Waffle On about Lifeforce

Oh this episode is a corker, its a divisional episode and its two against one becaue we have a special guest. We last saw him wearing a kilt and swinging a sword during our Highlander episode, well this time Mr David Ray is more sensibly dressed yet still full of passion. Kell is in agreement, Meds, not so much which of course makes great content.

Patrick Stewart pops up in this along with some great effects (for its time) and a naked woman wondering around kissing people to death. Not a bad way to go all in all.

As always please do share our podcast with anyone who can put up with us.

Roger Moore stars in his final adventure in the tux, he looks a bit ropey bless him but we love the old spy and he bows out with some dubious stuntmen and some even more dubious face lifts. Still banter is large on this episode so we hope you enjoy it.

Waffle On about Taken.

Hello and Happy New Year to everyone, lets all hope 2022 will be a corker. We hope you all are safe and well.

So Meds and Kell decided to start this years run of Waffle On in style with a great pop corn movie. Sometimes you just want to pop a film on, watch some mindless violence and enjoy seeing the bad guys get their teeth kicked in and legs electrocuted. Made in 2008 this film changed the direction of Liam Neesons career. He went from being a romantic actor to a leading action star. The film produced 2 sequels and a tv series. The films were written by legendary film maker Luc Besson, a often over looked creator who has produced some amazing films such as Fifth Element, Le Femme Nikita, Leon and the brilliant French Taxi films.

As usual please write in via waffleonpodcast@gmail.com or join our Facebook group and send us your thoughts. Sadly due to pandemic and work commitments Meds and Kell will be doing some of the episodes over skype but this shouldn't be for too long. If you want to join in and listen when watching the film throw your DVD in and pause it just as the words 'A Long Time Ago in a galaxy far Far Away....' pop up and we then count down to play. If you end up listening without the film then that will equally be ok as you can hear it in the background.

Remember we have a Facebook group page so come along and join us, and please do leave us feedback on iTunes or any other podcast info page.

Next up is our Christmas episode in which the duo throw on their white vests and get ready for Die Hard.

Waffle On About Monty Pythons Life of Brian.

Welcome to this months edition of Waffle On Podcast in which Meds and Kell discuss the brilliant Monty Python film Life of Brian. Often touted as the best comedy film ever made (we agree) it also has caused (unfairly) some controversy. Written and starring John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Eric Idle this film tells the story of Brian a Jewish (or is he a Roman) man caught up being mistaken for the Messiah and no matter how many time he tries to convince people he is just a average bloke no one believes hm including Pilate the Roman leader.

We play clips from the film and of course the main title theme and the brilliant end credits ong Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles came out in 1987 and is actually a Thanksgiving set film but hey, come on it feels and looks like a Christmas film and as we in England don't celebrate thanksgiving we class it as a Christmas film. Starring Steve Martin and John Candy in the lead roles this films which is basically a road movie comedy, it is packed with laughs, slapstick and of course feel good moments.

Waffle On About Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

Written and Starring Mathew Holness and Richard Ayoade this brilliant comedy series first hit the screens back in 2004. A homage to early (and cheap) 1980's style action programmes Darkplace is set in a hospital over the very gates of hell in Romford. Holness plays the main character Garth Marenghi the horror writer who in turn plays Dr Rick Dagless in, Ayoade plays Dean Learner as Garths agent who in turn plays Thornton Reed, Matt Berry plays Todd Rivers who then plays Dr Lucien sanchez and Alice Lowe plays Madeline Wool who then plays Dr Liz Asher. Darkplace is a brilliant, quirky programme that benefits from visual gags, mad syncing, out of scene music cues and seriously bad Foley work all done deliberatlye. Its ounds weird and indeed it is but we hope listening to this podcast while make you go and seek it out and enjoy the dark world of Garth Marenghi and his Darkplace.

As is our norm now we have put a special surprise at the end of the episode. So please do listen to the promo's and then enjoy the song taken from Darkplace called 'One Track Lover' performed by Matt Berry as his character in the show 'Todd Rivers'

Waffle On Tribute to Norman Wisdom.

Welcome to this special tribute podcast to a fantastic comedian and all round entertainer Sir Norman Wisdom who sadly passed away on the 4th of October 2010. A well loved man who's career blossomed in the late 50's and early 60's. His films were not popular with the critics but loved by the general public. Later in life he took to stage work and stand up comedy drawing great success along with some serious straight roles.

