is sand. Mugutso collects soil from the different places he visits and unites them in a single portrait piece – one face that symbolises many. His works represent the collective consciousness of people from separate areas. Mugutso is also a committed art teacher who offers free classes to all those interested, no matter where they’re from. “Why would I charge for a material I know I have in abundance?” he asks. “Art makes me feel like I belong and I’d like my students to feel the same.”

Mugutso has exhibited in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and even across the seas in Sweden. In 2019, he was the Most Recommended Artist at the Rosebank Rotary Arts Festival. Covering a range of issues through his work, such as marginalisation and gender-based violence, Mugutso interlinks a diversity of viewers through the emotions conjured in his pieces. “Art has given me a place in this world,” he says. Through individual expression, he’s creating universal connection.

In Cape Town’s Black River, a group of superheroes are hard at work. Slipping on their protective suits and sun hats, Georgia McTaggart and her crew don’t quite resemble the crime-fighting characters who frequent comic book covers. Yet, they’re equally courageous. Gripping an empty garbage bag and a rake, they probe the treacherous terrain and extract hazardous pollutants. After a gruelling couple of hours, they toss the last of the malignant material into a pile and grin. This isn’t just their job – it’s their duty.

After realising the damaging effects her lifestyle had on the environment, McTaggart began recycling, buying zero-waste products, and picking up rubbish wherever she could. But she knew she could do more. So in 2018, McTaggart founded Help Up, a community initiative that’s cleaning the city’s most polluted areas and creating economic opportunities for homeless and unemployed people at the same time. Each week, the Help Up team, known as Avatars, remove litter from catchment points in canals and rivers, as well as streets that have become dumping grounds. Toxic waste flows through the Black River, making these cleanups especially dangerous. Nonetheless, McTaggart and her team regularly brave the perilous streambeds to restore them to their former glory.

The cleanups have improved the quality of life of the indigenous flora and fauna, as well as the surrounding community. It has also provided over 300 destitute people with an income and purpose, instilling them with a passion for protecting nature. “It’s important for us to realise how important cleanliness is to our environment, but also for our self-worth,” McTaggart says. She demonstrates the impact lending a helping hand can have on both the earth and each other. A positive wave of change erupts from our most selfless acts.

In a month where we are celebrating women, and the month I have chosen education over celebration, I struggle with one question, the sam question every single year.'What does it mean to be a woman?'

I don't know the answer, I don't think I have ever known the answer and that lead me to even more questions around femininity and womanhood in general. What makes me a woman? What is a woman?

Coming from a place of privilege, I decided to reach out and approach women I look up to, women who inspire me and ask the real questions, learn the hard truths and figure out what the answer is to my question. Cher Petersen is one such woman, someone who had to fight to become the woman she is today. Someone who I have immense respect for and someone who I know you will love, just as much as I do!

I spoke to her about what it is to be a trans woman, was it is to be a woman and how we can be better women to each other, using the privileged that we have to uplift each other over bringing each there down.

It's tough to stay creative, even more so during a global crisis. Should we really be painting or filling profiteroles? Artist and baker Alice Toich thinks so. When COVID-19 forced people out of the streets and into their homes, Toich’s ingenuity kicked in. With her series of art challenges, she’s providing a way to reconnect with beauty, pain, and each other. When COVID-19 forced people out of the streets and into their homes, Toich’s ingenuity kicked in. With her series of art challenges, she’s providing a way to reconnect with beauty, pain, and each other.

From a young age, Toich was blending vibrant hues into works that reflected the realities around her. She unfolded her easel in the classrooms of Michaelis School of Fine Art and the Florence Academy of Art, where she honed her skills in portraiture and oil painting. When Toich isn’t in the studio, she’s decorating sweet confectioneries in the kitchen. In her exhibition The Icing Pink Ether, Toich painted scrumptious portraits and decadent cakes, creating a sugar-coated world where unpalatable truths could be gulped down. Although she uses both art and baking as a platform to encourage debate around socio-political issues, it’s also a form of therapy. “Creating has always been a transformative tool to translate emotions,” Toich says.

Following South Africa’s announcement of a national quarantine to curb the spread of COVID-19, Toich launched the #21DaysofArtSA challenge online. “The lockdown made me reflect on how I could contribute towards creating relief and unity,” she says. Each day, Toich announces a new theme, from ‘something growing’ to ‘the meaning of celebration’, encouraging the public to paint, sculpt, bake or sew a personal response. Drawing inspiration from the everyday, participants showcase artworks that have relieved emotional tensions and fostered a healthy frame of mind.

Would you know if you were depressed, or would you find a way to explain away your symptoms? And, if you realize that something more serious than a blue mood was at play, would you reach out for help? Can you afford it?For most South Africans, the answer to these questions is ‘no’ – which is precisely why Barbara Ayissi was moved to create Puzzle of My Life, an online mental health service.

Barbara was part of the human resources team at a large multinational company when she realized the need for such a service. “We had recently implemented a wellness programme but, although access was free, takeup was very low,” Barbara explains. Just why this should be the case wasn’t immediately apparent. After all, with one in four people suffering from mental illness, South Africans feel a definite need for connection. The problem, Barbara guessed, was that many were put off by the idea that people would know they had reached out. “There is a definite stigma around mental illness,” she points out.

Taking inspiration from online dating sites, Barbara realized the potential of online counselling; a service that would enable people to get the help they need while remaining discreet. After all, since we are accustomed to going online for whatever we need, it’s not a big stretch to seek a counsellor in cyberspace.

I got to speak to her about this and more, listen here:
