The city of Cape Town's District Six was declared a whites-only area, under the Group Areas Act. That's fifty year ago today. District Six, just like Sophiatown in Johannesburg, enjoyed strong multi-cultural heritage. But these were unpleasant sites to the apartheid government, which was intent on enforcing "separate development" for different ethnic groups. But with the advent of democracy in 1994, government has recognised the older claims of former residents to the area, and pledged to support rebuilding. Today, the District Six Museum's Homecoming Centre will be a hive of activity, with a full programme of reflection, storytelling and performances.