He lived on the Isle of Man for many years and it was here that he passed away at the grand age of 95. We felt it fitting and only right that we do a tribute podcast to Norman and i hope that you will enjoy this and for anyone who is not familiar with is work please do seek out the film On the Beat from 1962 which is a personal favourite.

We'll be back in a few weeks with the official October show.

Waffle On About Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Welcome to this months episode of Waffle On. This month we talk about the brilliant 1998 gangster comedy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. this film launched the directorial career of Guy Ritchie and launched the acting career of Jason Statham. The film has a plethora of British talent including Jason Flemyng, Nick Moran, Dexter Fletcher and Vinnie Jones. It has a brilliant script and we add in some samples from the film for your 9and of course our) enjoyment.

WARNING THIS EDITION HAS SWEAR WORDS IN IT. Yes alas we have to put this warning out because the samples from the film do contain swear words so expect the odd f-bomb and other colourful words. I don't agree with censoring films or anything really so i wont be bleeping anything out. You have been warned.

BONUS We like to treat you wonderful listeners so keep on listening through the promos and you get a full song from the soundtrack of Lock Stock. We play you Truly Madly Deeply by Skanga a song that was not featured on the USA version of the soundtrack.

Next month is of course Halloween so we will be doing a special Halloween show in the shape of Waffle On about Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Comments welcome as usual to waffleonpodcast@gmail.com

Also if you fancy a bit more of Meds's work head over to http://themartiansarehere.com and check out the brilliant on going story by Stefan Sawynok.

Waffle On About Star Trek The Next Generation.

Star Trek The Next Generation is as weall  know an American television programme so why are we waffling on about it. Well Its simple. Once a year Waffle On is going to do a show about a prominent American programme that had a big effect on both Meds and Kell. This year its time for TNG.

Star Trek TNG hit our screens in the mid 1980's and impressionable young lads that we were (and geeks at heart) we both jumped into the magical world of this brilliant programme. Plus we both quite fancied Tasha Yar and Deanna Troi. The first few series of TNG were a bit crap, and we say that in our own friendly banter way but the other four series were brilliant. This episode is a little bit longer than normal but it is packed with listener mp3's from Rico, Al, Rick, Kenny, Harry, Jen, Angela, Sue, Sarah and a brilliant email from Katrin so we hope you enjoy it.

As always thanks for listening and make it so.

We talk about the series and Brett himself, along with a brief chat about the other actors in the series. We also talk about other Holmes television series and the odd film but it is Jeremy Brett that we concentrate on.

Brett's Holmes ran from 1984 to 1994 and for me was the ultimate Holmes sadly the series only ended because of Jeremy's death. We hope you enjoy this episode, we recorded it on skype but i think it sounds pretty cool.

Rentaghost

Rentaghost was a classic British children's television comedy show produced and broadcast by the BBC between 6 January 1976 and 11 June 1984. The shows plot centred on the antics of a number of ghosts who worked for a firm called Rentaghost, which rented out the ghosts for various tasks.

Join Meds and kell as they waffle on about this classic TV show, its almost been forgotten except from those kids born in the late sixties to the early seventies. Its a great concept for a show and when you look back at it the word fun comes to mind. Although we do not say it at the beginning we do have comments about Rentaghost and many thanks to Daniel Vieira, Tim Morris and Mike Featherstone.

There is also a competition on this episode, yes good people. If you would like to win a CD called Stargazer (ambient music to chill out and watch the stars go by) by the wonderful Rick Moyer then please answer the question that we ask and send your answer to waffleonpodcast@googlemail.com and you could win a great free cd.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet On this months episode Meds and Kell talk about the classic comedy drama Auf Wiederdehen, Pet. Created by Franc Roddam and written by the brilliant Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais it ran from 1983 to 1986 and then from 2004 to 2008. Introducing such actors as Tim Healy, Timothy Spall, Kevin Whately, Jimmy Nail, Pat Roach, Christopher Hairbank, Gary Holton and later Noel Clarke to the screens all of these actors have gone to higher things, except Gary, sadly he died during filming of the second series.

