This chapter details Jacob's return to Bethel. In it we learn that God wants his people to live for him according to his promises in a sin-cursed world!

In vv. 1-7 we saw that 1) God reminds his people of their relationship with him.

Now, in v. 8 we learn that 2) God’s people must face the reality of living in a sin-cursed and fallen world through death.

Then, in vv. 9-15 we saw that 3) God confirms his promises to his people when they obey.

Now, in vv. 16-21 we learn that 4) In spite of death, God continues to bless his people according to his promises.

And finally, in vv. 22-29, we see that 5) The evidence of God’s blessing cannot be nullified by sin or death in the community.
