In vv. 12-18 we encounter another toledoth statement ("these are the generations of...") which tells us what becomes of the person named. In this case, it is Ishmael. As we discover what becomes of him, the sons that he has, and his age upon death, we see two principles in the text:
1) God is faithful to his promises.
2) God works in spite of our sin.