The basics of Pet are a group of our of work builders head to Germany to seek work, here we see them get into all kind of situations some good, and many involving the character of Oz brilliantly played by the awesome Jimmy Nail. There was only four series of Auf Wiederdehen, Pet and because of the sad loss of Pat Roach i very much doubt we will see these characters on our television screens again.

Enjoy.

We'd just like to thank Arthur Vasey Robbo1510, Eamon, Dangelus and Crystal who both sent us nice comments over the past months. And a big shout out to Rick Moyer, and Peter Foltz who all contributed to Waffle On, we shall shout you on our next recording.

Apologies for the clicking sounds you may hear during this episode. We recorded this two months ago before i became a dad and we think it was the old battery lead causing the odd click in recording. We have a new lead so all is well. Thanks

Fawlty Towers

Join Meds and Kell as they talk about this fabulous British Comedy Fawlty Towers. Written and performed by John Cleese and Connie Booth, Fawlty Towers is now over 34 years old and still going strong. Only two series were made and its a formula that comedians such as Ricky Gervais have taken upon themselves to keep their own comedy fresh. Also starring Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales the team created a wonderful programme that has never been beaten.

The premise of the show is centred around Basil Fawlty played by Cleese a hotel owner who is dominated by his wife Sybil and has an amazing disregard for anyone who is below what he classes as 'the best class'. A fantastic comedy that is worth not only hearing about here but must be viewed to get the ultimate pleasure of Cleese and Booths writing.

Star Wars In the Shadows. On this special mini waffle on i talk about a fantastic new audio drama coming out soon called Star wars in The Shadows, it is written, directed and produced by Dany Pépin (37y/o) a French-Canadian born in Quebec, now living in Ottawa, Ontario. SWITS is Dany’s first original story of any type in his second language (English) and only second audio drama project following the surprising adaptation of Karen Traviss’ short story Omega Squad: Targets. Dany was mostly known in Star Wars fandom by his implication in the French community and his Star Wars radio show Star Wars en Direct, both in French (since 2001) and English (2003-2006). SWITS is a classic Star Wars space opera not unlike “A New Hope”. I would describe it as a light fugitive/adventure type of story with some mature theme inserted within. SWITS has obviously been inspired by the Star Wars movies but also its Expanded Universe (EU) like the media giant Shadows of the Empire and The Force Unleashed. There are many small EU references that will appeal to the fans of the genre, but most importantly the participation of Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, Xizor, Guri and Mon Mothma in the actual story plot. head to www.creativeaudioscape.com for more info.

John Ryan.

Cartoonist John Ryan, creator of the Captain Pugwash TV series, has died in hospital in Rye, East Sussex, aged 88. The BBC commissioned the first series in 1957 after spotting potential in Ryan's books about the tales of Pugwash and his nemesis Cut Throat Jake. His agent, Jane Gregory, said there was "a huge amount of love" for the childish pirate and his shipmates, who included Tom the Cabin Boy and Willy. Captain Horatio Pugwash was created in 1950 while Ryan was an art teacher at Harrow School, shortly after he got married to fellow artist Priscilla. It was published, in the same year, in the first edition of the Eagle comic. A book deal followed, before it was adapted for TV by the BBC in 1957, with black-and-white episodes being made until 1967. Colour episodes were shown on the BBC in a mid-1970s revival. Ms Gregory told BBC News he was "always enthusiastic, always charming". "A lot of the character of Captain Pugwash was John, which is probably why we loved him as much. We devote this mini waffle on to the memory of John Ryan.

Porridge

Written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais Porridge notched up 18 episodes, two Christmas specials and a film and never have a bad patch. Starting with the pilot 'Prisoner and Escort' in April 1973 Porridge boosted character actor Ronnie Barker out of the role of sketch comedian and into the world as a serious comedy actor. Joined by the talents of Richard Beckinsale, Fulton Mackay and Brian Wilde Porridge entertained the British public for four years.

Set in the fictional Slade prison in Cumberland Norman Stanley Fletcher is sentenced to five years. He is joined by first time criminal Leonard Godber and the two are paired off together in a cell much to Fletchers annoyance. Slowly the two become good friends and Godber learns that little victories are what can keep a man sane in prison. Keeping an eye on the inmates is ex drill sergeant Mr Mackay who rules the block with a rod of iron. Second to Mackay is the ever pondering Mr Barrowclough who Fletcher easily wraps round his finger.
