Journalists frequently put their lives on the line when covering community protests. Recently, South Africa has been engulfed by service delivery protests which are often violent. Last week in Vuwani in Limpopo, an SABC camera man was hit on the head with a bottle, when the windows of his car were smashed. In another incident, stone-throwing protesters damaged two SABC vehicles. In Coligny in the North West, community members attacked an SABC reporter. In Eldorado Park in Johannesburg , a Star reporter was hit on the upper body by a rock, and journalists were forced to take refuge in residents' homes several times. The DA has condemned the acts, and its spokesperson on communications, Phumzile van Damme, says the media has a pivotal role in covering what is happening and has urged protesters not to direct their frustrations with the government against journalists.
