Teachers' Union, SADTU, want pupils who show signs of being bullies and are violent or aggressive to be placed in special schools. The union says school violence was a huge problem that is not good for a favourable teaching and learning environment. But are special schools the answer? Any child can go off the rails for a bit and what we need is a system that is responsive to them and helps them to get back on the straight and narrow. One would have thought the failure of schools to address issues of bullying and sexual harassment, to recognise pupils as individuals and create a safe and caring environment for them at school are all contributing factors. The grim reality is that we see so many incidents of violence at schools reported on a daily basis.
