According to the Department of Correctional Services, about 3-thousand prisoners are released into society every month after serving their sentences. In many instances punishment for these ex-convicts does not end at the prison gates. On the outside, ex-prisoners are often ostracised by their families and community. Not able to secure any employment because of their criminal records, many return to the only life that they know - that of crime. The rate of recidivism or re-offending among ex-offenders is very high in South Africa. In fact, as we were putting this show together, a few of the ex-convicts we were referred to as possible guests, were re-arrested. Thus continuing the cycle of crime.
