Members of Parliament heard last week, that the Department of Social Development will not be able to take over the payments for social grants from the 1st of April. This, despite reassurances that the Department would be equipped to roll out social grants by the 1st of April. SASSA has a contract with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), which is currently responsible for disbursing social grants. Their five-year contract expires in March 2017. The Agency is now approaching the Constitutional court tomorrow, to seek permission to extend the CPS contract to run for another year. SASSA says only after 2017, will they be able to pay social grants in-house.
