Episode 60. There are a lot of misconceptions about depression during pregnancy. Is depression "normal" during pregnancy?... NO! A woman who is depressed during pregnancy should seek medical care. There are several medications available that are not associated with risk of congenital anomalies, and the risks of leaving depression untreated has a much greater impact on the growing baby. Even if a woman does not want to be put on medication, there are other treatment options available that you can talk to your doctor about. In this episode, I discuss risk factors for depression in pregnancy, barriers to care, the effects of depression on both the mother and baby, and how depression is treated during pregnancy (involving medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes).
