The South African Police Service released its annual crime statistics to Parliament's Police Committee yesterday. While the figure showed an overall decrease in crime - robbery and murder were increasing sharply. Robberies in residential areas increased by 7-percent between April last year and March this year, to 22- thousand-343 report cases. This was the highest in ten years. The most significant increases were experienced in the Northern Cape, North West, Free State and Gauteng.
