We have all encountered situations where we were able to take on the challenges that were in front of us. Even though we can face life’s hardships at times head-on, we also know we would much rather face those hardships and walk through them, not alone, but with the help of other people. Of all the ways Paul chooses to end his letter to the church in Philippi, he chooses to highlight their empathy for him and how they shared his struggles. Even though Paul can do all things through Christ, who gives some strength, Paul was moved by the fact that people still came along side of him and gave him their support. Today we will dig into the topic of empathy and how we can be like the church in Philippi and have God-tuned hearts for the needs of other people.

Even though the church in Philippi was a great group of Jesus followers, they had their own skirmishes as we can see in Philippians 4:1- 3. Before Paul brings up the quarrel between these two ladies, he frames it in the context of something so much bigger: heaven, the church, and the Lord. He urges them to find common ground, not in their own desires or their disputable matters, but in the indisputable, which is their standing in Jesus Christ.

We all have worries in our life, no matter how big or small they may be. But Paul tells us that we shouldn’t worry about anything. As Christians, we are called to take our worries, no matter how many there are or how small they may be, and lay them at God’s feet. Not only that, but to have the confidence that God will take care of our worries, no matter the situation, because that’s what joy truly is.

After referring back to his Jewish resume, the apostle Paul shares with the Philippian Christians what they needed to hear and what we need to be reminded of today; don’t look back. His message is simply this: Don't fixate on where you’ve been, what you've done, or your past failures, but keep pressing toward your goal and eternal future in Christ.

In Philippians 3, Paul shares how there were believers trying to mix their ceremonial laws and traditions in with the Gospel. As Paul illustrates, if we mix Jesus with anything it equals nothing. Paul references the pride he had in his résumé and his knowledge, and how it almost caused him to miss Christ. In this text, we will learn just as Paul learned to not rejoice in what we know or what we’ve done, but rather to rejoice in the Lord.

A lot of us know of Paul and everything that he did during his missionary journeys, but not many people think about the people that supported him and helped him throughout his struggles. In Philippians 2:19-30, we hear of two of these important people that helped Paul when he needed it most. This Sunday, we take a deep dive into Timothy and Epaphroditus, the help they gave Paul, and the joy that friends like them bring into our Christian walks.

Paul pleads with the church to make sure selfish attitudes do not sneak their way into the church and steal our closeness and joy. In Philippians 2:1-11, Paul illustrates how the attitude that we have about ourselves plus our view of the cross is what will crush our conceit and cause us to embrace our need for humility.

We all know life is filled with good circumstances and bad circumstances. Yet, despite wherever we find ourselves....joy IN those circumstances is a pursuit. It’s not a gift to be delivered to our door every morning. Our circumstances are not the things that make us joyful. If we wait for the circumstances to get just right, we will never laugh again. Joy comes to those who are determined to pursue it despite their circumstances. In our text, Paul gives a perspective that we all need to pursue. Life is a daily choice of chains. We will either choose to chain ourselves to Christ and find joy, or chain ourselves to something else and find disappointment.

From a Roman prison, the apostle Paul writes a letter to the church at Philippi, a church plant from his second missionary trip. In our scripture reading this morning, take special note of Paul's tone and his gratitude for their partnership in the grace of God. Amazingly, Paul gives us such a perspective, not warning them of the persecution they may endure, but rather inspiring them to find their joy in being blameless before God as well.

Service, by all definitions of the word, is a sliding scale. For some, they think of Memorial Day, where we remember the soldiers that sacrificed their lives in service to our country. Others think of service as a verb, like having service done to your car. As Christians, service is a necessity in our faith. Service as a Christian means showing love in all that we do for anyone and everyone, and constantly looking for other ways to serve and help those around us. Sometimes that requires that we take our idea of service and look at it from a different angle, or even stepping out of our comfort zone and getting dirty. No matter how we choose to serve, we must always keep the central goal in mind: in all that we do, we are serving the Lord Christ.

After Jesus describes himself as “the door” he lets us know that as we walk through the doors, there’s a Shepherd on the other side. We all need a Shepherd. As we allow ourselves to be shepherded by Jesus, John 10 describes how He feeds us, leads us, knows us, and protects us. But we also know in our own lives that imitation sometimes is the greatest and most sincere form of flattery. In this text, we will also learn how we can imitate shepherd leadership in our own areas of influence.

Israel had been in captivity for 70 years. They had experienced desolation and disappointment. But God had a plan to make this desolate people fruitful. In our text today, God pictures Israel as a barren woman who is told to expand her home. She is told to make preparations and expansions for the future even though her womb is empty. This woman is not told to wait but to begin enlarging, stretching, and building for what is to come. As she builds, she sings… Not because she has the answer yet but because she believes in the promises of God. Notice in our text how this faith-filled woman builds in anticipation of the future and what has not even arrived yet.

In 2 Cor 8:1-7, the apostle Paul, touched by the generosity of fellow Christians in Macedonia, encourages the church at Corinth to follow in their example of enthusiasm, joining in the support and expansion of the gospel through their offerings. In 2 Corinthians 9, Paul continues his exhortation of how God will use their gifts to meet the growing needs and, while doing so, bring their hearts to an overflow of thanksgiving. God pours out His mercy to us so that we may overflow in ministry to others as a testimony of His goodness.

