South Africa is experiencing a crippling drought situation and already, some parts of the country have been declared disaster areas. The unfavourable climate conditions are expected to persist for the next three years and result in South Africa receiving below average rainfall. This is the country's worst water shortages in 23 years, and has caused a decline in farming output that will lower its GDP and cause food-price increases. Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has called for individual self-discipline by water users.
