There have been mixed reactions with regard to the draft Liquor Amendment Bill that was released for public consultation. Some describe it as heavy-handed and draconian and that it is unlikely to bring about any material change. The draft bill proposes among other things, raising the legal alcohol drinking age from 18 to 21, and banning the broadcast of alcohol-related content before 10pm. It also plans to restrict liquor licences to operators whose premises are at least 500 metres away from schools, churches and transport routes.