All of our lives, whether we realize it or not, we have been trained to seek treasure. We chase a dollar, we seek promotion, we invest to make more, we build accounts of cash flow so that we can know for sure we will be "taken care of" later in life. However, Jesus warns us against that kind of dependency on ourselves. He calls it treasure storing here on earth. As he often does, Jesus challenges our conventional wisdom to remind us where all things come from, how all that overflow that comes our way is God's blessing us for a purpose. His blessings are given in overflow so that we may share those blessings with others. Today's message will challenge all of us, to see ourselves as God's managers of His overflow, and agents of His kindness and generosity to those around us. In doing so, we find our treasure in Him, a trust that finds confidence in His abundance, not our own.

In Ezekiel 47, Ezekiel is standing in God’s temple, which has now been restored, and His glory is in it. But as Ezekiel‘s angel tour guide shows him, God’s glory and power are not to remain within the walls. God’s glory and power are to leave the walls of that structure, and as it does, it transforms everything it touches. As God‘s power leaves those walls, so does Ezekiel. A seemingly random story in the middle of Acts inspires us how to better love the “Euthychuses” that are among us. Like Euthychus, we all have times where we fallen asleep. For many of us, the issue is not just that we’re asleep, but WHERE we have fallen asleep. Paul details for us how we too can come down from our upper rooms and how our drowsiness does not have to end in despair.

Word travels fast, even in the first century. Peter, having healed a man of paralysis 12 miles from Joppa, inspired the hearts of grieving widows there who appealed to Peter to come quickly, without delay. Their mentor and provider Tabitha had fallen ill and died. Confidence in God's power over the grave, and knowing Peter was nearby gave them reason to wash her body, place her in an upper room, prepared not for burial, but to be raised again. As Peter arrived, the widows wept bitterly clinging to the garments she had made them, and begged for a miracle. Peter raised her from the dead and returned her to the widows in her care. Tabitha's works praised her; not only the beautiful garments, but most especially the voices of those who had been the recipients of her selfless care.

God has a way of setting things in motion to demonstrate His power and authority. One family receives their first and only child, a beautiful daughter to love and enjoy. A woman nearby begins hemorrhaging inexplicably. One family receives the joy of family while the other individual lives in exile, unclean, and detached from society. Twelve years later their stories would intersect in desperation as they sought out Jesus for a miracle. The father brings word that his daughter is dying. The woman is spent in every way, and it is Jesus who is their only hope for healing. These two narratives interwoven in scripture, remind us that Jesus is more moved by your faith than your circumstance. “Don’t fear. Only believe.” Luke 8:40-56

Elisha did not ask for a place to stay, and the Shunammite woman did not ask for a baby. However, the everyday faithfulness of these two people helped them to see God’s mighty hand of power. Like the Shunammite woman, hope is what gets us through the day, but we also know that sometimes it hurts to hope. In our text today we can learn from the Shunammite woman how to navigate our buried dreams and really believe that “it is well” when “all is not well.”

Today, Brandon will bring us a lesson about a Life in Desperation. Often, God uses the most improbable people to help us in distress. God sends Elijah to lodge with a widow and her son and through miraculous means, God provides food for all of them that never goes away. Providence has a funny way of turning 180 degrees, and the widow finds herself in desperation. READ 1 Kings 17:17-24.

It was no accident that Saul became Israel’s 1st king. A man who started out his day, chasing his dad’s lost donkeys ended up finding out that he was going to be the king before the sun went down. This was no accident. It was evident that God’s thumbprint was on his life. He was gifted for this; God called him to it, and other people could see it, but the problem so often for Saul is that he could not see it. As we dig into the text today, Saul arrived as the first king of Israel. Like Saul, we were made for so much more than just arrival. We don’t have to hide among our baggage or compare our gifts to others. When God’s Spirit rushes into our lives, he equips us to do what we are called to do.

Jehoshaphat was an amazingly dialed-in king when his reign began. He fortified all of Judea, giving it strongholds that were well-guarded and protected by a notoriously strong and organized military. Not only did he focus on safety, but he also pushed for his kingdom to know God, sending out teachers, Levites, and priests to instruct from the Law of God. He led his people in prayer and fasting, calling on God for protection, and God delivered. Unfortunately, like his father Asa, bad alliances, wealth, and weariness put a stain on an otherwise great story.

As Israel grew further and further away from sound judgment and a desire for a king to lead them, it was necessary that God raise a leader to display His wisdom. It took a mother’s prayer of affliction, a miracle birth, and a young man willing to be led by the voice of God to bring Israel to repentance. Samuel’s lifelong ministry to the LORD called him into service as a priest, warrior, prophet, and faithful judge. His presence was key in reminding the Israelites that though they sought a king to rule them, God was to be held as sovereign. Samuel’s reputation and legacy are a picture of faithful judgment.

Lefthanders are often known as "southpaws." For years, the idea of a southpaw was seen as a weakness, but as Ehud will find out (and hopefully us too), God uses the left hand of our weakness to use the right hand of His strength. Just as God has done throughout the book of Judges, in Judges 3, God raises an unlikely left-handed hero named Ehud to deliver God's people from the oppressive king Eglon. Today, we will look at how we all have "a southpaw story" and be encouraged to know that our limitations can unlock God's power.
